Nuclear-spin evidence of insulating and antiferromagnetic state of CuO2 planes in superconducting Pr2Ba4Cu7O15-δ

In contrast to the "Pr-issue" that neither PrBa2Cu3O7 (Pr123) nor PrBa2Cu4O8 (Pr124) shows superconductivity (SC), we have observed 100%-fraction of SC in an oxygen-reduced Pr2Ba4Cu7O(15-delta) (Pr247) which has a hybrid structure that Pr247 = Pr123 + Pr124. It is found that Cu nuclear-spin signals from the CuO2 planes observed at 300K are completely wiped out down at 2K. Instead, plane signals at 2K are observed at higher frequencies. This indicates that, despite the bulk SC, the CuO2 planes in Pr247 are found to be in an insulating and antiferromagnetically ordered state.

Suppression of Gate Screening on Edge Magnetoplasmons by Highly Resistive ZnO Gate

We investigate a way to suppress high-frequency coupling between a gate and low-dimensional electron systems in the gigahertz range by measuring the velocity of edge magnetoplasmons (EMPs) in InAs quantum Hall systems. We compare the EMPvelocity in three samples with different electromagnetic environments-one has a highly resistive zinc oxide (ZnO) top gate, another has a normal metal (Ti/Au) top gate, and the other does not have a gate. The measured EMP velocity in the ZnO gate sample is one order of magnitude larger than that in the Ti/Au gate sample and almost the same as that in the ungated sample. As is well known, the smaller velocity in the Ti/Au gate sample is due to the screening of the electric field in EMPs. The suppression of the gate screening effect in the ZnO gate sample allows us to measure the velocity of unscreened EMPs while changing the electron density. It also offers a way to avoid unwanted high-frequency coupling between quantum Hall edge channels and gate electrodes.

Spintronic superconductor in a bulk layered material with natural spin-valve structure

Multi-layered materials provide fascinating platforms to realize various functional properties, possibly leading to future electronic devices controlled by external fields. In particular, layered magnets coupled with conducting layers have been extensively studied recently for possible control of their transport properties via the spin structure. Successful control of quantum-transport properties in the materials with antiferromagnetic (AFM) layers, so-called natural spin-valve structure, has been reported for the Dirac Fermion and topological/axion materials. However, a bulk crystal in which magnetic and superconducting layers are alternately stacked has not been realized until now, and the search for functional properties in it is an interesting yet unexplored field in material science. Here, we discover superconductivity providing such an ideal platform in EuSn2As2 with the van der Waals stacking of magnetic Eu layers and superconducting Sn-As layers, and present the first demonstration of a natural spin-valve effect on the superconducting current. Below the superconducting transition temperature (Tc), the electrical resistivity becomes zero in the in-plane direction. In contrast, it, surprisingly, remains finite down to the lowest temperature in the out-of-plane direction, mostly due to the structure of intrinsic magnetic Josephson junctions in EuSn2As2. The magnetic order of the Eu layers (or natural spin-valve) is observed to be extremely soft, allowing one to easy control of the out-of-plane to in-plane resistivities ratio from 1 to infinity by weak external magnetic fields. The concept of multi-functional materials with stacked magnetic-superconducting layers will open a new pathway to develop novel spintronic devices with magnetically controllable superconductivity.

Crystallization and vitrification of electrons in a glass-forming charge liquid

Charge ordering (CO) is a phenomenon in which electrons in solids crystallize into a periodic pattern of charge-rich and charge-poor sites owing to strong electron correlations. This usually results in long-range order. In geometrically frustrated systems, however, a glassy electronic state without long-range CO has been observed. We found that a charge-ordered organic material with an isosceles triangular lattice shows charge dynamics associated with crystallization and vitrification of electrons, which can be understood in the context of an energy landscape arising from the degeneracy of various CO patterns. The dynamics suggest that the same nucleation and growth processes that characterize conventional glass-forming liquids guide the crystallization of electrons. These similarities may provide insight into our understanding of the liquid-glass transition.

Twisted Radiation by Electrons in Spiral Motion

We theoretically show that a single free electron in circular/spiral motion radiates an electromagnetic wave possessing helical phase structure and carrying orbital angular momentum. We experimentally demonstrate it by double-slit diffraction on radiation from relativistic electrons in spiral motion. We show that twisted photons should be created naturally by cyclotron/synchrotron radiations or Compton scatterings in various situations in cosmic space. We propose promising laboratory vortex photon sources in various wavelengths ranging from radio wave to gamma-rays.

