Self-Sustained Non-Equilibrium Co-existence of Fluid and Solid States in a Strongly Coupled Complex Plasma System

A complex (dusty) plasma system is well known as a paradigmatic model for studying the kinetics of solid-liquid phase transitions in inactive condensed matter. At the same time, under certain conditions a complex plasma system can also display characteristics of an active medium with the micron-sized particles converting energy of the ambient environment into motility and thereby becoming active. We present a detailed analysis of the experimental complex plasmas system that shows evidence of a non-equilibrium stationary coexistence between a cold crystalline and a hot fluid state in the structure due to the conversion of plasma energy into the motion energy of microparticles in the central region of the system. The plasma mediated non-reciprocal interaction between the dust particles is the underlying mechanism for the enormous heating of the central subsystem, and it acts as a micro-scale energy source that keeps the central subsystem in the molten state. Accurate multiscale simulations of the system based on combined molecular dynamics and particle-in-cell approaches show that strong structural nonuniformity of the system under the action of electostatic trap makes development of instabilities a local process. We present both experimental tests conducted with a complex plasmas system in a DC glow discharge plasma and a detailed theoretical analysis.

Few-shot bioacoustic event detection at the DCASE 2022 challenge

Few-shot sound event detection is the task of detecting sound events, despite having only a few labelled examples of the class of interest. This framework is particularly useful in bioacoustics, where often there is a need to annotate very long recordings but the expert annotator time is limited. This paper presents an overview of the second edition of the few-shot bioacoustic sound event detection task included in the DCASE 2022 challenge. A detailed description of the task objectives, dataset, and baselines is presented, together with the main results obtained and characteristics of the submitted systems. This task received submissions from 15 different teams from which 13 scored higher than the baselines. The highest F-score was of 60% on the evaluation set, which leads to a huge improvement over last year's edition. Highly-performing methods made use of prototypical networks, transductive learning, and addressed the variable length of events from all target classes. Furthermore, by analysing results on each of the subsets we can identify the main difficulties that the systems face, and conclude that few-show bioacoustic sound event detection remains an open challenge.

A Comprehensive Bayesian re-analysis of the SARAS2 data from the Epoch of Reionization

We present a Bayesian re-analysis of the sky-averaged 21-cm experimental data from SARAS2 using nested sampling implemented with polychord, spectrally smooth foreground modelling implemented with maxsmooth, detailed systematic modelling and rapid signal emulation with globalemu. Our analysis differs from previous analysis of the SARAS2 data through the use of a full Bayesian framework and separate modelling of the foreground and non-smooth systematics. We use the most up-to-date signal models including Lyman-$α$ and CMB heating parameterised by astrophysical parameters such as star formation efficiency, X-ray heating efficiency, minimal virial circular velocity of star forming galaxies, CMB optical depth and the low energy cutoff of the X-ray spectral energy distribution. We consider models with an excess radio background above the CMB produced via radio emission from early galaxies and parameterised by a radio production efficiency. A non-smooth systematic is identified and modelled as both a frequency damped sinusoid introduced by the electronics and separately from the sky. The latter is modulated by the total efficiency of the antenna and marginally favoured by the data. We consider three different models for the noise in the data. The SARAS2 constraints on individual astrophysical parameters are extremely weak however we identify classes of disfavoured signals. We weakly disfavour standard astrophysical models with high Lyman-$α$ fluxes and weak heating and more confidently disfavour exotic models with high Lyman-$α$ fluxes, low X-ray efficiencies and high radio production efficiencies in early galaxies.

New Horizons: Scalar and Vector Ultralight Dark Matter

The last decade has seen unprecedented effort in dark matter model building at all mass scales coupled with the design of numerous new detection strategies. Transformative advances in quantum technologies have led to a plethora of new high-precision quantum sensors and dark matter detection strategies for ultralight ($<10\,$eV) bosonic dark matter that can be described by an oscillating classical, largely coherent field. This white paper focuses on searches for wavelike scalar and vector dark matter candidates.

