Turing patterns on polymerized membranes: a coarse-grained lattice modelling with internal degree of freedom for polymer direction

We numerically study Turing patterns (TPs) on two-dimensional surfaces with a square boundary in ${\bf R}^3$ using a surface model for polymerized membranes. The variables used to describe the membranes correspond to two distinct degrees of freedom: an internal degree of freedom for the polymer directions in addition to the positional degree of freedom. This generalised surface model enables us to identify a non-trivial interference between the TP system and the membranes. To this end, we employ a hybrid numerical technique, utilising Monte Carlo updates for membrane configurations and discrete time iterations for the FitzHugh-Nagumo type Turing equation. The simulation results clearly show that anisotropies in the mechanical deformation properties, particularly the easy axes associated with the stretching and bending of the membranes, determine the direction of the TPs to be perpendicular or parallel to the easy axes. Additionally, by calculating the dependence of the maximum entropy on the internal degree of freedom, we can obtain information on the relaxation with respect to the polymer structure. This crucial information serves to remind us that non-equilibrium configurations can be captured within the canonical Monte Carlo simulations.

A Cold/Ultracold Neutron Detector using Fine-grained Nuclear Emulsion with Spatial Resolution less than 100 nm

A new type of cold/ultracold neutron detector that can realize a spatial resolution of less than 100 nm was developed using nuclear emulsion. The detector consists of a fine-grained nuclear emulsion coating and a 50-nm thick $^{10}$B$_4$C layer for the neutron conversion. The detector was exposed to cold and ultracold neutrons (UCNs) at the J-PARC. Detection efficiencies were measured as (0.16$\pm$0.02)% and (12$\pm$2)% for cold and ultracold neutrons consistently with the $^{10}$B content in the converter. Positions of individual neutrons can be determined by observing secondary particle tracks recorded in the nuclear emulsion. The spatial resolution of incident neutrons were found to be in the range of 11-99 nm in the angle region of tan$θ\leq 1.9$, where $θ$ is the angle between a recorded track and the normal direction of the converter layer. The achieved spatial resolution corresponds to the improvement of one or two orders of magnitude compared with conventional techniques and it is comparable with the wavelength of UCNs.

Polaron formation as a genuine nonequilibrium phenomenon

Solitons and polarons at nonequilibrium steady states are investigated for the spinless Takayama Lin-Liu Maki model. Polarons are found to be possible {\it only out of equilibrium}. This polaron formation is a genuine nonequilibrium phenomenon, as there is a lower threshold current below which they cannot exist. It is considered to be an example of microscopic dissipative structure.

Static Soliton at Nonequilibrium Steady State

Nonequlibrium phase transition of an open Takayama-Lin Liu-Maki chain coupled with two reservoirs is investigated. We will show that solitons connecting two uniform phases are possible, and the amplitude of solitons obeys the same self-consistent equation as that of uniform phases.

Statistical properties of spectral fluctuations for a quantum system with infinitely many components

Extending the idea formulated in Makino {\it{et al}}[Phys.Rev.E {\bf{67}},066205], that is based on the Berry--Robnik approach [M.V. Berry and M. Robnik, J. Phys. A {\bf{17}}, 2413], we investigate the statistical properties of a two-point spectral correlation for a classically integrable quantum system. The eigenenergy sequence of this system is regarded as a superposition of infinitely many independent components in the semiclassical limit. We derive the level number variance (LNV) in the limit of infinitely many components and discuss its deviations from Poisson statistics. The slope of the limiting LNV is found to be larger than that of Poisson statistics when the individual components have a certain accumulation. This property agrees with the result from the semiclassical periodic-orbit theory that is applied to a system with degenerate torus actions[D. Biswas, M.Azam, and S.V.Lawande, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 43}, 5694].

Lateral Effects in Fermion Antibunching

Lateral effects are analyzed in the antibunching of a beam of free non-interacting fermions. The emission of particles from a source is dynamically described in a 3D full quantum field-theoretical framework. The size of the source and the detectors, as well as the temperature of the source are taken into account and the behavior of the visibility is scrutinized as a function of these parameters.

On the Assumption of Initial Factorization in the Master Equation for Weakly Coupled Systems II: Solvable Models

We analyze some solvable models of a quantum mechanical system in interaction with a reservoir when the initial state is not factorized. We apply Nakajima-Zwanzig's projection method by choosing a reference state of the reservoir endowed with the mixing property. In van Hove's limit, the dynamics is described in terms of a master equation. We observe that Markovianity becomes a valid approximation for timescales that depend both on the form factors of the interaction and on the observables of the reservoir that can be measured.

On the Assumption of Initial Factorization in the Master Equation for Weakly Coupled Systems I: General Framework

We analyze the dynamics of a quantum mechanical system in interaction with a reservoir when the initial state is not factorized. In the weak-coupling (van Hove) limit, the dynamics can be properly described in terms of a master equation, but a consistent application of Nakajima-Zwanzig's projection method requires that the reference (not necessarily equilibrium) state of the reservoir be endowed with the mixing property.

