First measurement of the Q^2 distribution of X(3915) single-tag two-photon production

We report the first measurement of the $Q^2$ distribution of $X(3915)$ produced by single-tag two-photon interactions. The decay mode used is $X(3915) \rightarrow J/ψω$. The covered $Q^2$ region is from 1.5 (GeV/$c$)$^2$ to 10.0 (GeV/$c$)$^2$. We observe $7.9\pm 3.1({\rm stat.})\pm 1.5({\rm syst.})$ events, where we expect $4.1\pm 0.7$ events based on the $Q^2=0$ result from the no-tag two-photon process, extrapolated to higher $Q^2$ region using the $c\bar{c}$ model of Schuler, Berends, and van Gulik. The shape of the distribution is also consistent with this model; we note that statistical uncertainties are large.

Measurement of two-photon decay width of $χ_{c2}(1P)$ in $ γγ\rightarrow χ_{c2}(1P) \rightarrow J/ψγ$ at Belle

We report the measurement of the two-photon decay width of $χ_{c2}(1P)$ in two-photon processes at the Belle experiment. We analyze the process $ γγ\rightarrow χ_{c2}(1P) \rightarrow J/ψγ$, $J/ψ\rightarrow \ell^{+} \ell^{-}$ $(\ell = e \ {\rm or} \ μ)$ using a data sample of 971 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^{+} e^{-}$ collider. In this analysis, the product of the two-photon decay width of $χ_{c2}(1P)$ and the branching fraction is determined to be $Γ_{γγ}(χ_{c2}(1P)) \mathcal{B}( χ_{c2}(1P) \rightarrow J/ψ\, γ)\mathcal{B}( J/ψ\rightarrow \ell^+\ell^- ) = {\rm 14.8}$ $\pm$ ${\rm 0.3}({\rm stat.})$ $\pm$ ${\rm 0.7}({\rm syst.})$ eV, which corresponds to $ Γ_{γγ}(χ_{c2}(1P)) $ = 653 $\pm$ 13(stat.) $\pm$ 31(syst.) $\pm$ 17(B.R.) eV, where the third uncertainty is from $\mathcal{B}( χ_{c2}(1P) \rightarrow J/ψ\, γ)$ and $\mathcal{B}( J/ψ\rightarrow \ell^+\ell^- )$.

Evidence for $X(3872)\rightarrow J/ψπ^+π^-$ produced in single-tag two-photon interactions

We report the first evidence for $X(3872)$ production in two-photon interactions by tagging either the electron or the position in the final state, exploring the highly virtual photon region. The search is performed in $e^+e^- \rightarrow e^+e^-J/ψπ^+π^-$, using 825 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected by the Belle detector operated at the KEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. We observe three $X(3872)$ candidates with an expected background of $0.11\pm 0.10$ events, with a significance of 3.2$σ$. We obtain an estimated value for $\tildeΓ_{γγ}{\cal B}(X(3872)\rightarrow J/ψπ^+π^-$) assuming the $Q^2$ dependence predicted by a $c\bar{c}$ meson model, where $-Q^2$ is the invariant mass-squared of the virtual photon. No $X(3915)\rightarrow J/ψπ^+π^-$ candidates are found.

The Monitoring System of the End-Cap Calorimeter in the Belle II experiment

The Belle II experiment is presently in phase-2 operation at the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider in KEK (Tsukuba, Japan). The detector is an upgrade of the Belle experiment at the KEKB collider and it is optimized for the study of rare B decays, being also sensitive to signals of New Physics beyond the Standard Model. The Electromagnetic Calorimeter (ECL) is based on CsI(Tl) scintillation crystals. It splits in a barrel and two annular end-cap regions, these latter named Forward and Backward, according to the asymmetric design of the collider. CsI(Tl) crystals deliver a high light output at an affordable cost, however their yield changes with temperature and can be permanently damaged by humidity, due to the strong chemical affinity for moisture. Each ECL region is then equipped with thermistors and humidity probes to monitor environmental data. While sensors and cabling have been inherited from the original Belle design, the ECL monitoring system has been fully redesigned. In this paper, we present hardware and software architecture deployed for the 2112 CsI(Tl) crystals arranged in the Forward and Backward end-caps. Single-Board Computers (SBCs) have been designed ad-hoc for embedded applications. For sensor read-out, a data-acquisition system based on 24-bit ADCs with local processing capability has been realized and interfaced with the SBCs. EPICS applications send data across the Local Area Network for remote control and display.

Study of $K^0_S$ pair production in single-tag two-photon collisions

We report a measurement of the cross section for $K^0_S$ pair production in single-tag two-photon collisions, $γ^* γ\to K^0_S K^0_S$, for $Q^2$ up to 30 GeV$^2$, where $Q^2$ is the negative of the invariant mass squared of the tagged photon. The measurement covers the kinematic range 1.0 GeV < W < 2.6 GeV and $|\cos θ^*| < 1.0$ for the total energy and kaon scattering angle, respectively, in the $γ^* γ$ center-of-mass system. These results are based on a data sample of 759 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. For the first time, the transition form factor of the $f_2'(1525)$ meson is measured separately for the helicity-0, -1, and -2 components and also compared with theoretical calculations. Finally, the partial decay widths of the $χ_{c0}$ and $χ_{c2}$ mesons are measured as a function of $Q^2$.

