Multi-sideband interference structures by high-order photon-induced continuum-continuum transitions in helium

Following up on a previous paper on two-color photoionization of Ar(3p) [Bharti et al., Phys. Rev. A 103 (2021) 022834], we present measurements and calculations for a modified three-sideband (3-SB) version of the "reconstruction of attosecond beating by interference of two-photon transitions" (RABBITT) configuration applied to He(1s). The 3-SB RABBITT approach allows us to explore interference effects between pathways involving different orders of transitions within the continuum. The relative differences in the retrieved oscillation phases of the three sidebands provide insights into the continuum-continuum transitions. The ground state of helium has zero orbital angular momentum, which simplifies the analysis of oscillation phases and their angle-dependence within the three sidebands. We find qualitative agreement between our experimental results and the theoretical predictions for many cases but also observe some significant quantitative discrepancies.

Low spin spectroscopy of neutron-rich 43,44,45Cl via β and (β}n decay

β decay of neutron-rich isotopes 43,45 S,studied at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory is reported here. β delayed γ transitions were detected by an array of 16 clover detectors surrounding the Beta Counting Station which consists of a 40x40 Double Sided Silicon Strip Detector followed by a Single Sided Silicon Strip Detector. β decay half-lives have been extracted for 43,45 S by correlating implants and decays in the pixelated implant detector with further coincidence with γ transitions in the daughter nucleus. The level structure of 43,45 Cl is expanded by the addition of 20 new γ transitions in 43Cl and 8 in 45 Cl with the observation of core excited negative-parity states for the first time. For 45 S decay, a large fraction of the β decay strength goes to delayed neutron emission populating states in 44 Cl which are also presented. Comparison of experimental observations is made to detailed shell-model calculations using the SDPFSDG-MU interaction to highlight the role of the diminished N = 28 neutron shell gap and the near degeneracy of the proton s 1/2 and d 3/2 orbitals on the structure of the neutron-rich Cl isotopes. The current work also provides further support to a ground state spin-parity assignment of 3/2 + in 45 Cl.

Small-scale cosmic ray anisotropy observed by the GRAPES-3 experiment at TeV energies

GRAPES-3 is a mid-altitude (2200 m) and near equatorial ($11.4^{\circ}$ North) air shower array, overlapping in its field of view for cosmic ray observations with experiments that are located in Northern and Southern hemispheres. We analyze a sample of $3.7\times10^9$ cosmic ray events collected by the GRAPES-3 experiment between 1 January 2013 and 31 December 2016 with a median energy of $\sim16$ TeV for study of small-scale ($<60^{\circ}$) angular scale anisotropies. We observed two structures labeled as A and B, deviate from the expected isotropic distribution of cosmic rays in a statistically significant manner. Structure `A' spans $50^{\circ}$ to $80^{\circ}$ in the right ascension and $-15^{\circ}$ to $30^{\circ}$ in the declination coordinate. The relative excess observed in the structure A is at the level of $(6.5\pm1.3)\times10^{-4}$ with a statistical significance of 6.8 standard deviations. Structure `B' is observed in the right ascension range of $110^{\circ}$ to $140^{\circ}$. The relative excess observed in this region is at the level of $(4.9\pm1.4)\times10^{-4}$ with a statistical significance of 4.7 standard deviations. These structures are consistent with those reported by Milagro, ARGO-YBJ, and HAWC. These observations could provide a better understanding of the cosmic ray sources, propagation and the magnetic structures in our Galaxy.

