Measurement of reconstructed final-state kinematics in charged-current interactions on water using the J-PARC $\nu_\mu$ beam and NINJA emulsion detector

We present a study of charged-particle multiplicities and the kinematic distributions of muons, protons, and charged pions in a flux-integrated sample of charged-current inclusive $\nu_\mu$ interactions on water recorded with the NINJA nuclear emulsion detector exposed to the J-PARC $\nu_\mu$-focused beam. The data correspond to an exposure of $4.63\times10^{20}$ protons on target, with a neutrino energy spectrum peaked at 0.7 GeV. In this analysis, 82 events are selected from a fiducial water volume with a mass of 3.9 kg, corresponding to 5% of the total water target mass exposed during the run. The reconstructed distributions are compared with Monte Carlo predictions based on the interaction model used in the T2K experiment. The observed distributions are generally consistent with the predictions within the estimated uncertainties, although the proton angular distribution exhibits some tension with the prediction. The results are currently limited by statistical uncertainties. This analysis provides the first study of proton kinematics with sensitivity to proton momenta as low as 200 MeV/$c$ with a $\nu_\mu$-focused beam on a water target using nuclear emulsion data and establishes the analysis framework for future measurements with substantially larger NINJA data samples.

Performance of the electromagnetic and hadronic prototype segments of the ALICE Forward Calorimeter

We present the performance of a full-length prototype of the ALICE Forward Calorimeter (FoCal). The detector is composed of a silicon-tungsten electromagnetic sampling calorimeter with longitudinal and transverse segmentation (FoCal-E) of about 20$X_0$ and a hadronic copper-scintillating-fiber calorimeter (FoCal-H) of about 5$λ_{\rm int}$. The data were taken between 2021 and 2023 at the CERN PS and SPS beam lines with hadron (electron) beams up to energies of 350 (300) GeV. Regarding FoCal-E, we report a comprehensive analysis of its response to minimum ionizing particles across all pad layers. The longitudinal shower profile of electromagnetic showers is measured with a layer-wise segmentation of 1$X_0$. As a projection to the performance of the final detector in electromagnetic showers, we demonstrate linearity in the full energy range, and show that the energy resolution fulfills the requirements for the physics needs. Additionally, the performance to separate two-showers events was studied by quantifying the transverse shower width. Regarding FoCal-H, we report a detailed analysis of the response to hadron beams between 60 and 350 GeV. The results are compared to simulations obtained with a Geant4 model of the test beam setup, which in particular for FoCal-E are in good agreement with the data. The energy resolution of FoCal-E was found to be lower than 3% at energies larger than 100 GeV. The response of FoCal-H to hadron beams was found to be linear, albeit with a significant intercept that is about factor 2 larger than in simulations. Its resolution, which is non-Gaussian and generally larger than in simulations, was quantified using the FWHM, and decreases from about 16% at 100 GeV to about 11% at 350 GeV. The discrepancy to simulations, which is particularly evident at low hadron energies, needs to be further investigated.

New determination of the branching ratio of the structure dependent radiative $K^{+} \to e^{+} ν_{e} γ$ decay

The branching ratio of the structure dependent (SD) radiative $K^{+} \to e^{+} ν_{e} γ$ decay relative to that of the $K^+\rightarrow e^+ ν_{e} (γ)$ decay including the internal bremsstrahlung (IB) process ($K_{e2(γ)}$) has been measured in the J-PARC E36 experiment using plastic scintillator/lead sandwich detectors. In the analysis, the effect of IB was also taken into account in the SD radiative decay as $K_{e2γ(γ)}^{\rm SD}$. By combining the new data with the previously reported result of the E36 experiment using a CsI(Tl) calorimeter after revision for the IB correction for $K_{e2γ(γ)}^{\rm SD}$, a new value $Br(K_{e2γ(γ)}^{\rm SD})/Br(K_{e2(γ)})=1.20\pm0.07$ has been determined, which is consistent with a recent lattice QCD calculation, but larger than the expectation of Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) at order $O(p^4)$ and the previous KLOE value. Also, using the method to relate form factor and branching ratio described in the KLOE paper, the present result is consistent with the form factor prediction based on a gauged nonlocal chiral quark model, but larger than ChPT at order $O(p^6)$.

