Layer dependent band dispersion and correlations using tunable Soft X-ray ARPES

Soft X-ray Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy is applied to study in-plane band dispersions of Nickel as a function of probing depth. Photon energies between 190 and 780 eV were used to effectively probe up to 3-7 layers. The results show layer dependent band dispersion of the Delta_2 minority-spin band which crosses the Fermi level in 3 or more layers, in contrast to known top 1-2 layers dispersion obtained using ultra-violet rays. The layer dependence corresponds to an increased value of exchange splitting and suggests reduced correlation effects in the bulk compared to the surface.

Bulk Electronic structure of Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_{2}$.1.3H$_{2}$O

High-energy (h$ν$ = 5.95 keV) synchrotron Photoemission spectroscopy (PES) is used to study bulk electronic structure of Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_{2}$.1.3H$_{2}$O, the layered superconductor. In contrast to 3-dimensional doped Co oxides, Co $\it{2p}$ core level spectra show well-separated Co$^{3+}$ and Co$^{4+}$ ions. Cluster calculations suggest low spin Co$^{3+}$ and Co$^{4+}$ character, and a moderate on-site Coulomb correlation energy U$_{dd}\sim$3-5.5 eV. Photon dependent valence band PES identifies Co $\it{3d}$ and O $\it{2p}$ derived states, in near agreement with band structure calculations.

Dynamical symmetry breaking under core excitation in graphite: Polarization correlation in soft X-ray recombination emission

A recombination emission spectrum is applied to study the local lattice distortion due to core excitation in graphite. The recombination emission spectrum reveals a long low-energy tail when the C $1s$ electron is excited to the $σ^*$ core exciton state. This indicates a large local lattice distortion around the excited carbon atom within a core hole lifetime ($\sim$10fs). Theoretical calculation based upon an ionic cluster model well reproduces the experiments. The strong polarization correlation between incident and emitted X-rays is conclusive evidence of symmetry breaking in the core exciton state due to coupling with asymmetric vibrational modes.

Electronic Structure of B-2$pσ$ and $pπ$ States in MgB$_2$, AlB$_2$ and ZrB$_2$ Single Crystals

The effect of electron correlation (EC) on the electronic structure in MgB$_2$, AlB$_2$ and ZrB$_2$, is studied by examining the partial density of states (PDOS) of B-2$pσ$ and $pπ$ orbitals using the polarization dependence of x-ray emission and absorption spectra. The discrepancies between observed and calculated PDOSs cannot be attributed to EC effects. The present results suggest that the EC effect is less than the experimental error ($\sim$ 0.2 eV), which indirectly supports a scenario that electron-phonon interaction plays an essential role in the occurrence of superconductivity.

Definitive experimental evidence for two-band superconductivity in MgB2

The superconducting gap of MgB2 has been studied by high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The momentum(k)-resolving capability of ARPES enables us to identify the s- and p-orbital derived bands predicted from band structure calculations and to successfully measure the superconducting gap on each band. The results show that superconducting gaps with values of 5.5 meV and 2.2 meV open on the s-band and the p-band, respectively, but both the gaps close at the bulk transition temperature, providing a definitive experimental evidence for the two-band superconductivity in MgB2. The experiments validate the role of k-dependent electron-phonon coupling as the origin of multiple-gap superconductivity in MgB2.

Atomic correlations in itinerant ferromagnets: quasi-particle bands of nickel

We measure the band structure of nickel along various high-symmetry lines of the bulk Brillouin zone with angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. The Gutzwiller theory for a nine-band Hubbard model whose tight-binding parameters are obtained from non-magnetic density-functional theory resolves most of the long-standing discrepancies between experiment and theory on nickel. Thereby we support the view of itinerant ferromagnetism as induced by atomic correlations.

Electron-phonon coupling induced pseudogap and the superconducting transition in Ba0.67K0.33BiO3

We study the single particle density of states (DOS) across the superconducting transition (Tc = 31 K) in single-crystal Ba0.67K0.33BiO3 using ultrahigh resolution angle-integrated photoemission spectroscopy. The superconducting gap opens with a pile-up in the DOS, Delta(5.3 K) = 5.2 meV and 2Delta(0)/kBTc = 3.9. In addition, we observe a pseudogap below and above Tc, occurring as a suppression in intensity over an energy scale up to the breathing mode phonon(~ 70 meV). The results indicate electron-phonon coupling induces a pseudogap in Ba0.67K0.33BiO3.

Direct evidence for a multiple superconducting gap in MgB2 from high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy

We study the new binary intermetallic superconductor MgB2 using high-resolution photo-emission spectroscopy. The superconducting-state spectrum measured at 5.4 K shows a coherent peak with a shoulder structure, in sharp contrast to that expected from a simple isotropic-gap opening. The spectrum can be well reproduced using the weighted sum of two Dynes functions with the gap sizes of 1.7 and 5.6 meV. Temperature-dependent study shows that both gaps close at the bulk transition temperature. These results provide spectroscopic evidence for a multiple gap of MgB2.
