Nodeless superconductivity in the SnAs-based van der Waals type superconductor NaSn2As2

We grew the single crystals of the SnAs-based van der Waals (vdW)-type superconductor NaSn$_2$As$_2$ and systematically measured its resistivity, specific heat, and ultralow-temperature thermal conductivity. The superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ = 1.60 K of our single crystal is 0.3 K higher than that previously reported. A weak but intrinsic anomaly situated at 193 K is observed in both resistivity and specific heat, which likely arises from a charge-density-wave (CDW) instability. Ultralow-temperature thermal conductivity measurements reveal a fully-gapped superconducting state with a negligible residual linear term in zero magnetic field, and the field dependence of $κ_0 / T$ further suggests NaSn$_2$As$_2$ is an $s$-wave superconductor.

Wiedemann-Franz law and abrupt change in conductivity across the pseudogap critical point of a cuprate superconductor

The thermal conductivity $κ$ of the cuprate superconductor La$_{1.6-x}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ was measured down to 50 mK in seven crystals with doping from $p=0.12$ to $p=0.24$, both in the superconducting state and in the magnetic field-induced normal state. We obtain the electronic residual linear term $κ_0/T$ as $T \to 0$ across the pseudogap critical point $p^{\star}= 0.23$. In the normal state, we observe an abrupt drop in $κ_0/T$ upon crossing below $p^{\star}$, consistent with a drop in carrier density $n$ from $1 + p$ to $p$, the signature of the pseudogap phase inferred from the Hall coefficient. A similar drop in $κ_0/T$ is observed at $H=0$, showing that the pseudogap critical point and its signatures are unaffected by the magnetic field. In the normal state, the Wiedemann-Franz law, $κ_0/T=L_0/ρ(0)$, is obeyed at all dopings, including at the critical point where the electrical resistivity $ρ(T)$ is $T$-linear down to $T \to 0$. We conclude that the non-superconducting ground state of the pseudogap phase at $T=0$ is a metal whose fermionic excitations carry heat and charge as conventional electrons do.

Ultralow-temperature heat transport in the quantum spin liquid candidate Ca10Cr7O28 with bilayer kagome lattice

Recently, a novel material with bilayer kagome lattice Ca$_{10}$Cr$_7$O$_{28}$ was proposed to be a gapless quantum spin liquid, due to the lack of long-range magnetic order and the observation of broad diffuse excitations. Here, we present the ultralow-temperature thermal conductivity measurements on single crystals of Ca$_{10}$Cr$_7$O$_{28}$ to detect its low-lying magnetic excitations. At finite temperatures, with increasing the magnetic fields, the thermal conductivity exhibits a clear dip around 6 T, which may correspond to a crossover in the magnetic ground state. At the zero-temperature limit, no residual linear term is found at any fields, indicating the absence of gapless itinerant fermionic excitations. Therefore, if the spinons do exist, they are either localized or gapped. In the gapped case, the fitting of our data gives a small gap $Δ\sim$ 0.27(2) K. These results put strong constraints on the theoretical description of the ground state in this quantum spin liquid candidate.

Mermin-Wagner physics, (H,T) phase diagram, and candidate quantum spin-liquid phase in the spin-1/2 triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Ba8CoNb6O24

Ba$_8$CoNb$_6$O$_{24}$ presents a system whose Co$^{2+}$ ions have an effective spin 1/2 and construct a regular triangular-lattice antiferromagnet (TLAFM) with a very large interlayer spacing, ensuring purely two-dimensional character. We exploit this ideal realization to perform a detailed experimental analysis of the $S = 1/2$ TLAFM, which is one of the keystone models in frustrated quantum magnetism. We find strong low-energy spin fluctuations and no magnetic ordering, but a diverging correlation length down to 0.1 K, indicating a Mermin-Wagner trend towards zero-temperature order. Below 0.1 K, however, our low-field measurements show an nexpected magnetically disordered state, which is a candidate quantum spin liquid. We establish the $(H,T)$ phase diagram, mapping in detail the quantum fluctuation corrections to the available theoretical analysis. These include a strong upshift in field of the maximum ordering temperature, qualitative changes to both low- and high-field phase boundaries, and an ordered regime apparently dominated by the collinear "up-up-down" state. Ba$_8$CoNb$_6$O$_{24}$ therefore offers fresh input for the development of theoretical approaches to the field-induced quantum phase transitions of the $S = 1/2$ Heisenberg TLAFM.

