Brain Tumor Segmentation with Special Emphasis on the Non-Enhancing Brain Tumor Compartment

A U-Net based deep learning architecture is designed to segment brain tumors as they appear on various MRI modalities. Special emphasis is lent to the non-enhancing tumor compartment. The latter has not been considered anymore in recent brain tumor segmentation challenges like the MICCAI challenges. However, it is considered to be indicative of the survival time of the patient as well as of areas of further tumor growth. Hence it deems essential to have means to automatically delineate its extension within the tumor.

An active Transverse Energy Filter based on microstructured Si-PIN diodes with an angular-selective detection efficiency

Si-PIN detectors can be microstructured to achieve angular-selective particle detection capabilities, which we call active Transverse Energy Filter (aTEF). The microstructuring consists of a honeycomb structure of deep hexagonally-shaped holes with active silicon side walls, while the bottom of the holes is made insensitive to ionizing radiation. The motivation for this kind of detector arises from the need to distinguish background electrons from signal electrons in a spectrometer of MAC-E filter type. We have demonstrated the angular-dependent detection efficiency of self-fabricated aTEF prototypes in a test setup using an angular-selective photoelectron source to illuminate the detector from various incidence angles.

Quantum repeaters with individual rare-earth ions at telecommunication wavelengths

We present a quantum repeater scheme that is based on individual erbium and europium ions. Erbium ions are attractive because they emit photons at telecommunication wavelength, while europium ions offer exceptional spin coherence for long-term storage. Entanglement between distant erbium ions is created by photon detection. The photon emission rate of each erbium ion is enhanced by a microcavity with high Purcell factor, as has recently been demonstrated. Entanglement is then transferred to nearby europium ions for storage. Gate operations between nearby ions are performed using dynamically controlled electric-dipole coupling. These gate operations allow entanglement swapping to be employed in order to extend the distance over which entanglement is distributed. The deterministic character of the gate operations allows improved entanglement distribution rates in comparison to atomic ensemble-based protocols. We also propose an approach that utilizes multiplexing in order to enhance the entanglement distribution rate.
