Multigap Superconductivity in the Filled-Skutterudite Compound LaRu$_4$As$_{12}$ probed by muon spin rotation

Muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) and inelastic X-ray scattering (IXS) were used to investigate the superconducting properties of the filled-skutterudite compound LaRu$_{4}$As$_{12}$. A two-gap isotropic ($s+s$)-wave model can explain the temperature dependence of the superfluid density. Zero field $μ$SR measurements confirm that the time-reversal symmetry does not break upon entering the superconducting state. The measurements of lattice dynamics at 2, 20 and 300 K revealed temperature dependencies of the phonon modes that do not follow strictly a hardening of phonon frequencies upon cooling as expected within the quasi-harmonic picture. The 20~K data rather mark a turning point for the majority of the phonon frequencies. Indeed a hardening is observed approaching 20~K from above, while for a few branches a weak softening is visible upon further cooling to 2~K. The observed dispersion relations of phonon modes throughout the Brillouin zone matches with the DFT prediction quite closely. Our results point out that cubic LaRu$_{4}$As$_{12}$ is a good reference material for studying multiband superconductivity, including those with lower crystallographic symmetries such as iron arsenide-based superconductors.

Isotropic parallel antiferromagnetism in the magnetic-field-induced charge-ordered state of SmRu$_4$P$_{12}$ caused by $p$-$f$ hybridization

Nature of the field-induced charge ordered phase (phase II) of SmRu$_4$P$_{12}$ has been investigated by resonant x-ray diffraction (RXD) and polarized neutron diffraction (PND), focusing on the relationship between the atomic displacements and the antiferromagnetic (AFM) moments of Sm. From the analysis of the interference between the non-resonant Thomson scattering and the resonant magnetic scattering, combined with the spectral function obtained from x-ray magnetic circular dichroism, it is shown that the AFM moment of Sm prefers to be parallel to the field ($m_{\text{AF}} \parallel H$), giving rise to large and small moment sites around which the P$_{12}$ and Ru cage contract and expand, respectively. This is associated with the formation of the staggered ordering of the $Γ_7$-like and $Γ_8$-like crystal-field states, providing a strong piece of evidence for the charge order. PND was also performed to obtain complementary and unambiguous conclusion. In addition, isotropic and continuous nature of the phase II is demonstrated by the field-direction invariance of the interference spectrum in RXD. Crucial role of the $p$-$f$ hybridization is shown by resonant soft x-ray diffraction at the P $K$-edge ($1s\leftrightarrow 3p$), where we detected a resonance due to the spin polarized $3p$ orbitals reflecting the AFM order of Sm.

Detection of collective optic excitations in molten NaI

High-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering measurements were carried out on molten NaI near the melting point at 680$^\circ$C at SPring-8. Small and damped indications of longitudinal optic excitation modes were observed on the tails of the longitudinal acoustic modes at small momentum transfers, $Q\sim5$ nm$^{-1}$. The measured spectra are in good agreement, in both frequency and linewidth, with {\it ab initio} molecular dynamics (MD) simulations but not classical MD simulations. The observation of these modes at small $Q$ and a good agreement with the simulation permits clear identification of these as collective optic modes with well defined phasing between different ionic motions.

Evidence of a structural quantum critical point in (Ca$_{x}$Sr$_{1-x}$)$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$ from a lattice dynamics study

Approaching a quantum critical point (QCP) has been an effective route to stabilize superconductivity. While the role of magnetic QCPs has been extensively discussed, similar exploration of a structural QCP is scarce due to the lack of suitable systems with a continuous structural transition that can be conveniently tuned to 0~K. Using inelastic X-ray scattering, we examine the phonon spectrum of the nonmagnetic quasi-skutterudite (Ca$_{x}$Sr$_{1-x}$)$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$, which represents a precious system to explore the interplay between structural instabilities and superconductivity by tuning the Ca concentration $x$. We unambiguously detect the softening of phonon modes around the M point on cooling towards the structural transition. Intriguingly, at $x=0.85$, the soft mode energy squared at the M point extrapolates to zero at $(-5.7 \pm 7.7)$~K, providing the first compelling microscopic evidence of a structural QCP in (Ca$_{x}$Sr$_{1-x}$)$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$. The enhanced phonon density-of-states at low energy provides the essential ingredient for realizing strong-coupling superconductivity near the structural QCP.

Effect of magnetism on lattice dynamics in SrFe$_2$As$_2$ as seen via high resolution inelastic x-ray scattering

Phonon spectra of detwinned {SrFe$_2$As$_2$} crystals, as measured by inelastic x-ray scattering, show clear anisotropy accompanying the magneto-structural transition at 200 K. We model the mode splitting using magnetic DFT calculations, including a phenomenological reduction in force-constant anisotropy that can be attributed to magnetic fluctuations. This serves as a starting point for a general model of phonons in this material applicable to both magnetic and non-magnetic phase. Using this model, the measured splitting in the magnetic phase below $\it T_{N}$, and the measured phonon linewidth, we set a lower bound on the mean magnetic fluctuation frequency above $\it T_{N}$ at 210 K.

Low-Energy Optical Phonon Modes in the Caged Compound LaRu2Zn20

The caged compound LaRu2Zn20 exhibits a structural transition at TS =150 K, whose driving mechanism remains elusive. We have investigated atomic dynamics by the measurements of specific heat C and inelastic X-ray scattering (IXS). The lattice part of the specific heat Clat divided by T3, Clat/T3, shows a broad peak at around 15 K, which is reproduced by two Einstein modes with characteristic temperatures of 35 K and 82 K, respectively. IXS measurements along the [111] and [110] directions reveal optical phonon modes at 3 meV (35 K) and 7 meV (80 K), respectively, whose values agree with the values of Einstein temperatures. The first principles calculation has assigned the phonon modes at 3 meV as the optical modes of Zn atoms located at the middle of two La atoms. The low-energy vibration of the Zn atom perpendicular to the there-fold axis is thought to lead the structural instability of LaRu2Zn20.

