Hadron multiplicities, pT-spectra and net-baryon number in central Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC

We compute the initial energy density and net baryon number density in 5% most central Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt s=5.5$ TeV from pQCD + (final state) saturation, and describe the evolution of the produced system with boost-invariant transversely expanding hydrodynamics. In addition to the total multiplicity at midrapidity, we give predictions for the multiplicity of charged hadrons, pions, kaons and (anti)protons, for the total transverse energy and net-baryon number, as well as for the $p_T$-spectrum of charged hadrons, pions and kaons. We also predict the region of applicability of hydrodynamics by comparing these results with high-$p_T$ hadron spectra computed from pQCD and energy losses.

RHIC-tested predictions for low-$p_T$ and high-$p_T$ hadron spectra in nearly central Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC

We study the hadron spectra in nearly central $A$+$A$ collisions at RHIC and LHC in a broad transverse momentum range. We cover the low-$p_T$ spectra using longitudinally boost-invariant hydrodynamics with initial energy and net-baryon number densities from the perturbative QCD (pQCD)+saturation model. Build-up of the transverse flow and sensitivity of the spectra to a single decoupling temperature $\Tdec$ are studied. Comparison with RHIC data at $\ssNN=130$ and 200 GeV suggests a rather high value $\Tdec=150$ MeV. The high-$p_T$ spectra are computed using factorized pQCD cross sections, nuclear parton distributions, fragmentation functions, and describing partonic energy loss in the quark-gluon plasma by quenching weights. Overall normalization is fixed on the basis of p+$\bar{\rm p}$(p) data and the strength of energy loss is determined from RHIC Au+Au data. Uncertainties are discussed. With constraints from RHIC data, we predict the $p_T$ spectra of hadrons in 5 % most central Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC energy $\ssNN=5500$ GeV. Due to the closed framework for primary production, we can also predict the net-baryon number at midrapidity, as well as the strength of partonic energy losses at the LHC. Both at the LHC and RHIC, we recognize a rather narrow crossover region in the $p_T$ spectra, where the hydrodynamic and pQCD fragmentation components become of equal size. We argue that in this crossover region the two contributions are to a good approximation mutually independent. In particular, our results suggest a wider $p_T$-region of applicability for hydrodynamical models at the LHC than at RHIC.

Photon Physics in Heavy Ion Collisions at the LHC

Various pion and photon production mechanisms in high-energy nuclear collisions at RHIC and LHC are discussed. Comparison with RHIC data is done whenever possible. The prospect of using electromagnetic probes to characterize quark-gluon plasma formation is assessed.

The Exact Evolution Equation of the Curvature Perturbation for Closed Universe

As is well known, the exact evolution equation of the curvature perturbation plays a very important role in investigation of the inflation power spectrum of the flat universe. However, its corresponding exact extension for the non-flat universes has not yet been given out clearly. The interest in the non-flat, specially closed, universes is being aroused recently. The need of this extension is pressing. We start with most elementary physical consideration and obtain finally this exact evolution equation of the curvature perturbation for the non-flat universes, as well as the evolutionary controlling parameter and the exact expression of the variable mass in this equation. We approximately do a primitive and immature analysis on the power spectrum of non-flat universes. This analysis shows that this exact evolution equation of the curvature perturbation for the non-flat universes is very complicated, and we need to do a lot of numerical and analytic work for this new equation in future in order to judge whether the universe is flat or closed by comparison between theories and observations.

On Hydrodynamical Description of Thermal Photons

The WA98 collaboration in the CERN SPS has reported an excess of photons over those originating from the decays of final hadrons in the lead-lead collisions. These photons can originate either from primary interactions of partons from colliding nuclei or from secondary interactions among produced particles. Photons produced in the secondary interactions, often called thermal photons, can be calculated by using thermal production rates and equilibrium hydrodynamics for the evolution of the expanding matter. I will review the main features of hydrodynamical studies for the WA98 data. The data can be reproduced both with or without a phase transition to the QGP, but high initial temperature, over the values predicted for the phase transition temperature, is required by the data. I will also show a prediction for the photon excess for central gold-gold collisions at the Brookhaven RHIC collider. In this prediction, the initial state for the hydrodynamical expansion is obtained from a perturbative QCD calculation.

Transverse spectra of hadrons at RHIC

We present results on spectra of pions, kaons and (anti)protons from a study of heavy ion collisions using the perturbative QCD + saturation model to calculate the production of initial (transverse) energy and baryon number followed by a hydrodynamic description of the expansion of produced matter. In particular, we study how the hadron spectra and multiplicities depend on the decoupling temperature $\Tdec$ when the low temperature phase contains all hadrons and and hadron resonances with mass below 2 GeV. We show that the spectra and multiplicities of pions, kaons and (anti)protons measured at RHIC in central Au+Au collisions with $\sqrt s=130$ GeV can be obtained with a single decoupling temperature 150$...$160 MeV, common for both the chemical and the kinetic freeze-out.

Photon emission in heavy ion collisions at the CERN SPS

We compute the thermal photon spectrum in the Pb+Pb collisions at the CERN SPS energy using thermal emission rates and a hydrodynamic description for the evolution of produced hot matter and compare our results with the measurements of the excess photons by the WA98 collaboration. Our results show that the measured photon spectrum can be reproduced with realistic initial conditions which take properly into account also the finite longitudinal size of the initial collision zone and which simultaneously describe well both the transverse and longitudinal hadron spectra. In the scenario with initial formation of QGP the recently calculated emission rate, complete to order alpha_s, reproduces the measured spectrum. However, the experimental spectrum can also be reproduced in a purely hadronic scenario without transition to QGP state, but a high initial temperature, much over the values predicted for the phase transition temperature T_c, is required.

Multiplicities and Transverse Energies in Central AA Collisions at RHIC and LHC from pQCD, Saturation and Hydrodynamics

We compute the particle multiplicities and transverse energies at central and nearly central AA collisions at RHIC and LHC. The initial state is computed from perturbative QCD supplemented by the conjecture of saturation of produced partons. The expansion stage is described in terms of hydrodynamics assuming longitudinal boost invariance and azimuthal symmetry. Transverse flow effects, a realistic list of hadrons and resonance decays are included. Comparison with the data of the multiplicities at $\sqrt s=56$ AGeV and 130 AGeV from RHIC is done and predictions for the full RHIC energy and LHC energy are made for the multiplicities and transverse energies. The reduction from the initially released minijet transverse energy to the $E_T$ in the final state is less than in the one-dimensional case but still dramatic: a factor of 2.7 at RHIC, and 3.6 at the LHC.