Measurement of structure dependent radiative $K^{+} \rightarrow e^{+} νγ$ decays using stopped positive kaons

The structure dependent radiative $K^+ \rightarrow e^+ νγ$ ($K_{e2γ}^{\rm SD^+}$) decay was investigated with stopped positive kaons. The $e^+$ momentum spectra containing 574$\pm$30 $K_{e2γ}^{\rm SD^+}$ events with a $K^+ \rightarrow μ^+ ν$ ($K_{\mu2}$) background of 28$\pm$19 events were measured with and without a photon in coincidence and analyzed with Monte Carlo simulations for acceptance and detector response to extract the ratio of the branching ratio of the $K_{e2γ}^{\rm SD^+}$ decay and the $K^+ \rightarrow e^+ ν$ decay including the internal bremsstrahlung process ($K_{e2(γ)}$). A value of $Br(K_{e2γ}^{\rm SD^+}) / Br(K_{e2(γ)}) = 1.12\pm0.07_{\rm stat} \pm 0.04_{\rm syst}$ was obtained. This indicates a partial branching ratio, $Br(K_{e2γ}^{\rm SD^+}, ~{p_e>200~{\rm MeV}/c}, ~{E_γ>10~{\rm MeV}})/Br(K_{\mu2}) =(1.85 \pm 0.11_{\rm{stat}} \pm 0.07_{\rm{syst}}) \times10^{-5}$, which is $25\%(\sim$2.5$σ)$ higher than the previous experimental result.

Global existence of solutions to 2-D Navier-Stokes flow with non-decaying initial data in half-plane

We investigate the Navier-Stokes initial boundary value problem in the half-plane $R^2_+$ with initial data $u_0 \in L^\infty(R^2_+)\cap J_0^2(R^2_+)$ or with non decaying initial data $u_0\in L^\infty(R^2_+) \cap J_0^p(R^2_+), p > 2$ . We introduce a technique that allows to solve the two-dimesional problem, further, but not least, it can be also employed to obtain weak solutions, as regards the non decaying initial data, to the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes IBVP. This last result is the first of its kind.

The design and basic performance of a Spiral Fiber Tracker for the J-PARC E36 experiment

A spiral fiber tracker (SFT) has been designed and produced for the J-PARC E36 experiment as an element of the tracking system for conducting a high-resolution momentum measurement of charge particles from kaon decays. A novel technique to wind the pre-made fiber ribbons spirally was employed for the configuration with four detector layers made of 1 mm diameter plastic scintillating fibers. Good position alignment and sufficiently high detection efficiency for charged particles with minimum ionizing energy were confirmed in cosmic ray test. The tracker was successfully used in the E36 experiment.

Cloud-cloud collision as a trigger of the high-mass star formation; a molecular line study in RCW120

RCW120 is a Galactic HII region having a beautiful ring shape bright in infrared. Our new CO J=1-0 and J=3-2 observations performed with the NANTEN2, Mopra, and ASTE telescopes have revealed that two molecular clouds with a velocity separation of 20km/s are both physically associated with RCW120. The cloud at -8km/s apparently traces the infrared ring, while the other cloud at -28km/s is distributed just outside the opening of the infrared ring, interacting with the HII region as supported by high kinetic temperature of the molecular gas and by the complementary distribution with the ionized gas. A spherically expanding shell driven by the HII region is usually discussed as the origin of the observed ring structure in RCW120. Our observations, however, indicate no evidence of the expanding motion in the velocity space, being inconsistent with the expanding shell model. We here postulate an alternative that, by applying the model introduced by Habe & Ohta (1992), the exciting O star in RCW120 was formed by a collision between the present two clouds at a colliding velocity ~30km/s. In the model, the observed infrared ring can be interpreted as the cavity created in the larger cloud by the collision, whose inner surface is illuminated by the strong UV radiation after the birth of the O star. We discuss that the present cloud-cloud collision scenario explains the observed signatures of RCW120, i.e., its ring morphology, coexistence of the two clouds and their large velocity separation, and absence of the expanding motion.

