Au-decorated black TiO$_2$ produced via laser ablation in liquid

Rational combination of plasmonic and all-dielectric concepts within unique hybrid nanomaterials provides promising route toward devices with ultimate performance and extended modalities. However, spectral matching of plasmonic and Mie-type resonances for such nanostructures can only be achieved for their dissimilar characteristic sizes, thus making the resulting hybrid nanostructure geometry complex for practical realization and large-scale replication. Here, we produced unique amorphous TiO$_2$ nanospheres simultaneously decorated and doped with Au nanoclusters via single-step nanosecond-laser ablation of commercially available TiO$_2$ nanopowders dispersed in aqueous HAuCl$_4$. The fabricated hybrids demonstrate remarkable light-absorbing properties (averaged value $\approx$ 96%) in the visible and near-IR spectral range mediated by bandgap reduction of the laser-processed amorphous TiO$_2$, as well as plasmon resonances of the decorating Au nanoclusters, which was confirmed by combining optical spectroscopy, advanced electron energy loss spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and electromagnetic modeling. Excellent light-absorbing and plasmonic properties of the produced hybrids were implemented to demonstrate catalytically passive SERS biosensor for identification of analytes at trace concentrations and solar steam generator that permitted to increase water evaporation rate by 2.5 times compared with that of pure water under identical one-sun irradiation conditions.

Tropical optimization techniques in multi-criteria decision making with Analytical Hierarchy Process

We apply methods and techniques of tropical optimization to develop a new theoretical and computational framework for the implementation of the Analytic Hierarchy Process in multi-criteria problems of rating alternatives from pairwise comparison data. The framework involves the Chebyshev approximation of pairwise comparison matrices by consistent matrices in the logarithmic scale. We reduce the log-Chebyshev approximation to multidimensional tropical optimization problems, and offer complete direct solutions to the problems in the framework of tropical mathematics. The results obtained provide a closed-form solution to the rating problem of interest as either a unique score vector (up to a positive factor) or as a set of different score vectors. To handle the problem when the solution is not unique, we develop tropical optimization techniques to find those vectors from the solution set that are the most and least differentiating between the alternatives with the highest and lowest scores, and thus can be well representative of the entire solution.

Evidence for periodicity in 43 year-long monitoring of NGC 5548

We present an analysis of 43 years (1972 to 2015) of spectroscopic observations of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548. This includes 12 years of new unpublished observations (2003 to 2015). We compiled about 1600 H$β$ spectra and analyzed the long-term spectral variations of the 5100 Å continuum and the H$β$ line. Our analysis is based on standard procedures including the Lomb-Scargle method, which is known to be rather limited to such heterogeneous data sets, and new method developed specifically for this project that is more robust and reveals a $\sim$5700 day periodicity in the continuum light curve, the H$β$ light curve and the radial velocity curve of the red wing of the H$β$ line. The data are consistent with orbital motion inside the broad emission line region of the source. We discuss several possible mechanisms that can explain this periodicity, including orbiting dusty and dust-free clouds, a binary black hole system, tidal disruption events, and the effect of an orbiting star periodically passing through an accretion disc.

Multifrequency Photo-polarimetric WEBT Observation Campaign on the Blazar S5 0716+714: Source Microvariability and Search for Characteristic Timescales

Here we report on the results of the WEBT photo-polarimetric campaign targeting the blazar S5~0716+71, organized in March 2014 to monitor the source simultaneously in BVRI and near IR filters. The campaign resulted in an unprecedented dataset spanning $\sim 110$\,h of nearly continuous, multi-band observations, including two sets of densely sampled polarimetric data mainly in R filter. During the campaign, the source displayed pronounced variability with peak-to-peak variations of about $30\%$ and "bluer-when-brighter" spectral evolution, consisting of a day-timescale modulation with superimposed hourlong microflares characterized by $\sim 0.1$\,mag flux changes. We performed an in-depth search for quasi-periodicities in the source light curve; hints for the presence of oscillations on timescales of $\sim 3$\,h and $\sim 5$\,h do not represent highly significant departures from a pure red-noise power spectrum. We observed that, at a certain configuration of the optical polarization angle relative to the positional angle of the innermost radio jet in the source, changes in the polarization degree led the total flux variability by about 2\,h; meanwhile, when the relative configuration of the polarization and jet angles altered, no such lag could be noted. The microflaring events, when analyzed as separate pulse emission components, were found to be characterized by a very high polarization degree ($> 30\%$) and polarization angles which differed substantially from the polarization angle of the underlying background component, or from the radio jet positional angle. We discuss the results in the general context of blazar emission and energy dissipation models.