Discrete superconducting phases in FeSe-derived superconductors

A general feature of unconventional superconductors is the existence of a superconducting dome in the phase diagram as a function of carrier concentration. For the simplest iron-based superconductor FeSe (with transition temperature Tc ~ 8 K), its Tc can be greatly enhanced by doping electrons via many routes, even up to 65 K in monolayer FeSe/SiTiO3. However, a clear phase diagram with carrier concentration for FeSe-derived superconductors is still lacking. Here, we report the observation of a series of discrete superconducting phases in FeSe thin flakes by continuously tuning carrier concentration through the intercalation of Li and Na ions with a solid ionic gating technique. Such discrete superconducting phases are robust against the substitution of Se by 20% S, but are vulnerable to the substitution of Fe by 2% Cu, highlighting the importance of the iron site being intact. A complete superconducting phase diagram for FeSe-derivatives is given, which is distinct from other unconventional superconductors.

Experimental Approach to the Thermodynamics of the Pure Two-Dimensional Spin-1/2 Triangular Lattice Antiferromagnet in Ba8CoNb6O24

Frustrated quantum magnets pose well-defined questions concerning quantum fluctuation effects and the nature of the many-body wavefunction, which challenge theory, numerics, experiment and materials synthesis. The S = 1/2 triangular-lattice antiferromagnet (TLAF) presents a case where classical order is strongly suppressed by quantum fluctuations, leading to extensive renormalization of physical properties at all energy scales. However, purely two-dimensional (2D) models are difficult to realise in the 3D world and their physics is controlled by the Mermin-Wagner theorem, which describes the dominant effects of additional thermal fluctuations. Here we report the magnetic properties Ba8CoNb6O24, whose Co2+ions have an effective spin 1/2 and construct a regular TLAF with very large interlayer spacing. We find no magnetic ordering down to 0.028 K, strong low-energy spin fluctuations in qualitative agreement with theoretical analysis and a diverging correlation length, all indicating a Mermin-Wagner trend towards zero-temperature ordering in this ideal 2D system.

Ultralow-temperature thermal conductivity of the Kitaev honeycomb magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$ across the field-induced phase transition

Recently, there have been increasingly hot debates on whether there exists a quantum spin liquid in the Kitaev honeycomb magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$ in high magnetic field. To investigate this issue, we perform the ultralow-temperature thermal conductivity measurements on the single crystals of $α$-RuCl$_3$ down to 80 mK and up to 9 T. Our experiments clearly show a field-induced phase transition occurring at $H_c$ $\approx$ 7.5 T, above which the zigzag magnetic order is completely suppressed. The minimum of thermal conductivity at 7.5 T is attributed to the strong scattering of phonons by the magnetic fluctuations. Most importantly, above 7.5 T, we do not observe any significant contribution of thermal conductivity from gapless magnetic excitations, which puts a strong constraint on the nature of the high-field phase of $α$-RuCl$_3$.

Two-dimensional Superconductivity from Dimerization of Atomically Ordered AuTe2Se4/3 Cubes

The emergent phenomena such as superconductivity and topological phase transitions can be observed in strict two-dimensional crystalline matters. Artificial interfaces and one atomic thickness layers are typical 2D materials of this kind. Although having 2D characters, most bulky layered compounds, however, do not possess these striking properties. Here, we report the 2D superconductivity in bulky AuTe2Se4/3,where the reduction in dimensionality is achieved through inducing the elongated covalent Te-Te bonds. The atomic-resolution images reveal that the Au, Te and Se are atomically ordered in a cube, among which are Te-Te bonds of 3.18 A and 3.28 A. The superconductivity at 2.85 K is discovered, which is unraveled to be the quasi-2D nature owing to the BKT topological transition. The nesting of nearly parallel Fermi sheets could give rise to strong electron-phonon coupling. It is proposed to further depleting the thickness could result in more topologically-related phenomena.

