'Electron' and 'photon' emerging from supersymmetric neutral particles: A possible realization in ultracold Bose-Fermi atom mixture

We show that the 'electron' and 'photon' can emerge from a supersymmetric Hubbard model which is a non-relativistic theory of the neutral particles. The Higgs boson and 'photon' may not appear in the same phase of the phase diagram. In a Mott insulator phase of the boson, the 'electron' and 'photon' are stablized by an induced Coulomb interaction between 'electrons'. This emergent mechanism may be 'realized' in an ultracold Bose-Fermi atom mixture except the long range Coulomb interaction is repalced by a nearest neighbor one. We suggest to create 'external electric field' so that the 'electron' excitation can be observed by measuring the linear density-density response of the 'electron' gas to the 'external field' in the time flying experiment of the mixture. The Fermi surface of the 'electron' gas may also be expected to be observed in the time flying.

Phase diagram of ultracold atoms on optical lattice: Comparative study to slave fermion and slave boson for Bose Hubbard modelPhase diagram of ultracold atoms in optical lattices: Comparative study of slave fermion and slave boson approaches to Bose-Hubbard model

We perform a comparative study of the finite temperature behavior of ultracold Bose atoms in optical lattices by the slave fermion and the slave boson approaches to the Bose Hubbard model. The phase diagram of the system is presented. Although both approaches are equivalent without approximations, the mean field theory based on the slave fermion technique is quantitatively more appropriate. Conceptually, the slave fermion approach automatically excludes the double occupancy of two identical fermions on the same lattice site. By comparing to known results in limiting cases, we find the slave fermion approach better than the slave boson approach. For example, in the non-interacting limit, the critical temperature of the superfluid-normal liquid transition calculated by the slave fermion approach is closer to the well-known ideal Bose gas result. At zero-temperature limit of the critical interaction strength from the slave fermion approach is also closer to that from the direct calculation using a zero-temperature mean field theory.

Luttinger liquid with strong spin-orbital coupling and Zeeman splitting in quantum wires

We study a one-dimensional interacting electron gas with the strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman splitting in a quantum well. A bosonization theory is developed for this system. The tunneling current may deviate from a simple power law which is that in an ordinary Luttinger liquid. The microscopic interacting coupling and the spin-orbital parameter may be measured by varying the external magnetic field in the tunneling experiment.

Non conservation of the magnetization current across magnetic hetero-structures

We show that when the magnetizations on opposite sides of a junction are not collinear, the magnetization current is not conserved as the junction is crossed. Thus the usual treatment of this problem needs to be modified. We argue that this is due to an implicit assumption of an external torque that is required to clamp the magnetization in place. The physical consequence of this is explored.

Left-handed materials in metallic magnetic granular composites

There is recently interests in the ``left-handed '' materials. In these materials the direction of the wave vector of electromagnetic radiation is opposite to the direction of the energy flow. We present simple arguments that suggests that magnetic composites can also be left-handed materials. However, the physics involved seems to be different from the original argument. In our argument, the imaginary part of the dielectric constant is much larger than the real part, opposite to the original argument.

Insulator-Superfluid transition of spin-1 bosons in an optical lattice in magnetic field

We study the insulator-superfluid transition of spin-1 bosons in an optical lattice in a uniform magnetic field. Based on a mean-field approximation we obtained a zero-temperature phase diagram. We found that depending on the particle number the transition for bosons with antiferromagnetic interaction may occur into different superfluid phases with spins aligned along or opposite to the field direction. This is qualitatively different from the field-free transition for which the mean-field theory predicts a unique (polar) superfluid state for any particle number.

Co-ordination between Rashba spin-orbital interaction and space charge effect and enhanced spin injection into semiconductors

We consider the effect of the Rashba spin-orbital interaction and space charge in a ferromagnet-insulator/semiconductor/insulator-ferromagnet junction where the spin current is severely affected by the doping, band structure and charge screening in the semiconductor. In diffusion region, if the the resistance of the tunneling barriers is comparable to the semiconductor resistance, the magnetoresistance of this junction can be greatly enhanced under appropriate doping by the co-ordination between the Rashba effect and screened Coulomb interaction in the nonequilibrium transport processes within Hartree approximation.

Electron space charge effect on spin injection into semiconductors

We consider spin polarized transport in a ferromagnet-insulator/semiconductor/insulator-ferromagnet (F1-I-S-I-F2) junction. We find that the spin current is strongly dependent on the spin configurations, the doping and space charge distribution in the semiconductor. When the ferromagnet-semiconductor interface resistance is comparable to the semiconductor resistance, the magnetoresistance ratio of this junction can be greatly enhanced under appropriate doping when the space charge effect in the nonequilibrium transport processes is taken into consideration.

Collapse transition in mixtures of Bosons and Fermions

For mixtures of Bose and Fermi alkali atoms, the Fermion degrees of freedom can be integrated out in their {\bf finite temperature} partition function. The final result can be expanded as a power series in the Boson density. Under appropriate conditions, the pairwise interaction between the bosons can be changed from positive to negative at a low enough temperature by the Fermion-mediated term and the Boson cloud may then collapse. For attractive Fermion-Boson interactions, there is also a collapse of the Fermion cloud. This transition is first order (discontinuous) because the leading order nonlinear interaction term between the Bosons is {\bf third order in Boson density with a negative coefficient}. We discuss the finite temperature phase diagram of this transition. Our result may provide for an explanation of recent experimental observations by Modungo and coworkers.