Contribution to understanding the phase structure of strong interaction matter: Lee-Yang edge singularities from lattice QCD

We present a calculation of the net baryon number density as a function of imaginary baryon number chemical potential, obtained with highly improved staggered quarks (HISQ) at temporal lattice extent of $N_τ=4,6$. We construct various rational function approximations of the lattice data and discuss how poles in the complex plane can be determined from them. We compare our results of the singularities in the chemical potential plane to the theoretically expected positions of the Lee-Yang edge singularity in the vicinity of the Roberge-Weiss and chiral phase transitions. We find a temperature scaling that is in accordance with the expected power law behavior.

Searching for Chameleon Dark Energy with Mechanical Systems

A light scalar field framework of dark energy, sometimes referred to as quintessence, introduces a fifth force between normal matter objects. Screening mechanisms, such as the chameleon model, allow the scalar field to be almost massless on cosmological scales while simultaneously evading laboratory constraints. We explore the ability of mechanical systems available in the near term to directly detect the fifth force associated with chameleon dark energy. We provide analytical expressions for the weakest accessible chameleon model parameters in terms of experimentally tunable variables and apply our analysis to two mechanical systems: levitated microspheres and torsion balances, showing that the current generation of these experiments have the sensitivity to rule out a significant portion of the proposed chameleon parameter space. We also indicate regions of theoretically well-motivated chameleon parameter space to guide future experimental work.

Crossover of the high-energy spin fluctuations from collective triplons to localized magnetic excitations in doped Sr14-xCaxCu24O41 cuprate ladders

We studied the magnetic excitations in the quasi-one-dimensional (q-1D) ladder subsystem of Sr_(14-x) Ca_x Cu_24 O_41(SCCO) using Cu L_3-edge resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS). By comparing momentum-resolved RIXS spectra with (x=12.2) and without (x=0) high Ca content, we track the evolution of the magnetic excitations from collective two-triplon (2T) excitations (x=0) to weakly-dispersive gapped modes at an energy of 280 meV (x=12.2). Density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations of the RIXS response in the doped ladders suggest that the flat magnetic dispersion and damped excitation profile observed at x=12.2 originates from enhanced hole localization. This interpretation is supported by polarization-dependent RIXS measurements, where we disentangle the spin-conserving ΔS=0 scattering from the predominant ΔS=1 spin-flip signal in the RIXS spectra. The results show that the low-energy weight in the ΔS=0 channel is depleted when Sr is replaced by Ca, consistent with a reduced carrier mobility. Our results demonstrate that off-ladder impurities can affect both the low-energy magnetic excitations and superconducting correlations in the CuO_4 plaquettes. Finally, our study characterizes the magnetic and charge fluctuations in the phase from which superconductivity emerges in SCCO at elevated pressures.

Total Controllability of nonlocal semilinear functional evolution equations with non-instantaneous impulses

In this article, we are discussing a more vital concept of controllability, termed total controllability. We have considered a nonlocal semilinear functional evolution equations with non-instantaneous impulses and finite delay in Hilbert spaces. A set of sufficient conditions of total controllability is obtained for the evolution system under consideration, by imposing the theory of C_0-semigroup and Banach fixed point theorem. We also established the total controllability results for a functional integro-differential equation. Finally, an example is given to demonstrate the feasibility of derived abstract results.

Lensing Without Borders. I. A Blind Comparison of the Amplitude of Galaxy-Galaxy Lensing Between Independent Imaging Surveys

Lensing Without Borders is a cross-survey collaboration created to assess the consistency of galaxy-galaxy lensing signals ($ΔΣ$) across different data-sets and to carry out end-to-end tests of systematic errors. We perform a blind comparison of the amplitude of $ΔΣ$ using lens samples from BOSS and six independent lensing surveys. We find good agreement between empirically estimated and reported systematic errors which agree to better than 2.3$σ$ in four lens bins and three radial ranges. For lenses with $z_{\rm L}>0.43$ and considering statistical errors, we detect a 3-4$σ$ correlation between lensing amplitude and survey depth. This correlation could arise from the increasing impact at higher redshift of unrecognised galaxy blends on shear calibration and imperfections in photometric redshift calibration. At $z_{\rm L}>0.54$ amplitudes may additionally correlate with foreground stellar density. The amplitude of these trends is within survey-defined systematic error budgets which are designed to include known shear and redshift calibration uncertainty. Using a fully empirical and conservative method, we do not find evidence for large unknown systematics. Systematic errors greater than 15% (25%) ruled out in three lens bins at 68% (95%) confidence at $z<0.54$. Differences with respect to predictions based on clustering are observed to be at the 20-30% level. Our results therefore suggest that lensing systematics alone are unlikely to fully explain the "lensing is low" effect at $z<0.54$. This analysis demonstrates the power of cross-survey comparisons and provides a promising path for identifying and reducing systematics in future lensing analyses.

