Model calculations of the Sivers function satisfying the Burkardt Sum Rule

It is shown that, at variance with previous analyses, the MIT bag model can explain the available data of the Sivers function and satisfies the Burkardt Sum Rule to a few percent accuracy. The agreement is similar to the one recently found in the constituent quark model. Therefore, these two model calculations of the Sivers function are in agreement with the present experimental and theoretical wisdom.

Conventional nuclear effects on generalized parton distributions of trinucleons

The measurement of nuclear Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) will represent a valuable tool to understand the structure of bound nucleons in the nuclear medium, as well as the role of non-nucleonic degrees of freedom in the phenomenology of hard scattering off nuclei. By using a realistic microscopic approach for the evaluation of GPDs of 3He, it will be shown that conventional nuclear effects, such as isospin and binding ones, or the uncertainty related to the use of a given nucleon-nucleon potential, are rather bigger than in the forward case. These findings suggest that, if great attention is not paid to infer the properties of nuclear GPDs from those of nuclear parton distributions, conventional nuclear effects can be easily mistaken for exotic ones. It is stressed therefore that 3He, for which the best realistic calculations are possible, represents a unique target to discriminate between conventional and exotic effects. The complementary information which could be obtained by using a 3H target is also addressed.

Studying the Sivers function by model calculations

A formalism is presented to evaluate the Sivers function in constituent quark models. A non-relativistic reduction of the scheme is performed and applied to the Isgur-Karl model. The sign for the $u$ and $d$ flavor contributions that we obtained turns out to be opposite. The Burkardt Sum Rule is fulfilled to a large extent. After the estimate of the QCD evolution of the results from the momentum scale of the model to the experimental one, a reasonable agreement with the available data is obtained.

Sivers function in constituent quark models

A formalism to evaluate the Sivers function, developed for calculations in constituent quark models, is applied to the Isgur-Karl model. A non-vanishing Sivers asymmetry, with opposite signs for the u and d flavor, is found; the Burkardt sum rule is fulfilled up to 2 %. Nuclear effects in the extraction of neutron single spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering off 3He are also evaluated. In the kinematics of JLab, it is found that the nuclear effects described by an Impulse Approximation approach are under control.

Sivers Asymmetry for the proton and the neutron

A formalism is presented to evaluate the Sivers function in constituent quark models. A non-relativistic reduction of the scheme is performed and applied to the Isgur-Karl model. The results obtained are consistent with a sizable Sivers effect and the signs for the u and d flavor contributions turn out to be opposite. The Burkardt Sum Rule is fulfilled to a large extent. After the estimate of the QCD evolution of the results from the momentum scale of the model to the experimental one, a reasonable agreement with the available data is obtained. A calculation of nuclear effects in the extraction of neutron single spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering off 3He is also described. In the kinematics of forth-coming experiments at JLab, it is found that the nuclear effects arising within an Impulse Approximation approach are under control.

A quark model analysis of the Sivers function

We develop a formalism to evaluate the Sivers function. The approach is well suited for calculations which use constituent quark models to describe the structure of the nucleon. A non-relativistic reduction of the scheme is performed and applied to the Isgur-Karl model of hadron structure. The results obtained are consistent with a sizable Sivers effect and the signs for the u and d flavor contributions turn out to be opposite. This pattern is in agreement with the one found analyzing, in the same model, the impact parameter dependent generalized parton distributions. The Burkardt Sum Rule turns out to be fulfilled to a large extent. We estimate the QCD evolution of our results from the momentum scale of the model to the experimental one and obtain reasonable agreement with the available data.

3He Spin-Dependent Cross Sections and Sum Rules

We present a measurement of the spin-dependent cross sections for the \vec{^3He}(\vec{e},e')X} reaction in the quasielastic and resonance regions at four-momentum transfer 0.1 < Q^2< 0.9 GeV^2. The spin-structure functions have been extracted and used to evaluate the nuclear Burkhardt--Cottingham and extended GDH sum rules for the first time. Impulse approximation and exact three-body Faddeev calculations are also compared to the data in the quasielastic region.

The effects of nuclear structure on generalized parton distributions of 3He

The effect of the nuclear medium on generalized parton distributions (GPDs) is studied for the 3He nucleus, through a realistic microscopic analysis. In Impulse Approximation, Fermi motion and binding effects, evaluated by modern potentials, are found to be larger than in the forward case and very sensitive to the details of nuclear structure at short distances.