Synchrotron x-ray study of lattice vibrations in CdCr2O4

Using inelastic x-ray scattering we have investigated lattice vibrations in a geometric frustrated system CdCr2O4 that upon cooling undergoes a spin-Peierls phase transition at TN = 7.8 K from a cubic and paramagnetic to a tetragonal and Neel state. Phonon modes measured around Brillouin zone boundaries show energy shifts when the transition occurs. Our analysis shows that the shifting can be understood as the ordinary effects of the lowering of the crystal symmetry.

Effects of Anisotropic Charge on Transverse Optical Phonons in NiO

Phonon dispersion of detwinned NiO is measured using inelastic x-ray scattering. It is found that, near the zone center, the energy of the transverse optical phonon mode polarized parallel to the antiferromagnetic order is ~1 meV lower than that of the mode polarized perpendicular to the order, at room temperature. This is explained via anisotropic polarization of the Ni and O atoms, as confirmed using a Berry's phase approach with first-principles calculations. Our explanation avoids an apparent contradiction in previous discussions focusing on Heisenberg interaction.

Lattice Dynamics of LaFeAsO_{1-x}F_{x} and PrFeAsO_{1-y} via Inelastic X-Ray Scattering and First-Principles Calculation

The lattice dynamics of LaFeAsO_{1-x}F_{x} (x=0, 0.1) and PrFeAsO_{1-y} (y~0.1) are investigated using inelastic x-ray scattering and ab-initio calculation. Measurements of powder samples provide an approximation to the phonon DOS, while dispersion is measured from a single crystal of PrFeAsO_{1-y}. A model that agrees reasonably well with all of the data at room temperature is built from results of ab-initio calculations by softening the strength of the Fe-As bond by 30%.

q-Dependence of the giant bond-stretching phonon anomaly in the stripe compound La1.48Nd0.4Sr0.12CuO4 measured by IXS

Inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS) was used to study the Cu-O bond-stretching vibrations in the static stripe phase compound La1.48Nd0.4Sr0.12CuO4. It was found that the intrinsic width in Q-space of the previously reported huge anomalous phonon softening and broadening is approximately 0.08r.l.u HWHM. A detailed comparison was also made to inelastic neutron scattering (INS) studies, which indicate a two-peak lineshape (with superimposed broad and narrow peaks) in the vicinity of the anomaly. The high resolution IXS data show that the narrow peak is mostly an artifact of the poor transverse Q-resolution of INS. Otherwise the agreement between the INS and IXS was excellent.

Phonon Softening in Superconducting Diamond

We observe strong softening of optical phonon modes in superconducting (Tc = 4.2 K) boron doped diamond near the Brillouin zone center using inelastic x-ray scattering from a CVD-grown highly oriented sample. The magnitude of the softening, and our observation that it becomes stronger approaching zone center, supports theoretical models suggesting a phonon-mediated pairing mechanism via coupling of optical phonon modes to Fermi surfaces around the zone center. The electron-phonon coupling parameter is determined as approximately lambda= 0.33.

Two-phonon contributions to inelastic x-ray scattering spectra of MgB2

Two-phonon contributions to meV-resolved inelastic x-ray scattering spectra of MgB2 at 300K are identified, in good agreement, in both intensity and energy, with a harmonic calculation using the force constant matrix from ab-inito LDA calculations. This contribution impacts the determination of the linewidth of the E2g phonon mode that is so important for the high Tc of this material. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first observation of peaks in measurements of phonon dispersion (q>0) due to 2-phonon scattering in a non-rare-gas solid.

Softening of Cu-O bond stretching phonon in tetragonal HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$

Phonons in nearly optimally doped HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ were studied by inelastic X-ray scattering. The dispersion of the low energy modes is well described by a shell model, while the Cu-O bond stretching mode at high energy shows strong softening towards the zone boundary, which deviates strongly from the model. This seems to be common in the hole-doped high-$T_\mathrm{c}$ superconducting cuprates, and, based on this work, not related to a lattice distortion specific to each material.

High frequency dynamics in a monatomic glass

The high frequency dynamics of glassy Selenium has been studied by Inelastic X-ray Scattering at beamline BL35XU (SPring-8). The high quality of the data allows one to pinpoint the existence of a dispersing acoustic mode for wavevectors ($Q$) of $1.5<Q<12.5$ nm$^{-1}$, helping to clarify a previous contradiction between experimental and numerical results. The sound velocity shows a positive dispersion, exceeding the hydrodynamic value by $\approx$ 10% at $Q<3.5$ nm$^{-1}$. The $Q^2$ dependence of the sound attenuation $Γ(Q)$, reported for other glasses, is found to be the low-$Q$ limit of a more general $Γ(Q) \propto Ω(Q)^2$ law which applies also to the higher $Q$ region, where $Ω(Q)\propto Q$ no longer holds.

Kohn Anomaly in MgB2 by Inelastic X-Ray Scattering

We study phonons in MgB2 using inelastic x-ray scattering (1.6 and 6 meV resolution). Our measurements show excellent agreement with theory for the dispersion and line-width: we clearly observe the softening and broadening of the crucial E2g mode through the Kohn anomaly along GM. Low temperature measurements (just above and below Tc) show negligible changes for the momentum-transfers investigated, and no change in the E2g mode at A between room temperature and 16K. We report the presence of a longitudinal mode along GA near in energy to the E2g mode that is not predicted by theory.
