Measurement of Differential Cross Sections and Integrated Luminosity using Proton-Proton Elastic Scattering with HADES at T = 4.53 GeV and T = 1.60 GeV

This work presents an investigation of elastic proton-proton scattering based on data collected with the recently upgraded HADES detector using beams of protons with kinetic energies of $T = 4.53$ GeV and $T = 1.60$ GeV impinging on a liquid hydrogen target. This is the first measurement emerging from the upgraded detector setup, including a Forward Detector with straw-tube tracking planes designed for the PANDA experiment. The well-constrained two-body kinematic relations of elastic scattering have been exploited to study the detector alignment, the beam alignment, and to provide the final measurement of the beam energy. In addition, the recorded luminosity of the experiment has been determined by normalizing the HADES data in a range of the squared four-momentum transfer $t$ that overlaps with measurements by previous experiments worldwide. Furthermore, the differential cross sections have been determined over a large range of $t$ from which the slope parameter $B$ is extracted, yielding $B = 8.98 \pm 0.3$ (GeV/$c$)$^{-2}$ and $7.3 \pm 0.1$ (GeV/$c$)$^{-2}$ at $T = 4.53$ GeV and $1.60$ GeV, respectively. This contribution to the world database on elastic proton-proton scattering provides input to theoretical modeling and serves as a reference for luminosity determinations by future experiments in the same energy range.

A 500 pc volume-limited sample of hot subluminous stars II. Atmospheric parameters, mass distribution, and kinematics

We present a quantitative spectroscopic and kinematic analysis of a volume-complete sample of hot subluminous stars within 500 pc of the Sun, assembled using accurate parallax measurements from Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3). In total, 3226 spectra of 253 hot subdwarf stars were analysed to derive atmospheric parameters (effective temperature, surface gravity, and helium abundance) and radial velocities. Spectral energy distributions (SEDs) combined with Gaia parallaxes were used to measure stellar radii, luminosities, and masses. The derived atmospheric parameters reveal a consistent alignment between sdB and sdO stars in the Kiel diagram when compared to theoretical evolutionary models. We identify a population (about 10%) of hot subdwarfs located below the 0.45 Msun zero-age EHB in both the Kiel and Hertzsprung-Russell diagrams, which likely originate from intermediate-mass progenitors (1.8-8 Msun). The overall mass distribution peaks at 0.48 pm 0.12 Msun, while hot subdwarfs below the EHB peak at 0.43 pm 0.10 Msun, supporting non- or semi-degenerate helium ignition characteristic of intermediate-mass stars. Interpolation of EHB and post-EHB tracks yields mass distributions consistent with those derived from SEDs and parallaxes. Assuming a mass range between 0.40 and 0.50 Msun, we find that the post-EHB birthrate is 2-3 times higher than the EHB birthrate, suggesting overestimated EHB lifetimes or contamination from additional formation channels. Our kinematic analysis shows that 86 pm 2% of the stars belong to the Galactic thin disk, with 13 pm 1% and 1 pm 1% associated with the thick disk and halo. The below-EHB population is found exclusively in the thin disk, the only Galactic component young enough to host intermediate-mass progenitors. Its absence from other large samples suggests that non-degenerate formation channels play a more prominent role in the Galactic disk.

On subelliptic equations on stratified Lie groups driven by singular nonlinearity and weak $L^1$ data

The article is about an elliptic problem defined on a {\it stratified Lie group}. Both sub- and superlinear cases are considered whose solutions are guaranteed to exist in light of the interplay between the nonlinearities and the weak $L^1$ datum. The existence of infinitely many solutions is proved for suitable values of $\lambda,p,q$ by using the Symmetric Mountain Pass Theorem.

Measurement of ion backflow fraction in GEM detectors

A systematic study is performed to measure the ion backflow fraction of the GEM detectors. The effects of different voltage configurations and Ar/CO_2 gas mixtures, in ratios of 70:30, 80:20 and 90:10, on positive ion fraction are investigated in detail. Moreover, a comparative study is performed between single and quadruple GEM detectors.The ion current with detector effective gain is measured with various field configurations and with three proportions of gas mixtures. The ion backflow fraction for the GEM is substantially reduced with the lower drift field. A minimum ion backflow fraction of 18 % is achieved in the single GEM detector with Ar/CO_2 80:20 gas mixture, however, a minimum ion backflow fraction of 3.5 %, 3.0%, and 3.8 % are obtained for a drift field of 0.1kV/cm with Ar/CO_2 70:30, 80:20 and 90:10 gas mixtures, respectively for quadrupole GEM detector. Similar values of effective gain and ion backflow fraction have been found by calculating the current from pulse height spectrum method, obtained in the Multi Channel Analyser.

UVIT-HST-Gaia-VISTA study of KRON 3 in the Small Magellanic Cloud: A cluster with an extended red clump in UV

We have demonstrated the advantage of combining multi-wavelength observations, from the ultraviolet (UV) to near-infrared, to study Kron 3, a massive star cluster in the Small Magellanic Cloud. We have estimated the radius of the cluster Kron 3 to be 2.'0 and for the first time, we report the identification of NUV-bright red clump (RC) stars and the extension of the RCin colour and magnitude in the NUV vs (NUV-optical) colour-magnitude diagram (CMD). We found that extension of the RC is an intrinsic property of the cluster and it is not due to contamination of field stars or differential reddening across the field. We studied the spectral energy distribution of the RC stars and estimated a small range in temperature ~5000 - 5500K, luminosity ~60 - 90 Land radius ~8.0 - 11.0 Supporting their RC nature. The range of UV magnitudes amongst the RC stars (~23.3 to 24.8 mag) is likely caused by the combined effect of variable mass loss, variation in initial helium abundance (Y_ini=0.23 to 0.28), and a small variation in age (6.5-7.5 Gyr) and metallicity ([Fe/H]=-1.5 to -1.3). Spectroscopic follow-up observations of RC stars in Kron 3 are necessary to confirm the cause of the extended RC.

