Study of the Hindrance Effect in Sub-barrier Fusion Reactions

We have measured the fusion cross sections of the 12C(13C, p)24Na reaction through off-line measurement of the beta-decay of 24Na using the beta-gamma coincidence method. Our new measurements in the energy range of Ec.m. = 2.6-3.0 MeV do not show an obvious S-factor maximum but a plateau. Comparison between this work and various models is presented.

A pathway to multivariate Gaussian density

A general principle called "conservation of the ellipsoid of concentration" is introduced and a generalized entropic form of order 'alpha' is optimized under this principle. It is shown that this can produce a density which can act as a pathway to multivariate Gaussian density. The resulting entropic pathway contains as special cases the Boltzmann-Gibbs (Shannon) and Tsallis (Havrda-Charvat) entropic forms.

Air fluorescence measurements in the spectral range 300-420 nm using a 28.5 GeV electron beam

Measurements are reported of the yield and spectrum of fluorescence, excited by a 28.5 GeV electron beam, in air at a range of pressures of interest to ultra-high energy cosmic ray detectors. The wavelength range was 300 - 420 nm. System calibration has been performed using Rayleigh scattering of a nitrogen laser beam. In atmospheric pressure dry air at 304 K the yield is 20.8 +/- 1.6 photons per MeV.

Tertiary companions to close spectroscopic binaries

We have surveyed a sample of 165 solar-type spectroscopic binaries (SB) with periods from 1 to 30 days for higher-order multiplicity. 62 targets have been observed with the NACO adaptive optics system and 13 new physical tertiary companions were detected. Another 12 new wide companions (5 still tentative) were retrieved from the 2MASS sky survey. Our binaries belong to 161 stellar systems; of these 64 are triple, 11 quadruple and 7 quintuple. After correction for incomplete detection, the fraction of SBs with additional companions is 63% +- 5%. We find that this fraction is a strong function of the SB period P, reaching 96% for P<3d and dropping to 36% for P>12d. Period distributions of SBs with and without tertiaries are significantly different, but their mass ratio distributions are identical. New statistical data on the multiplicity of close SBs indicate that their periods and mass ratios were established very early, but periods of SBs within triples were further shortened by angular momentum exchange with companions.

Resolving brane collapse with 1/N corrections in non-Abelian DBI

A collapsing spherical D2-brane carrying magnetic flux can be described in the region of small radius in a dual zero-brane picture using Tseytlin's proposal for a non-Abelian Dirac-Born-Infeld action for N D0-branes. A standard large N approximation of the D0-brane action, familiar from the brane dielectric effect, gives a time evolution which agrees with the Abelian D2-brane Born-Infeld equations which describe a D2-brane collapsing to zero size. The first 1/N correction from the symmetrised trace prescription in the zero-brane action leads to a class of classical solutions where the minimum radius of a collapsing D2-brane is lifted away from zero. We discuss the validity of this approximation to the zero-brane action in the region of the minimum, and explore higher order 1/N corrections as well as an exact finite N example. The 1/N corrected Lagrangians and the finite N example have an effective mass squared which becomes negative in some regions of phase space. We discuss the physics of this tachyonic behaviour.

Visible Effects of the Hidden Sector

The renormalization of operators responsible for soft supersymmetry breaking is usually calculated by starting at some high scale and including only visible sector interactions in the evolution equations, while ignoring hidden sector interactions. Here we explain why this is correct only for the most trivial structures in the hidden sector, and discuss possible implications. This investigation was prompted by the idea of conformal sequestering. In that framework hidden sector renormalizations by nearly conformal dynamics are critical. In the original models of conformal sequestering it was necessary to impose hidden sector flavor symmetries to achieve the sequestered form. We present models which can evade this requirement and lead to no-scale or anomaly mediated boundary conditions; but the necessary structures do not seem generic. More generally, the ratios of scalar masses to gaugino masses, the $μ$-term, the $Bμ$-term, $A$-terms, and the gravitino mass can be significantly affected.

A Precision Measurement of pp Elastic Scattering Cross Sections at Intermediate Energies

We have measured differential cross sections for \pp elastic scattering with internal fiber targets in the recirculating beam of the proton synchrotron COSY. Measurements were made continuously during acceleration for projectile kinetic energies between 0.23 and 2.59 GeV in the angular range $30 \leq θ_{c.m.} \leq 90$ deg. Details of the apparatus and the data analysis are given and the resulting excitation functions and angular distributions presented. The precision of each data point is typically better than 4%, and a relative normalization uncertainty of only 2.5% within an excitation function has been reached. The impact on phase shift analysis as well as upper bounds on possible resonant contributions in lower partial waves are discussed.