Phase transition in oxygen-intercalated pseudocapacitor Pr$_2$MgZrO$_6$ electrode: A combined structural and conductivity analysis

The phase transition behavior and charge storage mechanism of Pr$_2$MgZrO$_6$ (PMM), an oxygen-intercalated pseudocapacitor, were investigated through crystal structure analysis, Raman spectroscopy, ac conductivity spectroscopy, X ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electrochemical spectroscopy. The crystal structure analysis and vibration studies revealed a phase transition in PMM, following the sequence 14 to 87 to 225. High temperature Raman spectroscopy demonstrated a significant feature of a monoclinic to tetragonal phase transformation in PMM. The ac conductivity spectroscopy exhibited a semiconductor to metal transition in PMM. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of the Mn 2p state confirmed the presence of oxygen vacancies in PMM at room temperature. Furthermore, the electrochemical performance of PMM as an electrode was evaluated. The PMM electrode displayed an intercalated pseudocapacitive nature, exhibiting a maximum possible specific capacitance of 257.57 F. The charge storage process of the PMM electrode was thoroughly reviewed and discussed, shedding light on the underlying mechanisms.

$β^-$ decay of neutron-rich $^{45}$Cl at magic number N=28

Results from the study of $β^-$-decay of $^{45}$Cl, produced in the fragmentation of a 140-MeV/u $^{48}$Ca beam, are presented. The half-life for $^{45}$Cl $β$-decay is measured to be 513(36) ms. The $β^-$ and $β^- 1n$ decay of $^{45}$Cl populated excited states in $^{45,44}$Ar, respectively. On the basis of $γ$-ray singles and $γ$-$γ$ coincidence data, decay schemes for the two daughter nuclei have been established. They are compared with shell model calculations using the FSU interaction. The low-lying negative parity states for $^{45}$Ar are well described by a single particle (neutron) occupying orbitals near the Fermi surface, whereas neutron excitations across the $N = 20$ shell gap are needed to explain the positive-parity states which are expected to be populated in allowed Gamow-Teller $β$-decay of $^{45}$Cl. The highest $β$-feeding to the 5/2$^+$ state in $^{45}$Ar from the ground state of $^{45}$Cl points towards a 3/2$^+$ spin-parity assignment of the ground state of the parent over the other possibility of 1/2$^+$. The high Q$_{β^-}$ value of $^{45}$Cl decay allows for the population of $1p1h$ states above the neutron separation energy in $^{45}$Ar leading to positive parity states of $^{44}$Ar being populated by removal of one neutron from the $sd$ shell. The spin-parities of the excited levels in $^{44}$Ar are tentatively assigned for the first time by comparison with the shell model calculations. The 2978~keV level of $^{44}$Ar is identified as the excited 0$^+$ level which could correspond to a different configuration from the ground state.

Element resolved evidence of superdiffusive terahertz spin current arising from ultrafast demagnetization process

Using element-specific measurements of the ultrafast demagnetization of Ru/Fe$_{65}$Co$_{35}$ heterostructures, we show that Ru can exhibit a significant magnetic contrast (3% asymmetry) resulting from ultrafast spin currents emanating from the demagnetization process of the FeCo layer. We use this magnetic contrast to investigate how superdiffusive spin currents are affected by the doping of heavy elements in the FeCo layer. We find that the spin currents are strongly suppressed, and that the recovery process in Ru slows down, by Re doping. This is in accordance with a change in interface reflectivity of spin currents as found by the superdiffusive spin transport model.

High spin states of $^{204}$At: isomeric states and shears band structure

High-spin states of neutron deficient Trans-Lead nucleus $^{204}$At were populated up to $\sim 8\,{\rm MeV}$ excitation through the $^{12}$C + $^{197}$Au fusion evaporation reaction. Decay of the associated levels through prompt and delayed $γ$-ray emissions were studied to evaluate the underlying nuclear structure. The level scheme, which was partly known, was extended further. An isomeric $16^+$ level with observed lifetime $τ=52 \pm 5\, {\rm ns}$, was established from our measurements. Attempts were made to interpret the excited states based on multi quasiparticle and hole structures involving $2f_{5/2}$, $1h_{9/2}$, and $1i_{13/2}$ shell model states, along with moderate core excitation. Magnetic dipole band structure over the spin parity range:~$16^+ - 23^+$ was confirmed and evaluated in more detail, including the missing cross-over $E2$ transitions. Band-crossing along the shears band was observed and compared with the evidence of similar phenomena in the neighbouring neutron deficient $^{202}$Bi, $^{205}$Rn isotones and the $^{203}$At isotope. Based on comparison of the measured $B(M1)/B(E2)$ values for transitions along the band with the semiclassical model based estimates, the shears band of $^{204}$At was established along with the level scheme.

