Hypernuclear event detection in the nuclear emulsion with Monte Carlo simulation and machine learning

This study developed a novel method for detecting hypernuclear events recorded in nuclear emulsion sheets using machine learning techniques. The artificial neural network-based object detection model was trained on surrogate images created through Monte Carlo simulations and image-style transformations using generative adversarial networks. The performance of the proposed model was evaluated using $α$-decay events obtained from the J-PARC E07 emulsion data. The model achieved approximately twice the detection efficiency of conventional image processing and reduced the time spent on manual visual inspection by approximately 1/17. The established method was successfully applied to the detection of hypernuclear events. This approach is a state-of-the-art tool for discovering rare events recorded in nuclear emulsion sheets without any real data for training.

Search for the rare decay $K^+\toμ^+ν\barνν$

Evidence of the $K^+\toμ^+ν\barνν$ decay was searched for using E949 experimental data with an exposure of $1.70\times 10^{12}$ stopped kaons. The data sample is dominated by the backgrond process $K^+\toμ^+ν_μγ$. An upper limit on the decay rate $Γ(K^+\toμ^+ν\barνν)< 2.4\times 10^{-6}Γ(K^+\to all)$ at 90% confidence level was set assuming the Standard Model muon spectrum. The data are presented in such a way as to allow calculation of rates for any assumed $μ^+$ spectrum.

Search for heavy neutrinos in $K^+\toμ^+ν_H$ decays

Evidence of a heavy neutrino, $ν_H$, in the $K^+\toμ^+ν_H$ decays was sought using the E949 experimental data with an exposure of $1.70\times 10^{12}$ stopped kaons. With the major background from the radiative $K^+\toμ^+ν_μγ$ decay understood and suppressed, upper limits (90% C.L.) on the neutrino mixing matrix element between muon and heavy neutrino, $|U_{μH}|^2$, were set at the level of $10^{-7}$ to $10^{-9}$ for the heavy neutrino mass region 175 to 300 MeV/$c^2$.

First $πK$ atom lifetime and $πK$ scattering length measurements

The results of a search for hydrogen-like atoms consisting of $π^{\mp}K^{\pm}$ mesons are presented. Evidence for $πK$ atom production by 24 GeV/c protons from CERN PS interacting with a nickel target has been seen in terms of characteristic $πK$ pairs from their breakup in the same target ($178 \pm 49$) and from Coulomb final state interaction ($653 \pm 42$). Using these results the analysis yields a first value for the $πK$ atom lifetime of $τ=(2.5_{-1.8}^{+3.0})$ fs and a first model-independent measurement of the S-wave isospin-odd $πK$ scattering length $\left|a_0^-\right|=\frac{1}{3}\left|a_{1/2}-a_{3/2}\right|= \left(0.11_{-0.04}^{+0.09} \right)M_π^{-1}$ ($a_I$ for isospin $I$).

Evidence for $πK$-atoms with DIRAC

We present evidence for the first observation of electromagnetically bound $π^\pm K^\mp$-pairs ($πK$-atoms) with the DIRAC experiment at the CERN-PS. The $πK$-atoms are produced by the 24 GeV/c proton beam in a thin Pt-target and the $π^\pm$ and $K^\mp$-mesons from the atom dissociation are analyzed in a two-arm magnetic spectrometer. The observed enhancement at low relative momentum corresponds to the production of 173 $\pm$ 54 $πK$-atoms. The mean life of $πK$-atoms is related to the s-wave $πK$-scattering lengths, the measurement of which is the goal of the experiment. From these first data we derive a lower limit for the mean life of 0.8 fs at 90% confidence level.

