Reorientation-effect measurement of the first 2$^+$ state in $^{12}$C: confirmation of oblate deformation

A Coulomb-excitation reorientation-effect measurement using the TIGRESS $γ-$ray spectrometer at the TRIUMF/ISAC II facility has permitted the first determination of the $\langle 2^+_1\mid\mid \hat{E2} \mid\mid 2^+_1\rangle$ diagonal matrix element in $^{12}$C from particle$-γ$ coincidence data. Required state-of-the-art no-core shell model calculations of the nuclear polarizability for the ground and first-excited (2$^+_1$) states in $^{12}$C using chiral NN N$^4$LO500 and NN+3NF350 interactions have been performed. Consistent predictions show a larger polarizability than previously anticipated. The polarizability of the 2$^+_1$ state is introduced into the current and previous Coulomb-excitation reorientation-effect analysis of $^{12}$C. Spectroscopic quadrupole moments of $Q_{_S}(2_1^+)= +0.053(44)$ eb and $Q_{_S}(2_1^+)= +0.08(3)$ eb are determined, respectively, yielding a weighted average of $Q_{_S}(2_1^+)= +0.071(25)$ eb, in agreement with recent ab initio calculations. The present measurement confirms that the 2$^+_1$ state of $^{12}$C is oblate and emphasizes the important role played by the nuclear polarizability in Coulomb-excitation studies of light nuclei.

CAKE: The Coincidence Array for K600 Experiments

The combination of a magnetic spectrometer and ancillary detectors such as silicon detectors is a powerful tool for the study of nuclear reactions and nuclear structure. This paper discusses the recently commissioned silicon array called the CAKE which is designed for use with the K600 magnetic spectrometer at iThemba LABS.

The $2_1^+ \to 3_1^+$ gamma width in $^{22}$Na and second class currents

A previous measurement of the $β-γ$ directional coefficient in $^{22}$Na $β$ decay was used to extract recoil-order form factors. The data indicate the requirement of a significant induced-tensor matrix element for the decay. This conclusion largely relies on a Standard-Model-allowed weak magnetism form factor which was determined using an unpublished value of the analog $2_1^+\to3_1^+$ $γ$ branch in $^{22}$Na, with the further assumption that the transition is dominated by its isovector $M1$ component. We obtain for the first time an unambiguous determination of the $2_1^+ \to 3_1^+$ branch in $^{22}$Na to be $0.45(8)\%$. Using the Conserved Vector Current (CVC) hypothesis, our branch determines the weak magnetism form factor for $^{22}$Na $β$ decay to be $|b/Ac_1| = 8.7(1.1)$. Together with the $β-γ$ angular correlation coefficient, we obtain a large induced-tensor form factor for the decay that continues to disagree with theoretical predictions. Two plausible explanations are suggested.

Characterization of the proposed 4-α cluster state candidate in 16O

The $\mathrm{^{16}O}(α, α^{\prime})$ reaction was studied at $θ_{lab} = 0^\circ$ at an incident energy of $\textrm{E}_{lab}$ = 200 MeV using the K600 magnetic spectrometer at iThemba LABS. Proton and $α$-decay from the natural parity states were observed in a large-acceptance silicon-strip detector array at backward angles. The coincident charged particle measurements were used to characterize the decay channels of the $0_{6}^{+}$ state in $\mathrm{^{16}O}$ located at $E_{x} = 15.097(5)$ MeV. This state is identified by several theoretical cluster calculations to be a good candidate for the 4-$α$ cluster state. The results of this work suggest the presence of a previously unidentified resonance at $E_{x}\approx15$ MeV that does not exhibit a $0^{+}$ character. This unresolved resonance may have contaminated previous observations of the $0_{6}^{+}$ state.