Ethernet based Data logger for Gaseous Detectors

A data logger is designed to monitor and record ambient parameters such as temperature, pressure and relative humidity along with gas flow rate as a function of time. These parameters are required for understanding the characteristics of gas-filled detectors such as Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) and Multi-Wire Proportional Counter (MWPC). The data logger has different microcontrollers and has been interfaced to an ethernet port with a local LCD unit for displaying all measured parameters. In this article, the explanation of the data logger design, hardware, and software description of the master microcontroller and the DAQ system along with LabVIEW interface client program have been presented. We have implemented this device with GEM detector and displayed few preliminary results as a function of above parameters.

In-orbit Performance of UVIT and First Results

The performance of the ultraviolet telescope (UVIT) on-board ASTROSAT is reported. The performance in orbit is also compared with estimates made from the calibrations done on the ground. The sensitivity is found to be within ~15% of the estimates, and the spatial resolution in the NUV is found to exceed significantly the design value of 1.8 arcsec and it is marginally better in the FUV. Images obtained from UVIT are presented to illustrate the details revealed by the high spatial resolution. The potential of multi-band observations in the ultraviolet with high spatial resolution is illustrated by some results.

Building of a 4-channel TTL scaler for counting detector signals

A scaler has been fabricated to count the signals from any radiation de- tector. It can count signals of frequency up to 140 kHz. Transistor Transistor Logic (TTL) is used in this scaler. In this article the details of the design, fabrication and operation processes of the scaler is presented.

Long-term stability test of a triple GEM detector

The main aim of the study is to perform the long-term stability test of gain of the single mask triple GEM detector. A simple method is used for this long- term stability test using a radioactive X-ray source with high activity. The test is continued till accumulation of charge per unit area > 12.0 mC/mm2. The details of the chamber fabrication, the test set-up, the method of measurement and the test results are presented in this paper.

Design and fabrication of a data logger for atmospheric pressure, temperature and relative humidity for gas-filled detector development

A novel instrument has been developed to monitor and record the ambient pa- rameters such as temperature, atmospheric pressure and relative humidity. These parameters are very essential for understanding the characteristics such as gain of gas filled detectors like Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) and Multi Wire Propor- tional Counter (MWPC). In this article the details of the design, fabrication and operation processes of the device has been presented.

Characterizations of GEM detector prototype

At NISER-IoP detector laboratory an initiative is taken to build and test Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) detectors for ALICE experiment. The optimisation of the gas flow rate and the long-term stability test of the GEM detector are performed. The method and test results are presented.

UHE neutrino damping in a thermal gas of relic neutrinos

We present a calculation of the damping of an ultra-energetic (UHE) cosmic neutrino travelling through the thermal gas of relic neutrinos, using the formalism of finite-temperature field theory. From the self-energy diagram due to Z exchange, we obtain the annihilation cross section for an UHE neutrino interacting with an antineutrino from the background. This method allows us to derive the full expressions for the UHE neutrino transmission probability, taking into account the momentum of relic neutrinos. We compare our results with the approximations in use in the literature. We discuss the effect of thermal motion on the shape of the absorption dips for different UHE neutrino fluxes as well as in the context of relic neutrino clustering. We find that for ratios of the neutrino mass to the relic background temperature $10^2$ or smaller, the thermal broadening of the absorption lines could significantly affect the determination of the neutrino mass and of the characteristics of the population of UHE sources.

Interaction of ultra-energetic cosmic neutrinos with a thermal gas of relic neutrinos

We use the formalism of finite-temperature field theory to study the interactions of ultra-high energy (UHE) cosmic neutrinos with the thermal background of relic neutrinos. From the imaginary part of the neutrino self-energy, calculated in terms of the Z boson propagator near the resonance, we derive general expressions for the UHE neutrino transmission probability. This allows us to take into account the thermal effects introduced by the momentum distribution of the relic neutrinos. We compare our results with the approximate expressions existing in the literature and discuss the influence of thermal effects on the absorption dips in the context of realistic UHE neutrino fluxes and favoured neutrino mass schemes.

A New Type of Resonant Neutrino Conversions Induced by Magnetic Fields

We consider resonant neutrino conversions in magnetised matter, such as a degenerate electron gas. We show how magnetisation effects caused by axial vector interactions of neutrinos with the charged leptons in the medium can induce a new type of resonant neutrino conversion which may occur even in situations where the MSW effect does not occur, such as the case of degenerate or inverted neutrino mass spectra. Our new resonance may simultaneously affect anti-neutrino $\bar{ν_a} \leftrightarrow \barν_b$ as well as neutrino $ν_{a} \leftrightarrow ν_b$ flavour conversions, and therefore it may substantially affect supernova neutrino energy spectra. Using SN1987A data we conclude that only laboratory experiments with long baseline such as ICARUS or MINOS are likely to find neutrino oscillations due to their sensitivity to small $Δm^2$. We also comment on the possibility of resonant conversions induced by Majorana neutrino transition moments and mention the case of sterile neutrinos $ν_s$.
