Perfect strategies for non-signalling games

We unify and consolidate various results about non-signall-ing games, a subclass of non-local two-player one-round games, by introducing and studying several new families of games and establishing general theorems about them, which extend a number of known facts in a variety of special cases. Among these families are {\it reflexive games,} which are characterised as the hardest non-signalling games that can be won using a given set of strategies. We introduce {\it imitation games,} in which the players display linked behaviour, and which contains as subclasses the classes of variable assignment games, binary constraint system games, synchronous games, many games based on graphs, and {\it unique} games. We associate a C*-algebra $C^*(\mathcal{G})$ to any imitation game $\mathcal{G}$, and show that the existence of perfect quantum commuting (resp.\ quantum, local) strategies of $\mathcal{G}$ can be characterised in terms of properties of this C*-algebra, extending known results about synchronous games. We single out a subclass of imitation games, which we call {\it mirror games,} and provide a characterisation of their quantum commuting strategies that has an algebraic flavour, showing in addition that their approximately quantum perfect strategies arise from amenable traces on the encoding C*-algebra. We describe the main classes of non-signalling correlations in terms of states on operator system tensor products.

A universal, memory-assisted entropic uncertainty relation

We derive a new memory-assisted entropic uncertainty relation for non-degenerate Hermitian observables where both quantum correlations, in the form of conditional von Neumann entropy, and quantum discord between system and memory play an explicit role. Our relation is `universal', in the sense that it does not depend on the specific observable, but only on properties of the quantum state. We contrast such an uncertainty relation with previously known memory-assisted relations based on entanglement and correlations. Further, we present a detailed comparative study of entanglement- and discord-assisted entropic uncertainty relations for systems of two qubits -- one of which plays the role of the memory -- subject to several forms of independent quantum noise, in both Markovian and non-Markovian regimes. We thus show explicitly that, partly due to the ubiquity and inherent resilience of quantum discord, discord-tightened entropic uncertainty relations often offer a better estimate of the uncertainties in play.

Linking the Quasi-Normal and Natural Modes of an open cavity

The present paper proposes a comparison between the extinction theorem and the Sturm-Liouville theory approaches for calculating the e.m. field inside an optical cavity. We discuss for the first time to the best of our knowledge, in the framework of classical electrodynamics, a simple link between the Quasi Normal Modes (QNMs) and the Natural Modes (NMs) for one-dimensional (1D), two-sided, open cavities. The QNM eigenfrequencies and eigenfunctions are calculated for a linear Fabry-Perot (FP) cavity. The first-order Born approximation is applied to the same cavity in order to compare the first-order Born approximated and the actual QNM eigenfunctions of the cavity. We demonstrate that the first-order Born approximation for an FP cavity introduces symmetry breaking: in fact, each Born approximated QNM eigenfunction produces values below or above the actual QNM eigenfunction value on the terminal surfaces of the same cavity. Consequently, the two error-functions for an approximated QNM are not equal in proximity to the two terminal surfaces of the cavity.

Quasi Normal Modes description of transmission properties for Photonic Band Gap structures

In this paper, we use the 'Quasi Normal Modes' (QNM) approach for discussing the transmission properties of double-side opened optical cavities: in particular, this approach is specified for one dimensional (1D) 'Photonic Band Gap' (PBG) structures. Moreover, we conjecture that the density of the modes (DOM) is a dynamical variable which has the flexibility of varying with respect to the boundary conditions as well as the initial conditions; in fact, the e.m. field generated by two monochromatic counter-propagating pump waves leads to interference effects inside a quarter-wave (QW) symmetric 1D-PBG structure. Finally, here, for the first time, a large number of theoretical assumptions on QNM metrics for an open cavity, never discussed in literature, are proved, and a simple and direct method to calculate the QNM norm for a 1D-PBG structure is reported.
