Spin nematics in the bilinear-biquadratic S=1 spin chain

We report the existence of an extended critical, nondimerized region in the phase diagram of the bilinear-biquadratic spin-one chain. The dominant power law correlations are ferroquadrupolar, i.e. spin nematic in character. Another known critical region is also characterized by dominant quadrupolar correlations, although with a different wave vector. Our results show that spin nematic correlations play an important role in quantum magnets with spin S >= 1 in regions between antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic phases.

Non-local updates for quantum Monte Carlo simulations

We review the development of update schemes for quantum lattice models simulated using world line quantum Monte Carlo algorithms. Starting from the Suzuki-Trotter mapping we discuss limitations of local update algorithms and highlight the main developments beyond Metropolis-style local updates: the development of cluster algorithms, their generalization to continuous time, the worm and directed-loop algorithms and finally a generalization of the flat histogram method of Wang and Landau to quantum systems.

Performance Limitations of Flat Histogram Methods and Optimality of Wang-Landau Sampling

We determine the optimal scaling of local-update flat-histogram methods with system size by using a perfect flat-histogram scheme based on the exact density of states of 2D Ising models. The typical tunneling time needed to sample the entire bandwidth does not scale with the number of spins N as the minimal N^2 of an unbiased random walk in energy space. While the scaling is power law for the ferromagnetic and fully frustrated Ising model, for the +/- J nearest-neighbor spin glass the distribution of tunneling times is governed by a fat-tailed Frechet extremal value distribution that obeys exponential scaling. We find that the Wang-Landau algorithm shows the same scaling as the perfect scheme and is thus optimal.

Antiferromagnetism in CaCu$_{3}$Ti$_{4}$O$_{12}$ studied by magnetic Raman spectroscopy

For CaCu$_{3}$Ti$_{4}$O$_{12}$ -- an insulator that exhibits a giant dielectric response above 100 K -- Cu$^{2+}$ antiferromagnetic spin ordering has been investigated by magnetic Raman scattering and magnetization measurements. Below the Néel temperature, T$_{N} = 25$ K, magnetic excitations have been identified. Above T$_{N}$ Raman spectra reveal short-range antiferromagnetic fluctuations that increase with cooling like T$^{-1}$. No deviations from Curie-Weiss law have been observed above T$_{N}$.

Strong-Coupling Expansions for Multiparticle Excitations: Continuum and Bound States

We present a new linked cluster expansion for calculating properties of multiparticle excitation spectra to high orders. We use it to obtain the two-particle spectra for systems of coupled spin-half dimers. We find that even for weakly coupled dimers the spectrum is very rich, consisting of many bound states. The number of bound states depends on both geometry of coupling and frustration. Many of the bound states can only be seen by going to sufficiently high orders in the perturbation theory, showing the extended character of the pair-attraction.

Renormalization of the Spin-Peierls Transition due to Phonon Dynamics

We report results from a systematic strong-coupling expansion of a spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain coupled to Einstein phonons. In the non-adiabatic regime this model is used to describe zero temperature properties of CuGeO3. The linked cluster expansion allows the determination of observables in the thermodynamic limit preserving the full lattice dynamics without a truncation of the phononic Hilbert space. In particular, the spin gap and the dispersion of the elementary triplet excitation are calculated up to 10th order in a dimer expansion. The magnetic structure factor of the ground state is evaluated up to 6th order. We show that the spin-phonon coupling leads to a renormalization of the elementary triplet dispersion. Surprisingly in the non-adiabatic regime a substantial renormalization of the spin gap only sets in at much larger couplings than those proposed for CuGeO3. The ground state magnetic correlations are found to be hardly effected by the spin-phonon coupling, but dominated by the frustrating magnetic interaction in the parameter regime relevant for CuGeO3.
