A Time Projection Chamber for High Accuracy and Precision Fission Cross Section Measurements

The fission Time Projection Chamber (fissionTPC) is a compact (15 cm diameter) two-chamber MICROMEGAS TPC designed to make precision cross section measurements of neutron-induced fission. The actinide targets are placed on the central cathode and irradiated with a neutron beam that passes axially through the TPC inducing fission in the target. The 4$π$ acceptance for fission fragments and complete charged particle track reconstruction are powerful features of the fissionTPC which will be used to measure fission cross sections and examine the associated systematic errors. This paper provides a detailed description of the design requirements, the design solutions, and the initial performance of the fissionTPC.

Targets for Precision Measurements

The general properties needed in targets (sources) for high precision, high accuracy measurements are reviewed. The application of these principles to the problem of developing targets for the Fission TPC is described. Longer term issues, such as the availability of actinide materials, improved knowledge of energy losses and straggling and the stability of targets during irradiation are also discussed.

Differential cross sections of the charge-exchange reaction pi- p --> pi0 n in the momentum range from 103 to 178 MeV/c

Measured values of the differential cross sections for pion-nucleon charge exchange, pi- p --> pi0 n, are presented for pi- momenta of 103, 112, 120, 130, 139, 152, and 178 MeV/c. Complete angular distributions were obtained by using the Crystal Ball detector at the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Statistical uncertainties of the differential cross sections vary from 3% to 6% in the backward angle region, and from 6% to about 20% in the forward region with the exception of the two most forward angles. The systematic uncertainties are estimated to be about 3% for all momenta.

Cost Effective Electronics for Proportional and Drift Chambers of 'EPECUR' Experiment

'EPECUR' experiment setup is under construction at the beam line 322 of the ITEP proton synchrotron. The experiment requires several large area drift chambers to provide reasonable acceptance and fine pitch proportional chambers for beam particle tracking with total number of electronic channels of about 7000. New compact and cost effective readout system for these gaseous detectors was designed, prototyped and tested in the latest two years based on the modern technologies in analog and digital electronics, as well as in data transfer protocols. Mass production of the proportional chamber electronics is close to the end, while the boards for the drift chambers are manufactured in the amount to equip one 8-plane module. The paper presents the functional description of the whole DAQ system and its main parts together with some of the test results as an illustration of the excellent performance of the system. The appendix contains specific information which may be useful for the system users or code developers.

On the Initial Conditions for Brane Inflation

String theory gives rise to various mechanisms to generate primordial inflation, of which ``brane inflation'' is one of the most widely considered. In this scenario, inflation takes place while two branes are approaching each other, and the modulus field representing the separation between the branes plays the role of the inflaton field. We study the phase space of initial conditions which can lead to a sufficiently long period of cosmological inflation, and find that taking into account the possibility of nonvanishing initial momentum can significantly change the degree of fine tuning of the required initial conditions.