Heat transport study of the spin liquid candidate 1T-TaS2

We present the ultra-low-temperature thermal conductivity measurements on single crystals of the prototypical charge-density-wave material 1$T$-TaS$_2$, which was recently argued to be a candidate for quantum spin liquid. Our experiments show that the residual linear term of thermal conductivity at zero field is essentially zero, within the experimental accuracy. Furthermore, the thermal conductivity is found to be insensitive to the magnetic field up to 9 T. These results clearly demonstrate the absence of itinerant magnetic excitations with fermionic statistics in bulk 1$T$-TaS$_2$ and, thus, put a strong constraint on the theories of the ground state of this material.

Electronic structure of FeS

Here we report the electronic structure of FeS, a recently identified iron-based superconductor. Our high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy studies show two hole-like ($α$ and $β$) and two electron-like ($η$ and $δ$) Fermi pockets around the Brillouin zone center and corner, respectively, all of which exhibit moderate dispersion along $k_z$. However, a third hole-like band ($γ$) is not observed, which is expected around the zone center from band calculations and is common in iron-based superconductors. Since this band has the highest renormalization factor and is known to be the most vulnerable to defects, its absence in our data is likely due to defect scattering --- and yet superconductivity can exist without coherent quasiparticles in the $γ$ band. This may help resolve the current controversy on the superconducting gap structure of FeS. Moreover, by comparing the $β$ bandwidths of various iron chalcogenides, including FeS, FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_x$, FeSe, and FeSe$_{1-x}$ Te$_x$, we find that the $β$ bandwidth of FeS is the broadest. However, the band renormalization factor of FeS is still quite large, when compared with the band calculations, which indicates sizable electron correlations. This explains why the unconventional superconductivity can persist over such a broad range of isovalent substitution in FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_{x}$ and FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_{x}$.

Absence of magnetic thermal conductivity in the quantum spin liquid candidate YbMgGaO4

We present the ultra-low-temperature specific heat and thermal conductivity measurements on the single crystals of YbMgGaO$_4$, which was recently argued to be a promising candidate for quantum spin liquid (QSL). In the zero magnetic field, a large magnetic contribution of specific heat is observed, and exhibits a power-law temperature dependence ($C_m \sim T^{0.74}$). On the contrary, we do not observed any significant contribution of thermal conductivity from magnetic excitations. In magnetic fields $H \ge$ 6 T, the exponential $T$-dependence of $C_m$ and the enhanced thermal conductivity indicate a magnon gap of the fully-polarized state. The absence of magnetic thermal conductivity at the zero field in this QSL candidate puts a strong constraint on the theories of its ground state.

Multiband nodeless superconductivity near the charge-density-wave quantum critical point in ZrTe3-xSex

Recently it was found that selenium doping can suppress the charge-density-wave (CDW) order and induce bulk superconductivity in ZrTe$_3$. The observed superconducting dome suggests the existence of a CDW quantum critical point (QCP) in ZrTe$_{3-x}$Se$_x$ near $x \approx$ 0.04. To elucidate its superconducting state near the CDW QCP, we measure the thermal conductivity of two ZrTe$_{3-x}$Se$_x$ single crystals ($x$ = 0.044 and 0.051) down to 80 mK. For both samples, the residual linear term $κ_0/T$ at zero field is negligible, which is a clear evidence for nodeless superconducting gap. Furthermore, the field dependence of $κ_0/T$ manifests multigap behavior. These results demonstrate multiple nodeless superconducting gaps in ZrTe$_{3-x}$Se$_x$, which indicates conventional superconductivity despite of the existence of a CDW QCP.

Fully gapped superconducting state in Au2Pb: a natural candidate for topological superconductor

We measured the ultra-low-temperature specific heat and thermal conductivity of Au$_2$Pb single crystal, a possible three-dimensional Dirac semimetal with a superconducting transition temperature $T_c \approx$ 1.05 K. The electronic specific heat can be fitted by a two-band s-wave model, which gives the gap amplitudes $Δ_1$(0)/$k_BT_c$ = 1.38 and $Δ_2$(0)/$k_BT_c$ = 5.25. From the thermal conductivity measurements, a negligible residual linear term $κ_0/T$ in zero field and a slow field dependence of $κ_0/T$ at low field are obtained. These results suggest that Au$_2$Pb has a fully gapped superconducting state in the bulk, which is a necessary condition for topological superconductor if Au$_2$Pb is indeed one.

