Melting and Equilibrium Shape of Icosahedral Gold Nanoparticles

We use molecular dynamics simulations to study the melting of gold icosahedral clusters of a few thousand atoms. We pay particular attention to the behavior of surface atoms, and to the equilibrium shape of the cluster. We find that although the surface of the cluster remains ordered up to the melting T_m, the increasing mobility of vertex and edge atoms significantly soften the surface structure, leading to inter- and intra-layer diffusion, and shrinking of the average facet size, so that the average shape of the cluster is nearly spherical at melting.

Roughness of a Tilted Anharmonic String at Depinning

We consider the discretized model of a driven string with an anharmonic elastic energy, in a two dimensional random potential, as introduced by Rosso and Krauth. Using finite size scaling, we numerically compute the roughness of the string in a uniform applied force at the critical depinning threshold. By considering a string with a net average tilt, we demonstrate that the anharmonic elastic energy crosses the model over to the quenched KPZ universality class, in agreement with recent theoretical predictions.

The Effect of Columnar Disorder on the Superconducting Transition of a Type-II Superconductor in Zero Applied Magnetic Field

We investigate the effect of random columnar disorder on the superconducting phase transition of a type-II superconductor in zero applied magnetic field using numerical simulations of three dimensional XY and vortex loop models. We consider both an unscreened model, in which the bare magnetic penetration length is approximated as infinite, and a strongly screened model, in which the magnetic penetration length is of order the vortex core radius. We consider both equilibrium and dynamic critical exponents. We show that, as in the disorder free case, the equilibrium transitions of the unscreened and strongly screened models lie in the same universality class, however scaling is now anisotropic. We find for the correlation length exponent $ν=1.2\pm 0.1$, and for the anisotropy exponent $ζ=1.3\pm 0.1$. We find different dynamic critical exponents for the unscreened and strongly screened models.

Lattice Gas Dynamics; Application to Driven Vortices in Two Dimensional Superconductors

A continuous time Monte Carlo lattice gas dynamics is developed to model driven steady states of vortices in two dimensional superconducting networks. Dramatic differences are found when compared to a simpler Metropolis dynamics. Subtle finite size effects are found at low temperature, with a moving smectic that becomes unstable to an anisotropic liquid on sufficiently large length scales.

In Search of the Vortex Loop Blowout Transition for a type-II Superconductor in a Finite Magnetic Field

The 3D uniformly frustrated XY model is simulated to search for a predicted "vortex loop blowout" transition within the vortex line liquid phase of a strongly type-II superconductor in an applied magnetic field. Results are shown to strongly depend on the precise scheme used to trace out vortex line paths. While we find evidence for a transverse vortex path percolation transition, no signal of this transition is found in the specific heat.

Disorder Driven Melting of the Vortex Line Lattice

We use Monte Carlo simulations of the 3D uniformly frustrated XY model, with uncorrelated quenched randomness in the in-plane couplings, to model the effect of random point pins on the vortex line phases of a type II superconductor. We map out the phase diagram as a function of temperature T and randomness strength p for fixed applied magnetic field. We find that, as p increases to a critical value p_c, the first order vortex lattice melting line turns parallel to the T axis, and continues smoothly down to low temperature, rather than ending at a critical point. The entropy jump across this line at p_c vanishes, but the transition remains first order. Above this disorder driven transition line, we find that the helicity modulus parallel to the applied field vanishes, and so no true phase coherent vortex glass exists.

Depinning Transition of a Two Dimensional Vortex Lattice in a Commensurate Periodic Potential

We use Monte Carlo simulations of the 2D one component Coulomb gas on a triangular lattice, to study the depinning transition of a 2D vortex lattice in a commensurate periodic potential. A detailed finite size scaling analysis indicates this transition to be first order. No significant changes in behavior were found as vortex density was varied over a wide range.

Correlation Lengths in the Vortex Line Liquid of a High Tc Superconductor

We use the three dimensional uniformly frustrated XY model, as a model for a high temperature superconductor in an applied magnetic field, to explicitly measure the longitudinal correlation length xi_z in the vortex line liquid phase. We determine the scaling of xi_z with magnetic field and system anisotropy close to the vortex lattice melting transition. We apply our results to determine the extent of longitudinal correlations in YBCO just above melting.

