Orbitally induced hierarchy of exchange interactions in zigzag antiferromagnetic state of honeycomb silver delafossite Ag3Co2SbO6

We report the revised crystal structure, static and dynamic magnetic properties of quasi-two dimensional honeycomb-lattice silver delafossite Ag3Co2SbO6. The magnetic susceptibility and specific heat data are consistent with the onset of antiferromagnetic long range order at low temperatures with Néel temperature TN ~ 21.2 K. In addition, the magnetization curves revealed a field-induced (spin-flop type) transition below TN in moderate magnetic fields. The GGA+U calculations show the importance of the orbital degrees of freedom, which maintain a hierarchy of exchange interaction in the system. The strongest antiferromagnetic exchange coupling was found in the shortest Co-Co pairs and is due to direct and superexchange interactions between the half-filled xz+yz orbitals pointing directly to each other. The other four out of six nearest neighbor exchanges within the cobalt hexagon are suppressed, since for these bonds active half-filled orbitals turned out to be parallel and do not overlap. The electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra reveal a Gaussian shape line attributed to Co2+ ion in octahedral coordination with average effective g-factor g=2.3+/-0.1 at room temperature and shows strong divergence of ESR parameters below 120 K, which imply an extended region of short-range correlations. Based on the results of magnetic and thermodynamic studies in applied fields, we propose the magnetic phase diagram for the new honeycomb-lattice delafossite.

Role of local geometry in spin and orbital structure of transition metal compounds

We analyze the role of local geometry in the spin and orbital interaction in transition metal compounds with orbital degeneracy. We stress that the tendency observed for the most studied case (transition metals in O$_6$ octahedra with one common oxygen -- common corner of neighboring octahedra and with $\sim 180^{\circ}$ metal--oxygen--metal bonds), that ferro-orbital ordering renders antiferro-spin coupling, and, {\it vice versa}, antiferro-orbitals give ferro-spin ordering, is not valid in general case, in particular for octahedra with common edge and with $\sim 90^{\circ}$ M--O--M bonds. Special attention is paid to the ``third case'', neighboring octahedra with common face (three common oxygens) -- the case practically not considered until now, although there are many real systems with this geometry. Interestingly enough, the spin--orbital exchange in this case turns out to be to be simpler and more symmetric than in the first two cases. We also consider, which form the effective exchange takes for different geometries in case of strong spin--orbit coupling.

Calculation of the exchange constants of the Heisenberg model in the plane-wave based methods using the Green's function approach

An approach to compute exchange parameters of the Heisenberg model in plane-wave-based methods is presented. This calculation scheme is based on the Green's function method and Wannier function projection technique. It was implemented in the framework of the pseudopotential method and tested on such materials as NiO, FeO, Li2MnO3, and KCuF3. The obtained exchange constants are in a good agreement with both the total energy calculations and experimental estimations for NiO and KCuF3. In the case of FeO our calculations explain the pressure dependence of the Néel temperature. Li2MnO3 turns out to be a Slater insulator with antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor exchange defined by the spin splitting. The proposed approach provides a unique way to analyze magnetic interactions, since it allows one to calculate orbital contributions to the total exchange coupling and study the mechanism of the exchange coupling.

Coexisting charge and magnetic orders in the dimer-chain iridate Ba5AlIr2O11

We have synthesized and studied single-crystal Ba5AlIr2O11 that features dimer chains of two inequivalent octahedra occupied by tetravalent and pentavalent ions, respectively. Ba5AlIr2O11 is a Mott insulator that undergoes a subtle structural phase transition near 210 K and a magnetic transition at 4.5 K; the latter transition is surprisingly resistant to applied magnetic fields up to 12 T, but sensitive to modest applied pressure. All results indicate that the phase transition at 210 K signals an enhanced charge order that induces electrical dipoles and strong dielectric response near 210 K. It is clear that the strong covalency and spin-orbit interaction (SOI) suppress double exchange in Ir dimers and stabilize a novel magnetic state. The behavior of Ba5AlIr2O11 therefore provides unique insights into the physics of SOI along with strong covalency in competition with double exchange interactions of comparable strength.