Temperature and Entropy Profiles to the Virial Radius of Abell 1246 Cluster Observed with Suzaku

We report properties of the intracluster medium (ICM) in Abell~1246 to the virial radius ($r_{200}$) and further outside as observed with Suzaku. The ICM emission is clearly detected to $r_{200}$, and we derive profiles of electron temperature, density, entropy, and cluster mass based on the spectral analysis. The temperature shows variation from $\sim 7$ keV at the central region to $\sim 2.5$ keV around $r_{200}$. The total mass in $r_{500}$ is $(4.3 \pm 0.4) \times 10^{14}~M_{\odot}$, assuming hydrostatic equilibrium. At $r>r_{500}$, the hydrostatic mass starts to decline and we, therefore, employ the total mass within $r_{200}$ based on weak-lens mass profile obtained from a sample of lower mass clusters. This yields the gas mass fraction at $r_{200}$ consistent with the cosmic baryon fraction, i.e. $\sim 17$%. The entropy profile indicates a flatter slope than that of the numerical simulation, particularly in $r>r_{500}$. These tendencies are similar to those of other clusters observed with Suzaku. We detect no significant ICM emission outside of $r_{200}$, and $2σ$ upper limits of redshifted OVII and OVIII line intensities are constrained to be less than 2.9 and $5.6\times 10^{-7}$ photons cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ arcmin$^{-2}$, respectively. The OVII line upper limit indicates $n_{\rm H}< 4.7\times 10^{-5}$ cm$^{-3}$ ($Z/0.2~Z_{\odot}$)$^{-1/2}$ ($L/20~{\rm Mpc}$)$^{-1/2}$, which corresponds to an overdensity, $δ<160$ ($Z/0.2~Z_{\odot}$)$^{-1/2}$ ($L/20~{\rm Mpc}$)$^{-1/2}$.

Relaxor ferroelectricity induced by electron correlations in a molecular dimer Mott insulator

We have investigated the dielectric response in an antiferromagnetic dimer-Mott insulator beta'-(BEDT-TTF)2ICl2 with square lattice, compared to a spin liquid candidate kappa-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu2(CN)3. Temperature dependence of the dielectric constant shows a peak structure obeying Curie-Weiss law with strong frequency dependence. We found an anisotropic ferroelectricity by pyrocurrent measurements, which suggests the charge disproportionation in a dimer. The ferroelectric actual charge freezing temperature is related to the antiferromagnetic interaction, which is expected to the charge-spin coupled degrees of freedom in the system.

Fermiology of Strongly Spin-Orbit Coupled Superconductor Sn1-xInxTe and its Implication to Topological Superconductivity

We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of the strongly spin-orbit coupled low-carrier density superconductor Sn1-xInxTe (x = 0.045) to elucidate the electronic states relevant to the possible occurrence of topological superconductivity recently reported for this compound from point-contact spectroscopy. The obtained energy-band structure reveals a small holelike Fermi surface centered at the L point of the bulk Brillouin zone, together with a signature of a topological surface state which indicates that this superconductor is essentially a doped topological crystalline insulator characterized by band inversion and mirror symmetry. A comparison of the electronic states with a band-non-inverted superconductor possessing a similar Fermi surface structure, Pb1-xTlxTe, suggests that the anomalous behavior in the superconducting state of Sn1-xInxTe is likely to be related to the peculiar orbital characteristics of the bulk valence band and/or the presence of a topological surface state.

Impact of graphene quantum capacitance on transport spectroscopy

We demonstrate experimentally that graphene quantum capacitance $C_{\mathrm{q}}$ can have a strong impact on transport spectroscopy through the interplay with nearby charge reservoirs. The effect is elucidated in a field-effect-gated epitaxial graphene device, in which interface states serve as charge reservoirs. The Fermi-level dependence of $C_{\mathrm{q}}$ is manifested as an unusual parabolic gate voltage ($V_{\mathrm{g}}$) dependence of the carrier density, centered on the Dirac point. Consequently, in high magnetic fields $B$, the spectroscopy of longitudinal resistance ($R_{xx}$) vs. $V_{\mathrm{g}}$ represents the structure of the unequally spaced relativistic graphene Landau levels (LLs). $R_{xx}$ mapping vs. $V_{\mathrm{g}}$ and $B$ thus reveals the vital role of the zero-energy LL on the development of the anomalously wide $ν=2$ quantum Hall state.

X-ray Temperature and Mass Measurements to the Virial Radius of Abell 1413 with Suzaku

We present X-ray observations of the northern outskirts of the relaxed galaxy cluster A1413 with Suzaku, whose XIS instrument has the low intrinsic background needed to make measurements of these low surface brightness regions. We excise 15 point sources superimposed on the image above a flux of $1\times 10^{-14}$ \fluxunit (2--10keV) using XMM-Newton and Suzaku images of the cluster. We quantify all known systematic errors as part of our analysis, and show our statistical errors encompasses them for the most part. Our results extend previous measurements with Chandra and XMM-Newton, and show a significant temperature drop to about 3keV at the virial radius, $r_{200}$. Our entropy profile in the outer region ($> 0.5 r_{200}$) joins smoothly onto that of XMM-Newton, and shows a flatter slope compared with simple models, similar to a few other clusters observed at the virial radius. The integrated mass of the cluster at the virial radius is approximately $7.5\times10^{14}M_{\odot}$ and varies by about 30% depending on the particular method used to measure it.

