On collective nature of nonlinear torsional Alfvén waves

Torsional Alfvén waves in coronal plasma loops are usually considered to be non-collective, i.e. consist of cylindrical surfaces evolving independently, which significantly complicates their detection in observations. This non-collective nature, however, can get modified in the nonlinear regime. To address this question, the propagation of nonlinear torsional Alfvén waves in straight magnetic flux tubes has been investigated numerically using the astrophysical MHD code Athena++ and analytically, to support numerical results, using the perturbation theory up to the second order. Numerical results have revealed that there is radially uniform induced density perturbation whose uniformity does not depend on the radial structure of the mother Alfvén wave. Our analysis showed that the ponderomotive force leads to the induction of the radial and axial velocity perturbations, while the mechanism for the density perturbation is provided by a non-equal elasticity of a magnetic flux tube in the radial and axial directions. The latter can be qualitatively understood by the interplay between the Alfvén wave perturbations, external medium, and the flux tube boundary conditions. The amplitude of these nonlinearly induced density perturbations is found to be determined by the amplitude of the Alfvén driver squared and the plasma parameter $β$. The existence of the collective and radially uniform density perturbation accompanying nonlinear torsional Alfvén waves could be considered as an additional observational signature of Alfvén waves in the upper layers of the solar atmosphere.

Propagating torsional Alfvén waves in thermally active solar plasma

The aim of the present study is to shed light on the effects connected with thermal misbalance due to non-equal cooling and heating rates induced by density and temperature perturbations in solar active regions hosting either propagating torsional or shear Alfvén waves. A description for the nonlinear forces connected with Alfvén waves in non-ideal conditions is provided based on the second order thin flux tube approximation. This provides insight on the effects of Alfvén-induced motions on the boundary of thin magnetic structures in thermally active plasmas. The equations describing the process of generating longitudinal velocity perturbations together with density perturbations by nonlinear torsional Alfvén waves are obtained and solved analytically. It is shown that the phase shift (compared to the ideal case) and the amplitude of the induced longitudinal plasma motions against the period of mother Alfvén wave are greater for shear Alfvén waves compared to torsional Alfvén waves although following the same pattern. The difference in the influence of thermal misbalance on the induced velocity perturbations is governed by the plasma-beta although its effect is stronger for shear waves. It is deduced that for a harmonic Alfvén driver the induced density perturbations are left uninfluenced by the thermal misbalance.

Longitudinal Plasma Motions Generated by Shear Alfvén Waves in Plasma with Thermal Misbalance

Compressional plasma perturbations may cause thermal misbalance between plasma heating and cooling processes. This misbalance significantly affects the dispersion properties of compressional waves providing a feedback between the perturbations and plasmas. It has been shown that Alfvén waves may induce longitudinal (compressional) plasma motions. In the present study, we analyze the effects of thermal misbalance caused by longitudinal plasma motions induced by shear Alfvén waves. We show that thermal misbalance leads to appearance of exponential bulk flows, which itself modifies the Alfvén induced plasma motions. In the case of sinusoidal Alfvén waves, we show how the amplitude and phase shift of induced longitudinal motions gain dependence on the Alfvén wave frequency while shedding light on its functionality. This feature has been investigated analytically in application to coronal conditions. We also consider the evolution of longitudinal plasma motions induced by the shear sinusoidal Alfvén wave by numerical methods before comparing the results obtained with our presented analytical predictions to justify the model under consideration in the present study.

Magnetohydrodynamic Fast Sausage Waves in the Solar Corona

Characterized by cyclic axisymmetric perturbations to both the magnetic and fluid parameters, magnetohydrodynamic fast sausage modes (FSMs) have proven useful for solar coronal seismology given their strong dispersion. This review starts by summarizing the dispersive properties of the FSMs in the canonical configuration where the equilibrium quantities are transversely structured in a step fashion. With this preparation we then review the recent theoretical studies on coronal FSMs, showing that the canonical dispersion features have been better understood physically, and further exploited seismologically. In addition, we show that departures from the canonical equilibrium configuration have led to qualitatively different dispersion features, thereby substantially broadening the range of observations that FSMs can be invoked to account for. We also summarize the advances in forward modeling studies, emphasizing the intricacies in interpreting observed oscillatory signals in terms of FSMs. All these advances notwithstanding, we offer a list of aspects that remain to be better addressed, with the physical connection of coronal FSMs to the quasi-periodic pulsations in solar flares particularly noteworthy.