Spin--orbital interaction for face-sharing octahedra: Realization of a highly symmetric SU(4) model

Specific features of orbital and spin structure of transition metal compounds in the case of the face-sharing MO$_6$ octahedra are analyzed. In this geometry, we consider the form of the spin--orbital Hamiltonian for transition metal ions with double ($e_g^σ$) or triple ($t_{2g}$) orbital degeneracy. Trigonal distortions typical of the structures with face-sharing octahedra lead to splitting of $t_{2g}$ orbitals into an $a_{1g}$ singlet and $e_g^π$ doublet. For both doublets ($e_g^σ$ and $e_g^π$), in the case of one electron or hole per site, we arrive at a symmetric model with the orbital and spin interaction of the Heisenberg type and the Hamiltonian of unexpectedly high symmetry: SU(4). Thus, many real materials with this geometry can serve as a testing ground for checking the prediction of this interesting theoretical model. We also compare general trends in spin--orbital ("Kugel--Khomskii") exchange interaction for three typical situations: those of MO$_6$ octahedra with common corner, common edge, and the present case of common face, which has not been considered yet.

Lattice-Tuned Magnetism of Ru4+(4d4) Ions in Single-Crystals of the Layered Honeycomb Ruthenates: Li2RuO3 and Na2RuO3

We synthesize and study single crystals of the layered honeycomb lattice Mott insulators Na2RuO3 and Li2RuO3 with magnetic Ru4+(4d4) ions. The newly found Na2RuO3 features a nearly ideal honeycomb lattice and orders antiferromagnetically at 30 K. Single-crystals of Li2RuO3 adopt a honeycomb lattice with either C2/m or more distorted P21/m below 300 K, depending on detailed synthesis conditions. We find that Li2RuO3 in both structures hosts a well-defined magnetic state, in contrast to the singlet ground state found in polycrystalline Li2RuO3. A phase diagram generated based on our results uncovers a new, direct correlation between the magnetic ground state and basal-plane distortions in the honeycomb ruthenates.

Effect of Eu doping and partial oxygen isotope substitution on magnetic phase transitions in (Pr$_{1-y}$Eu$_y$)$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$CoO$_3$ cobaltites

We study experimentally and theoretically the effect of Eu doping and partial oxygen isotope substitution on the transport and magnetic characteristics and spin-state transitions in (Pr$_{1-y}$Eu$_y$)$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$CoO$_3$ cobaltites. The Eu doping level $y$ is chosen in the range of the phase diagram near the crossover between the ferromagnetic and spin-state transitions ($0.10 < y < 0.20$). We prepared a series of samples with different degrees of enrichment by the heavy oxygen isotope $^{18}$O, namely, containing 90%, 67%, 43%, 17%, and 0% of $^{18}$O. Based on the measurements of ac magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$ and electrical resistivity $ρ(T)$, we analyze the evolution of the sample properties with the change of Eu and $^{18}$O content. It is demonstrated that the effect of increasing $^{18}$O content on the system is similar to that of increasing the Eu content. The band structure calculations of the energy gap between $t_{2g}$ and $e_g$ bands including the renormalization of this gap due to the electron-phonon interaction reveal the physical mechanisms underlying such similarity.

Jahn-Teller distortions and charge, orbital and magnetic orders in NaMn7O12

With the use of the band structure calculations we demonstrate that previously reported [Nat. Materials {\bf 3}, 48 (2004)] experimental crystal and magnetic structures for NaMn$_7$O$_{12}$ are inconsistent with each other. The optimization of the crystal lattice allows us to predict a new crystal structure for the low temperature phase, which is qualitatively different from the one presented before. The AFM-CE type of the magnetic order stabilizes the structure with the elongated, not compressed Mn$^{3+}_B$O$_6$ octahedra, striking NaMn$_7$O$_{12}$ out of the list of the anomalous Jahn-Teller systems. The orbital correlations were shown to exist even in the cubic phase, while the charge order appears only in the low temperature distorted phase.

