Coherent States on Hilbert Modules

We generalize the concept of coherent states, traditionally defined as special families of vectors on Hilbert spaces, to Hilbert modules. We show that Hilbert modules over $C^*$-algebras are the natural settings for a generalization of coherent states defined on Hilbert spaces. We consider those Hilbert $C^*$-modules which have a natural left action from another $C^*$-algebra say, $\mathcal A$. The coherent states are well defined in this case and they behave well with respect to the left action by $\mathcal A$. Certain classical objects like the Cuntz algebra are related to specific examples of coherent states. Finally we show that coherent states on modules give rise to a completely positive kernel between two $C^*$-algebras, in complete analogy to the Hilbert space situation. Related to this there is a dilation result for positive operator valued measures, in the sense of Naimark. A number of examples are worked out to illustrate the theory.

Commutative POVMs and Fuzzy Observables

In this paper we review some properties of fuzzy observables, mainly as realized by commutative positive operator valued measures. In this context we discuss two representation theorems for commutative positive operator valued measures in terms of projection valued measures and describe, in some detail, the general notion of fuzzification. We also make some related observations on joint measurements.

Non-commutative reading of the complex plane through Delone sequences

The Berezin-Klauder-Toeplitz ("anti-Wick") quantization or "non-commutative reading" of the complex plane, viewed as the phase space of a particle moving on the line, is derived from the resolution of the unity provided by the standard (or gaussian) coherent states. The construction properties of these states and their attractive properties are essentially based on the energy spectrum of the harmonic oscillator, that is on the natural numbers. This work is an attempt for following the same path by considering sequences of non-negative numbers which are not "too far" from the natural numbers. In particular, we examine the consequences of such perturbations on the non-commutative reading of the complex plane in terms of its probabilistic, functional, and localization aspects.

Coherent States and Bayesian Duality

We demonstrate how large classes of discrete and continuous statistical distributions can be incorporated into coherent states, using the concept of a reproducing kernel Hilbert space. Each family of coherent states is shown to contain, in a sort of duality, which resembles an analogous duality in Bayesian statistics, a discrete probability distribution and a discretely parametrized family of continuous distributions. It turns out that nonlinear coherent states, of the type widely studied in quantum optics, are a particularly useful class of coherent states from this point of view, in that they contain many of the standard statistical distributions. We also look at vector coherent states and multidimensional coherent states as carriers of mixtures of probability distributions and joint probability distributions.

A matrix-valued Berezin-Toeplitz quantization

We generalize some earlier results on a Berezin-Toeplitz type of quantization on Hilbert spaces built over certain matrix domains. In the present, wider setting, the theory could be applied to systems possessing several kinematic and internal degrees of freedom. Our analysis leads to an identification of those observables, in this general context, which admit a semi-classical limit and those for which no such limit exists. It turns out that the latter class of observables involve the internal degrees of freedom in an intrinsic way. Mathematically, the theory, being a generalization of the standard Berezin-Toeplitz quantization, points the way to applying such a quantization technique to possibly non-commutative spaces, to the extent that points in phase space are now replaced by $N\times N$ matrices.

Berezin-Toeplitz quantization over matrix domains

We explore the possibility of extending the well-known Berezin-Toeplitz quantization to reproducing kernel spaces of vector-valued functions. In physical terms, this can be interpreted as accommodating the internal degrees of freedom of the quantized system. We analyze in particular the vector-valued analogues of the classical Segal-Bargmann space on the domain of all complex matrices and of all normal matrices, respectively, showing that for the former a semi-classical limit, in the traditional sense, does not exist, while for the latter only a certain subset of the quantized observables have a classical limit: in other words, in the semiclassical limit the internal degrees of freedom disappear, as they should. We expect that a similar situation prevails in much more general setups.

Gabor-type Frames from Generalized Weyl-Heisenberg Groups

We present in this paper a construction for Gabor-type frames built out of generalized Weyl-Heisenberg groups. These latter are obtained via central extensions of groups which are direct products of locally compact abelian groups and their duals. Our results generalize many of the results, appearing in the literature, on frames built out of the Schrödinger representation of the standard Weyl-Heisenberg group. In particular, we obtain a generalization of the result in \cite{PO}, in which the product $ab$ determines whether it is possible for the Gabor system $\{E_{mb}T_{na}g \}_{m,n\in \mathbb Z}$ to be a frame for $L^2(\mathbb R)$. As a particular example of the theory, we study in some detail the case of the generalized Weyl-Heisenberg group built out of the $d$-dimensional torus. In the same spirit we also construct generalized shift-invariant systems.

