Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Assessment of Palghar District, Maharashtra, India by considering spatially non-uniform seismicity

The Palghar district of Maharashtra has recently received attention because of frequent occurrences of earthquakes in its vicinity in the last few years since November, 2018. The district area falls under seismic zone III, as per the seismic zonation map of India. As the recent earthquake activities have been preceded by many major seismic events in the region, it necessitates to re-evaluate the level of seismic hazard of the area in a reliable and realistic way. With this aim in mind, the probabilistic seismic hazard map of Palghar district with regard to 5% damped Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) and Pseudo Spectral Acceleration (PSA) at 0.2 s and 1.0 s for 10% and 2% probability of exceedance (PoE) in 50 years at engineering bedrock level is presented. The estimation of hazard are performed in a finer grid resolution of 0.02 deg X 0.02 deg and takes into consideration the nonuniform distribution of earthquake probability within a seismic source zone (SSZ) and data-driven selection of appropriate Ground Motion Prediction Equations (GMPEs). The spatial variation of the hazard maps, reflected in he final results, demonstrates notable improvements over the earlier studies.

Suitability Analysis of Ground Motion Prediction Equations for Western and Central Himalayas and Indo-Gangetic Plains

Ground motion prediction equations (GMPEs) play a key role in seismic hazard assessment (SHA). Considering the seismo-tectonic, geophysical and geotectonic characteristics of a target region, all the GMPEs may not be suitable in predicting the observed ground motion effectively. With a fairly large number of published GMPEs, the selection and ranking of suitable GMPEs for the design of logic trees in SHA for a particular target region has become a necessity of late. This paper presents a detailed quantitative evaluation of performance of 16 GMPEs against recorded ground motion data in two target regions, characterized by distinct seismo-tectonic, geophysical and geotectonical nature. The data set comprises of 465 three-component spectral accelerograms corresponding to 122 earthquake events. The suitability of a GMPE is tested by two widely accepted data-driven statistical methods, namely, likelihood (LH) and log-likelihood (LLH) method. Different suites of GMPEs are shown suitable for different periods of interest. The results will be useful to scientists and engineers for microzonation and estimation of seismic design parameters for the design of earthquake-resistant structures in these regions.

An improved Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Assessment of Tripura, India

The State of Tripura lies in northeast India which is considered to be one of the most seismically active regions of the world. In the present study, a realistic Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Assessment (PSHA) of Tripura State based on improved seismogenic sources considering layered polygonal sources corresponding to hypo-central depth range of 0 to 25 km, 25 to 70 km and 70 to 180 km, respectively and data driven selection of suitable Ground Motion Prediction Equations (GMPEs) in a logic tree framework is presented. Analyses have been carried out by formulating a layered seismogenic source zonation together with smooth-gridded seismicity. Using the limited accelerogram records available, most suitable GMPEs have been selected after performing a thorough quantitative assessment and thus the uncertainty in selecting appropriate GMPEs in PSHA has been addressed by combining them with proper weight factor. The computations of seismic hazard are carried out in a higher resolution of grid interval of 0.05 $\degree$ X 0.05 $\degree$. The probabilistic seismic hazard distribution in terms of Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) and 5% damped Pseudo Spectral Acceleration (PSA) at different time periods for 10% and 2% probability of exceedance in 50 years at engineering bedrock level have been presented. The final results show significant improvements over the previous studies, which is reflecetd in the local variation of the hazard maps. The design response spectra at engineering bedrock level can be computed for any location in the study region from the hazard distributions. The results will be useful for earthquake resistant design and construction of structures in this region.

A Lightweight and Attack Resistant Authenticated Routing Protocol for Mobile Adhoc Networks

In mobile ad hoc networks, by attacking the corresponding routing protocol, an attacker can easily disturb the operations of the network. For ad hoc networks, till now many secured routing protocols have been proposed which contains some disadvantages. Therefore security in ad hoc networks is a controversial area till now. In this paper, we proposed a Lightweight and Attack Resistant Authenticated Routing Protocol (LARARP) for mobile ad hoc networks. For the route discovery attacks in MANET routing protocols, our protocol gives an effective security. It supports the node to drop the invalid packets earlier by detecting the malicious nodes quickly by verifying the digital signatures of all the intermediate nodes. It punishes the misbehaving nodes by decrementing a credit counter and rewards the well behaving nodes by incrementing the credit counter. Thus it prevents uncompromised nodes from attacking the routes with malicious or compromised nodes. It is also used to prevent the denial-of-service (DoS) attacks. The efficiency and effectiveness of LARARP are verified through the detailed simulation studies.
