Coherent phonon and unconventional carriers in the magnetic kagome metal Fe$_3$Sn$_2$

Temperature- and fluence-dependent carrier dynamics of the magnetic Kagome metal Fe$_3$Sn$_2$ were studied using the ultrafast optical pump-probe technique. Two carrier relaxation processes ($\tau_1$ and $\tau_2$) and a laser induced coherent optical phonon were observed. By using the two-temperature model for metals, we ascribe the shorter relaxation $\tau_1$ (~1 ps) to hot electrons transferring their energy to the crystal lattice via electron-phonon scattering. $\tau_2$ (~25 ps), on the other hand, cannot be explained as a conventional process and is attributed to the unconventional (localized) carriers in the material. The observed coherent oscillation is assigned to be a totally symmetric A$_{1g}$ optical phonon dominated by Sn displacements out of the Kagome planes, and possesses a prominently large amplitude, on the order of 10$^{-3}$, comparable to the maximum of the reflectivity change ($\Delta$R/R). This amplitude is equivalent to charge-density-wave (CDW) systems, although no signs of such an instability were hitherto reported in Fe$_3$Sn$_2$. Our results set an unexpected connection between Fe$_3$Sn$_2$ and kagome metals with CDW instabilities, and suggest a unique interplay between phonon and electron dynamics in this compound.

Suppressed Auger scattering and tunable light emission of Landau-quantized massless Kane electrons

The Landau level laser has been proposed a long time ago as a unique source of monochromatic radiation, widely tunable in the THz and infrared spectral ranges using an externally applied magnetic field. In spite of decades of efforts, this appealing concept never resulted in the design of a reliable device. This is due to efficient Auger scattering of Landau-quantized electrons, which is an intrinsic non-radiative recombination channel that eventually gains over cyclotron emission in all materials studied so far: in conventional semiconductors with parabolic bands, but also in graphene with massless electrons. The Auger processes are favored in these systems by Landau levels (or their subsets) equally spaced in energy. Here we show that this scheme does not apply to massless Kane electrons in gapless HgCdTe alloy, in which undesirable Auger scattering is strongly suppressed and the sizeable cyclotron emission observed, for the first time in the case of massless particles. The gapless HgCdTe thus appears as a material of choice for future technology of Landau level lasers.

Slow noncollinear Coulomb scattering in the vicinity of the Dirac point in graphene

The Coulomb scattering dynamics in graphene in energetic proximity to the Dirac point is investigated by polarization resolved pump-probe spectroscopy and microscopic theory. Collinear Coulomb scattering rapidly thermalizes the carrier distribution in k-directions pointing radially away from the Dirac point. Our study reveals, however, that in almost intrinsic graphene full thermalization in all directions relying on noncollinear scattering is much slower. For low photon energies, carrier-optical-phonon processes are strongly suppressed and Coulomb mediated noncollinear scattering is remarkably slow, namely on a ps timescale. This effect is very promising for infrared and THz devices based on hot carrier effects.

Infrared nanoscopy down to liquid helium temperatures

We introduce a scattering-type scanning near-field infrared microscope (s-SNIM) for the local scale near- field sample analysis and spectroscopy from room (RT) down to liquid helium (LHe) temperatures. The extension of s-SNIM down to T = 5K is in particular crucial for low-temperature phase transitions, e.g. for the examination of superconductors, as well as low energy excitations. The LT s-SNIM performance is tested with CO2-IR excitation at T = 7K using a bare Au reference and a structured Si/SiO$_2$-sample. Furthermore, we quantify the impact of local laser heating under the s-SNIM tip apex by monitoring the light-induced ferroelectric-to-paraelectric phase transition of the skyrmion-hosting multiferroic material GaV4S8 at T$_c$ = 42K. We apply LT s-SNIM to study the spectral response of GaV$_4$S$_8$ and its lateral domain structure in the ferroelectric phase by the mid-IR to THz free-electron laser-light source FELBE at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf, Germany. Notably, our s-SNIM is based on a non-contact atomic force microscope(AFM), and thus can be complemented in-situ by various other AFM techniques, such as topography profiling, piezo-response force microscopy (PFM) and/or Kelvin-probe force microscopy (KPFM). The combination of these methods support the comprehensive study of the mutual interplay in the topographic, electronic and optical properties of surfaces from room temperature down to 5K.

Infrared/Terahertz Spectra of the Photogalvanic Effect in (Bi,Sb)Te based Three Dimensional Topological Insulators

We report on the systematic study of infrared/terahertz spectra of photocurrents in (Bi,Sb)Te based three dimensional topological insulators. We demonstrate that in a wide range of frequencies, ranging from fractions up to tens of terahertz, the photocurrent is caused by the linear photogalvanic effect (LPGE) excited in the surface states. The photocurrent spectra reveal that at low frequencies the LPGE emerges due to free carrier Drude-like absorption. The spectra allow to determine the room temperature carrier mobilities in the surface states despite the presents of thermally activate residual impurities in the material bulk. In a number of samples we observed an enhancement of the linear photogalvanic effect at frequencies between 30{\div}60 THz, which is attributed to the excitation of electrons from helical surface to bulk conduction band states. Under this condition and applying oblique incidence we also observed the circular photogalvanic effect driven by the radiation helicity.