Nodal superconductivity in FeS: Evidence from quasiparticle heat transport

We report low-temperature heat transport measurements on superconducting iron sulfide FeS with $T_c \approx$ 5 K, which has the same crystal structure and similar electronic band structure to the superconducting iron selenide FeSe. In zero magnetic field, a significant residual linear term $κ_0/T$ is observed. At low field, $κ_0/T$ increases rapidly with the increase of field. These results provide strong evidence for nodal superconducting gap in FeS. We compare it with the sister compound FeSe, and other iron-based superconductors with nodal gap.

Observation of two distinct superconducting domes under pressure in tetragonal FeS

As the simplest iron-based superconductor, FeSe forms a tetragonal structure with transition temperature Tc ~ 8 K. With assistance of pressure, or other techniques, Tc can be greatly enhanced, even to above liquid nitrogen temperature. The newly discovered superconducting tetragonal FeS (Tc ~ 4.5 K), a sulfide counterpart of FeSe, promotes us on its high pressure investigation. The transport and structure evolution of FeS with pressure have been studied. A rapid suppression of Tc and vanishing of superconductivity at 4.0 GPa are observed, followed by a second superconducting dome with a 30% enhancement in maximum Tc. An onsite tetragonal to hexagonal phase transition occurs around 7.0 GPa, followed by a broad pressure range of phase coexistence. The residual deformed tetragonal phase is considered as the source of second superconducting dome. The observation of two superconducting domes in iron-based superconductors poses great challenges for understanding their pairing mechanism.

Pressure-induced superconductivity in the three-dimensional Dirac semimetal Cd3As2

The recently discovered Dirac and Weyl semimetals are new members of topological materials. Starting from them, topological superconductivity may be achieved, e.g. by carrier doping or applying pressure. Here we report high-pressure resistance and X-ray diffraction study of the three-dimensional topological Dirac semimetal Cd3As2. Superconductivity with Tc ~ 2.0 K is observed at 8.5 GPa. The Tc keeps increasing to about 4.0 K at 21.3 GPa, then shows a nearly constant pressure dependence up to the highest pressure 50.9 GPa. The X-ray diffraction measurements reveal a structure phase transition around 3.5 GPa. Our observation of superconductivity in pressurized topological Dirac semimetal Cd3As2 provides a new candidate for topological superconductor, as argued in a recent point contact study and a theoretical work.

Bulk Fermi surface of charge-neutral excitations in SmB6 or not: a heat-transport study

Recently there have been increasingly hot debates on whether a bulk Fermi surface of charge-neutral excitations exists in the topological Kondo insulator SmB6. To unambiguously resolve this issue, we performed the low-temperature thermal conductivity measurements of a high-quality SmB6 single crystal down to 0.1 K and up to 14.5 T. Our experiments show that the residual linear term of thermal conductivity at zero field is zero, within the experimental accuracy. Furthermore, the thermal conductivity is insensitive to magnetic field up to 14.5 T. These results exclude the existence of fermionic charge-neutral excitations in bulk SmB6, such as scalar Majorana fermions or spinons, thus put a strong constraint on the explanation of the quantum oscillations observed in SmB6.

Multiple nodeless superconducting gaps in noncentrosymmetric superconductor PbTaSe2 with topological bulk nodal lines

Low-temperature thermal conductivity measurements were performed on single crystal of PbTaSe$_2$, a noncentrosymmetric superconductor with topological bulk nodal lines in the electronic band structure. It is found that the residual linear term $κ_0/T$ is negligible in zero magnetic field. Furthermore, the field dependence of $κ_0/T$ exhibits a clear "$S$"-shape curve. These results suggest that PbTaSe$_2$ has multiple nodeless superconducting gaps. Therefore, the spin-triplet state with gap nodes does not play an important role in this noncentrosymmetric superconductor with strong spin-orbital coupling. The fully gapped superconducting state also meets the requirement of a topological superconductor, if PbTaSe$_2$ is indeed the case.
