Strain-induced enhancement of the electron energy relaxation in strongly correlated superconductors

We use femtosecond optical spectroscopy to systematically measure the primary energy relaxation rate k1 of photoexcited carriers in cuprate and pnictide superconductors. We find that k1 increases monotonically with increased negative strain in the crystallographic a-axis. Generally, the Bardeen-Shockley deformation potential theorem and, specifically, pressure-induced Raman shifts reported in the literature suggest that increased negative strain enhances electron-phonon coupling, which implies that the observed direct correspondence between a and k1 is consistent with the canonical assignment of k1 to the electron-phonon interaction. The well-known non-monotonic dependence of the superconducting critical temperature Tc on the a-axis strain is also reflected in a systematic dependence Tc on k1, with a distinct maximum at intermediate values (~16 ps-1 at room temperature). The empirical non-monotonic systematic variation of Tc with the strength of the electron-phonon interaction provides us with unique insight into the role of electron-phonon interaction in relation to the mechanism of high-Tc superconductivity as a crossover phenomenon.

Superconducting pairing and the pseudogap in nematic striped La2-xSrxCuO4

The individual k\parallel and k\perp stripe excitations in fluctuating spin-charge stripes have not been observed yet. In Raman scattering if we set, for example, incident and scattered light polarizations to two possible stripe directions, we can observe the fluctuating stripe as if it is static. Using the different symmetry selection rule between the B1g two-magnon scattering and the B1g and B2g isotropic electronic scattering, we succeeded to obtain the k\parallel and k\perp strip magnetic excitations separately in La2-xSrxCuO4. Only the k\perp stripe excitations appear in the wide-energy isotropic electronic Raman scattering, indicating that the charge transfer is restricted to the direction perpendicular to the stripe. This is the same as the Burgers vector of an edge dislocation which easily slides perpendicularly to the stripe. Hence charges at the edge dislocation move together with the dislocation perpendicularly to the stripe, while other charges are localized. A looped edge dislocation has lower energy than a single edge dislocation. The superconducting coherence length is close to the inter-charge stripe distance at x \le 0.2. Therefore we conclude that Cooper pairs are formed at looped edge dislocations. The restricted charge transfer direction naturally explains the opening of a pseudogap around (0, π) for the stripe parallel to the b axis and the reconstruction of the Fermi surface to have a flat plane near (0, π). They break the four-fold rotational symmetry. Furthermore the systematic experiments revealed the carrier density dependence of the isotropic and anisotropic electronic excitations, the spin density wave and/or charge density wave gap near (π/2, π/2), and the strong coupling between the electronic states near (π/2, π/2) and the zone boundary phonons at (π, π).

Raman Studies of Anisotropic Magnetic Excitations in Fluctuating Nematic Striped La2-xSrxCuO4 and the Comparison to Uniform Nd2-xCexCuO4

The mechanism of the high temperature hole-doped superconductivity was investigated by Raman scattering. The Raman selection rule is unique, so that anisotropic magnetic excitations in a fluctuating spin-charge stripe can be detected as if it is static. We use different Raman selection rules for two kinds of magnetic Raman scattering processes, two-magnon scattering and high-energy electronic scattering. In order to confirm the difference, the Raman spectra of striped La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO) and non-striped Nd2-xCexCuO4 (NCCO) were compared. The main results in LSCO are (1) magnetic excitations are presented by individual energy dispersions for the k\parallel stripe and the k\perp stripe, (2) the charge transfer is allowed only in the direction perpendicular to the stripe. The direction is the same as the Burgers vector of an edge dislocation. Hence we assume that a charge moves together with the edge dislocation of the charge stripe. The superconducting coherence length is close to the inter-charge stripe distance at x < 0.2. Therefore we propose a model that superconducting pairs are formed in the edge dislocations. The binding energy is related to the stripe formation energy.

Phonon, Two-Magnon and Electronic Raman Scattering of Fe1+yTe1-xSex

We have measured Raman scattering spectra of single-crystalline FeTe0.6Se0.4 (T_c ~ 14.5 K) and its parent compound Fe1.074Te at various temperatures. In the parent compound Fe1.074Te, A1g and B1g modes have been observed at 157.5 and 202.3 cm-1, respectively, at 5 K. These frequencies qualitatively agree with the calculated results. Two-magnon excitation has been observed around 2300 cm-1 for both compounds. Temperature dependence between the electronic Raman spectra below and above T_c has been observed and 2Δand 2Δ/k_BT_C have been estimated as 5.0 meV and 4.0, respectively.

Magnetic and Electronic Raman Scattering at the Nodal Spin-Density-Wave Transition in BaFe2As2

Two magnon excitations and the nodal spin density wave (SDW) gap were observed in BaFe2As2 by Raman scattering. Below the SDW transition temperature (TSDW) nodal SDW gap opens together with new excitations in reconstructed electronic states. The two-magnon peak remains above TSDW and moreover the energy increases a little. The change from the long-range ordered state to the short-range correlated state is compared to the cuprate superconductors.

Controlled vaporization of the superconducting condensate in cuprate superconductors sheds light on the pairing boson

We use ultrashort intense laser pulses to study superconducting state vaporization dynamics in La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO4 (x=0.1 and 0.15) on the femtosecond timescale. We find that the energy density required to vaporize the superconducting state is 2+- 0.8 K/Cu and 2.6 +- 1 K/Cu for x=0.1 and 0.15 respectively. This is significantly greater than the condensation energy density, indicating that the quasiparticles share a large amount of energy with the boson glue bath on this timescale. Considering in detail both spin and lattice energy relaxation pathways which take place on the relevant timescale of picoseconds, we rule out purely spin-mediated pair-breaking in favor of phonon-mediated mechanisms, effectively ruling out spin-mediated pairing in cuprates as a consequence.

