Global hyperon polarization at local thermodynamic equilibrium with vorticity, magnetic field and feed-down

The system created in ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions is known to behave as an almost ideal liquid. In non-central collisions, due to the large orbital momentum, such a system might be the fluid with the highest vorticity ever created under laboratory conditions. Particles emerging from such a highly vorticous fluid are expected to be globally polarized with their spins on average pointing along the system angular momentum. Vorticity-induced polarization is the same for particles and antiparticles, but the intense magnetic field generated in these collisions may lead to the splitting in polarization. In this paper we outline the thermal approach to the calculation of the global polarization phenomenon for particles with spin and we discuss the details of the experimental study of this phenomenon, estimating the effect of feed-down. A general formula is derived for the polarization transfer in two-body decays and, particularly, for strong and electromagnetic decays. We find that accounting for such effects is crucial when extracting vorticity and magnetic field from the experimental data.

Plaquette representation for 3D lattice gauge models: I. Formulation and perturbation theory

We develop an analytical approach for studying lattice gauge theories within the plaquette representation where the plaquette matrices play the role of the fundamental degrees of freedom. We start from the original Batrouni formulation and show how it can be modified in such a way that each non-abelian Bianchi identity contains only two connectors instead of four. In addition, we include dynamical fermions in the plaquette formulation. Using this representation we construct the low-temperature perturbative expansion for U(1) and SU(N) models and discuss its uniformity in the volume. The final aim of this study is to give a mathematical background for working with non-abelian models in the plaquette formulation.

e+e--pair production in Pb-Au collisions at 158 GeV per nucleon

We present the combined results on electron-pair production in 158 GeV/n {Pb-Au} ($\sqrt{s}$= 17.2 GeV) collisions taken at the CERN SPS in 1995 and 1996, and give a detailed account of the data analysis. The enhancement over the reference of neutral meson decays amounts to a factor of 2.31$\pm0.19 (stat.)\pm0.55 (syst.)\pm0.69 (decays)$ for semi-central collisions (28% $σ/σ_{geo}$) when yields are integrated over $m>$ 200 MeV/$c^2$ in invariant mass. The measured yield, its stronger-than-linear scaling with $N_{ch}$, and the dominance of low pair $p_t$ strongly suggest an interpretation as {\it thermal radiation} from pion annihilation in the hadronic fireball. The shape of the excess centring at $m\approx$ 500 MeV/$c^2$, however, cannot be described without strong medium modifications of the $ρ$ meson. The results are put into perspective by comparison to predictions from Brown-Rho scaling governed by chiral symmetry restoration, and from the spectral-function many-body treatment in which the approach to the phase boundary is less explicit.

Expression of Interest for a Comprehensive New Detector at RHIC II

There are compelling physics questions to be addressed by a new comprehensive detector at a future, high-luminosity RHIC II collider. These form the basis for this Expression of Interest. What precisely are the properties of the strongly-coupled Quark Gluon Plasma (sQGP)? Can a more weakly interacting QGP state be formed and investigated at RHIC? How do particles acquire mass and what is the effect of chiral symmetry restoration on hadronization in a dense medium? What is the chiral structure of the QCD vacuum and its influence on and contributions of different QCD vacuum states to the masses of particles? Is there another phase of matter at low Bjorken-x, i.e. the Color Glass Condensate (CGC)? If present, what are its features and how does it evolve into the QGP? If not, are parton distribution functions understood at low Bjorken-x and can they describe particle production? What are the structure and dynamics inside the proton, including parton spin and orbital angular momentum? What are the contributions of gluons and the QCD sea to the polarization of the proton? What is the flavor-dependence? Are there tests for new physics beyond the Standard Model from spin measurements at RHIC II (such as parity-violating interactions)? We propose that a new comprehensive detector system is needed for RHIC II to address these questions adequately and in an effective way.

Elliptic flow contribution to two-particle correlations at different orientations to the reaction plane

Collective anisotropic particle flow, a general phenomenon present in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, can be separated from direct particle-particle correlations of different physics origin by virtue of its specific azimuthal pattern. We provide expressions for flow-induced two-particle azimuthal correlations, if one of the particles is detected under fixed directions with respect to the reaction plane. We consider an ideal case when the reaction plane angle is exactly known, as well as present the general expressions in case of finite event-plane resolution. We foresee applications for the study of generic two-particle correlations at large transverse momentum originating from jet fragmentation.

Nucleon participants or quark participants?