Reconnection of Unstable/Stable Manifolds of the Harper Map

The Harper map is one of the simplest chaotic systems exhibiting reconnection of invariant manifolds. The method of asymptotics beyond all orders (ABAO) is used to construct unstable/stable manifolds of the Harper map. By enlarging the neighborhood of a singularity, the perturbative solution of the unstable manifold is expressed as a Borel summable asymptotic expansion in a sector including $t=-\infty$ and is analytically continued to the other sectors, where the solution acquires new terms describing heteroclinic tangles. When the parameter changes to the reconnection threshold, the unstable/stable manifolds are shown to acquire new oscillatory portion corresponding to the heteroclinic tangle after the reconnection.

Method of Asymptotics beyond All Orders and Restriction on Maps

The method of asymptotics beyond all orders (ABAO) is known to be a useful tool to investigate separatrix splitting of several maps. For a class of simplectic maps, the form of maps is shown to be restricted by the conditions for the ABAO method to work well. More over, we check that the standard map, H\' enon map and the cubic map satisfy the restrcitions.

Long-Range Spectral Statistics of Classically Integrable Systems --Investigation along the Line of the Berry-Robnik Approach--

Extending the argument of Ref.\citen{[4]} to the long-range spectral statistics of classically integrable quantum systems, we examine the level number variance, spectral rigidity and two-level cluster function. These observables are obtained by applying the approach of Berry and Robnik\cite{[0]} and the mathematical framework of Pandey \cite{[2]} to systems with infinitely many components, and they are parameterized by a single function $\bar{c}$, where $\bar{c}=0$ corresponds to Poisson statistics, and $\bar{c}\not=0$ indicates deviations from Poisson statistics. This implies that even when the spectral components are statistically independent, non-Poissonian spectral statistics are possible.

Control of decoherence: analysis and comparison of three different strategies

We analyze and compare three different strategies, all aimed at controlling and eventually halting decoherence. The first strategy hinges upon the quantum Zeno effect, the second makes use of frequent unitary interruptions ("bang-bang" pulses and their generalization, quantum dynamical decoupling), and the third of a strong, continuous coupling. Decoherence is shown to be suppressed only if the frequency N of the measurements/pulses is large enough or if the coupling K is sufficiently strong. Otherwise, if N or K are large, but not extremely large, all these control procedures accelerate decoherence. We investigate the problem in a general setting and then consider some practical examples, relevant for quantum computation.

Level statistics of systems with infinitely many independent components based on the Berry-Robnik approach

Along the line of thoughts of Berry and Robnik{\cite{Ber}}, the limiting gap distribution function of classically integrable quantum systems is derived in the limit of infinitely many independent components. The limiting gap distribution function is characterized by a single monotonically increasing function $\barμ(S)$ of the level spacing $S$, and the corresponding level spacing distribution is classified into three cases: (i) Poissonian if $\barμ(+\infty)=0$, (ii) Poissonian for large $S$, but possibly not for small $S$ if $0<\barμ(+\infty)< 1$, and (iii) sub-Poissonian if $\barμ(+\infty)=1$. This implies that even when the energy-level distributions of individual components are statistically independent, non-Poissonian level spacing distributions are possible.

Level spacing statistics of classically integrable systems -Investigation along the line of the Berry-Robnik approach-

By extending the approach of Berry and Robnik, the limiting level spacing distribution of a system consisting of infinitely many independent components is investigated. The limiting level spacing distribution is characterized by a single monotonically increasing function $\barμ(S)$ of the level spacing $S$. Three cases are distinguished: (i) Poissonian if $\barμ(+\infty)=0$, (ii) Poissonian for large $S$, but possibly not for small $S$ if $0<\barμ(+\infty)< 1$, and (iii) sub-Poissonian if $\barμ(+\infty)=1$. This implies that, even when energy-level distributions of individual components are statistically independent, non-Poissonian level spacing distributions are possible.

Deviations from Berry--Robnik Distribution Caused by Spectral Accumulation

By extending the Berry--Robnik approach for the nearly integrable quantum systems,\cite{[1]} we propose one possible scenario of the energy level spacing distribution that deviates from the Berry--Robnik distribution. The result described in this paper implies that deviations from the Berry--Robnik distribution would arise when energy level components show strong accumulation, and otherwise, the level spacing distribution agrees with the Berry--Robnik distribution.

Non-Poissonian level spacing statistics of classically integrable quantum systems based on the Berry-Robnik approach

Along the line of thoughts of Berry and Robnik\cite{[1]}, we investigated the gap distribution function of systems with infinitely many independent components, and discussed the level-spacing distribution of classically integrable quantum systems. The level spacing distribution is classified into three cases: Case 1: Poissonian if $\barμ(+\infty)=0$, Case 2: Poissonian for large $S$, but possibly not for small $S$ if $0<\barμ(+\infty)< 1$, and Case 3: sub-Poissonian if $\barμ(+\infty)=1$. Thus, even when the energy levels of individual components are statistically independent, non-Poisson level spacing distributions are possible.
