Molecular Dynamics Modeling of Epoxy Resins using the Reactive Interface Force Field

Predictive computational modeling of polymer materials is necessary for the efficient design of composite materials and the corresponding processing methods. Molecular dynamics (MD) modeling is especially important for establishing accurate processing-structure-property relationships for neat resins. For MD modeling of amorphous polymer materials, an accurate force field is fundamental to reliable prediction of properties. Reactive force fields, in which chemical bonds can be formed or broken, offer further capability in predicting the mechanical behavior of amorphous polymers subjected to relatively large deformations. To this end, the Reactive Interface Force Field (IFF-R) has been recently developed to provide an efficient means to predict the behavior of materials under these conditions. Although IFF-R has been proven to be accurate for some crystalline organic and inorganic systems, it has not yet been proven to be accurate for amorphous polymer systems. The objective of this study is to use IFF-R to predict the thermo-mechanical properties of three different epoxy systems and validate with experimental measurements. The results indicate that IFF-R predicts thermo-mechanical properties that agree closely with experiment. Therefore, IFF-R can be used to reliably establish mechanical properties of polymers on the molecular level for future design of new composite materials and processing methods.

Finch-Skea Solutions of Anisotropic Stellar Models in $f(R)$ Gravity

Present paper deals with the composition and modelling of compact dense astrophysical bodies under the framework of $f(R)$ gravity. The model is employed on various observed strange stars viz., SMC X-1, SAX J1808.4-3658, Swift J1818.0-1607, PSR J1614-2230 and PSR J0348+0432. Upon setting the appropriate value of dimensionless coupling parameter $λ$, the physical parameters such as the density, the radial and tangential pressures were obtained. Mass-Radius relation without presuming any equation of state is capable enough to accommodate all strange stars nearly having solar mass up to 2.5. The physical viability of the model is examined for all the aforementioned stars and it is found that all the regularity and stability conditions are satisfied.

Yottixel -- An Image Search Engine for Large Archives of Histopathology Whole Slide Images

With the emergence of digital pathology, searching for similar images in large archives has gained considerable attention. Image retrieval can provide pathologists with unprecedented access to the evidence embodied in already diagnosed and treated cases from the past. This paper proposes a search engine specialized for digital pathology, called Yottixel, a portmanteau for "one yotta pixel," alluding to the big-data nature of histopathology images. The most impressive characteristic of Yottixel is its ability to represent whole slide images (WSIs) in a compact manner. Yottixel can perform millions of searches in real-time with a high search accuracy and low storage profile. Yottixel uses an intelligent indexing algorithm capable of representing WSIs with a mosaic of patches by converting them into a small number of methodically extracted barcodes, called "Bunch of Barcodes" (BoB), the most prominent performance enabler of Yottixel. The performance of the prototype platform is qualitatively tested using 300 WSIs from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) and 2,020 WSIs from The Cancer Genome Atlas Program (TCGA) provided by the National Cancer Institute. Both datasets amount to more than 4,000,000 patches of 1000x1000 pixels. We report three sets of experiments that show that Yottixel can accurately retrieve organs and malignancies, and its semantic ordering shows good agreement with the subjective evaluation of human observers.

Anisotropic Compact Star Model Satisfying Karmarkar Conditions

A new class of solutions describing the composition of compact stars has been proposed, assuming that the fluid distribution inside the star is anisotropic. This is achieved by assuming the appropriate metric potential and then solving Einstein's field equations using Karmarkar conditions [Karmarkar K. R., \textit{Proc. Indian Acad. Sci.} \textbf{27} (1948) 56] to derive the expressions for star density, the radial and tangential pressures in terms of the constants A, B, a paramter `a' and the curvature parameter R. The equations thus obtained have been passed through rigorous conditional analysis. It is further shown that the model is physically viable and mathematically well-behaved, fulfilling the requisite conditions viz., regularity condition, strong energy condition, causality condition, etc. Observed star candidates including EXO 1785-248, SMC X-1, SAXJ1808.43658(SS2), HER X-1, 4U 1538-52, Cen X-3 and LMC X-4 were found to conform to a good approximation through the outcome of this model for a=0.5.

Balakrishnan Alpha Skew Normal Distribution: Properties and Applications

In this paper a new type of alpha skew distribution is proposed under Balakrishnan Mechanism and some of its related distributions are investigated. The moments and distributional properties are also studied. Suitability of the proposed distribution is tested by conducting data fitting experiments and model adequacy is checked via AIC, BIC in comparison with some related distributions. Likelihood ratio test is carried out to discriminate between normal and proposed distribution.

A New One Parameter Bimodal Skew Logistic Distribution and its Applications

In this paper an attempt is made to develop a new bimodal alpha skew logistic distribution under Balakrishnan (2002) mechanism. Some of its distributional as well as moments properties are studied. Some extensions of this new distribution are also briefly introduced. Finally, suitability of the proposed distribution is checked with the help of data fitting examples of real life.

