Gauge Covariance and Spin Current Conservation in the Gauge Field Formulation of Systems with Spin-Orbit Coupling

The question of gauge-covariance in the non-Abelian gauge-field formulation of two space-dimensional systems with spin-orbit coupling relevant to spintronics is investigated. Although, these are generally gauge-fixed models, it is found that for the class of gauge fields that are space-time independent and satisfy a U(1) algebra, thus having a vanishing field strength, there is a residual gauge freedom in the Hamiltonian. The gauge transformations assume the form of a space-dependent rotation of the transformed wave functions with rotation angles and axes determined by the specific form of the gauge-field, i.e., the spin-orbit coupling. The fields can be gauged away, reducing the Hamiltonian to one which is isospectral to the free-particle Hamiltonian, and giving rise to the phenomenon of persistent spin helix reported first by B.~A.~Bernevig \emph{et al.} [Phys.~Rev.~Lett. \textbf{97}, 236601 (2006)]. The investigation of the global gauge transformations leads to the derivation of a continuity equation where the component of the spin-density along given directions, again fixed by the specific form of the gauge field, is conserved.

Sure-Success Quantum Algorithms on Weight Decision Problem

Conditions on sure-success decidability of weights of Boolean functions are presented for a given number of generalized Grover iterations. It is shown that the decidability problem reduces to a system of algebraic equations of a single variable. For problems that require a large number of iterations, it is observed that the iteration number of sure-success quantum algorithms scale as the square root of the iteration number of the corresponding classical probabilistic algorithms. It is also demonstrated that for a few iterations, quantum algorithms can be more efficient than this.

Heat Transfer Operators Associated with Quantum Operations

Any quantum operation applied on a physical system is performed as a unitary transformation on a larger extended system. If the extension used is a heat bath in thermal equilibrium, the concomitant change in the state of the bath necessarily implies a heat exchange with it. The dependence of the average heat transferred to the bath on the initial state of the system can then be found from the expectation value of a hermitian operator, which is named as the heat transfer operator (HTO). The purpose of this article is the investigation of the relation between the HTOs and the associated quantum operations. Since, any given quantum operation on a system can be realized by different baths and unitaries, many different HTOs are possible for each quantum operation. On the other hand, there are also strong restrictions on the HTOs which arise from the unitarity of the transformations. The most important of these is the Landauer erasure principle. This article is concerned with the question of finding a complete set of restrictions on the HTOs that are associated with a given quantum operation. An answer to this question has been found only for a subset of quantum operations. For erasure operations, these characterizations are equivalent to the generalized Landauer erasure principle. For the case of generic quantum operations however, it appears that the HTOs obey further restrictions which cannot be obtained from the entropic restrictions of the generalized Landauer erasure principle.

Transformations of $W$-Type Entangled States

The transformations of $W$-type entangled states by using local operations assisted with classical communication are investigated. For this purpose, a parametrization of the $W$-type states which remains invariant under local unitary transformations is proposed and a complete characterization of the local operations carried out by a single party is given. These are used for deriving the necessary and sufficient conditions for deterministic transformations. A convenient upper bound for the maximum probability of distillation of arbitrary target states is also found.

On the Geometric Measures of Entanglement

The geometric measure of entanglement, which expresses the minimum distance to product states, has been generalized to distances to sets that remain invariant under the stochastic reducibility relation. For each such set, an associated entanglement monotone can be defined. The explicit analytical forms of these measures are obtained for bipartite entangled states. Moreover, the three qubit case is discussed and argued that the distance to the W states is a new monotone.

Deterministic Transformations of Multipartite Entangled States with Tensor Rank 2

Transformations involving only local operations assisted with classical communication are investigated for multipartite entangled pure states having tensor rank 2. All necessary and sufficient conditions for the possibility of deterministically converting truly multipartite, rank-2 states into each other are given. Furthermore, a chain of local operations that successfully achieves the transformation has been identified for all allowed transformations. The identified chains have two nice features: (1) each party needs to carry out at most one local operation and (2) all of these local operations are also deterministic transformations by themselves. Finally, it is found that there are disjoint classes of states, all of which can be identified by a single real parameter, which remain invariant under deterministic transformations.

Environmental Effects on the Geometric Phase

The behavior of the geometric phase gained by a single spin-1/2 nucleus immersed into a thermal or a squeezed environment is investigated. Both the time dependence of the phase and its value at infinity are examined against several physical parameters. It is observed that for some intermediate ranges of the temperature and the coupling strength, the presence of squeezing enhances the geometric phase.

Relations between Entropies Produced in Nondeterministic Thermodynamic Processes

Landauer's erasure principle is generalized to nondeterministic processes on systems having an arbitrary number of non-symmetrical logical states. The condition that the process is applied in the same way, irrespective of the initial logical state, imposes some restrictions on the individual heat exchanges associated with each possible transition. The complete set of such restrictions are derived by a statistical analysis of the phase-space flow induced by the process. Landauer's erasure principle can be derived from and is a special case of these.

A(nother) Continuum Model for Dephasing in Mesoscopic Systems

A dephasing model in the spirit of Buttiker's fictitious probe model where infinite probes are distributed uniformly over the conductor is proposed. The dephasing rate enters into the model as an adjustable parameter and to compute the conductance. A one-dimensional delta function scatterer model is solved numerically. We observe the dephasing effects on the calculated conductance.