Magnetic phase diagram and first principles study of Pb3TeCo3V2O14

An antiferromagnetic ordering in Pb3TeCo3V2O14 takes place through formation of short range correlation regime with T* ~ 10.5 K and succession of second order phase transition at TN1 = 8.9 K and first order phase transition at TN2 = 6.3 K. An external magnetic field rapidly destroys magnetic structure at T < TN2 and influences the magnetic order at TN2 < T < TN1 resulting in complex magnetic phase diagram of Pb3TeCo3V2O14 as derived from magnetization and specific heat measurements. The first principles calculations indicate that in variance with layered crystal structure the magnetic subsystem of Pb3TeCo3V2O14 is quasi-one-dimensional and highly unusual consisting of weakly coupled triangular tubes.

The nature of the ferromagnetic ground state in the Mn4 molecular magnet

Using ab initio band structure and model calculations we studied magnetic properties of one of the Mn$_4$ molecular magnets (Mn4(hmp)6), where two types of the Mn ions exist: Mn3+ and Mn2+. The direct calculation of the exchange constants in the GGA+U approximation shows that in contrast to a common belief the strongest exchange coupling is not between two Mn3+ ions (J_{bb}), but along two out of four exchange paths connecting Mn3+ and Mn2+ ions (J_{wb}). The microscopic analysis performed within the perturbation theory allowed to establish the mechanism for this largest ferromagnetic exchange constant. The charge ordering of the Mn ions results in the situation when the energy of the excited state in the exchange process is defined not by the large on-site Coulomb repulsion U, but by much smaller energy V, which stabilizes the charge ordered state. Together with strong Hund's rule coupling and specific orbital order this leads to a large ferromagnetic exchange interaction for two out of four Mn2+ --Mn3+ pairs.

Orbital structure and magnetic ordering in stoichiometric and doped crednerite CuMnO2

The exchange interactions and magnetic structure in layered system CuMnO2 (mineral crednerite) and in nonstoichiometric system Cu1.04Mn0.96O2, with triangular layers distorted due to orbital ordering of the Mn3+ ions, are studied by ab-initio band-structure calculations, which were performed within the GGA+U approximation. The exchange interaction parameters for the Heisenberg model within the Mn-planes and between the Mn-planes were estimated. We explain the observed in-plane magnetic structure by the dominant mechanism of the direct d-d exchange between neighboring Mn ions. The superexchange via O ions, with 90 degree Mn-O-Mn bonds, plays less important role for the in-plane exchange. The interlayer coupling is largely dominated by one exchange path between the half-filled 3z^2-r^2 orbitals of Mn3+. The change of interlayer coupling from antiferromagnetic in pure CuMnO2 to ferromagnetic in doped material is also explained by our calculations.

Ab initio investigation of the exchange interactions in Bi$_2$Fe$_4$O$_9$: The Cairo pentagonal lattice compound

We present the \emph{ab initio} calculation of the electronic structure and magnetic properties of Bi$_2$Fe$_4$O$_9$. This compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal structure with the Fe$^{3+}$ ions forming the Cairo pentagonal lattice implying strong geometric frustration. The neutron diffraction measurements reveal nearly orthogonal magnetic configuration, which at first sight is rather unexpected since it does not minimize the total energy of the pair of magnetic ions coupled by the Heisenberg exchange interaction. Here we calculate the electronic structure and exchange integrals of Bi2Fe4O9 within the LSDA+U method. We obtain three different in-plane (J3=36 K, J4=73 K, J5=23 K) and two interplane (J1=10 K, J2=12 K) exchange parameters. The derived set of exchange integrals shows that the realistic description of Bi2Fe4O9 needs a more complicated model than the ideal Cairo pentagonal lattice with only two exchange parameters in the plane. However, if one takes into account only two largest exchange integrals, then according to the ratio x\equiv J3/J4=0.49<\sqrt{2} (a critical parameter for the ideal Cairo pentagonal lattice, see. Ref.~1) the ground state should be the orthogonal magnetic configuration in agreement with experiment. The microscopic origin of different exchange interactions is also discussed.

