Absolute Energy Calibration of X-ray TESs with 0.04 eV Uncertainty at 6.4 keV in a Hadron-Beam Environment

A performance evaluation of superconducting transition-edge sensors (TESs) in the environment of a pion beam line at a particle accelerator is presented. Averaged across the 209 functioning sensors in the array, the achieved energy resolution is 5.2 eV FWHM at Co $K_α$ (6.9 keV) when the pion beam is off and 7.3 eV at a beam rate of 1.45 MHz. Absolute energy uncertainty of $\pm$0.04 eV is demonstrated for Fe $K_α$ (6.4 keV) with in-situ energy calibration obtained from other nearby known x-ray lines. To achieve this small uncertainty, it is essential to consider the non-Gaussian energy response of the TESs and thermal cross-talk pile-up effects due to charged-particle hits in the silicon substrate of the TES array.

7Be Solar Neutrino Measurement with KamLAND

We report a measurement of the neutrino-electron elastic scattering rate of 862 keV 7Be solar neutrinos based on a 165.4 kton-day exposure of KamLAND. The observed rate is 582 +/- 90 (kton-day)^-1, which corresponds to a 862 keV 7Be solar neutrino flux of (3.26 +/- 0.50) x 10^9 cm^-2s^-1, assuming a pure electron flavor flux. Comparing this flux with the standard solar model prediction and further assuming three flavor mixing, a nu_e survival probability of 0.66 +/- 0.14 is determined from the KamLAND data. Utilizing a global three flavor oscillation analysis, we obtain a total 7Be solar neutrino flux of (5.82 +/- 0.98) x 10^9 cm^-2s^-1, which is consistent with the standard solar model predictions.

DIOS: the dark baryon exploring mission

DIOS (Diffuse Intergalactic Oxygen Surveyor) is a small satellite aiming for a launch around 2020 with JAXA's Epsilon rocket. Its main aim is a search for warm-hot intergalactic medium with high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy of redshifted emission lines from OVII and OVIII ions. The superior energy resolution of TES microcalorimeters combined with a very wide field of view (30--50 arcmin diameter) will enable us to look into gas dynamics of cosmic plasmas in a wide range of spatial scales from Earth's magnetosphere to unvirialized regions of clusters of galaxies. Mechanical and thermal design of the spacecraft and development of the TES calorimeter system are described. We also consider revising the payload design to optimize the scientific capability allowed by the boundary conditions of the small mission.

Shot Analysis of Kepler Blazar W2R 1926+42

Blazars show rapid and violent variabilities, which timescale are often less than a day. We studied intraday variations by applying a shot analysis technique to Kepler monitoring of blazar W2R 1926+42 in Quarter 14. We obtained a mean profile calculated from 195 rapid variations. The mean profile shows three components; one is a sharp structure distributed within $\pm$0.1 day of the peak, and two slow-varying components. This spiky-peak component reflects features of rapid variations directly. The profile of peak component shows an exponential rise and decay of which timescales are different, 0.0416 and 0.0588 day respectively. This component is too sharp to represent a standard function which is often used to express blazar variations. This asymmetric profile at the peak is difficult to be explained by a simple variation of the Doppler factor by changing a geometry of the emitting region. This result indicates that intraday variations arise from a production of high-energy accelerated particles in the jet.

ASTRO-H White Paper - Stellar-Mass Black Holes

Thanks to extensive observations with X-ray missions and facilities working in other wavelengths, as well as rapidly--advancing numerical simulations of accretion flows, our knowledge of astrophysical black holes has been remarkably enriched. Rapid progress has opened new areas of enquiry, including measurements of black hole spin, the properties and driving mechanisms of jets and disk winds, the impact of feedback into local environments, the origin of periodic and aperiodic X-ray variations, and the nature of super-Eddington accretion flows, among others. The goal of this White Paper is to illustrate how ASTRO-H can make dramatic progress in the study of astrophysical black holes, particularly the study of black hole X-ray binaries.

