Analytical approaches to the study of the phase of the visibility function

In radio interferometric observations, the main source of information is the complex visibility function, which includes amplitude and phase. In this paper, the dependence of the phase of the visibility function on the base projection is investigated when used in radio interferometry with space bases up to six Earth diameters. The dependence of the phase of the visibility function on the projection of the base and direction is obtained. It is shown that for small values of the base projections, this dependence has a universal character and is consistent with the results of numerical magnetohydrodynamic models.

Method for Determining the Parameters of a Ring-like Structure from the Visibility Function Shape

Black hole images obtained by very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) by the Event Horizon Telescope are a new tool for testing general relativity in super-strong gravitational fields. These images demonstrated a ring-like structure which can be explained as the black hole shadow image. To date, there are no reliable methods for determining the parameters of these ring-like structures, such as diameter, width, and asymmetry. In this paper, an algorithm for determining black hole image parameters is proposed using a Gaussian asymmetric ring as an example. Using the proposed method, the diameter and asymmetry parameters of the image of a supermassive black hole in the galaxy M87$^{*}$ were estimated based on observational data obtained by the Event Horizon Telescope group.

The electronic structure of EuPd$_2$Si$_2$ in the vicinity of the critical endpoint

Hard X-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy reveals significant alterations in the valence band states of EuPd$_2$Si$_2$ at a temperature $T_V$, where the Eu ions undergo a temperature-induced valence crossover from a magnetic Eu$^{2+}$ state to a low-temperature valence-fluctuating state. The introduction of small amounts of Au on Pd lattice sites and Ge on Si sites, respectively, results in a decrease in $T_V$ and the emergence of an antiferromagnetic state at low temperatures without valence fluctuations. It has been proposed that the boundary between AFM order and valence crossover represents a first-order phase transition associated with a specific type of second-order critical end point. In this scenario, strong coupling effects between fluctuating charge, spin, and lattice degrees of freedom are to be expected. In the case of EuPd$_2$(Si$_{1-x}$Ge$_x$)$_2$ with x=0.13, which is situated close to the critical end point, a splitting of conduction band states and the emergence of flat bands with one-dimensional character have been observed. A comparison with ab initio theory demonstrates a high degree of correlation with experimental findings, particularly in regard to the bands situated in proximity to the critical end point.

Chirality in the Kagome Metal CsV$_3$Sb$_5$

Using x-ray photoelectron diffraction (XPD) and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we study photoemission intensity changes related to changes in the geometric and electronic structure in the kagome metal CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ upon transition to an unconventional charge density wave (CDW) state. The XPD patterns reveal the presence of a chiral atomic structure in the CDW phase. Furthermore, using circularly polarized x-rays, we have found a pronounced non-trivial circular dichroism in the angular distribution of the valence band photoemission in the CDW phase, indicating a chirality of the electronic structure. This observation is consistent with the proposed orbital loop current order. In view of a negligible spontaneous Kerr signal in recent magneto-optical studies, the results suggest an antiferromagnetic coupling of the orbital magnetic moments along the $c$-axis. While the inherent structural chirality may also induce circular dichroism, the observed asymmetry values seem to be too large in the case of the weak structural distortions caused by the CDW.

Shadows and photon rings of binary black holes

In this paper we present the images of binary black holes using the Majumdar-Papapetrou multiblack hole solution, depending on the parameters of the problem: the mass of black holes, the distance between them, and the inclination of the observer. The images consists of a shadows and photon rings. We find that a photon ring structure appears between black holes. The trajectories of the photons are calculated.

Doping-Induced Electronic and Structural Phase Transition in the Bulk Weyl Semimetal Mo1-xWxTe2

A comprehensive study of the electronic and structural phase transition from 1T` to Td in the bulk Weyl semimetal Mo1-xWxTe2 at different doping concentrations has been carried out using time-of-flight momentum microscopy (including circular and linear dichroism), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray photoelectron diffraction (XPD), X-ray diffraction (XRD), angle-resolved Raman spectroscopy, transport measurements, density functional theory (DFT) and Kikuchi pattern calculations. High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) at 20 K reveals surface electronic states, which are indicative of topological Fermi arcs. Their dispersion agrees with the position of Weyl points predicted by DFT calculations based on the experimental crystal structure of our samples determined by XRD. Raman spectroscopy confirms the inversion symmetry breaking for the Td -phase, which is a necessary condition for the emergence of topological states. Transport measurements show that increasing the doping concentration from 2 to 9% leads to an increase in the temperature of the phase transition from 1T` to Td from 230 K to 270 K. Magnetoresistance and longitudinal elastoresistance show significantly increased values in the Td -phase due to stimulated inter-pocket electron backscattering. The results demonstrate the close relationship between electronic properties and elastic deformations in MoTe2.