Fano-Kondo interplay in a side-coupled double quantum dot

We investigate low-temperature transport characteristics of a side-coupled double quantum dot where only one of the dots is directly connected to the leads. We observe Fano resonances, which arise from interference between discrete levels in one dot and the Kondo effect, or cotunneling in general, in the other dot, playing the role of a continuum. The Kondo resonance is partially suppressed by destructive Fano interference, reflecting novel Fano-Kondo competition. We also present a theoretical calculation based on the tight-binding model with slave boson mean field approximation, which qualitatively reproduces the experimental findings.

Proper heavy-quark potential from a spectral decomposition of the thermal Wilson loop

We propose a non-perturbative and gauge invariant derivation of the static potential between a heavy-quark ($Q$) and an anti-quark ($\bar{Q}$) at finite temperature. This proper potential is defined through the spectral function (SPF) of the thermal Wilson loop and can be shown to satisfy the Schrödinger equation for the heavy $Q\bar{Q}$ pair in the thermal medium. In general, the proper potential has a real and an imaginary part, corresponding to the peak position and width of the SPF. The validity of using a Schrödinger equation for heavy $Q\bar{Q}$ can also be checked from the structure of the SPF. To test this idea, quenched QCD simulations on anisotropic lattices ($a_σ=4a_τ=0.039\rm fm$, $N^3_σ\times N_τ =20^2 \times (96-32)$) are performed. The real part of the proper potential below the deconfinement temperature ($T=0.78T_c$) exhibits the well known Coulombic and confining behavior. At ($T=2.33T_c$) we find that it coincides with the Debye screened potential obtained from Polyakov-line correlations in the color-singlet channel under Coulomb gauge fixing. The physical meaning of the spectral structure of the thermal Wilson loop and the use of the maximum entropy method (MEM) to extract the real and imaginary part of the proper potential are also discussed.

Stellar and total baryon mass fractions in groups and clusters since redshift 1

We investigate if the discrepancy between estimates of the total baryon mass fraction obtained from observations of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and of galaxy groups/clusters persists when a large sample of groups is considered. To this purpose, 91 candidate X-ray groups/poor clusters at redshift 0.1 < z < 1 are selected from the COSMOS 2 deg^2 survey, based only on their X-ray luminosity and extent. This sample is complemented by 27 nearby clusters with a robust, analogous determination of the total and stellar mass inside R_500. The total sample of 118 groups and clusters with z < 1 spans a range in M_500 of ~10^13--10^15 M_sun. We find that the stellar mass fraction associated with galaxies at R_500 decreases with increasing total mass as (M_500)^-0.37 \pm 0.04, independent of redshift. Estimating the total gas mass fraction from a recently derived, high quality scaling relation, the total baryon mass fraction (f_500^stars+gas=f_500^stars+f_500^gas) is found to increase by ~ 25% when M_500 increases from =5 X 10^13 M_sun to = 7 X 10^14 M_sun. After consideration of a plausible contribution due to intra--cluster light (11--22% of the total stellar mass), and gas depletion through the hierarchical assembly process (10% of the gas mass), the estimated values of the total baryon mass fraction are still lower than the latest CMB measure of the same quantity (WMAP5), at a significance level of 3.3σfor groups of =5 X 10^13~M_sun. The discrepancy decreases towards higher total masses, such that it is 1σat = 7 X 10^14~M_sun. We discuss this result in terms of non--gravitational processes such as feedback and filamentary heating.

Kl3 semileptonic form factor from 2+1 flavour lattice QCD

We present the first results for the Kl3 form factor from simulations with 2+1 flavours of dynamical domain wall quarks. Combining our result, namely f_+(0)=0.964(5), with the latest experimental results for Kl3 decays leads to |V_{us}|=0.2249(14), reducing the uncertaintity in this important parameter. For the O(p^6) term in the chiral expansion we obtain Δf=-0.013(5).