Multi-dimensional Features of Neutrino Transfer in Core-Collapse Supernovae

We study the multi-dimensional properties of neutrino transfer inside supernova cores by solving the Boltzmann equations for neutrino distribution functions in genuinely six dimensional (6D) phase space. Adopting representative snapshots of the post-bounce core from other supernova simulations in three dimensions, we solve the temporal evolutions to stationary states of neutrino distribution functions by our Boltzmann solver. Taking advantage of the multi-angle and multi-energy feature realized by the S$_n$ method in our code, we reveal the genuine characteristics of spatially three dimensional (3D) neutrino transfer such as non-radial fluxes and non-diagonal Eddington tensors. In addition, we assess the ray-by-ray approximation, turning off the lateral-transport terms in our code. We demonstrate that the ray-by-ray approximation tends to propagate fluctuations in thermodynamical states around the neutrino-sphere along each radial ray and overestimate the variations between the neutrino distributions on different radial rays. We find that the difference in the densities and fluxes of neutrinos between the ray-by-ray approximation and the full Boltzmann transport becomes ~20%, which is also the case for the local heating rate, whereas the volume-integrated heating rate in the Boltzmann transport is found to be only slightly larger (~2%) than the counterpart in the ray-by-ray approximation due to cancellation among different rays. These results suggest that we had better assess carefully the possible influences of various approximations in the neutrino transfer employed in the current simulations on supernova dynamics. Detailed information on the angle and energy moments of neutrino distribution functions will be profitable for the future development of numerical methods in neutrino-radiation hydrodynamics.

A Compton thick AGN in the barred spiral NGC 4785

We present X-ray observations of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) in NGC 4785. The source is a local Seyfert 2 which has not been studied so far in much detail. It was recently detected with high significance in the 15-60 keV band in the 66 month Swift/BAT all sky survey, but there have been no prior pointed X-ray observations of this object. With Suzaku, we clearly detect the source below 10 keV, and find it to have a flat continuum and prominent neutral iron fluorescence line with equivalent width >~1 keV. Fitting the broadband spectra with physical reflection models shows the source to be a bona fide Compton thick AGN with Nh of at least 2x10^{24} cm^{-2} and absorption-corrected 2-10 keV X-ray power L(2-10) ~ few times 10^{42} erg s^{-1}. Realistic uncertainties on L(2-10) computed from the joint confidence interval on the intrinsic power law continuum photon index and normalization are at least a factor of 10. The local bona fide Compton thick AGN population is highly heterogeneous in terms of WISE mid-infrared source colours, and the nucleus of NGC 4785 appears especially sub-dominant in the mid-infrared when comparing to other Compton thick AGN. Such sources would not be easily found using mid-infrared selection alone. The extent of host galaxy extinction to the nucleus is not clear, though NGC 4785 shows a complex core with a double bar and inner disk, adding to the list of known Compton thick AGN in barred host galaxies.

Property of LCP-GEM in Pure Dimethyl Ether at Low Pressure

We present a systematic investigation of the gain properties of a gas electron multiplier (GEM) foil in pure dimethyl ether (DME) at low pressures. The GEM is made from copper- clad liquid crystal polymer insulator (LCP-GEM) designed for space use, and is applied to a time projection chamber filled with low-pressure DME gas to observe the linear polarization of cosmic X-rays. We have measured gains of a 100 um-thick LCP-GEM as a function of the voltage between GEM electrodes at various gas pressures ranging from 10 to 190 Torr with 6.4 keV X-rays. The highest gain at 190 Torr is about 2x10^4, while that at 20 Torr is about 500. We find that the pressure and electric-field dependence of the GEM gain is described by the first Townsend coefficient. The energy scale from 4.5 to 8.0 keV is linear with non-linearity of less than 1.4% above 30 Torr.