Effects of radiation damage caused by proton irradiation on Multi-Pixel Photon Counters (MPPCs)

We have investigated the effects caused by proton-induced radiation damage on Multi-Pixel Photon Counter (MPPC), a pixelized photon detector developed by Hamamatsu Photonics. The leakage current of irradiated MPPC samples linearly increases with total irradiated doses due to radiation damage, which is not completely recovered even after a year from the irradiation. No significant change has been observed in the gains at least up to 8.0 Gy ($9.1\times10^7$ n/mm$^2$ in 1 MeV neutron equivalent fluence, $Φ_{\rm eq}$). The device has completely lost its photon-counting capability due to baseline fluctuations and noise pile-up after 21 Gy irradiation ($2.4\times10^8$ n/mm$^2$ in $Φ_{\rm eq}$), which might be problematic for some applications, such as ring-imaging Cherenkov detectors. We have found that the pulse-height resolution has been slightly deteriorated after 42 Gy irradiation ($4.8\times10^8$ n/mm$^2$ in $Φ_{\rm eq}$), where the measured sample has been illuminated with a few hundred photons. This effect should be considered in the case of energy-measurement applications.

High-Tc Superconductivity and Antiferromagnetism in Multilayered Copper Oxides - A New Paradigm of Superconducting Mechanism -

High-temperature superconductivity (HTSC) in copper oxides emerges on a layered CuO2 plane when an antiferromagnetic Mott insulator is doped with mobile hole carriers. We review extensive studies of multilayered copper oxides by site-selective nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), which have uncovered the intrinsic phase diagram of antiferromagnetism (AFM) and HTSC for a disorder-free CuO2 plane with hole carriers. We present our experimental findings such as the existence of the AFM metallic state in doped Mott insulators, the uniformly mixed phase of AFM and HTSC, and the emergence of d-wave SC with a maximum Tc just outside a critical carrier density, at which the AFM moment on a CuO2 plane disappears. These results can be accounted for by the Mott physics based on the t-J model. The superexchange interaction J_in among spins plays a vital role as a glue for Cooper pairs or mobile spin-singlet pairs, in contrast to the phonon-mediated attractive interaction among electrons established in the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory. We remark that the attractive interaction for raising the $T_c$ of HTSC up to temperatures as high as 160 K is the large J_in (~0.12 eV), which binds electrons of opposite spins to be on neighboring sites, and that there are no bosonic glues. It is the Coulomb repulsive interaction U(> 6 eV) among Cu-3d electrons that plays a central role in the physics behind high-Tc phenomena. A new paradigm of the SC mechanism opens to strongly correlated electron matter.

High-T_c Superconductivity with T_c = 52 K under Antiferromagnetic Order in Five-layered Cuprate Ba_2Ca_4Cu_5O_10(F,O)_2 with T_N = 175 K: 19F- and Cu-NMR Studies

We report on the observation of high-T_c superconductivity (SC) emerging with the background of an antiferromagnetic (AFM) order in the five-layered cuprate Ba_2Ca_4Cu_5O_10(F,O)_2 through 19F-NMR and zero-field Cu-NMR studies. The measurements of spectrum and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rates 19(1/T_1) of 19F-NMR give convincing evidence for the AFM order taking place below T_N = 175 K and for the onset of SC below T_c = 52 K, hence both coexisting. The zero-field Cu-NMR study has revealed that AFM moments at Cu sites are 0.14 mu_B at outer CuO_2 layers and 0.20 mu_B at inner ones. We remark that an intimate coupling exists between the AFM state and the SC order parameter below T_c = 52 K; the spin alignment in the AFM state is presumably changed in the SC-AFM mixed state.

