Invariant Finite-Difference Schemes for Cylindrical One-Dimensional MHD Flows with Conservation Laws Preservation

On the basis of the recent group classification of the one-dimensional magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations in cylindrical geometry, the construction of symmetry-preserving finite-difference schemes with conservation laws is carried out. New schemes are constructed starting from the classical completely conservative Samarsky-Popov schemes. In the case of finite conductivity, schemes are derived that admit all the symmetries and possess all the conservation laws of the original differential model, including previously unknown conservation laws. In the case of a frozen-in magnetic field (when the conductivity is infinite), various schemes are constructed that possess conservation laws, including those preserving entropy along trajectories of motion. The peculiarities of constructing schemes with an extended set of conservation laws for specific forms of entropy and magnetic fluxes are discussed.

Symmetries and first integrals for variational ODEs with delay

A Lagrangian formalism for variational second-order delay ordinary differential equations (DODEs) is developed. The Noether operator identity for a DODE is established, which relates the invariance of a Lagrangian function with the appropriate variational equations and the conserved quantities. The identity is used to formulate Noether-type theorems that give the first integrals for DODE with symmetries. Relations between the invariance of the variational second-order DODEs and the invariance of the Lagrangian functions are also analyzed. Several examples illustrate the theoretical results.

Group classification of the two-dimensional magnetogasdynamics equations in Lagrangian coordinates

The present paper is devoted to the group classification of magnetogasdynamics equations in which dependent variables in Euler coordinates depend on time and two spatial coordinates. It is assumed that the continuum is inviscid and nonthermal polytropic gas with infinite electrical conductivity. The equations are considered in mass Lagrangian coordinates. Use of Lagrangian coordinates allows reducing number of dependent variables. The analysis presented in this article gives complete group classification of the studied equations. This analysis is necessary for constructing invariant solutions and conservation laws on the base of Noether's theorem.

Symmetries and conservation laws of the one-dimensional shallow water magnetohydrodynamics equations in Lagrangian coordinates

Symmetries of the one-dimensional shallow water magnetohydrodynamics equations (SMHD) in Gilman's approximation are studied. The SMHD equations are considered in case of a plane and uneven bottom topography in Lagrangian and Eulerian coordinates. Symmetry classification separates out all bottom topographies which yields substantially different admitted symmetries. The SMHD equations in Lagrangian coordinates were reduced to a single second order PDE. The Lagrangian formalism and Noether's theorem are used to construct conservation laws of the SMHD equations. Some new conservation laws for various bottom topographies are obtained. The results are also represented in Eulerian coordinates. Invariant and partially invariant solutions are constructed.

Action Principles and Conservation Laws for Chew-Goldberger-Low Anisotropic Plasmas

The ideal CGL plasma equations, including the double adiabatic conservation laws for the parallel ($p_\parallel$) and perpendicular pressure ($p_\perp$), are investigated using a Lagrangian variational principle. An Euler-Poincaré variational principle is developed and the non-canonical Poisson bracket is obtained, in which the non-canonical variables consist of the mass flux ${\bf M}$, the density $ρ$, three entropy variables, $σ=ρS$, $σ_\parallel=ρS_\parallel$, $σ_\perp=ρS_\perp$ ($S_\parallel$ and $S_\perp$ are the two scalar entropy invariants), and the magnetic induction ${\bf B}$. Conservation laws of the CGL plasma equations are derived via Noether's theorem. The Galilean group leads to conservation of energy, momentum, center of mass, and angular momentum. Cross helicity conservation arises from a fluid relabeling symmetry, and is local or nonlocal depending on whether the entropy gradients of $S_\parallel$, $S_\perp$ and $S$ are perpendicular to ${\bf B}$ or otherwise. The point Lie symmetries of the CGL system are shown to comprise the Galilean transformations and scalings.

Group classification of the two-dimensional Green-Naghdi equations with a time dependent bottom topography

The two-dimensional Green-Naghdi equations with uneven bottom topography are studied in this paper. The function defining the bottom topography can be dependent on time. Group classification of these equations with respect to the function describing the topography of the bottom is performed in the paper. The algebraic approach used for the analysis of the classifying equations.

Conservative invariant finite-difference schemes for the modified shallow water equations in Lagrangian coordinates

The one-dimensional modified shallow water equations in Lagrangian coordinates are considered. It is shown the relationship between symmetries and conservation laws in Lagrangian coordinates, in mass Lagrangian variables, and Eulerian coordinates. For equations in Lagrangian coordinates an invariant finite-difference scheme is constructed for all cases for which conservation laws exist in the differential model. Such schemes possess the difference analogues of the conservation laws of mass, momentum, energy, the law of center of mass motion for horizontal, inclined and parabolic bottom topographies. Invariant conservative difference scheme is tested numerically in comparison with naive approximation invariant scheme.