Shell evolution approaching the N=20 island of inversion: structure of 26Na

The levels in 26Na with single particle character have been observed for the first time using the d(25Na,p gamma) reaction at 5 MeV/nucleon. The measured excitation energies and the deduced spectroscopic factors are in good overall agreement with (0+1) hbar-omega shell model calculations performed in a complete spsdfp basis and incorporating a reduction in the N=20 gap. Notably, the 1p3/2 neutron configuration was found to play an enhanced role in the structure of the low-lying negative parity states in 26Na, compared to the isotone 28Al. Thus, the lowering of the 1p3/2 orbital relative to the 0f7/2 occurring in the neighbouring Z=10 and 12 nuclei -- 25,27Ne and 27,29Mg -- is seen also to occur at Z=11 and further strengthens the constraints on the modelling of the transition into the island of inversion.

High-Precision Measurement of the 19Ne Half-Life and Implications for Right-Handed Weak Currents

We report a precise determination of the 19Ne half-life to be $T_{1/2} = 17.262 \pm 0.007$ s. This result disagrees with the most recent precision measurements and is important for placing bounds on predicted right-handed interactions that are absent in the current Standard Model. We are able to identify and disentangle two competing systematic effects that influence the accuracy of such measurements. Our findings prompt a reassessment of results from previous high-precision lifetime measurements that used similar equipment and methods.

The beta Decay of 32Cl: Precision gamma-Ray Spectroscopy and a Measurement of Isospin-Symmetry Breaking

Background: Models to calculate small isospin-symmetry-breaking effects in superallowed Fermi decays have been placed under scrutiny in recent years. A stringent test of these models is to measure transitions for which the correction is predicted to be large. The decay of 32Cl decay provides such a test case. Purpose: To improve the gamma yields following the beta decay of 32Cl and to determine the ft values of the the beta branches, particularly the one to the isobaric-analogue state in 32S. Method: Reaction-produced and recoil-spectrometer-separated 32Cl is collected in tape and transported to a counting location where beta-gamma coincidences are measured with a precisely-calibrated HPGe detector. Results: The precision on the gamma yields for most of the known beta branches has been improved by about an order of magnitude, and many new transitions have been observed. We have determined 32Cl-decay transition strengths extending up to E_x~11 MeV. The ft value for the decay to the isobaric-analogue state in 32S has been measured. A comparison to a shell-model calculation shows good agreement. CONCLUSIONS: We have experimentally determined the isospin-symmetry-breaking correction to the superallowed transition of this decay to be (δ_C-δ_NS)_exp=5.4(9)%, significantly larger than for any other known superallowed Fermi transition. This correction agrees with a shell-model calculation, which yields δ_C-δ_NS=4.8(5)%. Our results also provide a way to improve the measured ft values for the beta decay of 32Ar.

Experimental Validation of the Largest Calculated Isospin-Symmetry-Breaking Effect in a Superallowed Fermi Decay

A precision measurement of the gamma yields following the beta decay of 32Cl has determined its isobaric analogue branch to be (22.47^{+0.21}_{-0.19})%. Since it is an almost pure Fermi decay, we can also determine the amount of isospin-symmetry breaking in this superallowed transition. We find a very large value, delta_C=5.3(9)%, in agreement with a shell-model calculation. This result sets a benchmark for isospin-symmetry-breaking calculations and lends support for similarly-calculated, yet smaller, corrections that are currently applied to 0+ -> 0+ transitions for tests of the Standard Model.

Electron-capture branch of 100Tc and tests of nuclear wave functions for double-beta decays

We present a measurement of the electron-capture branch of $^{100}$Tc. Our value, $B(\text{EC}) = (2.6 \pm 0.4) \times 10^{-5}$, implies that the $^{100}$Mo neutrino absorption cross section to the ground state of $^{100}$Tc is roughly one third larger than previously thought. Compared to previous measurements, our value of $B(\text{EC})$ prevents a smaller disagreement with QRPA calculations relevant to double-$β$ decay matrix elements.

The 3He + 4He --> 7Be Astrophysical S-factor

We present precision measurements of the 3He + 4He --> 7Be reaction in the range ECM = 0.33 to 1.23 MeV using a small gas cell and detection of both prompt gamma rays and 7Be activity. Our prompt and activity measurements are in good agreement within an experimental uncertainty of several percent. We find S(0) = 0.595 +/- 0.018 keV b from fits of the Kajino theory to our data. We compare our results with published measurements, and we discuss the consequences for Big Bang Nucleosynthesis and for solar neutrino flux calculations.