Uniform mixing of antiferromagnetism and high-T_c superconductivity in multilayered copper oxides Ba_2Ca_{n-1}Cu_nO_{2n}F_2 with apical fluorines (n=2,3,4): Cu-NMR/NQR and F-NMR

We report Cu-NMR/NQR and F-NMR studies on the multilayered high-T_c copper oxides Ba_2Ca_{n-1}Cu_nO_{2n}F_2 with n=2,3,4, where n is the number of CuO_2 planes. It is revealed that bi-layered Ba_2CaCu_2O_4F_2 is an underdoped superconductor with hole carriers, which are introduced into CuO_2 planes by an unexpected deviation from the nominal content of apical fluorines. In a previous paper, we proposed a self-doping mechanism as the origin of carrier doping in n=3 and n=4; in the mechanism, electrons are transferred from the inner CuO_2 plane (IP) to the outer one (OP). However, since it has been found that the bi-layered compound is hole doped, we have reexamined the superconducting and magnetic properties in n=3 and n=4 by Cu-NMR/NQR and F-NMR. The extensive NMR studies have confirmed that the apical-fluorine compounds are not self-doped but hole-doped, and that antiferromagnetism (AFM) and superconductivity (SC) coexist in a single CuO_2 plane. In n=4, the AFM ordering occurs at T_N = 80 K, well above T_c=55 K, where the respective AFM moments are M_AFM=0.11 mu_B and 0.18 mu_B at the OP and the IP. In n=3, on the other hand, the underdoped single IP exhibits a spontaneous moment M_AFM=0.12 mu_B at low temperatures and a peak in the nuclear-spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 of F at T_N=23 K, much lower than T_c = 76 K. We note that the increase in the number of IPs from one to two leads to an increase in T_N due to strengthening the interlayer coupling, although the doping levels for both compounds are almost comparable. The present results strongly suggest that the uniform mixing of AFM and SC is a general property inherent to a single CuO_2 plane in the underdoped regime for hole-doping.

Antiferromagnetic phase transition in four-layered high-T_c superconductors Ba_2Ca_3Cu_4O_8(F_yO_{1-y})_2 with T_c=55-102 K: Cu- and F-NMR studies

We report on magnetic characteristics in four-layered high-T_c superconductors Ba_2Ca_3Cu_4O_8(F_yO_{1-y})_2 with apical fluorine through Cu- and F-NMR measurements. The substitution of oxygen for fluorine at the apical site increases the carrier density (N_h) and T_c from 55 K up to 102 K. The NMR measurements reveal that antiferromagnetic order, which can uniformly coexist with superconductivity, exists up to N_h = 0.15, which is somewhat smaller than N_h = 0.17 being the quantum critical point (QCP) for five-layered compounds. The fact that the QCP for the four-layered compounds moves to a region of lower carrier density than for five-layered ones ensures that the decrease in the number of CuO_2 layers makes an interlayer magnetic coupling weaker.

Genuine Phase Diagram of Homogeneously Doped CuO2 Plane in High-Tc Cuprate Superconductors

We report a genuine phase diagram for a disorder-free CuO_2 plane based on the precise evaluation of the local hole density (N_h) by site-selective Cu-NMR studies on five-layered high-Tc cuprates. It has been unraveled that (1) the antiferromagnetic metallic state (AFMM) is robust up to N_h=0.17, (2) the uniformly mixed phase of superconductivity (SC) and AFMM is realized at N_h< 0.17, (3) the tetracritical point for the AFMM/(AFMM+SC)/SC/PM(Paramagnetism) phases may be present at N_h=0.15 and T=75 K, (4) Tc is maximum close to a quantum critical point (QCP) at which the AFM order collapses, suggesting the intimate relationship between the high-Tc SC and the AFM order. The results presented here strongly suggest that the AFM interaction plays the vital role as the glue for the Cooper pairs, which will lead us to a genuine understanding of why the Tc of cuprate superconductors is so high.