Valence-transition-induced changes of the electronic structure in EuPd$_2$Si$_2$

We present results of hard X-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and photoemission diffraction measurements performed on high-quality single crystals of the valence transition compound EuPd$_2$Si$_2$ for temperatures 25~K $\leq$ T $\leq$ 300~K. At low temperatures we observe a Eu $4f$ valence $v=2.5$, % occupation number $n=6.5$, which decreases to $v=2.1$ for temperatures above the valence transition around $T_V \approx 160$~K. The experimental valence numbers resulting from an evaluation of the Eu(III)/Eu(II) $3d$ core levels, are used for calculating band structures using density functional theory. The valence transition significantly changes the band structure as determined by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. In particular, the Eu $5d$ valence bands are shifted to lower binding energies with increasing Eu $4f$ occupancy. To a lesser extent, bands derived from the Si $3p$ and Pd $4d$ orbitals are also affected. This observation suggests a partial charge transfer between Eu and Pd/Si sites. Comparison with {\it ab-initio} theory shows a good agreement with experiment, in particular concerning the unequal band shift with increasing Eu $4f$ occupancy.

On Optimal Geometry for Space Interferometers

This paper examines options for orbit configurations for a space interferometer. In contrast to previously presented concepts for space very long baseline interferometry, we propose a combination of regular and retrograde near-Earth circular orbits in order to achieve a faster filling of $(u,v)$ coverage. With the rapid relative motion of the telescopes, it will be possible to quickly obtain high quality images of supermassive black holes. As a result of such an approach, it will be possible for the first time to conduct high quality studies of the supermassive black hole close surroundings in dynamics.

Control of the asymmetric band structure in Mn2Au by a ferromagnetic driver layer

Hard X-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy reveals the momentum-resolved band structure in an epitaxial Mn2Au(001) film capped by a 2 nm thick ferromagnetic Permalloy layer. By magnetizing the Permalloy capping layer, the exceptionally strong exchange bias aligns the Neel vector in the Mn2Au(001) film accordingly. Uncompensated interface Mn magnetic moments in Mn2Au were identified as the origin of the exchange bias using X-ray magnetic circular dichroism in combination with photoelectron emission microscopy. Using time-of-flight momentum microscopy, we measure the asymmetry of the band structure in Mn2Au resulting from the homogeneous orientation of the Neel vector. Comparison with theory shows that the Neel vector, determined by the magnetic moment of the top Mn layer, is antiparallel to the Permalloy magnetization. The experimental results demonstrate that hard X-ray photoemission spectroscopy can measure the band structure of epitaxial layers beneath a metallic capping layer and corroborate the asymmetric band structure in Mn2Au that was previously inferred only indirectly.

Nonlinear tidal excitation of super-harmonic gravity waves in main-sequence stars in binary and exoplanetary systems

We study the role of nonlinear effects on tidally-excited internal gravity waves in stellar radiation zones in exoplanetary or binary systems. We are partly motivated to study tides due to massive short-period hot Jupiters, which preferentially orbit stars with convective cores, for which wave breaking near the stellar centre cannot operate. We develop a theory (and test it with numerical calculations) for the nonlinear excitation of super-harmonic "secondary" waves (with frequencies $2ω_p$) by a "primary" tidal wave (with frequency $ω_p$) near the interface between the radiation zone and convective envelope. These waves have the same horizontal phase speeds to leading order, and this nonlinear effect could contribute importantly to tidal dissipation if the secondary waves can efficiently damp the primary. We derive criteria involving the orbital and stellar parameters required to excite these secondary waves to large amplitudes using a local model of the radiative/convective interface, which we convert to apply to tides in a spherical star. We numerically evaluate the critical amplitudes required for this new nonlinear effect to become important using stellar models, comparing them to the "conventional" criteria for wave breaking in radiative cores and the application of WKBJ theory near convective cores. The criteria for this new effect are easier to satisfy than the conventional measures of nonlinearity in $1.4$ and $2M_\odot$ stars on the main-sequence. We predict nonlinear effects to be important even for planetary-mass companions around the latter, but this effect is probably less important in stars with radiative cores.

High Resolution Imaging of a Black Hole Shadow with Millimetron Orbit around Lagrange Point L2

Imaging of the shadow around supermassive black hole (SMBH) horizon with a very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) is recognized recently as a powerful tool for experimental testing of Einstein's General relativity. The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) has demonstrated that an Earth-extended VLBI with the maximum long base ($D=10,700$ km) can provide a sufficient angular resolution $θ\sim 20~μ$as at $λ=1.3$ mm ($ν=230$ GHz) for imaging the shadow around SMBH located in the galaxy M87$^\ast$. However, the accuracy of critically important characteristics, such as the asymmetry of the crescent-shaped bright structure around the shadow and the sharpness of a transition zone between the shadow floor and the bright crescent silhouette, both of order $Δθ\sim 4~μ$as, is still to be improved. In our previous paper we have shown that Space-Earth VLBI observation within a joint Millimetron and EHT configuration at the near-Earth high elliptical orbit (HEO) can considerably improve the image quality. Even more solid grounds for firm experimental validation of General relativity can be obtained with a higher resolution available within the joint Millimetron and EHT program at the Lagrangian point L2 in the Sun-Earth system with an expected imaging resolution at 230~GHz of $Δθ\sim 5~μ$as. In this paper we argue that in spite of limitations of L2 orbit, an adequate sparse $(u,v)$ coverage can be achieved and the imaging of the shadows around Sgr A$^\ast$ and M87$^\ast$ can be performed with a reasonable quality.