Study of $π^0$ pair production in single-tag two-photon collisions

We report a measurement of the differential cross section of $π^0$ pair production in single-tag two-photon collisions, $γ^* γ\to π^0 π^0$, in $e^+ e^-$ scattering. The cross section is measured for $Q^2$ up to 30 GeV$^2$, where $Q^2$ is the negative of the invariant mass squared of the tagged photon, in the kinematic range 0.5 GeV < W < 2.1 GeV and $|\cos θ^*|$ < 1.0 for the total energy and pion scattering angle, respectively, in the $γ^* γ$ center-of-mass system. Part A of this book contains a brief description of the SLAC and KEK B Factories as well as their detectors, BaBar and Belle, and data taking related issues. Part B discusses tools and methods used by the experiments in order to obtain results. The results themselves can be found in Part C. Please note that version 3 on the archive is the auxiliary version of the Physics of the B Factories book. This uses the notation alpha, beta, gamma for the angles of the Unitarity Triangle. High-statistics study of K^0_S pair production in two-photon collisions

We report a high-statistics measurement of the differential cross section of the process gamma gamma --> K^0_S K^0_S in the range 1.05 GeV <= W <= 4.00 GeV, where W is the center-of-mass energy of the colliding photons, using 972 fb^{-1} of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+ e^- collider operated at and near the Upsilon-resonance region. The differential cross section is fitted by parameterized S-, D_0-, D_2-, G_0- and G_2-wave amplitudes. In the D_2 wave, the f_2(1270), a_2(1320) and f_2'(1525) are dominant and a resonance, the f_2(2200), is also present. The f_0(1710) and possibly the f_0(2500) are seen in the S wave. The mass, total width and product of the two-photon partial decay width and decay branching fraction to the K bar{K} state Gamma_{gamma gamma}B(K bar{K}) are extracted for the f_2'(1525), f_0(1710), f_2(2200) and f_0(2500). The destructive interference between the f_2(1270) and a_2(1320) is confirmed by measuring their relative phase. The parameters of the charmonium states chi_{c0} and chi_{c2} are updated. Possible contributions from the chi_{c0}(2P) and chi_{c2}(2P) states are discussed. A new upper limit for the branching fraction of the P- and CP-violating decay channel eta_c --> K^0_S K^0_S is reported. The detailed behavior of the cross section is updated and compared with QCD-based calculations.

Measurement of gamma gamma* --> pi0 transition form factor at Belle

We report a measurement of the process gamma gamma* --> pi0 with a 759 fb^{-1} data sample recorded with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. The pion transition form factor, F(Q^2), is measured for the kinematical region 4 GeV^2 <~ Q^2 <~ 40 GeV^2, where -Q^2 is the invariant mass squared of a virtual photon. The measured values of Q^2|F(Q^2)| agree well with the previous measurements below Q^2 ~= 9 GeV^2 but do not exhibit the rapid growth in the higher Q^2 region seen in another recent measurement, which exceeds the asymptotic QCD expectation by as much as 50%.

First study of η_c, η(1760) and X(1835) production via η'π^+π^- final states in two-photon collisions

The invariant mass spectrum of the η' π^+ π^- final state produced in two-photon collisions is obtained using a 673 fb^{-1} data sample collected in the vicinity of the Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+e^- collider. We observe a clear signal of the η_c and measure its mass and width to be M(η_c)=(2982.7 +- 1.8(stat) +- 2.2(syst) +- 0.3(model)) MeV/c^2 and Γ(η_c) = (37.8^{+5.8}_{-5.3}(stat) +- 2.8(syst) +- 1.4(model)) MeV/c^2. The third error is an uncertainty due to possible interference between the η_c and a non-resonant component. We also report the first evidence for η(1760) decay to η' π^+ π^-; we find two solutions for its parameters, depending on the inclusion or not of the X(1835), whose existence is of marginal significance in our data. From a fit to the mass spectrum using coherent X(1835) and η(1760) resonant amplitudes, we set a 90% confidence level upper limit on the product Γ_{γγ} \BR (η' π^+ π^-) for the X(1835).

Search for CP violation in tau -> K^0_S pi nu_tau decays at Belle

We report on a search for CP violation in tau -> K^0_S pi nu_tau decays using a data sample of 699 fb^{-1} collected in the Belle experiment at the KEKB electron-positron asymmetric-energy collider. The CP asymmetry is measured in four bins of the invariant mass of the K^0_S pi system and found to be compatible with zero with a precision of O(10^{-3}) in each mass bin. Limits for the CP violation parameter Im(eta_S) are given at a 90 % confidence level. These limits are |Im(eta_S)|<0.026 or better, depending on the parameterization used to describe the hadronic form factors and improve upon previous limits by one order of magnitude.