Positional Disorder (Random Gaussian Phase Shifts) in the Fully Frustrated Josephson Junction Array (2D XY Model)

We consider the effect of positional disorder on a Josephson junction array with an applied magnetic field of f=1/2 flux quantum per unit cell. This is equivalent to the problem of random Gaussian phase shifts in the fully frustrated 2D XY model. Using simple analytical arguments and numerical simulations, we present evidence that the ground state vortex lattice of the pure model becomes disordered, in the thermodynamic limit, by any amount of positional disorder.

Critical Behavior of the Meissner Transition in the Lattice London Superconductor

We carry out Monte Carlo simulations of the three dimensional (3D) lattice London superconductor in zero applied magnetic field, making a detailed finite size scaling analysis of the Meissner transition. We find that the magnetic penetration length λ, and the correlation length ξ, scale as λ~ ξ~ |t|^{-ν}, with ν= 0.66 \pm 0.03, consistent with ordinary 3D XY universality, ν_XY ~ 2/3. Our results confirm the anomalous scaling dimension of magnetic field correlations at T_c.

Glassiness Vs. Order in Densely Frustrated Josephson Arrays

We carry out extensive Monte Carlo simulations on the Coulomb gas dual to the uniformly frustrated two dimensional XY model, for a sequence of frustrations f converging to the irraltional (3-sqrt 5)/2. We find in these systems a sharp first order equilibrium phase transition to an ordered vortex structure at a T_c which varies only slightly with f. This ordered vortex structure remains in general phase incoherent until a lower pinning transition T_p(f) that varies with f. We argue that the glassy behaviors reported for this model in earlier simulations are dynamic effects.

Helicity Modulus and Fluctuating Type II Superconductors: Elastic Approximation and Numerical Simulations

We develop the helicity modulus as a criterion for superconducting order in the mixed phase of a fluctuating type II superconductor. We show that there is a duality relation between this helicity modulus and the superfluid density of a system of analog 2D bosons. We show that the vortex line lattice exhibits a perfect Meissner effect with respect to a shearing perturbation of the applied magnetic field, and this becomes our creterion for "longitudinal superconductivity" parallel to the applied field. We present arguments based on the 2D boson analogy, as well as the results of numerical simulations, that suggest that longitudinal superconductivity can persist into the vortex line liquid state for systems of finite thickness, comparable to those commonly found in experiments.

Phase Transitions in a Model Anisotropic High Tc Superconductor

We carry out simulations of the anisotropic uniformly frustrated 3D XY model, as a model for vortex line fluctuations in high Tc superconductors. We compute the phase diagram as a function of temperature and anisotropy, for a fixed applied magnetic field. We find that superconducting coherence parallel to the field persists into the vortex line liquid state, and that this transition lies well below the "mean-field" cross-over from the vortex line liquid to the normal state.

Phase Diagram of the Two Dimensional Lattice Coulomb Gas

We use Monte Carlo simulations to map out the phase diagram of the two dimensional Coulomb gas on a square lattice, as a function of density and temperature. We find that the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition remains up to higher charge densities than has been suggested by recent theoretical estimates.

Vortex Lattice Melting in 2D Superconducting Networks and Films

We carry out MC studies of 2D superconducting networks, in an applied magnetic field, for square and honeycomb geometries. We consider both dilute systems (f=1/q) and systems near full frustration (f=1/2-1/q). For the dilute case (which models a film as q->infinity), we find two transitions: at T_c(f)~1/q there is a depinning transition from a pinned to a floating vortex lattice; at T_m(f)~constant the floating vortex lattice melts into an isotropic liquid. We analyze this melting according to the Kosterlitz- Thouless theory of dislocation mediated melting, and find that the melting is weakly first order. For the case near full frustration, the system can be described in terms of the density of defects in an otherwise fully frustrated vortex pattern. We find pinned solid, floating solid, and liquid defect phases, as well as a higher sharp transition corresponding to the disordering of the fully frustrated background.

Vortex lattce melting in 2D superconductors and Josephson arrays

Monte Carlo simulations of 2D vortex lattice melting in a thin superconducting film (or alternatively an array of Josephson junctions) are performed in the London limit. Finite size scaling analyses are used to make a detailed test of the dislocation mediated melting theory of KTNHY. We find that the melting transition is weakly first order, with a jump in the shear modulus very close to that predicted by the KTNHY theory. No hexatic liquid phase is found.
