How to measure the Bogoliubov quasiparticle amplitudes in a trapped condensate

We propose an experiment, based on two consecutive Bragg pulses, to measure the momentum distribution of quasiparticle excitations in a trapped Bose gas at low temperature. With the first pulse one generates a bunch of excitations carrying momentum $q$, whose Doppler line is measured by the second pulse. We show that this experiment can provide direct access to the amplitudes $u_{q}$ and $v_{q}$ characterizing the Bogoliubov transformations from particles to quasiparticles. We simulate the behavior of the nonuniform gas by numerically solving the time dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation.

Adiabatic compression of a trapped Fermi gas

We propose a method to reach conditions of high degeneracy in a trapped Fermi gas, based on the adiabatic transfer of atoms from a magnetic to a tighter optical trap. The transformation yields a large increase of the Fermi energy, without a significant change of the temperature. The large enhancement of the central density emphasizes the role of the interactions and makes the system much closer to the BCS transition. An estimate of the time needed to achieve the conditions of adiabaticity is also given.

Kinetic energy of a trapped Fermi gas interacting with a Bose-Einstein condensate

We study a confined mixture of bosons and fermions in the regime of quantal degeneracy, with particular attention to the effects of the interactions on the kinetic energy of the fermionic component. We are able to explore a wide region of system parameters by identifying two scaling variables which completely determine its state at low temperature. These are the ratio of the boson-fermion and boson-boson interaction strengths and the ratio of the radii of the two clouds. We find that the effect of the interactions can be sizeable for reasonable choices of the parameters and that its experimental study can be used to infer the sign of the boson-fermion scattering length. The interplay between interactions and thermal effects in the fermionic kinetic energy is also discussed.

Dynamic structure factor and momentum distribution of a trapped Bose gas

The dynamic structure factor of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensed gas is investigated at zero temperature in the framework of Bogoliubov theory. Different values of momentum transfer are considered, ranging from the phonon to the single-particle regime. Various approximated schemes are discussed, including the local density approximation, where the system is locally described as a uniform gas, and the impulse approximation, where the response is fixed by the momentum distribution of the condensate. A comprehensive approach, based on the eikonal expansion, is presented. The predictions of theory are successfully compared with the results of recent two-photon Bragg scattering experiments, both at low and high momentum transfer. Relevant features of the dynamic structure factor are also discussed using the formalism of sum rules and the concept of scaling. Particular emphasis is given to the regime of high momentum transfer, where the dynamic structure factor is sensitive to the behaviour of the order parameter in momentum space, and some instructive examples showing the consequence of long-range coherence are presented.

Scissors mode and superfluidity of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensed gas

We investigate the oscillation of a dilute atomic gas generated by a sudden rotation of the confining trap (scissors mode). This oscillation reveals the effects of superfluidity exhibited by a Bose-Einstein condensate. The scissors mode is investigated also in a classical gas above T_c in various collisional regimes. The crucial difference with respect to the superfluid case arises from the occurence of low frequency components, which are responsible for the rigid value of the moment of inertia. Different experimental procedures to excite the scissors mode are discussed.

Interference of Bose-Einstein condensates in momentum space

We suggest an experiment to investigate the linear superposition of two spatially separated Bose-Einstein condensates. Due to the coherent combination of the two wave functions, the dynamic structure factor, measurable through inelastic photon scattering at high momentum transfer $q$, is predicted to exhibit interference fringes with frequency period $Δν= q/md$ where $d$ is the distance between the condensates. We show that the coherent configuration corresponds to an eigenstate of the physical observable measured in the experiment and that the relative phase of the condensates is hence created through the measurement process.

Collective oscillations of an interacting trapped Fermi gas

We calculate the effects of two-body interactions on the low frequency oscillations of a normal Fermi gas confined in a harmonic trap. The mean field contribution to the collective frequencies is evaluated in the collisionless regime using a sum rule approach. We also discuss the transition between the collisionless and hydrodynamic regime with special emphasis to the spin dipole mode in which two atomic clouds occupying different spin states oscillate in opposite phase. The spin dipole mode is predicted to be overdamped in the hydrodynamic regime. The relaxation time is calculated as a function of temperature and the effects of Fermi statistics are explicitly pointed out.

Collective oscillations of a classical gas confined in harmonic traps

Starting from the Boltzmann equation we calculate the frequency and the damping of the monopole and quadrupole oscillations of a classical gas confined in an harmonic potential. The collisional term is treated in the relaxation time approximation and a gaussian ansatz is used for its evaluation. Our approach provides an explicit description of the transition between the hydrodynamic and collisionless regimes in both spherical and deformed traps. The predictions are compared with the results of a numerical simulation.

Phase diagram of quantized vortices in a trapped Bose-Einstein condensed gas

We investigate the thermodynamic stability of quantized vortices in a dilute Bose gas confined by a rotating harmonic trap at finite temperature. Interatomic forces play a crucial role in characterizing the resulting phase diagram, especially in the large $N$ Thomas-Fermi regime. We show that the critical temperature for the creation of stable vortices exhibits a maximum as a function of the frequency of the rotating trap and that the corresponding transition is associated with a discontinuity in the number of atoms in the condensate. Possible strategies for approaching the vortical region are discussed.