Precision Measurements at The Higgs Resonance: A Probe of Radiative Fermion Masses

The possibility of radiative generation of fermion masses from soft supersymmetry breaking chiral flavor violation is explored. Consistent models are identified and classified. Phenomenological implications for electric dipole moments and magnetic moments, as well as collider probes -- in particular those relevant at the Higgs resonance -- are discussed. It is shown that partial widths $Γ_{h^{0} \to ff}$ are enhanced compared with the minimal supersymmetric standard model.

Report of the Supersymmetry Theory Working Group

We provide a mini-guide to some of the possible manifestations of weak scale supersymmetry. For each of six scenarios we provide a brief description of the theoretical underpinnings, the adjustable parameters, a qualitative description of the associated phenomenology at future colliders, comments on how to simulate each scenario with existing event generators.

Strings And Dyonic Plasmas

Recently Olesen has shown the existence of dual string solutions to the equations of ideal Magnetohydrodynamics that describe the long wavelength properties of electrically charged plasmas. Here, we extend these solutions to include the case of plasmas consisting of point like dyons, which carry both electric and magnetic charge. Such strings are dyonic in that they consist of both magnetic and electric flux. We contrast some physical features of dyonic plasmas with those of the purely electric or magnetic type, particularly in relation to the validity of the ideal approximation.

Conformal Solutions Of Duality Invariant 2D Magnetohydrodynamic Turbulence

We consider possible conformal field theory (CFT) descriptions of the various inertial ranges that exist in $2d$ duality invariant Magnetohydrodynamics. Such models arise as effective theories of dyonic plasmas in 3 dimensions in which all fields are independent of the third coordinate. We find new constraints on the allowed CFT's compared to those that may describe turbulence in $2d$ plasmas of electric charges only. The predictions from CFT concerning equipartition of energy amongst the electric and magnetic fields are discussed, and quantities exhibiting universal scaling are derived.

Indirect Probes of New Physics

We summarize the indirect effects of new physics in a variety of processes. We consider precision electroweak measurements, the $g-2$ of the muon, rare decays, meson mixing, CP violation, lepton number violating interactions, double beta decay, and the electric dipole moments of atoms, molecules, and the neutron. We include discussions of both model independent and dependent analyses where applicable.

Gauge Coupling Constant Unification With Planck Scale Values Of Moduli

Convergence of the standard model gauge coupling constants to a common value at around $2\times 10^{16}$ GeV is studied in the context of orbifold theories where the modular symmetry groups for $T$ and $U$ moduli are broken to subgroups of $PSL(2, Z)$. The values of the moduli required for this unification of coupling constants are studied for this case and also for the case where string unification is accompanied by unification to a gauge group larger then $SU(3)\times SU(2)\times U(1).$

Special Geometry and Twisted Moduli in Orbifold Theories with Continuous Wilson Lines

Target space duality symmetries, which acts on Kähler and continuous Wilson line moduli, of a ${\bf Z}_N$ ($N\not=2$) 2-dimensional subspace of the moduli space of orbifold compactification are modified to include twisted moduli. These spaces described by the cosets $SU(n,1)\over SU(n)\times U(1)$ are $special$ Kähler, a fact which is exploited in deriving the extension of tree level duality transformation to include higher orders of the twisted moduli. Also, restrictions on these higher order terms are derived.

Spontaneous breaking of CP symmetry by orbifold moduli

CP-violating phases which contribute to the electric dipole moment(EDM) of the neutron are considered in the context of orbifold compactificationof the heterotic string. In particular, we study the situation where CP is spontaneously broken by moduli fields acquiring, in general, complex expectation values at the minimum of duality invariant low energy effective potentials. We show, by explicit minimization of such a potential in the case of the ${\bf Z}_{6}-{\rm IIb}$ orbifold, that it is the presence of so called Green-Schwarz anomaly coefficients $δ_{\rm GS}^{i} $, that leads to significant CP violating expectation values of the moduli. By evaluating the soft supersymmetry breaking moduli dependent $A$ and $B$ terms in this model, we find that the experimental bounds $Φ(A) $, $ Φ(B) $ $\leq 5 \times 10^{-3} $ are exceeded for a particular range of values of the auxiliary field of the $S$ modulus.
