Bromine-methanol etching of semiconductor crystals $Cd_{1-x}Zn_{x}Te_{1-y}Se_{y}$ with different selenium concentrations

The effect of the selenium concentration in the composition of the $Cd_{1-x}Zn_{x}Te_{1-y}Se_{y}$ semiconductor crystals on their etching with a bromine-methanol solution was studied. A thermodynamic model is proposed to describe the degree of etching of $Cd_{1-x}Zn_{x}Te$ and $Cd_{1-x}Zn_{x}Te_{1-y}Se_{y}$ crystals. A thermodynamic law is obtained for the first time to describe the change in the etching rate of $Cd_{1-x}Zn_{x}Te_{1-y}Se_{y}$ crystals with different selenium concentrations. Experimental dependencies are constructed for etching trajectories and etching rates with 5% bromine-methanol solutions of $Cd_{1-x}Zn_{x}Te_{1-y}Se_{y}$ crystal samples with nominal $x\sim 0.1$ and selenium concentrations of $y=0$, $y=0.02$, $y=0.06$, and $y=0.1$. The average etching rates were 24${μ}$m/min, 18${μ}$m/min, 15${μ}$m/min, and 13${μ}$m/min. The threshold effect of a strong decrease in the etching rate upon transition from ternary $Cd_{1-x}Zn_{x}Te$ to quaternary $Cd_{1-x}Zn_{x}Te_{1-y}Se_{y}$ crystals, associated with hardening of the crystal structure, is identify and theoretically explained. The obtained experimental data are in good agreement with the theoretical estimates and will be useful for choosing the optimal regimes of crystal treatment.

Quaternary crystals CdZnTeSe: Growth via the vertical Bridgman method with different compositions of raw materials

Indium-doped semiconductor crystals CdZnTeSe with several different compositions of raw materials were grown via the vertical Bridgman method under high-pressure argon. For the first time, these crystals were obtained via a combined method from a mixture of simple and binary starting components. A theoretical analysis of the permissible reactions for obtaining multicomponent CdZnTeSe crystals from different compositions of starting materials was performed. The homogeneity of the distribution of the atomic composition and electrical resistance (in the dark and under illumination) of the obtained crystals was studied. Crystals grown via the new combined method presented the best homogeneity of composition and electrophysical properties.

The effect of cerium doping and rate of crystallization on the microstructure of the Al2O3/YAG eutectic composite

Eutectics of Sapphire/Yttrium-Aluminum garnet and Ce-doped Sapphire/Yttrium-Aluminum garnet (Ce up to 1 at.%) with a Chinese script microstructure were obtained by the method of horizontal directional crystallization in a carbon-containing reducing atmosphere based on argon gas. The effects of the pooling rate and Ce-dopant concentration on the microstructure of the eutectic were studied by the modified chord method. The deviation of the dependence of the characteristic eutectic distance on the pooling rate from the Jackson-Hunt model has been established. A change in the pathway for restructuring the structure of the doped eutectic at a certain critical pooling rate was revealed, which may indicate that the development of morphological instability of the crystallization front is carried out as a two-stage process. The conditions for obtaining doped eutectic of high homogeneity have been established. It was shown that increasing cerium ion concentration causes an increase in the structure parameters and its value deviation. Intensive formation of the third phase occurred when the limit of cerium ion concentration was exceeded.

Shift of Infrared Absorption and Emission Spectra of Transition Metal Ions in Solid Solutions of Semiconductor Compounds

A universal theoretical model is proposed that explains the observed shift of IR absorption and emission bands in the spectra of transition metal ions in solid solutions of semiconductor compounds. The model has been used for estimating the long-wavelength shift of luminescence bands in the spectra of semiconductor solid solutions with increasing concentration in application to crystals of the ternary systems ZnMgSe(Cr2+) and CdMnTe(Fe2+). Description of the phenomenon is generalized to the case of multicomponent solid solutions.