Forward coherent $ϕ$-meson photoproduction from deuterons near threshold

Differential cross sections and decay asymmetries for coherent $ϕ$-meson photoproduction from deuterons were measured for the first time at forward angles using linearly polarized photons at $E_γ$= 1.5-2.4 GeV. This reaction offers a unique way to directly access natural-parity Pomeron dynamics and gluon exchange at low energies. The cross sections at zero degrees increase with increasing photon energy. The decay asymmetries demonstrate a complete dominance of natural-parity exchange processes, showing that isovector unnatural-parity $π$-meson exchange is small. Nevertheless the deduced cross sections of $ϕ$-mesons from nucleons contributed by isoscalar t-channel exchange processes are not well described by the conventional Pomeron model.

The design and performance of the ZEUS Micro Vertex detector

In order to extend the tracking acceptance, to improve the primary and secondary vertex reconstruction and thus enhancing the tagging capabilities for short lived particles, the ZEUS experiment at the HERA Collider at DESY installed a silicon strip vertex detector. The barrel part of the detector is a 63 cm long cylinder with silicon sensors arranged around an elliptical beampipe. The forward part consists of four circular shaped disks. In total just over 200k channels are read out using $2.9 {\rm m^2}$ of silicon. In this report a detailed overview of the design and construction of the detector is given and the performance of the completed system is reviewed.

Uniform Mixing of Antiferromagnetism and High-Tc Superconductivity in Electron-doped Layers in Four-layered Ba2Ca3Cu4O8F2 : A New Phenomenon in an Electron Underdoped RegimePhenomenon in an Electron Underdoped Regime

We report Cu- and F-NMR studies on a four-layered high-temperature superconductor Ba2Ca3Cu4O8F2(0234F(2.0)) with apical fluorine (F-1), an undoped 55 K-superconductor with a nominal Cu2+ valence on average. We reveal that this compound exhibits the antiferromagnetism (AFM) with a Neel temperature TN=100 K despite being a Tc= 55 K-superconductor. Through a comparison with a related tri-layered cuprate Ba2Ca2Cu3O6F2 (0223F(2.0)), it is demonstrated that electrons are transferred from the inner plane (IP) to the outer plane (OP) in 0234F(2.0) and 0223F(2.0), confirming the self-doped high-temperature superconductivity (HTSC) having electron and hole doping in a single compound. Remarlably, uniform mixing of AFM and HTSC takes place in both the electron-doped OPs and the hole-doped IPs in 0234F(2.0).

Measurement of K^+ \to π^0 μ^+ νγdecay using stopped kaons

The K^+ \to π^0 μ^+ νγ($K_{μ3 γ}$) decay has been measured with stopped positive kaons at the KEK 12 GeV proton synchrotron. A $K_{μ3 γ}$ sample containing 125 events was obtained. The partial branching ratio $Br(K_{μ3 γ}, E_γ>30 {\rm MeV}, θ_{μ^+ γ}>20^{\circ})$ was found to be $[2.4 \pm 0.5(stat) \pm 0.6(syst)]\times 10^{-5}$, which is in good agreement with theoretical predictions.

Measurement of $K^+ \to π^0 π^0 e^+ ν$ ($K_{e4}^{00}$) decay using stopped positive kaons

The $K^+ \to π^0 π^0 e^+ ν$ ($K_{e4}^{00}$) decay has been measured with stopped positive kaons for a data sample of 216 events. A comparison of the observed spectra with a Monte Carlo simulation determined the $K_{e4}^{00}$ form factor. The results are compatible with the $K^+ \to π^+ π^- e^+ ν$ data, as estimated from the $ΔI=1/2$ rule. We also established that the $K_{e4}^{00}$ channel can be used to determine the $π$-$π$ scattering lengths.