Zahn's Theory of Dynamical Tides and Its Application to Stars

Zahn's theory of dynamical tides is analyzed critically. We compare the results of this theory with our numerical calculations for stars with a convective core and a radiative envelope and with masses of one and a half and two solar masses. We show that for a binary system consisting of stars of one and a half or two solar masses and a point object with a mass equal to the solar mass and with an orbital period of one day under the assumption of a dense spectrum and moderately rapid dissipation, the evolution time scales of the semimajor axis will be shorter than those in Zahn's theory by several orders of magnitude

Dynamical tides in exoplanetary systems containing Hot Jupiters: confronting theory and observations

We study the effect of dynamical tides associated with the excitation of gravity waves in an interior radiative region of the central star on orbital evolution in observed systems containing Hot Jupiters. We consider WASP-43, Ogle-tr-113, WASP-12, and WASP-18 which contain stars on the main sequence (MS). For these systems there are observational estimates regarding the rate of change of the orbital period. We also investigate Kepler-91 which contains an evolved giant star. We adopt the formalism of Ivanov et al. for calculating the orbital evolution. For the MS stars we determine expected rates of orbital evolution under different assumptions about the amount of dissipation acting on the tides, estimate the effect of stellar rotation for the two most rapidly rotating stars and compare results with observations. All cases apart from possibly WASP-43 are consistent with a regime in which gravity waves are damped during their propagation over the star. However, at present this is not definitive as observational errors are large. We find that although it is expected to apply to Kepler-91, linear radiative damping cannot explain this dis- sipation regime applying to MS stars. Thus, a nonlinear mechanism may be needed. Kepler-91 is found to be such that the time scale for evolution of the star is comparable to that for the orbit. This implies that significant orbital circularisation may have occurred through tides acting on the star. Quasi-static tides, stellar winds, hydrodynamic drag and tides acting on the planet have likely played a minor role.

Change in the Orbital Period of a Binary System Due to Dynamical Tides for Main-Sequence Stars

We investigate the change in the orbital period of a binary system due to dynamical tides by taking into account the evolution of a main-sequence star. Three stars with masses of one, one and a half, and two solar masses are considered. A star of one solar mass at lifetimes $t=4.57\times10^9$ yr closely corresponds to our Sun. We show that a planet of one Jupiter mass revolving around a star of one solar mass will fall onto the star in the main-sequence lifetime of the star due to dynamical tides if the initial orbital period of the planet is less than $P_{\rm orb}\approx2.8$ days. Planets of one Jupiter mass with an orbital period$P_{\rm orb}\approx2$ days or shorter will fall onto a star of one and a half and two solar masses in the mainsequence lifetime of the star.

Spin Mapping of Surface and Bulk Rashba States in Ferroelectric a-GeTe(111) Films

A comprehensive mapping of the spin polarization of the electronic bands in ferroelectric a-GeTe(111) films has been performed using a time-of-flight momentum microscope equipped with an imaging spin filter that enables a simultaneous measurement of more than 10.000 data points (voxels). A Rashba type splitting of both surface and bulk bands with opposite spin helicity of the inner and outer Rashba bands is found revealing a complex spin texture at the Fermi energy. The switchable inner electric field of GeTe implies new functionalities for spintronic devices.

A stochastic quasi-classical wavefunction of the Universe from the third quantization procedure

(abbreviated) We study quantized solutions of WdW equation describing a closed FRW universe with a $Λ$ term and a set of massless scalar fields. We show that when $Λ\ll 1$ in the natural units and the standard $in$-vacuum state is considered, either wavefunction of the universe, $Ψ$, or its derivative with respect to the scale factor, $a$, behave as random quasi-classical fields at sufficiently large values of $a$, when $1 \ll a \ll e^{2\over 3Λ}$ or $a \gg e^{2\over 3Λ}$, respectively. Statistical r.m.s value of the wavefunction is proportional to the Hartle-Hawking wavefunction for a closed universe with a $Λ$ term. Alternatively, the behaviour of our system at large values of $a$ can be described in terms of a density matrix corresponding to a mixed state, which is directly determined by statistical properties of $Ψ$. It gives a non-trivial probability distribution over field velocities. We suppose that a similar behaviour of $Ψ$ can be found in all models exhibiting copious production of excitations with respect to $out$-vacuum state associated with classical trajectories at large values of $a$. Thus, the third quantization procedure may provide a 'boundary condition' for classical solutions of WdW equation.
