Polarization of the neutron induced from hadronic weak interactions in the photo-disintegration of the deuteron

New observables with which we can study the two-nucleon weak interactions at low energies are considered. In the breakup of the deuteron by photons, polarization of outgoing neutrons can depend on the parity-violating component of two-nucleon interactions. We express the parity-violating polarization in general forms, and perform numerical calculations with a pionless effective field theory. The theory has unknown parity-violating low energy constants, and the results are expressed in linear combination of them. We discuss the results and their implication to the understanding of the hadronic weak interactions.

Parity-violating asymmetry in $γd \to \vec{n}p$ with a pionless effective theory

Nuclear parity violation is studied with polarized neutrons in the photodisintegration of the deuteron at low energies. A pionless effective field theory with di-baryon fields is used for the investigation. Hadronic weak interactions are treated by parity-violating di-baryon-nucleon-nucleon vertices, which have undetermined coupling contants. A parity-violating asymmetry in the process is calculated for the incident photon energy up to 30 MeV. If experimental data for the parity-violating asymmetry become available in the future, we will be able to determine the unknown coupling contants in the parity-violating vertices.

Kaon Condensation in a Neutron Star under Strong Magnetic Fields by Using the Modified Quark-meson Coupling Model

We have considered the antikaon condensation in a neutron star in the presence of strong magnetic fields by using the modified quark-meson coupling (MQMC) model. The structure of the neutron star is investigated with various magnetic fields and different kaon optical potentials, and the effects of the magnetic fields for kaon condensation is discussed. When employing strong magnetic fields inside a neutron star with hyperons and kaon condensation, the magnetic fields can cause the equation of state to be stiff; thus, a large maximum mass of the neutron star can be obtained.

Neutron Stars with Bose-Einstein Condensation of Antikaons as MIT Bags

We investigate the properties of an antikaon in medium, regarding itas a MIT bag. We first construct the MIT bag model for a kaon with$σ^*$ and $ϕ$ in order to describe the interaction of$s$-quarks in hyperonic matter in the framework of the modifiedquark-meson coupling model. The coupling constant $g'^{B_K}_σ$in the density-dependent bag constant $B(σ)$ is treated as afree parameter to reproduce the optical potential of a kaon in asymmetric matter and all other couplings are determined by usingSU(6) symmetry and the quark counting rule. With various values ofthe kaon potential, we calculate the effective mass of a kaon inmedium to compare it with that of a point-like kaon. We thencalculate the population of octet baryons, leptons and $K^-$ and theequation of state for neutron star matter. The results show thatkaon condensation in hyperonic matter is sensitive to the $s$-quarkinteraction and also to the way of treating the kaon. The mass andthe radius of a neutron star are obtained by solving theTolmann-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equation.

Extended Optical Model Analyses of Elastic Scattering and Fusion Cross Section Data for the 9Be+28Si, 144Sm, and 208Pb Systems at Near-Coulomb-Barrier Energies using Double Folding Potential

Based on the extended optical model with the double folding potential, in which the polarization potential is decomposed into direct reaction (DR) and fusion parts, simultaneous $χ^{2}$ analyses are performed of elastic scattering and fusion cross section data for the $^{9}$Be+$^{28}$Si, $^{144}$Sm, and $^{208}$Pb systems at near-Coulomb-barrier energies. We find that the real part of the resultant DR part of the polarization potential is systematically repulsive for all the targets considered, which is consistent with the results deduced from the Continuum Discretized Coupled Channel (CDCC) calculations taking into account the polarization effects due to breakup. Further, it is found that both DR and fusion parts of the extracted polarization potentials satisfy the dispersion relation.

Rotational energy term in the empirical formula for the yrast energies in even-even nuclei

We show that part of the empirical formula describing the gross features of the measured yrast energies of the natural parity even multipole states for even-even nuclei can be related to the rotational energy of nuclei. When the first term of the empirical formula, $αA^{-γ}$, is regarded as the otational energy, we can better understand the results of the previous analyses of the excitation energies. We show that the values of the parameters $α$ and $γ$ newly obtained by considering the $αA^{-γ}$ term as the rotational energy of a rigid rotor are remarkably consistent with those values extracted from the earlier `modified' $χ^2$ analyses, in which we use the logarithms of the excitation energies in defining the `modified' $χ^2$ values.

Magnetic moment of hyperons in nuclear matter by using quark-meson coupling models

We calculate the magnetic moments of hyperons in dense nuclear matter by using relativistic quark models. Hyperons are treated as MIT bags, and the interactions are considered to be mediated by the exchange of scalar and vector mesons which are approximated as mean fields. Model dependence is investigated by using the quark-meson coupling model and the modified quark-meson coupling model; in the former the bag constant is independent of density and in the latter it depends on density. Both models give us the magnitudes of the magnetic moments increasing with density for most octet baryons. But there is a considerable model dependence in the values of the magnetic moments in dense medium. The magnetic moments at the nuclear saturation density calculated by the quark meson coupling model are only a few percents larger than those in free space, but the magnetic moments from the modified quark meson coupling model increase more than 10% for most hyperons. The correlations between the bag radius of hyperons and the magnetic moments of hyperons in dense matter are discussed.