Observation of transverse polarization asymmetries of charged pion pairs in e+e- annihilation near sqrt s=10.58 GeV

The interference fragmentation function translates the fragmentation of a quark with a transverse projection of the spin into an azimuthal asymmetry of two final-state hadrons. In e+e- annihilation the product of two interference fragmentation functions is measured. We report nonzero asymmetries for pairs of charge-ordered pi+pi- pairs, which indicate a significant interference fragmentation function in this channel. The results are obtained from a 672 fb-1 data sample that contains 711 \times 106 pi+pi- pairs and was collected at and near the ?(4S) resonance, with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider.

Measurement of eta eta production in two-photon collisions

We report the first measurement of the differential cross section for the process gamma gamma --> eta eta in the kinematic range above the eta eta threshold, 1.096 GeV < W < 3.8 GeV over nearly the entire solid angle range, |cos theta*| <= 0.9 or <= 1.0 depending on W, where W and theta* are the energy and eta scattering angle, respectively, in the gamma gamma center-of-mass system. The results are based on a 393 fb^{-1} data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e^+ e^- collider. In the W range 1.1-2.0 GeV/c^2 we perform an analysis of resonance amplitudes for various partial waves, and at higher energy we compare the energy and the angular dependences of the cross section with predictions of theoretical models and extract contributions of the chi_{cJ} charmonia.

KEKB Beam Collision Stability at the Picosecond Timing and Micron Position Resolution as observed with the Belle Detector

Using the Belle detector we study the characteristics of beam collisions at the KEKB 3.5 GeV $e^+$ on 8 GeV $e^-$ asymmetric energy collider. We investigate the collision timing {\tip} and its $z$-coordinate along the beam axis {\zip} as a function of the position of the colliding bunch in a beam train. The various {\tip} and {\zip} behaviors observed by Belle are attributed to beam loading effects in the radio frequency cavities that accelerate the beams with a beam abort gap. We report these results in detail and discuss the prospects for the SuperKEKB collider.

Observation of a charmonium-like enhancement in the gamma gamma --> omega J/psi process

We report the results of a search for a charmonium-like state produced in the process gamma gamma --> omega J/psi in the 3.9-4.2 GeV/c^2 mass region. We observe a significant enhancement, which is well-described by a resonant shape with mass M = (3915 +/- 3 +/- 2) MeV/c^2 and total width Gamma = (17 +/- 10 +/- 3) MeV. This enhancement may be related to one or more of the three charmonium-like states so far reported in the 3.90-3.95 GeV/c^2 mass region.

High-statistics study of ${\boldmath ηπ^0}$ production in two-photon collisions

The differential cross section for the process $γγ\to ηπ^0$ has been measured in the kinematic range $0.84 \GeV < W < 4.0 \GeV$, $|\cos θ^*|<0.8$, where $W$ and $θ^*$ are the energy and $π^0$ (or $η$) scattering angle, respectively, in the $γγ$ center-of-mass system. The results are based on a 223 fb$^{-1}$ data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+ e^-$ collider. Clear peaks due to the $a_0(980)$ and $a_2(1320)$ are visible. The differential cross sections are fitted in the energy region $0.9 \GeV < W < 1.46 \GeV$ to obtain the parameters of the $a_0(980)$. Its mass, width and $Γ_{γγ} \B (ηπ^0)$ are measured to be $982.3 ^{+0.6}_{-0.7} ^{+3.1}_{-4.7} \MeV/c^2$, $75.6 \pm 1.6 ^{+17.4}_{-10.0} \MeV$ and $128 ^{+3}_{-2} ^{+502}_{-43} \eV$, respectively. The energy and angular dependences above 3.1 GeV are compared with those measured in the $π^0 π^0$ channel. The integrated cross section over $|\cos θ^*|<0.8$ has a $W^{-n}$ dependence with $n = 10.5 \pm 1.2 \pm 0.5$, which is slightly larger than that for $π^0 π^0$. The differential cross sections show a $\sin^{-4} θ^*$ dependence similar to $γγ\to π^0 π^0$. The measured cross section ratio, $σ(ηπ^0)/σ(π^0 π^0) = 0.48 \pm 0.05 \pm 0.04$, is consistent with a QCD-based prediction.

High-statistics study of neutral-pion pair production in two-photon collisions

The differential cross sections for the process $γγ\to π^0 π^0$ have been measured in the kinematic range 0.6 GeV $< W < 4.1$ GeV, $|\cos θ^*|<0.8$ in energy and pion scattering angle, respectively, in the $γγ$ center-of-mass system. The results are based on a 223 fb$^{-1}$ data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+ e^-$ collider. The differential cross sections are fitted in the energy region 1.7 GeV $< W <$ 2.5 GeV to confirm the two-photon production of two pions in the G wave. In the higher energy region, we observe production of the $χ_{c0}$ charmonium state and obtain the product of its two-photon decay width and branching fraction to $π^0π^0$. We also compare the observed angular dependence and ratios of cross sections for neutral-pion and charged-pion pair production to QCD models. The energy and angular dependence above 3.1 GeV are compatible with those measured in the $π^+π^-$ channel, and in addition we find that the cross section ratio, $σ(π^0π^0)/σ(π^+π^-)$, is $0.32 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.05$ on average in the 3.1-4.1 GeV region.