Unraveling the reaction mechanism for large alpha production and incomplete fusion in reactions involving weakly bound stable nuclei

The origin of the large $α$ particle production and incomplete fusion in reactions involving weakly-bound $α$+$x$ cluster nuclei still remains unresolved. While the (two-step) process of breakup followed by capture of the ``free" complementary fragment ($x$) is widely believed to be responsible, a few recent studies suggest the dominant role of (direct) cluster stripping. To achieve an unambiguous experimental discrimination between these two processes, a coincidence measurement between the outgoing $α$ particles and $γ$ rays from the heavy residues has been performed for the $^7$Li($α$+triton)+$^{93}$Nb system. Proper choice of kinematical conditions allowed for the first time a significant population of the region accessible only to the direct triton stripping process and not to breakup followed by the capture of the ``free'' triton (from the three-body continuum). This result, also supported by a cluster-transfer calculation, clearly establishes the dominance of the direct cluster-stripping mechanism in the large alpha production.

Simulation of neutron background for a dark matter search experiment at JUSL

Dark matter search experiments demand low to ultralow radiation background to operate. It is very important to understand the nature of the radiation background including knowledge about the sources contributing to it. Sometimes, evaluation of the background becomes very specific to the site chosen for the experiment, and also to the experimental configuration. A dark matter search experiment is proposed to be set up at the Jaduguda Underground Science Laboratory (JUSL) in India. The laboratory will be located inside an existing mine with 555 m of vertical rock overburden. Neutrons produced from $(α,n)$ reactions, spontaneous fission of natural radioactive impurities in the rocks, and also from cosmic muon induced reactions are considered as the main background which can affect the sensitivity and outcome of the experiment. In this work, simulations based on GEANT4 are done to understand both the radiogenic neutron background caused by natural radioactivity of the surrounding rock and the cosmogenic neutron background due to interaction of the deeply penetrating cosmic muons with the rock. The muon flux in the cavern is obtained to be $4.49(\pm0.25)\times10^{-7} $cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ and the fluxes of radiogenic and cosmogenic neutrons above an energy threshold of 1 MeV in the cavern are obtained to be $5.75(\pm0.58)\times10^{-6}$cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ and $7.25(\pm0.65)\times 10^{-9}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ respectively. The values obtained are comparable with estimates and measurements done for DAMA, WIPP and dark matter experiments at Boulby mine. The effectiveness of different shielding materials are also investigated to obtain the best possible neutron background reduction for a dark matter search experiment at JUSL. We also estimate the sensitivity of a CsI based detector for Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) dark matter search at JUSL considering the estimated neutron background.

Superconductivity behavior in epitaxial TiN films points at surface magnetic disorder

We analyze the evolution of the normal and superconducting electronic properties in epitaxial TiN films, characterized by high Ioffe-Regel parameter values, as a function of the film thickness. As the film thickness decreases, we observe an increase of in the residual resistivity, which becomes dominated by diffusive surface scattering for $d\leq20\,$nm. At the same time, a substantial thickness-dependent reduction of the superconducting critical temperature is observed compared to the bulk TiN value. In such a high quality material films, this effect can be explained by a weak magnetic disorder residing in the surface layer with a characteristic magnetic defect density of $\sim10^{12}\,\mathrm{cm}^{-2}$. Our results suggest that surface magnetic disorder is generally present in oxidized TiN films.

Controlled motion of skyrmions in a magnetic antidot lattice

Future spintronic devices based on skyrmions will require precise control of the skyrmion motion. We show that this goal can be achieved through the use of magnetic antidot arrays. With micromagnetic simulations and semi-analytical calculations based on Thiele equation, we demonstrate that an antidot array can guide the skyrmions in different directions depending on the parameters of the applied current pulse. Despite the fixed direction of the net driving current, due to the non-trivial interplay between the repulsive potential introduced by the antidots, the skyrmion Hall effect and the non-uniform current distribution, full control of skyrmion motion in a 2D lattice can be achieved. Moreover, we demonstrate that the direction of skyrmion motion can be controlled by tuning only a single parameter of the current pulse, i.e. current magnitude. For lower current magnitudes the skyrmion can be moved perpendicularly to the current direction, and can overcome the skyrmion Hall effect. For larger current magnitudes, the skyrmion Hall effect can be effectively suppressed and skyrmions can move parallel to the applied current.