Numerical Simulation of Superparamagnetic Nanoparticle Motion in Blood Vessels for Magnetic Drug Delivery

A numerical model is developed for the motion of superparamagnetic nanoparticles in a non-Newtonian blood flow under the influence of a magnetic field. The rheological properties of blood are modeled by the Carreau flow and viscosity, and the stochastic effects of Brownian motion and red blood cell collisions are considered. The model is validated with existing data and good agreement with experimental results is shown. The effectiveness of magnetic drug delivery in various blood vessels is assessed and found to be most successful in arterioles and capillaries. A range of magnetic field strengths are modeled using equations for both a bar magnet and a point dipole: it is shown that the bar magnet is effective at capturing nanoparticles in limited cases while the point dipole is highly effective across a range of conditions. A parameter study is conducted to show the effects of changing the dipole moment, the distance from the magnet to the blood vessel, and the initial release point of the nanoparticles. The distance from the magnet to the blood vessel is shown to play a significant role in determining nanoparticle capture rate. The optimal initial release position is found to be located within the tumor radius in capillaries and arterioles to prevent rapid diffusion to the edges of the blood vessel prior to arriving at the tumor, and near the edge of the magnet when a bar magnet is used.

Thermal evolution of nanocrystalline co-sputtered Ni-Zr alloy films: Structural, magnetic and MD simulation studies

Monophasic and homogeneous Ni10Zr7 nanocrystalline alloy films were successfully grown at room temperature by co-sputtering in an indigenously developed three-gun DC/RF magnetron sputtering unit. The films could be produced with long-range crystallographic and chemical order in the alloy, thus overcoming the widely acknowledged inherent proclivity of the glass forming Ni-Zr couple towards amorphization. Crystallinity of these alloys is a desirable feature with regard to improved efficacy in applications such as hydrogen storage, catalytic activity and nuclear reactor engineering, to name a few. Thermal stability of this crystalline phase, being vital for transition to viable applications, was investigated through systematic annealing of the alloy films at 473 K, 673 K and 923 K for various durations. While the films were stable at 473 K, the effect of annealing at 673 K was to create segregation into nanocrystalline Ni (superparamagnetic) and amorphous Ni+Zr (non-magnetic) phases. Detailed analyses of the physical and magnetic structures before and after annealing were performed through several techniques effectual in analyzing stratified configurations and the findings were all consistent with each other. Polarized neutron and X-ray reflectometry, grazing incidence x-ray diffraction, time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to gauge phase separation at nanometer length scales. SQUID based magnetometry was used to investigate macroscopic magnetic properties. Simulated annealing performed on this system using molecular dynamic calculations corroborated well with the experimental results. This study provides a thorough understanding of the creation and thermal evolution of a crystalline Ni-Zr alloy.

Structure-property relations characterizing the devitrification of Ni-Zr glassy alloy thin films

The investigation of devitrification in thermally annealed nanodimensional glassy alloy thin films provides a comprehensive understanding of their thermal stability, which can be used to explore potential applications. The amorphous to crystalline polymorphous transformation of cosputtered NiZr alloy (Ni78Zr22 at%) films, with a thickness lower than the reported critical limit of devitrification, was studied through detailed structural characterization and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Devitrification to a nanocrystalline state (Ni7Zr2 structure) was observed at 800 degC, with an increase in density (approx 3.6%) much higher than that achieved in bulk alloys. Variation in the magnetic property of the films and the overall physical structure including morphology and composition were examined before and after annealing. MD simulations were employed to effectively elucidate not only the high densification but also the increased magnetic moment after annealing, which was correlated with the simulated change in the coordination number around Ni atoms. The structural relaxation process accompanying devitrification was described as a disorder-to-order transformation while highlighting the crucial role played by chemical short range order prevalent in glassy materials.