Electron Correlation Driven Heavy-Fermion Formation in LiV2O4

Optical reflectivity measurements were performed on a single crystal of the d-electron heavy-fermion (HF) metal LiV2O4. The results evidence the highly incoherent character of the charge dynamics for all temperatures above T^* \approx 20 K. The spectral weight of the optical conductivity is redistributed over extremely broad energy scales (~ 5 eV) as the quantum coherence of the charge carriers is recovered. This wide redistribution is, in sharp contrast to f-electron Kondo lattice HF systems, characteristic of a metallic system close to a correlation driven insulating state. Our results thus reveal that strong electronic correlation effects dominate the low-energy charge dynamics and heavy quasiparticle formation in LiV2O4. We propose the geometrical frustration, which limits the extension of charge and spin ordering, as an additional key ingredient of the low-temperature heavy-fermion formation in this system.

Role of electron-electron and electron-phonon interaction effect in the optical conductivity of VO2

We have investigated the charge dynamics of VO2 by optical reflectivity measurements. Optical conductivity clearly shows a metal-insulator transition. In the metallic phase, a broad Drude-like structure is observed. On the other hand, in the insulating phase, a broad peak structure around 1.3 eV is observed. It is found that this broad structure observed in the insulating phase shows a temperature dependence. We attribute this to the electron-phonon interaction as in the photoemission spectra.

Anisotropic charge transfer mechanism in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ and Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_{1-x}$Y$_x$Cu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$

Raman spectra of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ are similar to those of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ except for the split two-magnon peaks at the stripe phase and the stronger step-like decrease in the low energy $B_{\rm 2g}$ spectra. The suppressed $B_{\rm 1g}$ spectral region below the two-magnon peak decreases as the carrier density increases, whereas the energy of the step-like suppression is little dependent on the carrier density. It suggests the anisotropic charge transfer mechanism coupled with magnetic excitations along the nearest neighbor Cu sites and the phononic excitations along the diagonal direction.

Dynamical stripe structure in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ observed by Raman scattering

The dynamical stripe structure relating to the "1/8 problem" was investigated in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ utilizing the high frequency response of Raman scattering. The split of the two-magnon peak due to the formation of the stripe structure was observed at whole Sr concentration region from $x=0.035$ to 0.25 at low temperatures. Especially clear split was observed at low carrier concentration region $x=0.035 - 0.06$ and at $x \sim 1/8$. The onset temperatures of these stripe structures are as high as 300-350 K, which are much higher than the temperatures measured by slow response probes.

Difference between the cleaved surface and the polished surface on the Raman spectra of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$

The Raman spectra on the cleaved surface of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ is found to be different from those on the mechanically polished or chemically etched surface. On the cleaved surface, the step-like increase of the scattering intensity below 700 cm$^{-1}$ is washed away and the two-phonon peaks are preserved clearly even at the optimum doping. The difference is demonstrated on the optimally doped crystal at x=0.15 and the stripe phase crystal at x=0.115. The stripe phase is stabilized by defects induced by mechanical polishing.

Relation between the superconducting gap energy and the two-magnon Raman peak energy in Bi2Sr2Ca{1-x}YxCu2O{8+δ}

The relation between the electronic excitation and the magnetic excitation for the superconductivity in Bi2Sr2Ca{1-x}YxCu2O{8+δ} was investigated by wide-energy Raman spectroscopy. In the underdoping region the B1g scattering intensity is depleted below the two-magnon peak energy due to the "hot spots" effects. The depleted region decreases according to the decrease of the two-magnon peak energy, as the carrier concentration ncreases. This two-magnon peak energy also determines the B1g superconducting gap energy as $2Δ\approx α\hbar ω_{\rm Two-Magnon} \approx J_{\rm effective}$ $(α=0.34-0.41)$ from under to overdoping hole concentration.

Optical spectra measured on cleaved surfaces of double-exchange ferromagnet La1-xSrxMnO3

Optical reflectivity spectra were measured on cleaved surfaces of La1-xSrxMnO3 single crystals (x=0.175, T_C=283 K) over a temperature range 10-295 K. The optical conductivity $sigma(ω)$ shows, keeping single-component nature, incoherent-to-coherent crossover with increase of electrical conductivity. The $σ(ω)$ spectrum of low-temperature ferromagnetic-metallic phase (10 K) exhibits a pronounced Drude-like component with large spectral weight, contrary to the previous result. The present result indicates that the optical spectrum of the manganites is sensitive to condition of sample surfaces.

Precise Measurement of Optical Reflectivity Spectra Using Defect-Free Surface of La(1-x)Sr(x)MnO(3): Evidence Against Extremely Small Drude Weight

Optical reflectivity spectra of La(1-x)Sr(x)MnO(3) (0<=x<=0.30) were measured on cleavage surfaces of single crystals. The optical conductivity $σ(w) of ferromagnetic-metal La(0.70)Sr(0.30)MnO(3) is characterized by a Drude-like - but not simple Drude - component with large spectral weight below 1.6 eV, which yields a large effective carrier number N*_eff consistent with the results of Hall coefficient and specific heat measurements. The present result demonstrates that the previous result of "small Drude weight" originates from the damage of the sample surface. The Sr-substitution effect on the electronic structure and the origin of the unconventional $σ(w) are also discussed.