Group analysis approach for finding reciprocal transformations for the two-dimensional stationary gasdynamics

Equivalence transformations play one of the important roles in continuum mechanics. These transformations reduce the original equations to simpler forms. One of the classes of nonlocal equivalence transformations is the class of reciprocal transformations. Despite the long history of applications of such transformations in continuum mechanics, there is no method of obtaining them. Recently such a method was proposed by the second author of the present paper. The method uses group analysis approach and it consists of similar steps as for finding an equivalence group of transformations. The new method provides a systematic tool for finding classes of reciprocal transformations (group of reciprocal transformations). As an illustration, the method was applied to the one-dimensional gas dynamics equations, and new reciprocal transformations were found. Similar to the classical group analysis this approach can be also applied for finding all reciprocal transformations (not only composing a group) of studied equations. The present paper provides this algorithm. As an illustration the method is applied to the two-dimensional stationary gas dynamics equations. Equivalence group, reciprocal equivalence group and completeness of all discrete reciprocal transformations are presented in the paper.

Symmetries, conservation laws and difference schemes of the (1+2)-dimensional shallow water equations in Lagrangian coordinates

The two-dimensional shallow water equations in Eulerian and Lagrangain coordinates are considered. Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalism of the equations is given. The transformations mapping the two-dimensional shallow water equations with a circular or plane bottom into the gas dynamics equations of a polytropic gas with polytropic exponent $γ=2$ is represented. Group properties of the equations are considered, and the group classification for the case of the elliptic paraboloid bottom topography is performed. The properties of the two-dimensional shallow water equations in Lagrangian coordinates are discussed from the discretization point of view. New invariant conservative finite-difference schemes for the equations and their one-dimensional reductions are constructed. The schemes are derived either by extending the known one-dimensional schemes or by direct algebraic construction based on some assumptions on the form of the energy conservation law. Among the proposed schemes there are schemes possessing conservation laws of mass and energy.

Symmetries, conservation laws, invariant solutions and difference schemes of the one-dimensional Green-Naghdi equations

The paper is devoted to the Lie group properties of the one-dimensional Green-Naghdi equations describing the behavior of fluid flow over uneven bottom topography. The bottom topography is incorporated into the Green-Naghdi equations in two ways: in the classical Green-Naghdi form and in the approximated form of the same order. The study is performed in Lagrangian coordinates which allows one to find Lagrangians for the analyzed equations. Complete group classification of both cases of the Green-Naghdi equations with respect to the bottom topography is presented. Applying Noether's theorem, the obtained Lagrangians and the group classification, conservation laws of the one-dimensional Green-Naghdi equations with uneven bottom topography are obtained. Difference schemes which preserve the symmetries of the original equations and the conservation laws are constructed. Analysis of the developed schemes is given. The schemes are tested numerically on the example of an exact traveling-wave solution.

Analysis of the One-dimensional Euler-Lagrange equation of continuum mechanics with a Lagrangian of a special form

Flows of one-dimensional continuum in Lagrangian coordinates are studied in the paper. Equations describing these flows are reduced to a single Euler-Lagrange equation which contains two undefined functions. Particular choices of the undefined functions correspond to isentropic flows of an ideal gas, different forms of the hyperbolic shallow water equations. Complete group classification of the equation with respect to these functions is performed. Using Noether's theorem, all conservation laws are obtained. Their analogs in Eulerian coordinates are given.

Conservation Laws of the Two-Dimensional Gas Dynamics Equations

Two-dimensional gas dynamics equations in mass Lagrangian coordinates are studied in this paper. The equations describing these flows are reduced to two Euler-Lagrange equations. Using group classification and Noether's theorem, conservation laws are obtained. Their counterparts in Eulerian coordinates are given. Among these counterparts there are new conservation laws.

Group analysis of the Fourier transform of the spatially homogeneous and isotropic Boltzmann equation with a source term

The paper is devoted to group analysis of the spatially homogeneous and isotropic Boltzmann equation with a source term. In fact, the Fourier transform of the Boltzmann equation with respect to the molecular velocity variable is considered. Using a particular class of solutions, the determining equation for the admitted Lie group is reduced to a partial differential equation for the source function. The latter equation is analyzed by an algebraic method. A complete group classification of the Fourier transform of the Boltzmann equation is given. All invariant solutions of this equation are also presented in the paper.

Application of Group Analysis to Classification of Systems of Three Second-Order Ordinary Differential Equations

Here we give a complete group classification of the general case of linear systems of three second-order ordinary differential equations excluding the case of systems which are studied in the literature. This is given as the initial step in the study of nonlinear systems of three second-order ordinary differential equations. In addition the complete group classification of a system of three linear second-order ordinary differential equations is done. Four cases of linear systems of equations are obtained.

Applications of tangent transformations to the linearization problem of fourth-order ordinary differential equations

Linearization problem of ordinary differential equations by a new set of tangent transformations is considered in the paper. This set of transformations allows one to extend the set of transformations applied for the linearization problem. Criteria for fourth-order ordinary differential equations to be linearizable are obtained in a particular case; a linearization test and procedure for obtaining the linearizing transformations are provided in explicit forms.

On the Group Classification of Systems of Two Linear Second-Order Ordinary Differential Equations with Constant Coefficients

The completeness of the group classification of systems of two linear second-order ordinary differential equations with constant coefficients is delineated in the paper. The new cases extend what has been done in the literature. These cases correspond to the type of equations where the commutative property of the coefficient matrices with respect to the dependent variables and the first-order derivatives in the considered system does not hold. A discussion of the results as well as a note on the extension to linear systems of second-order ordinary differential equations with more than two equations are given.