The unusual pre-main-sequence star V718 Per (HMW 15)

The remarkable pre-main-sequence object V718 Per (HMW 15, H187) in the young cluster IC 348 periodically undergoes long-lasting eclipses caused by variable amounts of circumstellar dust in the line-of-sight to the star. It has been speculated that the star is a close binary and similar to another unusual eclipsing object, KH 15D. We have submitted V718 Per to a detailed photometric and spectroscopic study to find out more about the properties of the stellar object and the occulting circumstellar material, and to look for signatures of a possible binary component. Our photometric data show that the eclipses are very symmetric and persistent, and that the extinction deviates only little from what is expected for normal interstellar material. The spectroscopic data, obtained at minimum as well as at maximum brightness, indicate a primordial abundance of Li and a surface effective temperature of about 5200 K. Remarkably, the in-eclipse spectrum shows a significant broadening of the photospheric absorption lines, as well as a weak increase in emission components of H-alpha and the Ca II IR triplet. We did not detect any atomic or molecular features from to the occulting body in the in-eclipse spectrum. We also found no evidence of radial velocity changes in V718 Per to within about +/- 80 m/s, which for an edge-on system corresponds to a maximum companion mass of 6 Jupiter masses. Our observations suggest that V718 Per is a single star, and thus very different from KH 15D. We conclude that V718 Per is surrounded by an edge-on circumstellar disk with an irregular mass distribution orbiting at a distance of 3.3 AU from the star, presumably at the inner disk edge. We ascribe the broadening of photospheric absorption lines during the eclipse to forward scattering of stellar light in the circumstellar dust feature.

Quantization of three-wave equations

The subject of this paper is the consecutive procedure of discretization and quantization of two similar classical integrable systems in three-dimensional space-time: the standard three-wave equations and less known modified three-wave equations. The quantized systems in discrete space-time may be understood as the regularized integrable quantum field theories. Integrability of the theories, and in particular the quantum tetrahedron equations for vertex operators, follow from the quantum auxiliary linear problems. Principal object of the lattice field theories is the Heisenberg discrete time evolution operator constructed with the help of vertex operators.

Ansatz of Hans Bethe for a two-dimensional Bose gas

The method of q-oscillator lattices, proposed recently in [hep-th/0509181], provides the tool for a construction of various integrable models of quantum mechanics in 2+1 dimensional space-time. In contrast to any one dimensional quantum chain, its two dimensional generalizations -- quantum lattices -- admit different geometrical structures. In this paper we consider the q-oscillator model on a special lattice. The model may be interpreted as a two-dimensional Bose gas. The most remarkable feature of the model is that it allows the coordinate Bethe Ansatz: the p-particles' wave function is the sum of plane waves. Consistency conditions is the set of 2p equations for p one-particle wave vectors. These "Bethe Ansatz" equations are the main result of this paper.

Quantum curve in q-oscillator model

A lattice model of interacting q-oscillators, proposed in [V. Bazhanov, S. Sergeev, arXiv:hep-th/0509181], is the quantum mechanical integrable model in 2+1 dimensional space-time. Its layer-to-layer transfer-matrix is a polynomial of two spectral parameters, it may be regarded in the terms of quantum groups both as a sum of sl(N) transfer matrices of a chain of length M and as a sum of sl(M) transfer matrices of a chain of length N for reducible representations. The aim of this paper is to derive the Bethe Ansatz equations for the q-oscillator model entirely in the framework of 2+1 integrability providing the evident rank-size duality.

Integrability of $q$-oscillator lattice model

A simple formulation of an exactly integrable $q$-oscillator model on two dimensional lattice (in 2+1 dimensional space-time) is given. Its interpretation in the terms of 2d quantum inverse scattering method and nested Bethe Ansatz equations is discussed.

Bazhanov-Stroganov model from 3D approach

We apply a 3-dimensional approach to describe a new parametrization of the L-operators for the 2-dimensional Bazhanov-Stroganov (BS) integrable spin model related to the chiral Potts model. This parametrization is based on the solution of the associated classical discrete integrable system. Using a 3-dimensional vertex satisfying a modified tetrahedron equation, we construct an operator which generalizes the BS quantum intertwining matrix S. This operator describes the isospectral deformations of the integrable BS model.

Lattice system of interacting spins in the thermodynamical limit

In this paper we investigate some particular spin lattice (a higher dimensional generalization of a spin chain) related to Zamolodchikov model, in the limit when both sizes of the lattice tend to infinity. An infinite set of bilinear equations, describing a distribution of eigenvalues of infinite set of mutually commuting operators, is derived. The distribution for the maximal eigenvalues is obtained explicitly. The way to obtain the excitations is discussed.