Study of the decay K+ => pi+,nu,nubar in the momentum region 140<Ppi<199 MeV/c

Experiment E949 at Brookhaven National Laboratory has observed three new events consistent with the decay K+ => pi+,nu,nubar in the pion momentum region 140 < P_pi < 199 MeV/c in an exposure of 1.71e12 stopped kaons with an estimated total background of 0.93+-0.17(stat.)+0.32-0.24(syst.) events. This brings the total number of observed K+ => pi+,nu,nubar events to seven. Combining this observation with previous results, assuming the pion spectrum predicted by the standard model, results in a branching ratio of (1.73+1.15-1.05)e-10. An interpretation of the results for alternative models of the decay K^ => pi+,nothing is also presented.

Chiral Sigma Model with Pion Mean Field in Finite Nuclei

The properties of infinite matter and finite nuclei are studied by using the chiral sigma model in the framework of the relativistic mean field theory. We reconstruct an extended chiral sigma model in which the omega meson mass is generated dynamically by the sigma condensation in the vacuum in the same way as the nucleon mass. All the parameters of chiral sigma model are essentially fixed from the hadron properties in the free space. In nuclear matter, the saturation property comes out right, but the incompressibility is too large and the scalar and vector potentials are about a half of the phenomenological ones, respectively. This fact is reflected to the properties of finite nuclei. We calculate N = Z even-even mass nuclei between N = 16 and N = 34. The extended chiral sigma model without the pion mean field leads to the result that the magic number appears at N = 18 instead of N = 20 and the magic number does not appear at N = 28 due to the above mentioned nuclear matter properties. The latter problem, however, could be removed by the introduction of the finite pion mean field with the appearance of the magic number at N = 28. We find that the energy differences between the spin-orbit partners are reproduced by the finite pion mean field which is completely a different mechanism from the standard spin-orbit interaction.

Relativistic mean field theory for deformed nuclei with pairing correlations

We develop a relativistic mean field (RMF) description of deformed nuclei with the pairing correlations in the BCS approximation. The treatment of the pairing correlations for nuclei with the Fermi surface being close to the threshold of unbound states needs a special attention. To this end, we take the delta function interaction for the pairing interaction with the hope to pick up those states with the wave function being concentrated in the nuclear region and perform the standard BCS approximation for the single particle states generated by the RMF theory with deformation. We apply the RMF + BCS method to the Zr isotopes and obtain a good description of the binding energies and the nuclear radii of nuclei from the proton drip line to the neutron drip line.

Exact description of D-branes in K-matrix theory

We summarize how to describe D-branes in a matrix theory based on unstable D-instantons, which we call K-matrix theory, and explicity show that D-branes can be constructed as bound states of infinitly many unstable D-instantons. We examine the fluctuations around Dp-brane solutions in the matrix theory and show that they correctly reproduce fields on the Dp-brane world-volume. Plugging them into the action of the matrix theory, we precisely obtain the Dp-brane action as the effective action of the fluctuations.

Coupling of Rolling Tachyon to Closed Strings

We study the late time behavior of the boundary state representing the rolling tachyon constructed by Sen. It is found that the coupling of the rolling tachyon to massive modes of the closed string grows exponentially as the system evolves. We argue that the description of rolling tachyon by a boundary state is valid during the finite time determined by string coupling, and that energy could be dissipated to the bulk beyond this time. We also comment on the relation between the rolling tachyon boundary state and the spacelike D-brane boundary state.

Tachyon Matter in Boundary String Field Theory

We analyse the classical decay process of unstable D-branes in superstring theory using the boundary string field theory (BSFT) action. We show that the solutions of the equations of motion for the tachyon field asymptotically approach to T=x^0 and the pressure rapidly falls off at late time producing the tachyon matter irrespective of the initial condition. We also consider the cosmological evolution driven by the rolling tachyon using the BSFT action as an effective action.