Proton-proton fusion in pionless effective theory

The proton-proton fusion reaction, $pp\to de^+ν$, is studied in pionless effective field theory (EFT) with di-baryon fields up to next-to leading order. With the aid of the di-baryon fields, the effective range corrections are naturally resummed up to the infinite order and thus the calculation is greatly simplified. Furthermore, the low-energy constant which appears in the axial-current-di-baryon-di-baryon contact vertex is fixed through the ratio of two- and one-body matrix elements which reproduces the tritium lifetime very precisely. As a result we can perform a parameter free calculation for the process. We compare our numerical result with those from the accurate potential model and previous pionless EFT calculations, and find a good agreement within the accuracy better than 1%.

Extended Optical Model Analyses of Elastic Scattering and Fusion Cross Section Data for the $^{12}$C+$^{208}$Pb System at Near-Coulomb-Barrier Energies by using a Folding Potential

Simultaneous $χ^{2}$ analyses are performed for elastic scattering and fusion cross section data for the $^{12}$C+$^{208}$Pb system at near-Coulomb-barrier energies by using the extended optical model approach in which the polarization potential is decomposed into direct reaction (DR) and fusion parts. Use is made of the double folding potential as a bare potential. It is found that the experimental elastic scattering and fusion data are well reproduced without introducing any normalization factor for the double folding potential and also that both DR and fusion parts of the polarization potential determined from the $χ^{2}$ analyses satisfy separately the dispersion relation. Furthermore, it is shown that the imaginary parts of both DR and fusion potentials at the strong absorption radius change very rapidly, which results in a typical threshold anomaly in the total imaginary potential as observed with tightly bound projectiles such as $α$-particle and $^{16}$O.

Extended Optical Model Analyses of Elastic Scattering and Fusion Cross Section Data for the 7Li+208Pb System at Near-Coulomb-Barrier Energies using the Folding Potential

Simultaneous $χ^{2}$ analyses previously made for elastic scattering and fusion cross section data for the $^{6}$Li+$^{208}$Pb system is extended to the $^{7}$Li+$^{208}$Pb system at near-Coulomb-barrier energies based on the extended optical model approach, in which the polarization potential is decomposed into direct reaction (DR) and fusion parts. Use is made of the double folding potential as a bare potential. It is found that the experimental elastic scattering and fusion data are well reproduced without introducing any normalization factor for the double folding potential and that both the DR and fusion parts of the polarization potential determined from the $χ^{2}$ analyses satisfy separately the dispersion relation. Further, we find that the real part of the fusion portion of the polarization potential is attractive while that of the DR part is repulsive except at energies far below the Coulomb barrier energy. A comparison is made of the present results with those obtained from the Continuum Discretized Coupled Channel (CDCC) calculations and a previous study based on the conventional optical model with a double folding potential. We also compare the present results for the $^7$Li+$^{208}$Pb system with the analysis previously made for the $^{6}$Li+$^{208}$Pb system.

Kaon condensation and composition of neutron star matter in modified quark-meson coupling model

We use the modified quark-meson coupling (MQMC) model to study the composition profile of neutron star matter and compare the results with those calculated by quantum hadrodynamics (QHD). Both MQMC and QHD model parameters are adjusted to produce exactly the same saturation properties so that we can investigate the model dependences of the matter composition at high densities. We consider the possibility of deep kaon optical potential and find that the composition of matter is very sensitive to the interaction strength of kaons with matter. The onset densities of the kaon condensation are studied in detail by varying the kaon optical potentials. We find that the MQMC model produces the kaon condensation at lower densities than QHD. The presence of kaon condensation changes drastically the population of octet baryons and leptons. Once the kaon condensation takes place, the population of kaons builds up very quickly, and kaons become the dominant component of the matter. We find that the $ω$-meson plays an important role in increasing the kaon population and suppressing the hyperon population.

Kaon condensation in neutron star using relativistic mean field models

We use the modified quark-meson coupling and the quantum hadrodynamics models to study the properties of neutron star. Coupling constants of both models are adjusted to reproduce the same saturation properties. The onset of kaon condensation in neutron star matter is studied in detail over a wide range of kaon optical potential values. Once the kaon condensation takes place, the population of kaons increases very rapidly, and kaons become the dominant component, possibly making the neutron star matter a kaonic matter if the kaon optical potential is large.

