eta-Nucleon Scattering Length and Effective Range uncertainties

The coupled eta-N, pi-N, gamma-N, 2pi-N system is described by a K-matrix method. The parameters in this model are adjusted to get an optimal fit to pi-N-->pi-N, pi-N-->eta-N, gamma-N-->pi-N and gamma-N-->eta-N data in an energy range of about 100 MeV or so each side of the eta-threshold. Compared with our earlier analysis, we now utilize recent Crystal Ball data. However, the outcome confirms our previous result that the eta-nucleon scattering length (a) is large with a value of 0.91(6)+i0.27(2) fm.

On the nuclear states of K^- mesons

The KNNN bound states recently discovered at KEK are studied. It is shown that the Lambda(1405) and Sigma(1385) resonant states coupled to the KN system may generate an attraction strong enough to form such bound states.

A phenomenological determination of the pion-nucleon scattering lengths from pionic hydrogen

A model independent expression for the electromagnetic corrections to a phenomenological hadronic pion-nucleon scattering length, extracted from pionic hydrogen, is obtained. In a non-relativistic approach and using an extended charge distribution, these corrections are derived up to terms of order (alpha)**2 log(alpha) in the limit of a short-range hadronic interaction. We infer a charged pion-proton scattering length of 0.0870(5) in units of inverse pion mass, which gives for the charged pion-proton-neutron coupling, through the GMO relation, a value of 14.04(17).

Antiproton-proton resonant like channels in J/Psi decays into photon, proton and antiproton

The BES collaboration has recently observed a strong enhancement close to the proton-antiproton threshold in the J/Psi decays into photon, proton and antiproton. Such a structure can be explained by a traditional nucleon-antinucleon model. The near threshold 1S0 bound state and/or the well-established 3P0 resonant state found in this nucleon-antinucleon interaction can adequately describe the BES data.

The Interest in Kaonic-Deuterium Atoms

K meson-deuteron scattering lengths, atomic level shifts and widths are calculated. These quantities depend on controversial kaon-nucleon scattering amplitudes extrapolated by few MeV below the $KN$ threshold. Experimental consequences of several $KN$ interaction models are studied.

Neutrino-less Double Electron Capture - a tool to research for Majorana neutrinos

The possibility to observe the neutrino-less double $ β$ decay and thus to prove the Majorana nature of neutrino as well as provide a sensitive measure of its mass is a major challenge of to-day's neutrino physics. As an attractive alternative we propose to study the inverse process, the radiative neutrino-less double electron capture $0 ν2EC$. The associated monoenergetic photon provides a convenient experimental signature. Other advantages include the favourable ratio of the $0 ν2EC$ to the competing $2ν2EC$ capture rates and, very importantly, the existence of coincidence trigger to suppress the random background. These advantages partly offset the expected longer lifetimes. Rates for the $0γ2EC$ process are calculated. High Z atoms are strongly favoured. A resonance enhancement of the capture rates is predicted at energy release comparable to the $2P-1S$ atomic level difference. The resonance conditions are likely to be met for decays to excited states in final nuclei. Candidates for such studies are considered. The experimental feasibility is estimated and found highly encouraging.

A phenomenological negatively charged pion-proton scattering length from pionic hydrogen

We derive a closed, model independent, expression for the electromagnetic correction factor to a phenomenological hadronic scattering length extracted from a hydrogenic atom. It is obtained in a non-relativistic approach and in the limit of a short ranged hadronic interaction to terms of order ((alpha)**2)(log(alpha)) using an extended charge distribution. A hadronic negatively charged pion-proton scattering length of 0.0870(5), in units of inverse charged pion-mass, is deduced, leading to a pion-nucleon coupling constant from the GMO relation equals to 14.04(17).

On the atomic resonances in the $0 ν2EC$ transitions

The nuclear method to discover Majorana neutrinos is the neutrinoless double $ β$ decay. An interesting alternative is offered by the inverse process, neutrinoless radiative double electron capture, accompanied by a photon emission. Two different mechanisms seem plausible: the magnetic type radiation by an initial electron and the resonant electric type radiation by the final atom. The physical background for these processes is calculated.

On eta-pi mixing close to the eta-Helium threshold

A K-matrix formalism is used to relate the amplitudes for the three reactions pd --> 3He eta, pi- 3H --> 3He eta and pd --> 3H pi+. Free parameters are fitted to the available experimental data and an extrapolation below the eta 3He threshold is made to see the origin of the eta 3He threshold enhancement. The existence of a virtual -- and not a quasi-bound -- state finds support in the data. The K-matrix permits a discussion of eta-pi mixing. A mixing parameter of 0.010(5), i.e. a mixing angle theta =0.6(3) degrees, is extracted from a best fit to the very recent pd --> 3He pi0 reaction data.