Formation of Néel Type Skyrmions in an Antidot Lattice with Perpendicular Magnetic Anisotropy

Magnetic skyrmions are particle-like chiral spin textures found in a magnetic film with out-of-planeanisotropy and are considered to be potential candidates as information carriers in next generationdata storage devices. Despite intense research into the nature of skyrmions and their dynamic prop-erties, there are several key challenges that still need to be addressed. In particular, the outstandingissues are the reproducible generation, stabilization and confinement of skyrmions at room tempera-ture. Here, we present a method for the capture of nanometer sized magnetic skyrmions in an arrayof magnetic topological defects in the form of an antidot lattice. With micromagnetic simulations,we elucidate the skyrmion formation in the antidot lattice and show that the capture is dependenton the antidot lattice parameters. This behavior is confirmed with scanning transmission x-ray mi-croscopy measurements. This demonstration that a magnetic antidot lattice can be implemented asa host to capture skyrmions provides a new platform for experimental investigations of skyrmionsand skyrmion based devices.

Negative refraction in time-varying, strongly-coupled plasmonic antenna-ENZ systems

Time-varying metasurfaces are emerging as a powerful instrument for the dynamical control of the electromagnetic properties of a propagating wave. Here we demonstrate an efficient time-varying metasurface based on plasmonic nano-antennas strongly coupled to an epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) deeply sub-wavelength film. The plasmonic resonance of the metal resonators strongly interacts with the optical ENZ modes, providing a Rabi level spitting of ~30%. Optical pumping at frequency ω induces a nonlinear polarisation oscillating at 2ω responsible for an efficient generation of a phase conjugate and a negative refracted beam with a conversion efficiency that is more than four orders of magnitude greater compared to the bare ENZ film. The introduction of a strongly coupled plasmonic system therefore provides a simple and effective route towards the implementation of ENZ physics at the nanoscale

Crystalline phases in Zr9Ni11 and Hf9Ni11 intermetallics; Investigations by perturbed angular correlation spectroscopy and ab initio calculations

Crystalline phases formed in stoichiometric Zr$_9$Ni$_{11}$ and Hf$_9$Ni$_{11}$ have been studied by perturbed angular correlation (PAC) spectroscopy, XRD and TEM/SAED measurements. In Zr$_9$Ni$_{11}$, the phases Zr$_9$Ni$_{11}$ ($\sim$89\%) and Zr$_8$Ni$_{21}$ ($\sim$11\%) have been found at room temperature from PAC measurements. At 773 K, Zr$_9$Ni$_{11}$ partially decomposes to Zr$_7$Ni$_{10}$ and at 973 K, it is completely decomposed to ZrNi and Zr$_7$Ni$_{10}$. In Hf$_9$Ni$_{11}$, a predominant phase ($\sim$81\%) due to HfNi is found at room temperature while the phase Hf$_9$Ni$_{11}$ is produced as a minor phase ($\sim$19\%). No compositional phase change at higher temperature is found in Hf$_9$Ni$_{11}$. Phase components found from XRD and TEM/SAED measurements are similar to those observed from PAC measurements. Electric field gradients in Zr$_9$Ni$_{11}$ and Hf$_9$Ni$_{11}$ have been calculated by density functional theory (DFT) using all electron full potential (linearized) augmented plane wave plus local orbitals [FP-(L)APW+lo] method in order to assign the phase components.