LISA verification binaries with updated distances from Gaia Data Release 2

Ultracompact binaries with orbital periods less than a few hours will dominate the gravitational wave signal in the mHz regime. Until recently, 10 systems were expected have a predicted gravitational wave signal strong enough to be detectable by the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), the so-called `verification binaries'. System parameters, including distances, are needed to provide an accurate prediction of the expected gravitational wave strength to be measured by LISA. Using parallaxes from {\sl Gaia} Data Release 2 we calculate signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) for $\approx$50 verification binary candidates. We find that 11 binaries reach a SNR$\geq$20, two further binaries reaching a SNR$\geq$5 and three more systems are expected to have a SNR$\approx$5 after four years integration with LISA. For these 16 systems we present predictions of the gravitational wave amplitude ($\mathcal{A}$) and parameter uncertainties from Fisher information matrix on the amplitude ($\mathcal{A}$) and inclination ($ι$).

Initial data release of the Kepler-INT Survey

This paper describes the first data release of the Kepler-INT Survey (KIS), that covers a 116 deg2 region of the Cygnus and Lyra constellations. The Kepler field is the target of the most intensive search for transiting planets to date. Despite the fact that the Kepler mission provides superior time series photometry, with an enormous impact on all areas of stellar variability, its field lacks optical photometry complete to the confusion limit of the Kepler instrument necessary for selecting various classes of targets. For this reason, we follow the observing strategy and data reduction method used in the IPHAS and UVEX galactic plane surveys in order to produce a deep optical survey of the Kepler field. This initial release concerns data taken between May and August 2011, using the Isaac Newton Telescope on the island of La Palma. Four broadband filters were used, U, g, r, i, as well as one narrowband one, Halpha, reaching down to a 10-sigma limit of around 20th mag in the Vega system. Observations covering around 50 deg2, thus about half of the field, passed our quality control thresholds and constitute this first data release. We derive a global photometric calibration by placing the KIS magnitudes as close as possible to the Kepler Input Catalog (KIC) photometry. The initial data release catalogue containing around 6 million sources from all the good photometric fields is available for download from the KIS webpage, as well as via MAST.

Possible routes for synthesis of new boron-rich Fe-B and Fe(1-x)Cr(x)B4 compounds

We use ab initio calculations to examine thermodynamic factors that could promote the formation of recently proposed unique oP10-FeB4 and oP12-FeB2 compounds. We demonstrate that these compact boron-rich phases are stabilized further under pressure. We also show that chromium tetraboride is more stable in the new oP10 rather than the reported oI10 structure which opens up the possibility of realizing an oP10-Fe(x)Cr(1-x)B4 pseudobinary material. In addition to exhibiting remarkable electronic features, oP10-FeB4 and oP12-FeB2 are expected to be harder than the known Fe-B compounds commonly used for hard coating applications.

New Superconducting and Semiconducting Fe-B Compounds Predicted with an Ab Initio Evolutionary Search

New candidate ground states at 1:4, 1:2, and 1:1 compositions are identified in the well-known Fe-B system via a combination of ab initio high-throughput and evolutionary searches. We show that the proposed oP12-FeB2 stabilizes by a break up of 2D boron layers into 1D chains while oP10-FeB4 stabilizes by a distortion of a 3D boron network. The uniqueness of these configurations gives rise to a set of remarkable properties: oP12-FeB2 is expected to be the first semiconducting metal diboride and oP10-FeB4 is shown to have the potential for phonon-mediated superconductivity with a Tc of 15-20 K.

PAH emission from Herbig AeBe stars

We present spectra of a sample of Herbig Ae and Be (HAeBe) stars obtained with the Infrared Spectrograph on the Spitzer Space Telescope. All but one of the Herbig stars show emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and seven of the spectra show PAH emission, but no silicate emission at 10 microns. The central wavelengths of the 6.2, 7.7--8.2, and 11.3 micron emission features decrease with stellar temperature, indicating that the PAHs are less photo-processed in cooler radiation fields. The apparent low level of photo processing in HAeBe stars, relative to other PAH emission sources, implies that the PAHs are newly exposed to the UV-optical radiation fields from their host stars. HAeBe stars show a variety of PAH emission intensities and ionization fractions, but a narrow range of PAH spectral classifications based on positions of major PAH feature centers. This may indicate that, regardless of their locations relative to the stars, the PAH molecules are altered by the same physical processes in the proto-planetary disks of intermediate-mass stars. Analysis of the mid-IR spectral energy distributions indicates that our sample likely includes both radially flared and more flattened/settled disk systems, but we do not see the expected correlation of overall PAH emission with disk geometry. We suggest that the strength of PAH emission from HAeBe stars may depend not only on the degree of radial flaring, but also on the abundance of PAHs in illuminated regions of the disks and possibly on the vertical structure of the inner disk as well.

Photon-Induced Magnetization Changes in Single-Molecule Magnets

Microwave radiation applied to single-molecule magnets can induce large magnetization changes when the radiation is resonant with transitions between spin levels. These changes are interpreted as due to resonant heating of the sample by the microwaves. Pulsed-radiation studies show that the magnetization continues to decrease after the radiation has been turned off with a rate that is consistent with the spin's characteristic relaxation rate. The measured rate increases with pulse duration and microwave power, indicating that greater absorbed radiation energy results in a higher sample temperature. We also performed numerical simulations that qualitatively reproduce many of the experimental results. Our results indicate that experiments aimed at measuring the magnetization dynamics between two levels resonant with the radiation must be done much faster than the >20-microsecond time scales probed in these experiments.
