MOND vs. Newtonian dynamics in early-type galaxies. The case of NGC 4649 (M60)

Context: Regarding the significant interest in both dark matter and the application of MOND to early-type galaxies, we investigate the MOND theory by comparing its predictions, for models of constant mass-to-light ratio, with observational data of the early-type galaxy NGC 4649. Aims: We study whether measurements for NGC 3379 and NGC 1399 are typical of early-type systems and we test the assumption of a Newtonian constant M/L ratio underlying most of the published models. Methods: We employ the globular clusters of NGC 4649 as a mass tracer. The Jeans equation is calculated for both MOND and constant mass-to-light ratio assumptions. Spherical symmetry is assumed and the calculations are performed for both isotropic and anisotropic cases. Results: We found that both Jeans models with the assumption of a constant mass-to-light ratio and different MOND models provide good agreement with the observed values of the velocity dispersion. The most accurate fits of the velocity dispersion were obtained for the mass-to-light ratio in the B-band, which was equal to 7, implying that there is no need for significant amounts of dark matter in the outer parts (beyond 3 effective radii) of this galaxy. We also found that tangential anisotropies are most likely present in NGC 4649.

The total mass of the early-type galaxy NGC 4649 (M60)

In this paper we analyze the problem of the total mass and the total mass-to-light ratio of the early-type galaxy NGC 4649 (M60). We have used two independent techniques: the X-ray methodology which is based on the temperature of the X-ray halo of NGC 4649 and the tracer mass estimator (TME) which uses globular clusters (GCs) observed in this galaxy. We calculated the mass in Newtonian and MOdified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) approaches and found that interior to 3 effective radii (Re) there is no need for large amounts of dark matter. Beyond 3Re dark matter starts to play important dynamical role. We also discuss possible reasons for the discrepancy between the estimates of the total mass based on X-rays and TME in the outer regions of NGC 4649.

Dark matter in early-type galaxies: dynamical modelling of IC1459, IC3370, NGC3379 and NGC4105

We analyse long-slit spectra of four early-type galaxies which extend from ~1 to ~3 effective radii: IC1459, IC3370, NGC3379 and NGC4105. We have extracted the full line-of-sight velocity distribution (in the case of NGC3379 we also used data from the literature) which we model using the two-integral approach. Using two-integral modelling we find no strong evidence for dark haloes, but the fits suggest that three-integral modelling is necessary. We also find that the inferred constant mass-to-light ratio in all four cases is typical for early-type galaxies. Finally, we also discuss the constraints on the mass-to-light ratio which can be obtained using X-ray haloes in the case of IC1459, NGC3379 and NGC4105 and compare the estimated values with the predictions from the dynamical modelling.

Clustering of Galaxies and Groups in the NOG Sample

We use the two-point correlation function in redshift space, $ξ(s)$, to study the clustering of the galaxies and groups of the Nearby Optical Galaxy (NOG) Sample, which is a nearly all-sky, complete, magnitude-limited sample of \~7000 bright and nearby optical galaxies. The correlation function of galaxies is well-described by a power-law, $ξ(s)= (s/s_0)^{-γ}$, with $γ\sim1.5$ and $s_0\sim 6.4 h^{-1}$ Mpc. We find evidence of morphological segregation between early- and late-type galaxies, with a gradual decreasing of the strength of clustering from the S0 to the late-type spirals, on intermediate scales. Furthermore, luminous galaxies (with $M_B\leq -19.5 + 5 \log h$) are more clustered than dim galaxies. The groups show an excess of clustering with respect to galaxies. Groups with greater velocity dispersions, sizes, and masses are more clustered than those with lower values of these quantities.

On the Ionizing Sources in Spiral Galaxies: II. the Center of the Milky Way

In this paper we present the ionization in the center of the Galaxy. We use Taylor & Cordes (1993) and Lazio & Cordes (1998) models to obtain the overall contribution of the Galactic center (GC) component to the total electron density. We also discuss local contributions from the GC area that come from a complex set of sources. Finally, we discuss the nature of SgrA*.

A note on the Milky Way as a barred galaxy

We review recent research on the Milky Way galaxy and try to investigate whether its shape is similar to other barred galaxies. The emphasis is given on microlensing research because this method can be useful in determining the shape of the Galaxy with the minimal set of assumptions. By analyzing plots of the microlensing optical depth, $τ$ as a function of galactic coordinates for different values of the axis ratio, $q$ of the galactic halo, we have shown that observations are best described by a flattened halo with $0.2 ^<_\sim q ^<_\sim 0.6$.

A Note on the Total Absorption Cross-section of Galaxies

In this work we shall sketch a further piece of evidence for the plausibility of hypothesis of galactic origin of Ly-$α$ forest absorption systems. Two basic premises of our discussion are (1) HDF redshift surface densities in the redshift interval 0<z<6; and (2) validity of low-redshift results on redshift coincidences, showing average absorption cross-section corresponding to radius of 160$h^{-1}$ kpc for $L^*$ galaxies. Low-redshift analysis also showed covering factor nearing unity, which will be used and discussed in further considerations. Semantic problems concerned with the interpretation of galaxy absorption cross-section are discussed in some details, and importance of distinction between size of the absorbers and absorption coherence length is emphasized. It is shown that HDF data predict huge number of absorption systems, in fact much larger than observed, which shows frequently quoted argument that number of galaxies is insufficient to account for all absorption lines to be wrong. Road to achieving higher compatibility with the empirical statistics is shown to lie in applying the luminosity scaling, possibly with cut-off. This is significant for recent attempts to explain the association of the Ly-$α$ forest systems with normal galaxies.

Distorsion of the CMBR spectrum: a tentative explanation

The purpose of this note is to present a possible explanation of the spectral distorsions that could be observed in the CMBR spectrum.We propose that distor- sions of the order of $y \sim 10^{- 6}$ can be interpreted as a consequence of radiative decay of massive tau neutrionos.We have also obtained a constraint on the value of the decaying neutrino mass.