Improved efficiency of planar light converters based on Al2O3-YAG:Ce eutectic crystals: Physical Trends and Limits

A theoretical model of a crystalline converter of white light with internal scattering medium is proposed. Obtained are the expressions for estimation of the light converter efficiency depending on its optical parameters (refractive index and coefficients of absorption at the wavelengths of the incident and re-emitted light), as well as on the geometrical dimensions and the scattering indicatrix of the optical system. The physical limits of improvement of the converter efficiency due to strong internal scattering, are established. Realized are the theoretical and experimental estimations of the efficiency of the light converter based on the crystals of Al2O3-YAG:Ce eutectic alloy which amounts to 16%. This is twice as high in comparison with the efficiency of the light converter based on YAG:Ce single crystal.

Complex light with optical singularities induced by nanocomposites

The nonocomposites on the base of long (5-10 $μ$m, ${o}$-MWCNTs) and short (2 $μ$m, ${m}$-MWCNTs) multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) hosted by nematic 5CB were investigated in details by means of polarizing microscopy, studies of electrical conductivity and electro-optical behaviour. The spontaneous self-organization of MWCNTs was observed and investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The simple Smoluchowski approach was used for estimation of the half-time of aggregation. It was shown that aggregation process includes two different stages: fast, resulting in formation of loose aggregates (${L}$-aggregates) and slow, resulting in formation of compacted aggregates (${C}$-aggregates). Both ${L}$- and ${C}$- aggregates possess extremely ramified fractal borders. Formation of the percolation structures was observed for ${o}$-MWCNTs at $C=C_p\approx$ 0.0025-0.05 % wt and for $m$-MWCNTs at $C=C_p\approx$ 0.005-0.25 % wt. A physical model describing formation of $C$-aggregates with captured 5CB molecules inside was proposed. It shows good agreement with experimentally measured characteristics. It was shown that MWCNTs strongly affect the structural organization of LC molecules captured inside the MWCNT skeleton and of interfacial LC layers in the vicinity of aggregate borders. Moreover, the structure of the interfacial layer, as well as its birefringence, drastically changed when the applied electric voltage exceeded the Freedericksz threshold. Finally, formation of the inversion walls between branches of the neighbouring MWCNT aggregates was observed and discussed for the first time.

Detection of organic materials by spectrometric radiography method

In this paper we report a spectrometric approach to dual-energy digital radiography that has been developed and applied to identify specific organic substances and discern small differences in their effective atomic number. An experimental setup has been designed, and a theoretical description proposed based on the experimental results obtained. The proposed method is based on application of special reference samples made of materials with different effective atomic number and thickness, parameters known to affect X-ray attenuation in the low-energy range. The results obtained can be used in the development of a new generation of multi-energy customs or medical X-ray scanners.

X-ray multi-energy radiography with scintillator-photodiode detectors

For reconstruction of the spatial structure of many-component objects, it is proposed to use multi-radiography with detection of X-ray by combined detector arrays using detectors of ``scintillator-photodiode'' type. A theoretical model has been developed of multi-energy radiography for thickness measurements of multi-layered systems and systems with defects. Experimental studies of the sensitivity, output signal of various inspection systems based on scintillators $ZnSe(Te)$ and $CsI(Tl)$, and object image reconstruction (with organics and non-ogranics materials singled out) have been carried out.

For reconstruction of the spatial structure and thicknesses of complex objects and materials, it is proposed to use multi-radiography with detection of X-ray or gamma-radiation by combined detector arrays of scintillator-photodiode type. Experimental studies have been carried out of the energy dependence of sensitivity of dual-energy inspection systems based on scintillators $ZnSe(Te)$ and $CsI(Tl)$.

New Scenario to Chaos Transition in the Mappings with Discontinuities

We consider a many-parametric piecewise mapping with discontinuity. That is a one dimensional model of singular dynamic system. The stability boundary are calculated analytically and numerically. New typical features of stable cycle structures and scenario to chaos transition provoked by discontinuity are found.