Doubly dressed bosons - exciton-polaritons in a strong terahertz field

We demonstrate the existence of a novel quasiparticle: an exciton in a semiconductor doubly dressed with two photons of different wavelengths: near infrared cavity photon and terahertz (THz) photon, with the THz coupling strength approaching the ultra-strong coupling regime. This quasiparticle is composed of three different bosons, being a mixture of a matter-light quasiparticle. Our observations are confirmed by a detailed theoretical analysis, treating quantum mechanically all three bosonic fields. The doubly dressed quasiparticles retain the bosonic nature of their constituents, but their internal quantum structure strongly depends on the intensity of the applied terahertz field.

Ultrabroadband single-cycle terahertz pulses with peak fields of 300 kV cm$^{-1}$ from a metallic spintronic emitter

To explore the capabilities of metallic spintronic thin-film stacks as a source of intense and broadband terahertz electromagnetic fields, we excite a W/CoFeB/Pt trilayer on a large-area glass substrate (diameter of 7.5 cm) by a femtosecond laser pulse (energy 5.5 mJ, duration 40 fs, wavelength 800 nm). After focusing, the emitted terahertz pulse is measured to have a duration of 230 fs, a peak field of 300 kV cm$^{-1}$ and an energy of 5 nJ. In particular, the waveform exhibits a gapless spectrum extending from 1 to 10 THz at 10% of amplitude maximum, thereby facilitating nonlinear control over matter in this difficult-to-reach frequency range and on the sub-picosecond time scale.

Terahertz response of patterned epitaxial graphene

We study the interaction between polarized terahertz (THz) radiation and micro-structured large-area graphene in transmission geometry. In order to efficiently couple the radiation into the two-dimensional material, a lateral periodic patterning of a closed graphene sheet by intercalation doping into stripes is chosen, yielding unequal transmittance of the radiation polarized parallel and perpendicular to the stripes. Indeed, a polarization contrast up to 20% is observed. The effect even increases up to 50% when removing graphene stripes in analogy to a wire grid polarizer. The polarization dependence is analyzed in a large frequency range from < 80 GHz to 3 THz, including the plasmon-polariton resonance. The results are in excellent agreement with theoretical calculations based on the electronic energy spectrum of graphene and the electrodynamics of the patterned structure.

Ultra-fast transistor-based detectors for precise timing of near infrared and THz signals

A whole class of two-color experiments involves intense, short Terahertz radiation pulses. A fast detector that is sensitive and able to resolve both near-infrared and Terahertz pulses at the same time is highly desirable. Here we present the first detector of this kind. The detector element is a GaAs-based field effect transistor operated at room temperature. THz detection is successfully demonstrated at frequencies up to 4.9 THz. The THz detection time constant is shorter than 30 ps, the optical time constant is 150 ps. This detector is ideally suited for precise, simultaneous resolution of optical and THz pulses and for pulse characterization of high-power THz pulses up to tens of kW peak power levels. The dynamic range of the detector was as large as 65 $\pm$ 3 dB/$\sqrt{Hz}$, enabling applications in a large variety of experiments and setups, also including table-top systems.

Observation of Coulomb-Assisted Dipole-Forbidden Intraexciton Transitions in Semiconductors

We use terahertz pulses to induce resonant transitions between the eigenstates of optically generated exciton populations in a high-quality semiconductor quantum-well sample. Monitoring the excitonic photoluminescence, we observe transient quenching of the $1s$ exciton emission, which we attribute to the terahertz-induced $1s$-to-$2p$ excitation. Simultaneously, a pronounced enhancement of the $2s$-exciton emission is observed, despite the $1s$-to-$2s$ transition being dipole forbidden. A microscopic many-body theory explains the experimental observations as a Coulomb-scattering mixing of the 2$s$ and 2$p$ states, yielding an effective terahertz transition between the 1$s$ and 2$s$ populations.

Universal phase relation between longitudinal and transverse fields observed in focused terahertz beams

We directly observe longitudinal electromagnetic fields in focused freely propagating terahertz beams of radial and linear polarization. In accordance with theory, the longitudinal fields are phase shifted by a value of pi/2 with respect to the transverse field components. This behavior is found for all frequency components of single cycle THz radiation pulses. Additionally we show that the longitudinal field of a radially polarized THz beam has a smaller spot size as compared to the transverse field of a linearly polarized beam, that is focused under the same conditions.