CeLAND: search for a 4th light neutrino state with a 3 PBq 144Ce-144Pr electron antineutrino generator in KamLAND

The reactor neutrino and gallium anomalies can be tested with a 3-4 PBq (75-100 kCi scale) 144Ce-144Pr antineutrino beta-source deployed at the center or next to a large low-background liquid scintillator detector. The antineutrino generator will be produced by the Russian reprocessing plant PA Mayak as early as 2014, transported to Japan, and deployed in the Kamioka Liquid Scintillator Anti-Neutrino Detector (KamLAND) as early as 2015. KamLAND's 13 m diameter target volume provides a suitable environment to measure the energy and position dependence of the detected neutrino flux. A characteristic oscillation pattern would be visible for a baseline of about 10 m or less, providing a very clean signal of neutrino disappearance into a yet-unknown, sterile neutrino state. This will provide a comprehensive test of the electron dissaperance neutrino anomalies and could lead to the discovery of a 4th neutrino state for Delta_m^2 > 0.1 eV^2 and sin^2(2theta) > 0.05.

High-resolution kaonic-atom x-ray spectroscopy with transition-edge-sensor microcalorimeters

We are preparing for an ultra-high resolution x-ray spectroscopy of kaonic atoms using an x-ray spectrometer based on an array of superconducting transition-edge-sensor microcalorimeters developed by NIST. The instrument has excellent energy resolutions of 2 - 3 eV (FWHM) at 6 keV and a large collecting area of about 20 mm^2. This will open new door to investigate kaon-nucleus strong interaction and provide new accurate charged-kaon mass value.

Large enhancement in the generation efficiency of pure spin currents in Ge using Heusler-compound Co_2FeSi electrodes

We show nonlocal spin transport in n-Ge based lateral spin-valve devices with highly ordered Co_2FeSi/n^+-Ge Schottky tunnel contacts. Clear spin-valve signals and Hanle-effect curves are demonstrated at low temperatures, indicating generation, manipulation, and detection of pure spin currents in n-Ge. The obtained spin generation efficiency of ~ 0.12 is about two orders of magnitude larger than that for a device with Fe/MgO tunnel-barrier contacts reported previously. Taking the spin related behavior with temperature evolution into account, we infer that it is necessary to simultaneously demonstrate the high spin generation efficiency and improve the quality of the transport channel for achieving Ge based spintronic devices.

White paper: CeLAND - Investigation of the reactor antineutrino anomaly with an intense 144Ce-144Pr antineutrino source in KamLAND

We propose to test for short baseline neutrino oscillations, implied by the recent reevaluation of the reactor antineutrino flux and by anomalous results from the gallium solar neutrino detectors. The test will consist of producing a 75 kCi 144Ce - 144Pr antineutrino source to be deployed in the Kamioka Liquid Scintillator Anti-Neutrino Detector (KamLAND). KamLAND's 13m diameter target volume provides a suitable environment to measure energy and position dependence of the detected neutrino flux. A characteristic oscillation pattern would be visible for a baseline of about 10 m or less, providing a very clean signal of neutrino disappearance into a yet-unknown, "sterile" state. Such a measurement will be free of any reactor-related uncertainties. After 1.5 years of data taking the Reactor Antineutrino Anomaly parameter space will be tested at > 95% C.L.

Hardening and termination of long-duration gamma rays detected prior to lightning

We report the first observation of 3$-$30 MeV prolonged gamma-ray emission that was abruptly terminated by lightning. The gamma-ray detection was made during winter thunderstorms on December 30, 2010 by the Gamma-Ray Observation of Winter THunderclouds (GROWTH) experiment carried out in a coastal area along the Sea of Japan. The gamma-ray flux lasted for less than 3 min, continuously hardening closer to the lightning occurrence. The hardening at energies of 3$-$10 MeV energies was most prominent. The gamma-ray flux abruptly ceased less than 800 ms before the lightning flash that occurred over 5 km away from the experimental site. In addition, we observed a clear difference in the duration of the 3$-$10 MeV gamma rays and those $>$10 MeV, suggesting that the area of $>$10 MeV gamma-ray emission is considerably smaller than that of the lower-energy gamma rays. This work may give a manifestation that a local region emitting prolonged gamma rays connects with a distant region to initiate lightning.