Geometric ZWEIER Convergent Lacunary Sequence Spaces

The main purpose of this paper is to introduce lacunary strong geometric zweier convergent sequence spaces $N_{θ}^{0} \left[Z\left(G\right)\right]$, $N_{θ} \left[Z\left(G\right)\right]$, $N_{θ}^{\infty } \left[Z\left(G\right)\right]$consisting of all sequences $x=\left(x_{k} \right)$such that $\left[Z\left(G\right)\right]x$ are in the spaces $N_{θ}^{0} ,N_{θ} {\rm and\; }N_{θ}^{\infty } $ respectively, which are normed. We prove certain topological properties of these spaces and compute their lacunary stastical zweier convergence.

Magnetic phase diagram, magnetoelastic coupling and Grüneisen scaling in CoTiO$_3$

High-quality single crystals of CoTiO$_3$ are grown and used to elucidate in detail structural and magnetostructural effects by means of high-resolution capacitance dilatometry studies in fields up to 15 T which are complemented by specific heat and magnetization measurements. In addition, we refine the single-crystal structure of the ilmenite ($R\bar{3}$) phase. At the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature $T_\mathrm{N}$, pronounced $λ$-shaped anomaly in the thermal expansion coefficients signals shrinking of both the $c$ and $b$ axes, indicating strong magnetoelastic coupling with uniaxial pressure along $c$ yielding six times larger effect on $T_\mathrm{N}$ than the pressure applied in-plane. The hydrostatic pressure dependency derived by means of Grüneisen analysis amounts to $\partial T_\mathrm{N}/ \partial p\approx 2.7(4)$~K/GPa. The high-field magnetization studies in static and pulsed magnetic fields up to 60~T along with high-field thermal expansion measurements facilitate in constructing the complete anisotropic magnetic phase diagram of CoTiO$_3$. While the results confirm the presence of significant magnetodielectric coupling, our data show that magnetism drives the observed structural, dielectric, and magnetic changes both in the short-range ordered regime well-above $T_\mathrm{N}$ as well as in the long-range magnetically ordered phase.

Prototype Superfluid Gravitational Wave Detector

We study a cross-shaped cavity filled with superfluid $^4$He as a prototype resonant-mass gravitational wave detector. Using a membrane and a re-entrant microwave cavity as a sensitive optomechanical transducer, we were able to observe the thermally excited high-$Q$ acoustic modes of the helium at 20 mK temperature and achieved a strain sensitivity of $8 \times 10^{-19}$ Hz$^{-1/2}$ to gravitational waves. To facilitate the broadband detection of continuous gravitational waves, we tune the kilohertz-scale mechanical resonance frequencies up to 173 Hz/bar by pressurizing the helium. With reasonable improvements, this architecture will enable the search for GWs in the 1-30 kHz range, relevant for a number of astrophysical sources both within and beyond the Standard Model.

Cryogenic single-port calibration for superconducting microwave resonator measurements

Superconducting circuit testing and materials loss characterization requires robust and reliable methods for the extraction of internal and coupling quality factors of microwave resonators. A common method, imposed by limitations on the device design or experimental configuration, is the single-port reflection geometry, i.e. reflection-mode. However, impedance mismatches in cryogenic systems must be accounted for through calibration of the measurement chain while it is at low temperatures. In this paper, we demonstrate a data-based, single-port calibration using commercial microwave standards and a vector network analyzer (VNA) with samples at millikelvin temperature in a dilution refrigerator, making this method useful for measurements of quantum phenomena. Finally, we cross reference our data-based, single-port calibration and reflection measurement with over-coupled 2D- and 3D-resonators against well established two-port techniques corroborating the validity of our method.

Net-baryon number fluctuations

The appearance of large, none-Gaussian cumulants of the baryon number distribution is commonly discussed as a signal for the QCD critical point. We review the status of the Taylor expansion of cumulant ratios of baryon number fluctuations along the freeze-out line and also compare QCD results with the corresponding proton number fluctuations as measured by the STAR Collaboration at RHIC. To further constrain the location of a possible QCD critical point we discuss poles of the baryon number fluctuations in the complex plane. Here we use not only the Taylor coefficients obtained at zero chemical potential but perform also calculations of Taylor expansion coefficients of the pressure at purely imaginary chemical potentials.