We show that centrality dependence of charged particle pseudorapidity density at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at RHIC is well described as proportional to We show that centrality dependence of charged particle pseudorapidity density at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at RHIC is well described as proportional to the number of participating constituent quarks. In this approach there is no need for an additional contribution from hard processes usually considered in the models based on the number of the nucleon participants.

Methods for the Study of Particle Production Fluctuations

We discuss various measures of net charge (conserved quantities) fluctuations proposed for the identification of critical phenomena in heavy ion collisions. We show the dynamical component of fluctuations of the net charge can be expressed simply in terms of integrals of two- and single-particle densities. We discuss the dependence of the fluctuation observables on detector acceptance, detection efficiency and colliding system size and collision centrality. Finally, we present a toy model of particle production including charge conservation and resonance production to gauge the effects of such resonances and finite acceptance on the net charge fluctuations.

Analytical study of low temperature phase of 3D LGT in the plaquette formulation

We develop an analytical approach for non-abelian gauge models within the plaquette representation where the plaquette matrices play the role of the fundamental degrees of freedom. We start from the original Batrouni formulation and show how it can be modified in such a way that each non-abelian Bianchi identity contains two connectors instead of four. Using this representation we construct the low-temperature expansion for U(1) and SU(N) models on a finite lattice and discuss its uniformity in the volume. Next, we derive a dual representation for the 't Hooft loop in the SU(2) model and describe monopoles in the maximal axial gauge.

Radial and elliptic flow at RHIC: further predictions

Using a hydrodynamic model, we predict the transverse momentum dependence of the spectra and the elliptic flow for different hadrons in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s) = 130 A GeV. The dependence of the differential and p_t-integrated elliptic flow on the hadron mass, equation of state and freeze-out temperature is studied both numerically and analytically.

Directed flow of antiprotons in Au+Au collisions at AGS

Directed flow of antiprotons is studied in Au+Au collisions at a beam momentum of 11.5A GeV/c. It is shown that antiproton directed flow is anti-correlated to proton flow. The measured transverse momentum dependence of the antiproton flow is compared with predictions of the RQMD event generator.

Deuterons and space-momentum correlations in high energy nuclear collisions

Using a microscopic transport model together with a coalescence after-burner, we study the formation of deuterons in Au + Au central collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200 AGeV$. It is found that the deuteron transverse momentum distributions are strongly affected by the nucleon space-momentum correlations, at the moment of freeze-out, which are mostly determined by the number of rescatterings. This feature is useful for studying collision dynamics at ultrarelativistic energies.

Directed Flow of Light Nuclei in Au+Au Collisions at AGS Energies

Directed flow of deuterons, tritons, $^3$He, and $^4$He is studied in Au+Au collisions at a beam momentum of about 10.8 $A$ GeV/c. Flow of all particles is analyzed as a function of transverse momentum for different centralities of the collision. The directed flow signal, $v_1(p_t)$, is found to increase with particle mass. This mass dependence is strongest in the projectile rapidity region.

On the normalization of the HBT correlation function

We discuss the question of the normalization of the correlation function and its consistency with the often used form C(p1,p2) = 1+|f(p1,p2)|^2. We suggest an event mixing method which allows one to obtain absolutely normalized correlation functions from experimental data.

Relative space-time asymmetries in pion and nucleon production in non-central nucleus-nucleus collisions at high energies

We propose to use the ratio of the pion-proton correlation functions evaluated under different conditions to study the relative space-time asymmetries in pion and proton emission (pion and nucleon source relative shifts) in high energy heavy ion collision. We address the question of the non-central collisions, where the sources can be shifted spatially both in the longitudinal and in the transverse directions in the reaction plane. We use the RQMD event generator to illustrate the effect and the technique.

Two-pion correlations in Au+Au collisions at 10.8 GeV/c per nucleon

Two-particle correlation functions for positive and negative pions have been measured in Au+Au collisions at 10.8~GeV/c per nucleon. The data were analyzed using one- and three-dimensional correlation functions. From the results of the three-dimensional fit the phase space density of pions was calculated. It is consistent with local thermal equilibrium.

Flow Study in Relativistic Nuclear Collisions by Fourier Expansion of Azimuthal Particle Distributions

We propose a new method to study transverse flow effects in relativistic nuclear collisions by Fourier analysis of the azimuthal distribution on an event-by-event basis in relatively narrow rapidity windows. The distributions of Fourier coefficients provide direct information on the magnitude and type of flow. Directivity and two dimensional sphericity tensor, widely used to analyze flow, emerge naturally in our approach, since they correspond to the distributions of the first and second harmonic coefficients, respectively. The role of finite particle fluctuations and particle correlations is discussed.