The emergence of pseudo-stable states in network dynamics

In the context of network dynamics, the complexity of systems increases possible evolutionary paths that often are not deterministic. Occasionally, some map routs form over the course of time which guide systems towards some particular states. The main intention of this study is to discover an indicator that can help predict these pseudo-deterministic paths in advance. Here we investigate the dynamics of networks based on Heider balance theory that states the tendency of systems towards decreasing tension. This inclination leads systems to some local and global minimum tension states called "jammed states" and "balanced states", respectively. We show that not only paths towards jammed states are not completely random but also there exist secret pseudo deterministic paths that bound the system to end up in these special states. Our results display that the Inverse Participation Ratio method (IPR) can be a suitable indicator that exhibits collective behaviors of systems. According to this method, these specific paths are those that host the most participation of the constituents in the system. A direct proportionality exists between the distance and the selectable paths towards local minimums; where by getting close to the final steps there is no other way but the one to the jammed states.

Patterns for the waiting time in the context of discrete-time stochastic processes

The aim of this study is to extend the scope and applicability of the level-crossing method to discrete-time stochastic processes and generalize it to enable us to study multiple discrete-time stochastic processes. In previous versions of the level-crossing method, problems with it correspond to the fact that this method had been developed for analyzing a continuous-time process or at most a multiple continuous-time process in an individual manner. However, since all empirical processes are discrete in time, the already-established level-crossing method may not prove adequate for studying empirical processes. Beyond this, due to the fact that most empirical processes are coupled; their individual study could lead to vague results. To achieve the objectives of this study, we first find an analytical expression for the average frequency of crossing a level in a discrete-time process, giving the measure of the time experienced for two consecutive crossings named as the "waiting time". We then introduce the generalized level-crossing method by which the consideration of coupling between the components of a multiple process becomes possible. Finally, we provide an analytic solution when the components of a multiple stochastic process are independent Gaussian white noises. The comparison of the results obtained for coupled and uncoupled processes measures the strength and efficiency of the coupling, justifying our model and analysis. The advantage of the proposed method is its sensitivity to the slightest coupling and shortest correlation length.

The period ratio P_1/P_2 of torsional Alfvén waves with steady flows in spicules

The aim here is to model the standing torsional oscillations in solar spicules in the presence of density stratification, magnetic field expansion, and steady flows. By implementing cylindrical geometry, the eigenfrequencies, eigenfunctions, and the period ratio P_1/P_2 of these waves is obtained for finite plasma-beta. The shifts created by the steady flow justifies the divergence of the observed period ratio for the first and second periods from the number 2.

How visas shape and make visible the geopolitical architecture of the planet

The aim of the present study is to provide a picture for geopolitical globalization: the role of all world countries together with their contribution towards globalization is highlighted. In the context of the present study, every country owes its efficiency and therefore its contribution towards structuring the world by the position it holds in a complex global network. The location in which a country is positioned on the network is shown to provide a measure of its "contribution" and "importance". As a matter of fact, the visa status conditions between countries reflect their contribution towards geopolitical globalization. Based on the visa status of all countries, community detection reveals the existence of 4+1 main communities. The community constituted by the developed countries has the highest clustering coefficient equal to 0.9. In contrast, the community constituted by the old eastern European blocks, the middle eastern countries, and the old Soviet Union has the lowest clustering coefficient approximately equal to 0.65. PR China is the exceptional case. Thus, the picture of the globe issued in this study contributes towards understanding "how the world works".

Coupled uncertainty provided by a multifractal random walker

The aim here is to study the concept of pairing multifractality between time series possessing non-Gaussian distributions. The increasing number of rare events creates "criticality". We show how the pairing between two series is affected by rare events, which we call "coupled criticality". A method is proposed for studying the coupled criticality born out of the interaction between two series, using the bivariate multifractal random walk (BiMRW). This method allows studying dependence of the coupled criticality on the criticality of each individual system. This approach is applied to data sets of gold and oil markets, and inflation and unemployment.