Quantization scheme for modular q-difference equations

Modular pairs of some second order q-difference equations are considered. These equations may be interpreted as a quantum mechanics of a sort of hyperelliptic pendulum. It is shown the quantization of a spectrum may be provided by the condition of the analyticity of the wave function. Baxter's t-Q equations for the quantum relativistic Toda chain in the ``strong coupling regime'' are related to the system considered, and the quantization condition for Q-operator is also considered.

Theta function parameterization and fusion for 3-D integrable Boltzmann weights

We report progress in constructing Boltzmann weights for integrable 3-dimensional lattice spin models. We show that a large class of vertex solutions to the modified tetrahedron equation can be conveniently parameterized in terms of N-th roots of theta-functions on the Jacobian of a compact algebraic curve. Fay's identity guarantees the Fermat relations and the classical equations of motion for the parameters determining the Boltzmann weights. Our parameterization allows to write a simple formula for fused Boltzmann weights R which describe the partition function of an arbitrary open box and which also obey the modified tetrahedron equation. Imposing periodic boundary conditions we observe that the R satisfy the normal tetrahedron equation. The scheme described contains the Zamolodchikov-Baxter-Bazhanov model and the Chessboard model as special cases.

The modified tetrahedron equation and its solutions

A large class of 3-dimensional integrable lattice spin models is constructed. The starting point is an invertible canonical mapping operator in the space of a triple Weyl algebra. This operator is derived postulating a current branching principle together with a Baxter Z-invariance. The tetrahedron equation for this operator follows without further calculations. If the Weyl parameter is taken to be a root of unity, the mapping operator decomposes into a matrix conjugation and a C-number functional mapping. The operator of the matrix conjugation satisfies a modified tetrahedron equation (MTE) in which the "rapidities" are solutions of a classical integrable Hirota-type equation. The matrix elements of this operator can be represented in terms of the Bazhanov-Baxter Fermat curve cyclic functions, or alternatively in terms of Gauss functions. The paper summarizes several recent publications on the subject.

Explicit Free Parameterization of the Modified Tetrahedron Equation

The Modified Tetrahedron Equation (MTE) with affine Weyl quantum variables at N-th root of unity is solved by a rational mapping operator which is obtained from the solution of a linear problem. We show that the solutions can be parameterized in terms of eight free parameters and sixteen discrete phase choices, thus providing a broad starting point for the construction of 3-dimensional integrable lattice models. The Fermat curve points parameterizing the representation of the mapping operator in terms of cyclic functions are expressed in terms of the independent parameters. An explicit formula for the density factor of the MTE is derived. For the example N=2 we write the MTE in full detail. We also discuss a solution of the MTE in terms of bosonic continuum functions.

Spectral curves and parameterizations of a discrete integrable 3-dimensional model

We consider a discrete classical integrable model on the 3-dimensional cubic lattice. The solutions of this model can be used to parameterize the Boltzmann weights of the different 3-dimensional spin models. We have found the general solution of this model constructed in terms of the theta-functions defined on an arbitrary compact algebraic curve. The imposing of the periodic boundary conditions fixes the algebraic curve. We have shown that in this case the curve coincides with the spectral one of the auxiliary linear problem. In the case when the curve is a rational one, the soliton solutions have been constructed.

Quantum relativistic Toda chain at root of unity: isospectrality, modified Q-operator and functional Bethe ansatz

We investigate an N-state spin model called quantum relativistic Toda chain and based on the unitary finite dimensional representations of the Weyl algebra with q being N-th primitive root of unity. Parameters of the finite dimensional representation of the local Weyl algebra form the classical discrete integrable system. Nontrivial dynamics of the classical counterpart corresponds to isospectral transformations of the spin system. Similarity operators are constructed with the help of modified Baxter's Q-operators. The classical counterpart of the modified Q-operator for the initial homogeneous spin chain is a Baecklund transformation. This transformation creates an extra Hirota-type soliton in a parameterization of the chain structure. Special choice of values of solitonic amplitudes yields a degeneration of spin eigenstates, leading to the quantum separation of variables, or the functional Bethe ansatz. A projector to the separated eigenstates is constructed explicitly as a product of modified Q-operators.

Relativistic Toda chain at root of unity III. Relativistic Toda chain hierarchy

The hierarchy of the classical nonlinear integrable equations associated with relativistic Toda chain model is considered. It is formulated for the N-th powers of the quantum operators of the corresponding quantum integrable models. Following the ideas of the paper hep-th/9606144 it is shown how one can obtain such a system from 2D Toda lattice system. The reduction procedure is described explicitly. The soliton solutions for the relativistic Toda chain are constructed using results of solv-int/9304002 in terms of the rational tau-functions. The vanishing properties of these tau-functions are investigated.