Current induced magnetization switching in magnetic tunnel junctions

A new mechanism different from the spin accumulation picture is proposed for the current induced magnetization switching in magnetic tunnel junctions by taking into account the effect of the electron electron interaction. We found in tunnel structures the possibility of an enhanced spin switching effect that, when normalized with respect to the current, is much bigger than that in multilayers. Some recent experimental results show evidence for the present picture.

Phase separation and vortex states in binary mixture of Bose-Einstein condensates in the trapping potentials with displaced centers

The system of two simultaneously trapped codensates consisting of $^{87}Rb$ atoms in two different hyperfine states is investigated theoretically in the case when the minima of the trapping potentials are displaced with respect to each other. It is shown that the small shift of the minima of the trapping potentials leads to the considerable displacement of the centers of mass of the condensates, in agreement with the experiment. It is also shown that the critical angular velocities of the vortex states of the system drastically depend on the shift and the relative number of particles in the condensates, and there is a possibility to exchange the vortex states between condensates by shifting the centers of the trapping potentials.

Statics and dynamics of phase segregation in multicomponent fermion gas

We investigate the statics and dynamics of spatial phase segregation process of a mixture of fermion atoms in a harmonic trap using the density functional theory. The kinetic energy of the fermion gas is written in terms of the density and its gradients. Several cases have been studied by neglecting the gradient terms (the Thomas-Fermi limit) which are then compared with the Monte-Carlo results using the full gradient corrected kinetic energy. A linear instability analysis has been performed using the random-phase approximation. Near the onset of instability, the fastest unstable mode for spinodal decomposition is found to occur at $q=0$. However, in the strong coupling limit, many more modes with $q\approx K_F$ decay with comparable time scales.

Theoretical investigation on the possibility of preparing left-handed materials in metallic magnetic granular composites

We investigate the possibility of preparing left-handed materials in metallic magnetic granular composites. Based on the effective medium approximation, we show that by incorporating metallic magnetic nanoparticles into an appropriate insulating matrix and controlling the directions of magnetization of metallic magnetic components and their volume fraction, it may be possible to prepare a composite medium of low eddy current loss which is left-handed for electromagnetic waves propagating in some special direction and polarization in a frequency region near the ferromagnetic resonance frequency. This composite may be easier to make on an industrial scale. In addition, its physical properties may be easily tuned by rotating the magnetization locally.

Realization of an ultra-high magnetic field on a nano-scale

In tunnel junctions of which at least one side is a ferromagnet, very large magnetic polarization change ($\approx 0.1 μ_B$) and splitting of the spin up and spin down Fermi energy ($\approx 0.1 eV$) can be created under steady state finite current conditions (bias voltage $\approx$ 1 volt). This is {\bf much higher} than can be created by the highest magnetic field on earth. We illustrate this with a specific calculation of a recently observed very large Hall effect in the Al side of a Co-I-Al tunnel junction. Other recent experiments that support this idea are discussed.

Vortex states in binary mixture of Bose-Einstein condensates

The vortex configurations in the Bose-Einstein condensate of the mixture of two different spin states |F=1,m_f=-1> and |2,1> of ^{87}Rb atoms corresponding to the recent experiments by Matthews et. al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 83, 2498 (1999)) are considered in the framework of the Thomas-Fermi approximation as functions of N_2/N_1, where N_1 is the number of atoms in the state |1,-1> and N_2 - in the state |2,1>. It is shown that for nonrotating condensates the configuration with the |1,-1> fluid forming the shell about the |2,1> fluid (configuration "a") has lower energy than the opposite configuration (configuration "b") for all values of N_2/N_1. When the |1,-1> fluid has net angular momentum and forms an equatorial ring around the resting central condensate |2,1>, the total energy of the system is higher than the ground energy, but the configuration "a" has lower energy than the configuration "b" for all N_2/N_1. On the other hand, when the |2> fluid has the net angular momentum, for the lowest value of the angular momentum \hbar l (l=1) there is the range of the ratio N_2/N_1 where the configuration "b" has lower energy than the configuration "a". For higher values of the angular momentum the configuration "b" is stable for all values of N_2/N_1.

Phase separation and vortex states in binary mixture of Bose-Einstein condensates

The phase separation and vortex states in two-component Bose-Einstein condensate consisting of $|F=1,m_f=-1>$ and $|2,1>$ internal spin states of $^{87}Rb$ atoms are considered in the framework of Thomas-Fermi approximation. It is shown that in nonrotating system the atoms in the state $|1,-1>$ form a shell about the atoms in the state $|2,1>$. The critical angular velocity for each state is calculated. These velocities are drastically dependent on the mutual concentrations of the components, the critical angular velocity of the outer component being less than the angular velocity of the inner one. It is shown that the atoms in the $|1,-1>$ state can form a rotating ring about the resting core of the atoms in the state $|2,1>$.

Quantum Spinodal Decomposition in Multicomponent Bose-Einstein Condensates

We investigate analytically the non-equilibrium spatial phase segregation process of a mixture of alkali Bose-Einstein condensates. Two stages (I and II) are found in analogy to the classical spinodal decomposition. The coupled non-linear Schrödinger equations enable us to give a quantitative picture of the present dynamical process in a square well trap. Both time and length scales in the stage I are obtained. We further propose that the stage II is dominated by the Josephson effect between different domains of same condensate different from scenarios in the classical spinodal decomposition. Its time scale is estimated.
