Exciton g-factors in monolayer and bilayer WSe$_2$ from experiment and theory

The optical properties of monolayer and bilayer transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors are governed by excitons in different spin and valley configurations, providing versatile aspects for van der Waals heterostructures and devices. We present experimental and theoretical studies of exciton energy splittings in external magnetic field in neutral and charged WSe$_2$ monolayer and bilayer crystals embedded in a field effect device for active doping control. We develop theoretical methods to calculate the exciton $g$-factors from first principles and tight-binding for all possible spin-valley configurations of excitons in monolayer and bilayer WSe$_2$ including valley-indirect exciton configurations. Our theoretical and experimental findings shed light on some of the characteristic photoluminescence peaks observed for monolayer and bilayer WSe$_2$. In more general terms, the theoretical aspects of our work provide new guidelines for the characterization of single and few-layer transition metal dichalcogenides, as well as their heterostructures, in the presence of external magnetic fields.

Non-Markovian pure dephasing in a dielectric excited by a few-cycle laser pulse

We develop the theory of pure dephasing in a solid exposed to an ultrashort laser pulse beyond the commonly used Markov approximation. This approach takes into account the finite cutoff energy of the bath and can be applied to both many-particle and phonon environments. With numerical simulations performed with the time-dependent Hartree-Fock equations, we investigate how the excitation probability and high-harmonic generation are described by different models of decoherence. It is shown that the time-dependent rates allow for temporally high dephasing to successfully reproduce the main features of high-harmonics spectrum and avoid an overestimation of the charge carrier population after the pulse, which is a common problem of the Markov approximation.

Photoluminescence of a quantum-dot molecule

We formulate a theory of low-temperature, stationary photoluminescence from a quantum-dot molecule composed of two spherical quantum dots whose electronic subsystems are resonantly coupled via the Coulomb interaction. We show that the coupling leads to the hybridization of the first excited states of the quantum dots, manifesting itself as a pair of photoluminescence peaks with intensities and spectral positions strongly dependent on the geometric, material, and relaxation parameters of the quantum-dot molecule. These parameters are explicitly contained in the analytical expression for the photoluminescence differential cross section derived in the paper. The developed theory and expression obtained are essential in interpreting and analyzing spectroscopic data on the secondary emission of coherently coupled quantum systems.