Electric field gradients in Zr$_8$Ni$_{21}$ and Hf$_8$Ni$_{21}$ intermetallic compounds; Results from perturbed angular correlation measurements and first-principles density functional theory

Numerous technological applications of Ni-based Zr and Hf intermetallic alloys promoted comprehensive studies in Zr$_8$Ni$_{21}$ and Hf$_8$Ni$_{21}$ by perturbed angular correlation (PAC) spectroscopy, which were not studied earlier until this report. The different phases produced in the samples have been identified by PAC and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. Using $^{181}$Hf probe, two non-equivalent Zr/Hf sites have been observed in both Zr$_8$Ni$_{21}$ and Hf$_8$Ni$_{21}$ compounds. From present PAC measurements in Zr$_8$Ni$_{21}$, a component due to the production of Zr$_7$Ni$_{10}$ by eutectic reaction from the liquid metals is also observed. The phase Zr$_7$Ni$_{10}$, however, is not found from the XRD measurement. In Zr$_8$Ni$_{21}$, while the results do not change appreciably up to 973 K exhibit drastic changes at 1073 K. In Hf$_8$Ni$_{21}$, similar results for the two non-equivalent sites have been found but site fractions are in reverse order. In this alloy, a different contaminating phase, possibly due to HfNi$_3$, has been found from PAC measurements but is not found from XRD measurement. Density functional theory (DFT) based calculations of electric field gradient (EFG) and asymmetry parameter ($η$) at the sites of $^{181}$Ta probe nucleus allowed us to assign the observed EFG fractions to the various lattice sites in (Zr/Hf)$_8$Ni$_{21}$ compounds.

Identification of phase components in Zr-Ni and Hf-Ni intermetallic compounds; Investigations by perturbed angular correlation spectroscopy and first principles calculations

Time-differential perturbed angular correlation (TDPAC) measurements have been carried out in stoichiometric ZrNi$_3$ and HfNi$_3$ intermetallic compounds using $^{181}$Ta probe in the temperature range 77-1073 K considering the immense technological applications of Zr-Ni and Hf-Ni intermetallic compounds. In ZrNi$_3$, four components due to the production of Zr$_2$Ni$_7$, Zr$_8$Ni$_{21}$, Zr$_7$Ni$_{10}$ and ZrNi$_3$ have been found at room temperature. The HfNi$_3$ sample produces five electric quadrupole interaction frequencies at room temperature. The phase HfNi$_3$ is strongly produced in stoichiometric sample of HfNi$_3$ where two non-equivalent Hf sites are found to be present. Besides this phase, two other phases due to Hf$_2$Ni$_7$ and Hf$_8$Ni$_{21}$ have been found but, we do not observe any phase due to Hf$_7$Ni$_{10}$. X-ray diffraction, TEM/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and TEM-selected area electron diffraction (SAED) measurements were used to further characterize the investigated materials and it was found that these results agree with the TDPAC results. In order to confirm findings from TDPAC measurements, density functional theory (DFT) based calculations of electric field gradients (EFG) and asymmetry parameters at the sites of $^{181}$Ta probe nucleus were performed. Our calculated results are found to be in excellent agreement with the experimental results.

Coupling between two extreme excitation mode in weakly deformed $^{142}$Eu nucleus

Two opposite parity dipole bandlike structures DB I and DB II of $^{142}$Eu are investigated by the Indian National Gamma Array (INGA), using the fusion evaporation reaction $^{31}$P + $^{116}$Cd @ 148 MeV. The decreasing trend as well as magnitude of the measured $B(M1)$ and $B(E2)$ transition rates of the band DB II has been reproduced well within the shears mechanism with the principal axis cranking model calculations. This calculation reflects the fact that the maximum contribution of the angular momentum of the states in DB II has been generated from the magnetic rotation (MR) phenomenon. The enhanced $B(E1)$ rates of the connecting $E1$ transitions from the states of DB II to DB I are demanding the octupole correlation due to the involvement of the octupole driving pair of orbitals $π{h_{11/2}}$ and $π{d_{5/2}}$ as evident from the quasiparticle alignment ($i_{x}$), the experimental routhians (e$^{'}$) and the calculated neutron and proton quasiparticle energies against the rotational frequency ($ω$).