3He structure from coherent hard exclusive processes

Hard exclusive processes, such as deep electroproduction of photons and mesons off nuclear targets, could give access, in the coherent channel, to nuclear generalized parton distributions (GPDs). Here, a realistic microscopic calculation of the unpolarized quark GPD H_q of the 3He nucleus is reviewed. In Impulse Approximation, H_q is obtained as a convolution between the GPD of the internal nucleon and the non-diagonal spectral function, describing properly Fermi motion and binding effects. The obtained formula has the correct limits. Nuclear effects, evaluated by a modern realistic potential, are found to be larger than in the forward case. In particular, they increase with increasing the momentum transfer and the asymmetry of the process. Another feature of the obtained results is that the nuclear GPD cannot be factorized into a Delta^2-dependent and a Delta^2-independent term, as suggested in prescriptions proposed for finite nuclei. The dependence of the obtained GPDs on different realistic potentials used in the calculation shows that these quantities are sensitive to the details of nuclear structure at short distances.

Generalized parton distributions and constituent quarks

An approach is described to calculate Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) in Constituent Quark Models (CQM). The GPDs are obtained from wave functions to be evaluated in a given CQM. The general relations linking the twist-two GPDs to the form factors and to the leading twist quark densities are recovered. Results for the leading twist, unpolarized GPD in the Isgur and Karl model are presented.

Neutron structure function $F_2^n(x)$ from deep inelastic electron scattering off few-nucleon systems

The possibility of a reliable extraction of the neutron deep inelastic structure function, $F_2^n(x)$, for $ x < 0.85$ from joint measurements of deep inelastic structure functions of deuteron, $^{3}He$ and $^{3}H$ is investigated. The model dependence in this extraction, linked to the possible different interactions between nucleons in nuclei, is shown to be weak, if the nuclear structure effects are properly taken into account. A combined analysis of the deep inelastic structure functions of these nuclei is proposed to study effects beyond the impulse approximation.

Orbital Angular Momentum Parton Distributions in Light-Front Dynamics

We study the quark angular momentum distribution in the nucleon within a light-front covariant quark model. Special emphasis is put into the orbital angular momentum: a quantity which is very sensitive to the relativistic treatment of the spin in a light-front dynamical approach. Discrepancies with the predictions of the low-energy traditional quark models where relativistic spin effects are neglected, are visible also after perturbative evolution to higher momentum scales. Orbital angular momentum distributions and their contribution to the spin sum rule are calculated for different phenomenological mass operators and compared with the results of the MIT bag model.

Orbital Angular Momentum Parton Distributions in Quark Models

At the low energy, {\sl hadronic}, scale we calculate Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) twist-two parton distributions for the relativistic MIT bag model and for non-relativistic quark models. We reach the scale of the data by leading order evolution in perturbative QCD. We confirm that the contribution of quarks and gluons OAM to the nucleon spin grows with $Q^2$, and it can be relevant at the experimental scale, even if it is negligible at the hadronic scale, irrespective of the model used. The sign and shape of the quark OAM distribution at high $Q^2$ may depend strongly on the relative size of the OAM and spin distributions at the hadronic scale. Sizeable quark OAM distributions at the hadronic scale, as proposed by several authors, can produce the dominant contribution to the nucleon spin at high $Q^2$.

Parton distributions in a constituent quark scenario

A simple picture of the constituent quark as a composite system of point-like partons is used to construct the unpolarized and polarized parton distributions by a convolution between constituent quark momentum distributions and constituent quark structure functions. We achieve good agreement with experiments in the unpolarized, as well as, in the polarized case. When our results are compared with similar calculations using non-composite constituent quarks, the accord with the experiments of the present scheme is impressive. We conclude that DIS data are consistent with a low energy scenario dominated by composite constituents of the nucleon.

Semi-inclusive deep inelastic lepton scattering off complex nuclei

It is shown that in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (DIS) of electrons off a complex nucleus A, the detection, in coincidence with the scattered electron, of a nucleus (A-1) in the ground state, as well as of a nucleon and a nucleus (A-2), also in the ground state, may provide unique information on several long standing problems, such as : i) the nature and the relevance of the final state interaction in DIS; ii) validity of the spectator mechanism in DIS; iii) the medium induced modifications of the nucleon structure function; iv) the origin of the EMC effect.