Magnetic moment suppression in Ba3CoRu2O9: hybridization effect

An unusual orbital state was recently proposed to explain the magnetic and transport properties of Ba$_3$CoRu$_2$O$_9$ [Phys. Rev. B. {\bf 85}, 041201 (2012)]. We show that this state contradicts to the first Hund's rule and does not realize in the system under consideration because of a too small crystal-field splitting in the $t_{2g}$ shell. A strong suppression of the local magnetic moment in Ba$_3$CoRu$_2$O$_9$ is attributed to a strong hybridization between the Ru 4$d$ and O 2$p$ states.

Interplay between lattice, orbital, and magnetic degrees of freedom in the chain-polymer Cu(II) breathing crystals

The chain-polymer Cu(II) breathing crystals C21H19CuF12N4O6 were studied using the x-ray diffraction and ab initio band structure calculations. We show that the crystal structure modification at T=146 K, associated with the spin crossover transition, induces the changes of the orbital order in half of the Cu sites. This in turn results in the switch of the magnetic interaction sign in accordance with the Goodenough-Kanamori-Andersen theory of the coupling between the orbital and spin degrees of freedom.

Spin-state transition, magnetism and local crystal structure in Eu_{1-x}Ca_xCoO_{3-d}

The doping series Eu1-xCaxCoO3-d provides a rather peculiar way to study the spin-state transition in cobalt-based complex oxides since partial substitution of Eu3+ ions by Ca2+ ions does not increase the mean valence state of cobalt but is accompanied by appearance of oxygen vacancies in the ratio d \sim x/2. In the parent compound EuCoO3, the low spin (LS)-high spin (HS) transition takes place at temperatures so high that the chemical decomposition prevents its direct observation. The substitution of Eu3+ for Ca2+ in this system shifts the LS-HS transition to lower temperatures. The energy gap associated with this transition in octahedrally-coordinated Co3+ ions changes from 1940 K in EuCoO3 to 1540 K in Eu0.9Ca0.1CoO2.95 and 1050 K in Eu0.8Ca0.2CoO2.9. Besides, each O2- vacancy reduces the local coordination of two neighboring Co3+ ions from octahedral to pyramidal thereby locally creating magnetically active sites which couple into dimers. These dimers at low temperatures form another gapped magnetic system with very different energy scale, D~3 K, on the background of intrinsically non-magnetic lattice of octahedrally-coordinated low-spin Co3+ ions.

Unconventional magnetism as a consequence of the charge disproportionation and the molecular orbital formation in Ba4Ru3O10

The magnetic and electronic properties of Ba$_4$Ru$_3$O$_{10}$ were investigated by the ab-initio and model calculations. It is shown that nonmagnetic ground state of the one-third Ru$^{4+}$ ions is not due to the correlation effects. It is rather caused by the charge disproportionation between crystallographically different Ru and the molecular orbital formation in the Ru's trimer.

Electronic Raman scattering in metals: effects of electron-phonon coupling

We report the first systematic measurements of the Raman scattering by electrons in elemental metals of Al, Mo, Nb, Os, Pb, Re, Ta, Ti, V, W and metallic compound La$B_6$. Experimental spectra are modelled on the base of the band structures, calculated within the density functional theory, taking properly into account the effects of electron-phonon scattering. The agreement between our measured and calculated spectra is excellent for the variety of metals, thus providing estimates for the electron-phonon coupling constants and temperature-dependent relaxation rates. The method can be applied for other metallic materials to evaluate an electron-phonon coupling as an alternative to the transport and optical measurements.

Magnetic susceptibility of Ce: an LDA+DMFT study

The magnetic properties of Ce in the $α$ and $γ$ phase are calculated within the LDA+DMFT approach. The magnetic susceptibility in these two phases shows a similar behavior over a wide temperature range: a Curie-Weiss law at high temperatures, indicating the presence of local moments, followed by a maximum in a crossover regime, and a saturation characteristic of a state with screened local moments at low temperature. The difference in experimentally observable magnetic properties is caused by the shift of the susceptibility to higher temperatures in the $α-$phase compared to the $γ-$phase, due to the larger hybridization between localized $4f-$states and conductive $spd-$electrons.
