On unconditionality of fractional Rademacher chaos in symmetric spaces

We study density estimates of an index set $\mathcal{A}$, under which unconditionality (or even a weaker property of the random unconditional divergence) of the corresponding Rademacher fractional chaos $\{r_{j_1}(t)\cdot r_{j_2}(t)\cdot\dots\cdot r_{j_d}(t)\}_{(j_1,j_2,\dots,j_d)\in \mathcal{A}}$ in a symmetric space $X$ implies its equivalence in $X$ to the canonical basis in $\ell_2$. In the special case of Orlicz spaces $L_M$, unconditionality of this system is also equivalent to the fact that a certain exponential Orlicz space embeds into $L_M$.

The structure of subspaces in Orlicz spaces between $L^1$ and $L^2$

A subspace $H$ of a rearrangement invariant space $X$ on $[0,1]$ is strongly embedded in $X$ if, in $H$, convergence in $X$-norm is equivalent to convergence in measure. We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions on an Orlicz function $M$, under which the unit ball of an arbitrary strongly embedded subspace in the Orlicz space $L_M$ has equi-absolutely continuous norms in $L_M$.

Symmetric finite representability of $\ell^p$-spaces in rearrangement invariant spaces on $(0,\infty)$

For a separable rearrangement invariant space $X$ on $(0,\infty)$ of fundamental type we identify the set of all $p\in [1,\infty]$ such that $\ell^p$ is finitely represented in $X$ in such a way that the unit basis vectors of $\ell^p$ ($c_0$ if $p=\infty$) correspond to pairwise disjoint and equimeasurable functions. This characterization hinges upon a description of the set of approximate eigenvalues of the doubling operator $x(t)\mapsto x(t/2)$ in $X$. We prove that this set is surprisingly simple: depending on the values of some dilation indices of such a space, it is either an interval or a union of two intervals. We apply these results to the Lorentz and Orlicz spaces.

$L_p+L_\infty$ and $L_p\cap L_\infty$ are not isomorphic for all $1\le p<\infty,$ $p\ne 2$

Isomorphic classification of symmetric spaces is an important problem related to the study of symmetric structures in arbitrary Banach spaces. This research was initiated in the seminal work of Johnson, Maurey, Schechtman and Tzafriri (JMST, 1979). Somewhat later it was extended by Kalton to lattice structures (1993). In particular, in JMST (see also Lindenstrauss-Tzafriri book [1979, Section 2.f]) it was shown that the space $L_2 \cap L_p$ for $2 \leq p < \infty$ (resp. $L_2+L_p$ for $1 < p \leq 2$) is isomorphic to $L_p$. A detailed investigation of various properties of separable sums and intersections of $L_p$-spaces (i.e., with $p<\infty$) was undertaken by Dilworth in the papers from 1988 and 1990. In contrast to that, we focus here on the problem if the nonseparable spaces $L_p +L_{\infty}$ and $L_p \cap L_{\infty}$, $1\le p<\infty$, are isomorphic or not. We prove that these spaces are not isomorphic if $1 \leq p < \infty$, $p \neq 2$. It comes as a consequence of the fact that the space $L_p \cap L_{\infty}$, $1\le p<\infty$, $p\ne 2$, does not contain a complemented subspace isomorphic to $L_p$. In particular, as a subproduct, we show that $L_p \cap L_{\infty}$ contains a complemented subspace isomorphic to $l_2$ if and only if $p = 2$. The problem if $L_2 +L_{\infty}$ and $L_2 \cap L_{\infty}$ are isomorphic or not remains open.

Best constants in Rosenthal-type inequalities and the Kruglov operator

Let $X$ be a symmetric Banach function space on $[0,1]$ with the Kruglov property, and let $\mathbf{f}=\{f_k\}_{k=1}^n$, $n\ge1$ be an arbitrary sequence of independent random variables in $X$. This paper presents sharp estimates in the deterministic characterization of the quantities \[\Biggl\|\sum_{k=1}^nf_k\Biggr\|_X,\Biggl\|\Biggl(\sum_{k=1}^n|f_k|^p\Biggr)^{1/p}\Biggr\|_X,\qquad 1\leq p<\infty,\] in terms of the sum of disjoint copies of individual terms of $\mathbf{f}$. Our method is novel and based on the important recent advances in the study of the Kruglov property through an operator approach made earlier by the authors. In particular, we discover that the sharp constants in the characterization above are equivalent to the norm of the Kruglov operator in $X$.

Kruglov operator and operators defined by random permutations

The Kruglov property and the Kruglov operator play an important role in the study of geometric properties of r.i. function spaces. We prove that the boundedness of the Kruglov operator in a r.i. space is equivalent to the uniform boundedness on this space of a sequence of operators defined by random permutations. It is shown also that there is no minimal r.i. space with the Kruglov property.

Selection of subsystems of random variables equivalent in distribution to the Rademacher system

We present necessary and sufficient conditions on systems of random variables for them to possess a lacunary subsystem equivalent in distribution to the Rademacher system on the segment [0,1]. In particular, every uniformly bounded orthonormal system has this property. Furthermore, an arbitrary finite uniformly bounded orthonormal set of N functions contains a subset of "logarithmic" density equivalent in distribution to the corresponding set of Rademacher functions, with a constant independent of N. A connection between the tail distribution and the L_p-norms of polynomials with respect to systems of random variables exploited. We use also these results to study K-closed representability of some Banach couples.

Rademacher chaos in symmetric spaces,2

It is shown that a specific ordering of the Rademacher chaos leads to a basic sequence in a wide class of symmetric spaces on the segment [0,1]. Necessary and sufficient conditions on a such space are found for Rademacher chaos to possess the unconditionality property.

Rademacher chaos in symmetric spaces

Necessary and sufficient conditions for the equivalence of the Rademacher chaos to the canonical basis of l_2 and also for the complementability of the corresponding generated subspace are derived. In particular, we obtain the unimprovability of the exponential integrability of functions from this space.

Disjointly strictly singular inclusions of symmetric spaces

A condition for the presence of a "gap" between symmetric spaces sufficient for the inclusion of one of these spaces into the other to be disjointly strictly singular is found. This condition is stated in terms of fundamental functions of spaces and is exact in a certain sense. In parallel, necessary and sufficient conditions for an inclusion of Lorentz spaces to be disjointly strictly singular are obtained.

Tensor product in symmetric function spaces

A concept of multiplicator of symmetric function space concerning to projective tensor product is introduced and studied. This allows to obtain some concrete results. In particular, the well-known theorem of R. O'Neil about the boundedness of tensor product in the Lorentz spaces L_{p,q} is discussed.