Scintillator-photodiode type detectors for multi-energy scanning introscopy

Results of experimental studies of detector arrays S-PD (scintillator-photodiode) and PRD (scintillator-photoreceiving device) used for X-ray digital radiography have shown that there exist further possibilities to increase spatial resolution of this system up to 2-3 line pairs per mm. Theoretical analysis and experimental studies show that the two-energy detection method not only allows one to detect organics on the background of metal, but also substantially increases (by 3-5 times) the detection ability of the system as a whole, especially if parameters of the S-PD pair are optimized, in particular, when ZnSe(Te) is used in the low-energy circuit. A possibility to distinguish, in principle, between substances with insignificant differences in atomic number has been theoretically proven -- by transition to multi-energy radiography. 3D-imaging has been realized using S-PD detector arrays.

X-Ray Multi-Energy Introscopy Systems with New Semiconductor Scintillators

Theoretical background and data on the ways of practical realization are presented, related to the problem of detection of dangerous organic objects (explosives, drugs, etc.) in the presence of other organic substances with atomic number differing by no more than 20-30%. For this purpose, multi-energy X-ray introscopy is used. It has been shown that the "weakest link" in the existing multi-energy introscopes used for safety inspection and medicine are detectors of ionizing radiation. In particular, critical is the type of scintillator used in the low-energy detection subsystem. Data are presented on design principles and properties of combined detectors based on a new type of semiconductor scintillators (SCS) -- $ZnSe(Te,O)$, with conversion efficiency of 19-22%, afterglow level less then $0.05 %$ after $10 ms$, and radiation stability up to $500 Mrad$. Results are given on the practical use of experimental samples of the low-energy detector subsystem based on the new SCS material in two-energy introscopes of the 4th and 5th generation.

Multi-energy techniques for radiographic monitoring of chemical composition

A theoretical model of multi-energy radiography (MER) are proposed. It is shown that, as distinct from the conventional radiography, MER allows identification of organic substances and control of their chemical composition. Broad prospects are noted for MER application, specifically, for detection of prohibited substances (explosives, drugs, etc.) during customs and anti-terrorist safety inspection.

Outlook for development of a scintielectron detector with improved energy resolution

The development prospects have been considered of a scintillator-photodiode type detector with improved energy resolution attaining several per cent ($R=1-2%$). The main contributions to the scintielectron detector energy resolution have been analyzed theoretically and their theoretical and physical limits determined. Experimental data have been presented on properties of scintillators of promise confirming the possibilities to minimize each of the resolution components. New ways are proposed to optimize the detector statistical contribution and the scintillator intrinsic resolution. A special role of the latter is outlined as the critical factor for the spectrometric possibilities (threshold) of scintillation-photodiode type detector with improved energy resolution at energy values $E_γ$ from $662 keV$ to $10 MeV$.

Energy Resolution Improvement of Scintielectron detectors: Priorities and Prospects

The development prospects of a scintillator-photodiode type detector with an improved energy resolution attaining few per cent, R from 1 to 2%, are considered. The main resolution components have been analyzed theoretically, their theoretical and physical limits have been established. Empirical data on the properties of novel scintillators have been presented confirming the possibility of the R improvement. New optimization methods have been proposed to optimize the detector statistical fluctuations and the scintillator intrinsic resolution. A specific importance of the intrinsic resolution is shown as a limiting threshold factor at the ionizing radiation energy values from 662 keV to 10 MeV and over.

Current-carrying states in superconductor/insulator and superconductor/semiconductor superlattices in the mesoscopic regime

We discuss some of the basic theoretical aspects of current-carrying states in superconducting superlattices with tunnel barriers in the mesoscopic regime, when the superconducting layer thickness is small compared to the BCS coherence length but large compared to the atomic scale. We establish the necessary conditions for the observation of the classical Josephson effect (with sinusoidal current-phase dependence) and derive self-consistent analytical expressions for the critical Josephson current. These expressions are proportional to an additional small factor and have unusual temperature dependence as compared with the single-junction case. For certain parameter values, the superconducting gap exhibits an exponential decrease due to pair-breaking effect of the supercurrent. The supercurrent can completely destroy the superconductivity of the system above a certain characteristic temperature (lower than the transition temperature of individual layers). In this paper, we also study the effect of intrabarrier exchange interactions. We show that this effect is strongly enhanced compared with the single- junction case and can manifest itself in an exponential decrease of the critical temperature.