A folding potential is used as the bare potential. It is found that the real part of the resultant DR part of the polarization potential is repulsive, which is consistent with the results from the Continuum Discretized Coupled Channel (CDCC) calculations and the normalization factors needed for the folding potentials. Further, it is found that both DR and fusion parts of the polarization potential satisfy separately the dispersion relation.

Radiative neutron capture on a proton at BBN energies

The total cross section for radiative neutron capture on a proton, $np \to d γ$, is evaluated at big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) energies. The electromagnetic transition amplitudes are calculated up to next-to leading order within the framework of pionless effective field theory with dibaryon fields. We also calculate the $dγ\to np$ cross section and the photon analyzing power for the $d\vecγ\to np$ process from the amplitudes. The values of low energy constants that appear in the amplitudes are estimated by a Markov Chain Monte Carlo analysis using the relevant low energy experimental data. Our result agrees well with those of other theoretical calculations except for the $np\to dγ$ cross section at some energies estimated by an R-matrix analysis. We also study the uncertainties in our estimation of the $np\to dγ$ cross section at relevant BBN energies and find that the estimated cross section is reliable to within $\sim$1% error.

Extended Optical Model Analyses of Elastic Scattering, Direct Reaction, and Fusion Cross Sections for the 9Be + 208Pb System at Near-Coulomb-Barrier Energies

Based on the extended optical model approach in which the polarization potential is decomposed into direct reaction (DR) and fusion parts, simultaneous $χ^{2}$ analyses are performed for elastic scattering, DR, and fusion cross section data for the $^{9}$Be+$^{208}$Pb system at near-Coulomb-barrier energies. Similar $χ^{2}$ analyses are also performed by only taking into account the elastic scattering and fusion data as was previously done by the present authors, and the results are compared with those of the full analysis including the DR cross section data as well. We find that the analyses using only elastic scattering and fusion data can produce very consistent and reliable predictions of cross sections particularly when the DR cross section data are not complete. Discussions are also given on the results obtained from similar analyses made earlier for the $^{9}$Be+$^{209}$Bi system.

Effective mass and decay of $Θ^+$ in nuclear matter in quark-meson coupling model

The in-medium mass of a $\thetaplus$, $\mtheta^*$, in cold symmetric nuclear matter is calculated by using the quark-meson coupling model. The $Θ^+$ is treated as an MIT bag with the quark content $uudd\bar s$. Bag parameters for a free $\thetaplus$ are fixed to reproduce the observed mass of the $\thetaplus$. In doing so, we use three different values of the $s$-quark mass since the mass of the $s$-quark is not well known. As usual, the strengths of the $u$ and $d$ quark couplings to $σ$- and $ω$-meson fields are determined to fit the nuclear saturation properties. However, the coupling constant $g_σ^s$ between the $s$-quark and the $σ$-meson cannot be fixed from the saturation properties, and thus we treat $g_σ^s$ as a free parameter and investigate how $\mtheta^*$ depends on $g_σ^s$. %$\mtheta^*$ is calculated up to 2.5 times the nuclear saturation density, %and we find that We find that $\mtheta^*$ depends significantly on the value of $g_σ^s$ but not on the mass of the $s$-quark. Chemical potentials of the $Θ^+$ and the $K+N$ system are calculated to discuss the decay of a $Θ^+$ in nuclear matter. We calculate the effective mass of a kaon in nuclear matter in two ways; using the optical potential of $K^-$ in matter and using quark model. By comparing the effective masses calculated from these two methods, we find the magnitude of the real part of the optical potential that is consistent with the usual quark model is about 100 MeV.

Hadron Masses in Medium and Neutron Star Properties

We investigate the properties of the neutron star with relativistic mean field models. We incorporate in the quantum hadrodynamics and in the quark-meson coupling models a possible reduction of meson masses in nuclear matter. The equation of state for neutron star matter is obtained and is employed in Oppenheimer-Volkov equation to extract the maximum mass of the stable neutron star. We find that the equation of state, the composition and the properties of the neutron stars are sensitive to the values of the meson masses in medium.

Parity nonconserving observables in thermal neutron capture on a proton

We calculate parity nonconserving observables in the processes where a neutron is captured on a proton at the threshold energy radiating a photon. Various potential models such as Paris, Bonn and Argonne $v18$ are used for the strong interactions, and the meson-exchange description is employed for the weak interactions between hadrons. The photon polarization $P_γ$ in the unpolarized neutron capture process and photon asymmetry $A_γ$ in the polarized neutron capture process are obtained in terms of the weak meson-nucleon coupling constants. $A_γ$ turns out to be basically insensitive to the employed strong interaction models and thus can be uniquely determined in terms of the weak coupling constants, but $P_γ$ depends significantly on the strong interaction models.