The laws of thermodynamics and information for emergent cosmology

The aim here is to provide a set of equations for cosmology in terms of information and thermodynamical parameters. The method we implement in order to describe the universe is a development of Padmanabhan\rq{}s approach which is based on the fact that emergence of the cosmic space is provided by the evolution of the cosmic time. In this line we obtain the Friedmann equation or its equivalent the conservation law in terms of information by the implementation of Laundauer\rq{}s principle or in other words the information loss/production rate. Hence, a self consistent description of the universe is provided in terms of thermodynamical parameters. This is due to the fact that in this work the role of information which is the most important actor of all times, has stepped in to cosmology. We provide a picture of the emergent cosmology merely based on the information theory. In addition, we introduce a novel entropy on the horizon, which can also generalize Bekenstein-Hawking entropy for the asymptotic holographic principle.

Surface coupling effects on the capacitance of thin insulating films

A general form for the surface roughness effects on the capacitance of a capacitor is proposed. We state that a capacitor with two uncoupled rough surfaces could be treated as two capacitors in series which have been divided from the mother capacitor by a slit. This is in contrast to the case where the two rough surfaces are coupled. When the rough surfaces are coupled, the type of coupling decides the modification of the capacitance in comparison to the uncoupled case. It is shown that if the coupling between the two surfaces of the capacitor is positive (negative), the capacitance is less (higher) than the case of two uncoupled rough plates. Also, we state that when the correlation length and the roughness exponent are small, the coupling effect is not negligible.

Hawking temperature and the emergent cosmic space

The aim of this work is to model the evolution of the cosmic space based on thermodynamical parameters. The universe is considered to have an apparent horizon radius with a Kodama-Hayward temperature assigned to it. The method is founded on the fact proposed by Padmanabhan [1,2] that the subtraction of the surface and bulk degrees of freedom provides information on the cosmic space emergence. The fact of the matter is that in this approach the Raychaudhuri equation could even be obtained by the consideration of only thermodynamical parameters. As such, the standard general relativity is taken as the starting point where by implementing the standard cosmological equations we obtain a generalized evolutionary equation supporting emergence of the cosmic space. The method proposed in this work would provide basis for other cosmological models to have an emergent perspective.

Thin films thickness Measurement by the conductivity theory in the framework of born approximation

When the thickness of the layer is smaller than the electrons mean free path, the morphology affects the conductivity directly based on the layer thickness. This issue provides basis in order to estimate the thickness of the layer by understanding the morphology and the value of the conductivity. This method is an inverse approach on thickness estimation and is applied to various samples. The comparison of the results with other thickness estimations shows good consistency. The benefits of this approach is that the only parameter that needs to be measured is the conductivity, which is quite trivial. Despite the simplicity of this approach, its results would prove adequate to study both the material properties and the morphology of the layer. In addition, the possibility of repeating the measurements on thickness for AC currents with various frequencies enables averaging the measurements in order to obtain the most precise results.

Non-Gaussianity effect of petrophysical quantities by using q-entropy and multi fractal random walk

The geological systems such as petroleum reservoirs is investigated by the entropy introduced by Tsallis and multiplicative hierarchical cascade model. When non-Gaussianity appears, it is sign of uncertainty and phase transition, which could be sign of existence of petroleum reservoirs. Two important parameters which describe a system at any scale are determined; the non-Gaussian degree, $q$, announced in entropy and the intermittency, $λ^2$, which explains a critical behavior in the system. There exist some petrophysical indicators in order to characterize a reservoir, but there is vacancy to measure scaling information contain in comparison with together, yet. In this article, we compare the non-Gaussianity in three selected indicators in various scales. The quantities investigated in this article includes Gamma emission (GR), sonic transient time (DT) and Neutron porosity (NPHI). It is observed that GR has a fat tailed PDF at all scales which is a sign of phase transition in the system which indicates high $q$ and $λ^2$. This results in the availability of valuable information about this quantity. NPHI displays a scale dependence of PDF which converges to a Gaussian at large scales. This is a sign of a separated and uncorrelated porosity at large scales. For the DT series, small $λ^2$ and $q$ at all scales are a hallmark of local correlations in this quantity.

Path derivation for a wave scattered model to estimate height correlation function of rough surfaces

The long standing problem on finding the height correlation function is studied by the inverse scattering problem. We propose a new method in the frame work of Kirchhoff theory which we call "path derivation of scattered wave (PDSW)" in order to obtain an expression for direct measurements of the height correlation function. This would provide adequate insight to rough surfaces. The efficiency of this method is due to the fact that the height correlation function could be estimated directly by measurements of the scattered intensity on a suggested path. The model is tested numerically and an experimental setup is suggested.