Temperature-dependent density profiles of trapped boson-fermion mixtures

We present a semiclassical three-fluid model for a Bose-condensed mixture of interacting Bose and Fermi gases confined in harmonic traps at finite temperature. The model is used to characterize the experimentally relevant behaviour of the equilibrium density profile of the fermions with varying composition and temperature across the onset of degeneracy, for coupling strengths relevant to a mixture of $^{39}$K and $^{40}$K atoms.

Theory of Bose-Einstein condensation in trapped gases

The phenomenon of Bose-Einstein condensation of dilute gases in traps is reviewed from a theoretical perspective. Mean-field theory provides a framework to understand the main features of the condensation and the role of interactions between particles. Various properties of these systems are discussed, including the density profiles and the energy of the ground state configurations, the collective oscillations and the dynamics of the expansion, the condensate fraction and the thermodynamic functions. The thermodynamic limit exhibits a scaling behavior in the relevant length and energy scales. Despite the dilute nature of the gases, interactions profoundly modify the static as well as the dynamic properties of the system; the predictions of mean-field theory are in excellent agreement with available experimental results. Effects of superfluidity including the existence of quantized vortices and the reduction of the moment of inertia are discussed, as well as the consequences of coherence such as the Josephson effect and interference phenomena. The review also assesses the accuracy and limitations of the mean-field approach.

Quantum degeneracy and interaction effects in spin-polarized Fermi-Bose mixtures

Various features of spin-polarized Fermi gases confined in harmonic traps are discussed, taking into account possible perspectives of experimental measurements. The mechanism of the expansion of the gas is explicitly investigated and compared with the one of an interacting Bose gas. The role of interactions on the equilibrium and non equilibrium behaviour of the fermionic component in Fermi-Bose mixtures is discussed. Special emphasis is given to the case of potassium isotopes mixtures.

Elementary excitations in trapped Bose gases beyond mean field approximation

Using hydrodynamic theory of superfluids and the Lee-Huang-Yang equation of state for interacting Bose gases we derive the first correction to the collective frequencies of a trapped gas, due to effects beyond mean field approximation. The corresponding frequency shift, which is calculated at zero temperature and for large N, is compared with other corrections due to finite size, non-linearity and finite temperature. We show that for reasonable choices of the relevant parameters of the system, the non-mean field correction is the leading contribution and amounts to about 1%. The role of the deformation of the trap is also discussed.

Dynamical response of a Bose-Einstein condensate to a discontinuous change in internal state

A two-photon transition is used to convert an arbitrary fraction of the 87Rb atoms in a |F=1,m_f=-1> condensate to the |F=2,m_f=1> state. Transferring the entire population imposes a discontinuous change on the condensate's mean-field repulsion, which leaves a residual ringing in the condensate width. A calculation based on Gross-Pitaevskii theory agrees well with the observed behavior, and from the comparison we obtain the ratio of the intraspecies scattering lengths for the two states, a_|1,-1> / a_|2,1> = 1.062(12).

Dynamics of Bose condensed gases in highly deformed traps

We provide a unified investigation of normal modes and sound propagation at zero temperature in Bose condensed gases confined in highly asymmetric harmonic traps and interacting with repulsive forces. By using hydrodynamic theory for superfluids we obtain explicit analytic results for the dispersion law of the low energy discretized modes for both cigar and disk shaped geometries, including the regime of large quantum numbers where discrete modes can be identified with phonons. The correspondence with sound propagation in cylindrical traps and the one-dimensional nature of cigar type configurations are explicitly discussed.

Anomalous fluctuations of the condensate in interacting Bose gases

We find that the fluctuations of the condensate in a weakly interacting Bose gas confined in a box of volume $V$ follow the law $<δN_0^2>\sim V^{4/3}$. This anomalous behaviour arises from the occurrence of infrared divergencies due to phonon excitations and holds also for strongly correlated Bose superfluids. The analysis is extended to an interacting Bose gas confined in a harmonic trap where the fluctuations are found to exhibit a similar anomaly.

Landau damping in dilute Bose gases

Landau damping in weakly interacting Bose gases is investigated by means of perturbation theory. Our approach points out the crucial role played by Bose-Einstein condensation and yields an explicit expression for the decay rate of elementary excitations in both uniform and non uniform gases. Systematic results are derived for the phonon width in homogeneous gases interacting with repulsive forces. Special attention is given to the low and high temperature regimes.

Collective and single particle excitations of a trapped Bose gas

The density of states of a Bose-condensed gas confined in a harmonic trap is investigated. The predictions of Bogoliubov theory are compared with the ones of Hartree-Fock theory and of the hydrodynamic model. We show that the Hartree-Fock scheme provides an excellent description of the excitation spectrum in a wide range of energy, revealing a major role played by single-particle excitations in these confined systems. The crossover from the hydrodynamic regime, holding at low energies, to the independent particle regime is explicitly explored by studying the frequency of the surface mode as a function of their angular momentum. The applicability of the semiclassical approximation for the excited states is also discussed. We show that the semiclassical approach provides simple and accurate formulae for the density of states and the quantum depletion of the condensate.