COSMOS Photometric Redshifts with 30-bands for 2-deg2

We present accurate photometric redshifts in the 2-deg2 COSMOS field. The redshifts are computed with 30 broad, intermediate, and narrow bands covering the UV (GALEX), Visible-NIR (Subaru, CFHT, UKIRT and NOAO) and mid-IR (Spitzer/IRAC). A chi2 template-fitting method (Le Phare) was used and calibrated with large spectroscopic samples from VLT-VIMOS and Keck-DEIMOS. We develop and implement a new method which accounts for the contributions from emission lines (OII, Hbeta, Halpha and Ly) to the spectral energy distributions (SEDs). The treatment of emission lines improves the photo-z accuracy by a factor of 2.5. Comparison of the derived photo-z with 4148 spectroscopic redshifts (i.e. Delta z = zs - zp) indicates a dispersion of sigma_{Delta z/(1+zs)}=0.007 at i<22.5, a factor of 2-6 times more accurate than earlier photo-z in the COSMOS, CFHTLS and COMBO-17 survey fields. At fainter magnitudes i<24 and z<1.25, the accuracy is sigma_{Delta z/(1+zs)}=0.012. The deep NIR and IRAC coverage enables the photo-z to be extended to z~2 albeit with a lower accuracy (sigma_{Delta z/(1+zs)}=0.06 at i~24). The redshift distribution of large magnitude-selected samples is derived and the median redshift is found to range from z=0.66 at 22<i<22.5 to z=1.06 at 24.5<i<25. At i<26.0, the multi-wavelength COSMOS catalog includes approximately 607,617 objects. The COSMOS-30 photo-z enable the full exploitation of this survey for studies of galaxy and large scale structure evolution at high redshift.

Photometric redshift and classification for the XMM-COSMOS sources

We present photometric redshifts and spectral energy distribution (SED) classifications for a sample of 1542 optically identified sources detected with XMM in the COSMOS field. Our template fitting classifies 46 sources as stars and 464 as non-active galaxies, while the remaining 1032 require templates with an AGN contribution. High accuracy in the derived photometric redshifts was accomplished as the result of 1) photometry in up to 30 bands with high significance detections, 2) a new set of SED templates including 18 hybrids covering the far-UV to mid-infrared, which have been constructed by the combination of AGN and non-active galaxies templates, and 3) multi-epoch observations that have been used to correct for variability (most important for type 1 AGN). The reliability of the photometric redshifts is evaluated using the sub-sample of 442 sources with measured spectroscopic redshifts. We achieved an accuracy of $σ_{Δz/(1+z_{spec})} = 0.014$ for i$_{AB}^*<$22.5 ($σ_{Δz/(1+z_{spec})} \sim0.015$ for i$_{AB}^*<$24.5). The high accuracies were accomplished for both type 2 (where the SED is often dominated by the host galaxy) and type 1 AGN and QSOs out to $z=4.5$. The number of outliers is a large improvement over previous photometric redshift estimates for X-ray selected sources (4.0% and 4.8% outliers for i$_{AB}^*<$22.5 and i$_{AB}^*<$24.5, respectively). We show that the intermediate band photometry is vital to achieving accurate photometric redshifts for AGN, whereas the broad SED coverage provided by mid infrared (Spitzer/IRAC) bands is important to reduce the number of outliers for normal galaxies.

Nucleon axial charge in 2+1 flavor dynamical lattice QCD with domain wall fermions

We present results for the nucleon axial charge g_A at a fixed lattice spacing of 1/a=1.73(3) GeV using 2+1 flavors of domain wall fermions on size 16^3x32 and 24^3x64lattices (L=1.8 and 2.7 fm) with length 16 in the fifth dimension. The length of the Monte Carlo trajectory at the lightest m_πis 7360 units, including 900 for thermalization. We find finite volume effects are larger than the pion mass dependence at m_π= 330 MeV. We also find that g_A exhibits a scaling with the single variable m_πL which can also be seen in previous two-flavor domain wall and Wilson fermion calculati ons. Using this scaling to eliminate the finite-volume effect, we obtain g_A = 1.20(6)(4) at the physical pion mass, m_π= 135 MeV, where the first and second errors are statistical and systematic. The observed finite-volume scaling also appears in similar quenched simulations, but disappear when V\ge (2.4 fm)^3. We argue this is a dynamical quark effect.

Spectroscopic Confirmation Of An Extreme Starburst At Redshift 4.547

We report the spectroscopic confirmation of a sub-mm galaxy (SMG) at z=4.547 with an estimated L_IR=0.5-2.0x10^13 L_sun. The spectra, mid-IR, and X-ray properties indicate the bolometric luminosity is dominated by star formation at a rate of >1000M_sun per yr. Multiple, spatially separated components are visible in the Ly-Alpha line with an observed velocity difference of up to 380 km/sec and the object morphology indicates a merger. The best fit spectral energy distribution and spectral line indicators suggest the object is 2-8 Myr old and contains >10^10 M_sun of stellar mass. This object is a likely progenitor for the massive early type systems seen at z~2.
