INTEGRAL observation of the high-mass X-ray transient V0332+53 during the 2005 outburst decline

The decline of the high mass X-ray transient V0332+53 during the Dec. 2004 to Feb. 2005 outburst is analysed from the data recorded by INTEGRAL. The flux is shown to decrease exponentially until 2005 Feb. 10, with a decay time scale of \~30 days above 20 keV and ~20 days at lower energies, and to decrease linearly thereafter. The energy spectrum is well modelled throughout the decay by a power law with a folding energy of ~7.5 keV, and with two cyclotron absorption features. The folding energy does not vary significantly over the decay, but the spectrum becomes harder with time. Most importantly, we show that the parameters describing the fundamental cyclotron line around 27 keV do vary with time: its energy and depth increase (by about 17% for the energy in ~6 weeks), while its width decreases. These changes of the cyclotron line parameters are interpreted as resulting from a change in the extent of the cyclotron scattering region. Two quasi-periodic oscillations are also observed at various times during the observations, one at 0.05 Hz and another one near the pulsation frequency around 0.23 Hz.

Results from the First INTEGRAL AGN Catalogue

We present results based on the first INTEGRAL AGN catalogue. The catalogue includes 42 AGN, of which 10 are Seyfert 1, 17 are Seyfert 2, and 9 are intermediate Seyfert 1.5. The fraction of blazars is rather small with 5 detected objects, and only one galaxy cluster and no star-burst galaxies have been detected so far. The sample consists of bright (fx > 5e-12 erg/cm**2/s), low luminosity (L = 2e43 erg/s), local (z = 0.020) AGN. Although the sample is not flux limited, we find a ratio of obscured to unobscured AGN of 1.5 - 2.0, consistent with luminosity dependent unified models for AGN. Only four Compton-thick AGN are found in the sample. This implies that the missing Compton-thick AGN needed to explain the cosmic hard X-ray background would have to have lower fluxes than discovered by INTEGRAL so far.

The First INTEGRAL AGN Catalog

We present the first INTEGRAL AGN catalog, based on observations performed from launch of the mission in October 2002 until January 2004. The catalog includes 42 AGN, of which 10 are Seyfert 1, 17 are Seyfert 2, and 9 are intermediate Seyfert 1.5. The fraction of blazars is rather small with 5 detected objects, and only one galaxy cluster and no star-burst galaxies have been detected so far. A complete subset consists of 32 AGN with a significance limit of 7 sigma in the INTEGRAL/ISGRI 20-40 keV data. Although the sample is not flux limited, the distribution of sources shows a ratio of obscured to unobscured AGN of 1.5 - 2.0, consistent with luminosity dependent unified models for AGN. Only four Compton-thick AGN are found in the sample. Based on the INTEGRAL data presented here, the Seyfert 2 spectra are slightly harder (Gamma = 1.95 +- 0.01) than Seyfert 1.5 (Gamma = 2.10 +- 0.02) and Seyfert 1 (Gamma = 2.11 +- 0.05).

INTEGRAL observations of AGN in the Galactic Plane

We present results on approximately one year of INTEGRAL observations of six AGN detected during the regular scans of the Galactic Plane. The sample is composed by five Seyfert 2 objects (MCG -05-23-16, NGC 4945, the Circinus galaxy, NGC 6300, ESO 103-G35) and the radio galaxy Centaurus A. The continuum emission of each of these sources is well represented by a highly absorbed (NH > 1e22 1/cm^2) power law, with average spectral index Gamma = 1.9 +/- 0.3. A high energy exponential cut-off at Ec ~ 50 keV is required to fit the spectrum of the Circinus galaxy, whereas a lower limit of 130 keV has been found for NGC 4945 and no cut-off has been detected for NGC 6300 in the energy range covered by these INTEGRAL data. The flux of Centaurus A was found to vary by a factor of ~ 2 in 10 months, showing a spectral change between the high and low state, which can be modelled equally well by a change in the absorption (NH from 17e22 to 33e22 1/cm^2) or by the presence of a cut-off at >~ 120 keV in the low state spectrum. A comparison with recently reprocessed BeppoSAX/PDS data shows a general agreement with INTEGRAL results. The high energy cut-off in the hard X-ray spectra appears to be a common but not universal characteristic of Seyfert 2 and to span a wide range of energies.

The High Energy Spectrum of NGC 4151

We present the first INTEGRAL observations of the type 1.5 Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151. Combining several INTEGRAL observations performed during 2003, totaling about 400 ks of exposure time, allows us to study the spectrum in the 2 - 300 keV range. The measurements presented here reveal an overall spectrum from X-rays up to soft gamma-rays that can be described by an absorbed (NH = 6.9e22 1/cm**2) model based on a Compton continuum from a hot electron population (kT = 94 keV) from an optically thick (tau = 1.3) corona, reflected on cold material (R=0.7), consistent with earlier claims. The time resolved analysis shows little variation of the spectral parameters over the duration of the INTEGRAL observations. The comparison with CGRO/OSSE data shows that the same spectral model can be applied over a time span of 15 years, with flux variations of the order of a factor of 2 and changes in the underlying continuum reflected by the temperature of the electron population (kT = 50 - 100 keV). When modeled with an exponentially cut-off power law plus Compton reflection this results in photon indices ranging from Gamma = 1.5 to Gamma = 1.9 and a cut-off energy in the range 100 - 500 keV.

Swift, INTEGRAL, RXTE, and Spitzer reveal IGR J16283-4838

We present the first combined study of the recently discovered source IGR J16283-4838 with Swift, INTEGRAL, and RXTE. The source, discovered by INTEGRAL on April 7, 2005, shows a highly absorbed (variable N_H = 0.4 - 1.7 x 1e23 1/cm**2) and flat (photon index = 1) spectrum in the Swift/XRT and RXTE/PCA data. No optical counterpart is detectable (V > 20 mag), but a possible infrared counterpart within the Swift/XRT error radius is detected in the 2MASS and Spitzer/GLIMPSE survey. The observations suggest that IGR J16283-4838 is a high mass X-ray binary containing a neutron star embedded in Compton thick material. This makes IGR J16283-4838 a member of the class of highly absorbed HMXBs, discovered by INTEGRAL.

INTEGRAL observations of V0332+53 in outburst

We present the analysis of a 100ksec Integral(3-100kev) observation of the transient X-ray pulsar V0332+53 inoutburst. The source is pulsating at P=4.3751+/-0.0002s with a clear double pulse from 6 kev to 60 kev. The average flux was ~550mCrab between 20 kev and 60 kev. We modeled the broad band continuum from 5 kev to 100 kev with a power-law modified by an exponential cut off. We observe three cyclotron lines: the fundamental line at 24.9+/-0.1 kev, the first harmonic at 50.5+/-0.1 kev as well as the second harmonic at71.7+/-0.8 kev, thus confirming the discovery of the harmonic lines by Coburn et al. (2005) in RXTE data.

The Duty-cycle of Gamma-ray Blazars: a New Approach, New Results

We study several properties of blazars detected in the gamma-ray energy range by comparing the EGRET sources with a sample of radio blazars which can be considered possible gamma-ray candidates. We define three classes: non-gamma-ray blazars, blazars with quasi-steady gamma-ray emission, and gamma-ray blazars with substantial activity level. By combining the information of detected and candidate AGNs, we characterise the blazar activity, including the discovery of a region of consistency between the gamma-ray flaring duty-cycle and the recurrence time between flares. We also find a possible relation between the activity index of FSRQs and their black hole mass.