D-branes, Matrix Theory and K-homology

In this paper, we study a new matrix theory based on non-BPS D-instantons in type IIA string theory and D-instanton - anti D-instanton system in type IIB string theory, which we call K-matrix theory. The theory correctly incorporates the creation and annihilation processes of D-branes. The configurations of the theory are identified with spectral triples, which are the noncommutative generalization of Riemannian geometry a la Connes, and they represent the geometry on the world-volume of higher dimensional D-branes. Remarkably, the configurations of D-branes in the K-matrix theory are naturally classified by a K-theoretical version of homology group, called K-homology. Furthermore, we argue that the K-homology correctly classifies the D-brane configurations from a geometrical point of view. We also construct the boundary states corresponding to the configurations of the K-matrix theory, and explicitly show that they represent the higher dimensional D-branes.

D-branes and KK-theory in Type I String Theory

We analyse unstable D-brane systems in type I string theory. Generalizing the proposal in hep-th/0108085, we give a physical interpretation for real KK-theory and claim that the D-branes embedded in a product space X x Y which are made from the unstable Dp-brane system wrapped on Y are classified by a real KK-theory group KKO^{p-1}(X,Y). The field contents of the unstable D-brane systems are systematically described by a hidden Clifford algebra structure. We also investigate the matrix theory based on non-BPS D-instantons and show that the spectrum of D-branes in the theory is exactly what we expect in type I string theory, including stable non-BPS D-branes with Z_2 charge. We explicitly construct the D-brane solutions in the framework of BSFT and analyse the physical property making use of the Clifford algebra.

Relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov Approach for Nuclear Matter with Non-Linear Coupling Terms

We investigate the pairing property of nuclear matter with Relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov(RHB) approach. Recently, the RHB approach has been widely applied to nuclear matter and finite nuclei. We have extended the RHB approach to be able to include non-linear coupling terms of mesons. In this paper we apply it to nuclear matter and observe the effect of non-linear terms on pairing gaps.

Orientifolds, RR Torsion, and K-theory

We analyze the role of RR fluxes in orientifold backgrounds from the point of view of K-theory, and demonstrate some physical implications of describing these fluxes in K-theory rather than cohomology. In particular, we show that certain fractional shifts in RR charge quantization due to discrete RR fluxes are naturally explained in K-theory. We also show that some orientifold backgrounds, which are considered distinct in the cohomology classification, become equivalent in the K-theory description, while others become unphysical.

The first search for the decay K^+ -> pi^+ pi^0 nu nubar has been performed with the E787 detector at BNL. Based on zero events observed in the kinematical search region defined by 90 MeV/c < P_{pi^+} < 188 MeV/c and 135 MeV < E_{pi^0} < 180 MeV, an upper limit B(K^+ -> pi^+ pi^0 nu nubar) < 4.3 x 10^{-5} at 90% confidence level is established.

Systematic Study of Triaxial Deformation in the Relativistic Mean Field Theory

We use the relativistic mean field (RMF) theory to systematically study the change of deformation of even-even nuclei in the proton-rich Xe region. We investigate the appearance of triaxial deformation in 25 nuclei in the region covering Z=50-58 and N=64-72 by performing constrained, triaxially symmetric RMF calculations of their energy surfaces. We include pairing correlations using the BCS formalism. We find that the Sn isotopes are spherical and the Te isotopes are very gamma unstable with shallow minima around gamma = 60 degrees. Adding more protons, the Xe, Ba and Ce isotopes have prolate deformations with their sizes increasing with proton number. The neutron number dependence is found to be small. We compare the calculated results with the available experimented data on the binding energy and the radii.

M-theory description of 1/4 BPS states in N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory

We discuss BPS states preserving 1/4 supersymmetries of N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory as M2-branes holomorphically embedded and ending on M5-branes. We use techniques in electrodynamics to find the M2-brane configurations, and give some explicit examples. In case the M2-brane worldsheet has handles, the worldsheet moduli of the M2-brane is constrained in a discrete manner. Several aspects of multi-pronged strings in type IIB string theory are beautifully reproduced in the M-theory description. We also discuss the relation between the above construction and the D2-brane dynamics in type IIA string theory.