Nucleon density in the nuclear periphery determined with antiprotonic x-rays: cadmium and tin isotopes

The x-ray cascade from antiprotonic atoms was studied for 106Cd, 116Cd, 112Sn, 116Sn, 120Sn, and 124Sn. Widths and shifts of the levels due to strong interaction were deduced. Isotopic effects in the Cd and Sn isotopes are clearly seen. The results are used to investigate the nucleon density in the nuclear periphery. The deduced neutron distributions are compared with the results of the previously introduced radiochemical method and with HFB calculations.

Final state interactions in the eta-d system

The eta-deuteron scattering amplitude is calculated with a recent K-matrix model of eta-N interactions. The existence of a narrow virtual state in the eta-deuteron system is inferred. This state couples strongly to the eta-d channel but its effect on final state interactions in the pn --> eta-d reaction is shown to be rather weak. Fairly large eta-N scattering lengths are allowed by the experimental data.

Optical potentials for the antiproton nucleus interactions

The nuclear interactions of atomic and low energy antiprotons are studied. Measurements of level shifts and widths in the lightest elements are analyzed and compared with new results obtained in heavy nuclei. Simple geometric properties of antiproton - nucleus interactions are demonstrated. Upon this background one finds some anomalies that indicate strong energy dependence in the subthreshold antiproton - nucleon interactions. The use of of antiproton in studies of the nuclear surface is briefly discussed.

Pion-Lambda-Sigma Coupling Extracted from Hyperonic Atoms

The latest measurements of the atomic level width in Sigma-hyperonic Pb atom offer the most accurate datum in the region of low-energy Sigma-hyperon physics. Atomic widths are due to the conversion of Sigma-nucleon into Lambda-nucleon. In high angular momentum states this conversion is dominated by the one-pion exchange. A joint analysis of the data of the scattering of negative-Sigma on proton converting into a Lambda and a neutron and of the atomic widths allows to extract a pseudovector pion-hyperon-Sigma coupling constant of 0.048 with a statistical error of +-0.005 and a systematic one of +-0.004. This corresponds to a pseudoscalar coupling constant of 13.3 with a statistical uncertainty of 1.4 and a systematic one of 1.1.

Uncertainties in the eta-Nucleon Scattering Length and Effective Range

The coupled eta-N, pi-N, gamma-N system is described by a K-matrix method. The parameters in this model are adjusted to get an optimal fit to pi-N --->pi- N$, pi-N --->eta-N$, gamma-N--->pi-N and gamma-N --->eta-N data in an energy range of about 100MeV or so each side of the eta threshold. The outcome is the appearance of two solutions one which has an eta-nucleon scattering length (a) of about 1.0 fm and a second with a~0.2fm. However, the second solution has an unconventional non-Lorentian form for the T-matrix in the region of the 1535(20)MeV and 1650(30)MeV S-wave pi-N resonances.

A coupled K-matrix description of the reactions pi+N -> pi+N, pi+N -> eta+N, gamma+N -> pi+N and gamma+N -> eta+N

The coupled pi+N, eta+N, gamma+N systems are described by a K-matrix method. The parameters in this model are adjusted to get an optimal fit to pi+N -> pi+N, pi+N -> eta+N, gamma+N -> pi+N and gamma+N -> eta+N data in an energy range of about 100 MeV each side of the eta-threshold. The coupling of photons to the N(1535) state is extracted and also an alternative to the current S11(gamma+N -> pi+N) amplitudes suggested. Expansions are given for the eta-eta and gamma-eta amplitudes in terms of the eta-momentum. Effects of interference of this state with background potential interactions are discussed and experimental consequences are indicated.

Composition of the nuclear periphery from antiproton absorption

Thirteen targets with mass numbers from 58 to 238 were irradiated with the antiproton beam from the Low Energy Antiproton Ring facility at CERN leading to the formation of antiprotonic atoms of these heavy elements. The antiproton capture at the end of an atomic cascade results in the production of more or less excited residual nuclei. The targets were selected with the criterion that both reaction products with one nucleon less than the proton and neutron number of the target be radioactive. The yield of these radioactive products after stopped-antiproton annihilation was determined using gamma-ray spectroscopy techniques. This yield is related to the proton and neutron density in the target nucleus at a radial distance corresponding to the antiproton annihilation site. The experimental data clearly indicate the existence of a neutron-rich nuclear periphery, a "neutron halo", strongly correlated with the target neutron separation energy Bn and observed for targets with Bn < 10 MeV. For two-target nuclei 106Cd and 144Sm, with larger neutron binding energies, a proton-rich nuclear periphery was observed. Most of the experimental data are in reasonable agreement with calculations based on current antiproton-nucleus and pion-nucleus interaction potentials and on nuclear densities deduced with the help of the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approach. This approach was, however, unable to account for the 106Cd and 144Sm results.