Reflection-dominated nuclear X-ray emission in the early-type galaxy ESO 565--G019

We present the discovery of a reflection-dominated active galactic nucleus (AGN) in the early-type radio-quiet galaxy ESO 565--G019 with Suzaku and Swift/BAT. The source X-ray spectrum below 10 keV is characteristic of other Compton-thick (CT) AGN, clearly showing an inverted continuum and prodigious fluorescence iron emission above ~3 keV. A Compton shoulder to the neutral Fe Kalpha line also appears to be present. There is evidence for long-term hard X-ray flux variability which we associate with changes in the intrinsic AGN power-law. The increasing sensitivity of ongoing and new hard X-ray surveys means that more such reflection-dominated AGN ought to be uncovered in the near future. ESO 565--G019 is hosted in an early-type galaxy whose morphology has been variously classified as either type E or type S0. Only about 20 bona fide CT-AGN have been identified in the local universe so far, and all exist in host galaxies with late Hubble types (S0 or later). CT columns of nuclear obscuring gas are uncommon in early-type galaxies in the local universe, so confirmation of the exact morphological class of ESO 565--G019 is important. Infrared photometry also shows the presence of large quantities of cool dust in the host, indicative of significant ongoing star-formation. ESO 565--G019 may be the first identified local example of minor-merger driven CT-AGN growth in an early-type host, or may be the result of interaction with its neighboring galaxy ESO 565--G018 in a wide pair.

A Search for Nucleon Decay via $n \rightarrow \barν π^{0}$ and $p \rightarrow \barν π^{+}$ in Super-Kamiokande

We present the results of searches for nucleon decay via bound neutron to antineutrino plus pizero and proton to antineutrino plus piplus using data from a combined 172.8 kiloton-years exposure of Super-Kamiokande-I, -II, and -III. We set lower limits on the partial lifetime for each of these modes. For antineutrino pizero, the partial lifetime is >1.1x10^{33} years; for antineutrino piplus, the partial lifetime is >3.9x10^{32} years at 90% confidence level.

Room-temperature detection of spin accumulation in silicon across Schottky tunnel barriers using a MOSFET structure

Using a metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET) structure with a high-quality CoFe/n^+Si contact, we systematically study spin injection and spin accumulation in a nondegenerated Si channel with a doping density of ~ 4.5*10^15cm^-3 at room temperature. By applying the gate voltage (V_G) to the channel, we obtain sufficient bias currents (I_Bias) for creating spin accumulation in the channel and observe clear spin-accumulation signals even at room temperature. Whereas the magnitude of the spin signals is enhanced by increasing I_Bias, it is reduced by increasing V_G interestingly. These features can be understood within the framework of the conventional spin diffusion model. As a result, a room-temperature spin injection technique for the nondegenerated Si channel without using insulating tunnel barriers is established, which indicates a technological progress for Si-based spintronic applications with gate electrodes.

New constraint on the existence of the mu+-> e+ gamma decay

The analysis of a combined data set, totaling 3.6 \times 10^14 stopped muons on target, in the search for the lepton flavour violating decay mu^+ -> e^+ gamma is presented. The data collected by the MEG experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institut show no excess of events compared to background expectations and yield a new upper limit on the branching ratio of this decay of 5.7 \times 10^-13 (90% confidence level). This represents a four times more stringent limit than the previous world best limit set by MEG.

Giant enhancement of spin pumping efficiency using Fe3Si ferromagnet

Spincurrentronics, which involves the generation, propagation and control of spin currents, has attracted a great deal of attention because of the possibility of realizing dissipation-free information propagation. Whereas electrical generation of spin currents originally made the field of spincurrentronics possible, and significant advances in spin-current devices has been made, novel spin-current-generation approaches such as dynamical methods have also been vigorously investigated. However, the low spin-current generation efficiency associated with dynamical methods has impeded further progress towards practical spin devices. Here we show that by introducing a Heusler-type ferromagnetic material, Fe3Si, pure spin currents can be generated about twenty times more efficiently using a dynamical method. This achievement paves the way to the development of novel spin-based devices.