Some Physical Appearances of Vector Coherent States and CS Related to Degenerate Hamiltonians

In the spirit of some earlier work on the construction of vector coherent states over matrix domains, we compute here such states associated to some physical Hamiltonians. In particular, we construct vector coherent states of the Gazeau-Klauder type. As a related problem, we also suggest a way to handle degeneracies in the Hamiltonian for building coherent states. Specific physical Hamiltonians studied include a single photon mode interacting with a pair of fermions, a Hamiltonian involving a single boson and a single fermion, a charged particle in a three dimensional harmonic force field and the case of a two-dimensional electron placed in a constant magnetic field, orthogonal to the plane which contains the electron. In this last example, an interesting modular structure emerges for two underlying von Neumann algebras, related to opposite directions of the magnetic field. This leads to the existence of coherent states built out of KMS states for the system.

Quantization Methods: A Guide for Physicists and Analysts

In this review we attempt to present an overview of some of the better known quantization techniques found in the current literature and used both by physicists and mathematicians. The treatment is more descriptive than rigorous, for we aim to reach both physicists and mathematicians, including non-specialists in the field. It is our hope that an overview such as this will put into perspective the relative successes as well as shortcomings of the various techniques that have been developed and, besides delineating their usefulness in understanding the nature of the quantum regime, will also demonstrate the mathematical richness of the attendant structures.

Vector Coherent States from Plancherel's Theorem, Clifford Algebras and Matrix Domains

As a substantial generalization of the technique for constructing canonical and the related nonlinear and q-deformed coherent states, we present here a method for constructing vector coherent states in the same spirit. These vector coherent states may have a finite or an infinite number of components. As examples we first apply the technique to construct vector coherent states using the Plancherel isometry for groups and vector coherent states associated to Clifford algebras, in particular quaternions. As physical examples, we discuss vector coherent states for a quantum optical model and finally apply the general technique to build vector coherent states over certain matrix domains.

Representations of Coherent States in Non-orthogonal Bases

Starting with the canonical coherent states, we demonstrate that all the so-called nonlinear coherent states, used in the physical literature, as well as large classes of other generalized coherent states, can be obtained by changes of bases in the underlying Hilbert space. This observation leads to an interesting duality between pairs of generalized coherent states, bringing into play a Gelfand triple of (rigged) Hilbert spaces. Moreover, it is shown that in each dual pair of families of nonlinear coherent states, at least one family is related to a (generally) non-unitary projective representation of the Weyl-Heisenberg group, which can then be thought of as characterizing the dual pair.

A class of vector coherent states defined over matrix domains

A general scheme is proposed for constructing vector coherent states, in analogy with the well-known canonical coherent states, and their deformed versions, when these latter are expressed as infinite series in powers of a complex variable $z$. In the present scheme, the variable $z$ is replaced by a matrix valued function over appropriate domains. As particular examples, we analyze the quaternionic extensions of the the canonical coherent states and the Gilmore-Perelomov and Barut-Girardello coherent states arising from representations of SU(1,1).

Wigner Functions for a Class of Semidirect Product Groups

Following a general method proposed earlier, we construct here Wigner functions defined on coadjoint orbits of a class of semidirect product groups. The groups in question are such that their unitary duals consist purely of representations from the discrete series and each unitary irreducible representation is associated with a coadjoint orbit. The set of all coadjoint orbits (hence UIRs) is finite and their union is dense in the dual of the Lie algebra. The simple structure of the groups and the orbits enables us to compute the various quantities appearing in the definition of the Wigner function explicitly. Possible use of the Wigner functions so constructed, in image analysis and quantum optical measurements, is suggested.

Plancherel Inversion as Unified Approach to Wavelet Transforms and Wigner functions

We demonstrate that the Plancherel transform for Type-I groups provides one with a natural, unified perspective for the generalized continuous wavelet transform, on the one hand, and for a class of Wigner functions, on the other. The wavelet transform of a signal is an $L^2$-function on an appropriately chosen group, while the Wigner function is defined on a coadjoint orbit of the group and serves as an alternative characterization of the signal, which is often used in practical applications. The Plancherel transform maps $L^2$-functions on a group unitarily to fields of Hilbert-Schmidt operators, indexed by unitary irreducible representations of the group. The wavelet transform can essentiallly be looked upon as restricted inverse Plancherel transform, while Wigner functions are modified Fourier transforms of inverse Plancherel transforms, usually restricted to a subset of the unitary dual of the group. Some known results both on Wigner functions and wavelet transforms, appearing in the literature from very different perspectives, are naturally unified within our approach. Explicit computations on a number of groups illustrate the theory.
