Evolution of Parton Distribution Functions in the Short-Distance Factorization Scheme

Lattice QCD offers the possibility of computing parton distributions from first principles, although not in the usual $\overline{MS}$ factorization scheme. We study in this paper the evolution of non-singlet parton distribution functions (PDFs) in the short-distance factorization scheme which notably arises in lattice calculations in the pseudo-distribution approach. We provide an assessment of non-perturbative evolution of PDFs from already published lattice matrix elements, and show how this evolution can be used to reduce the fluctuation of the lattice data. We compare our result with expectations obtained thanks to a perturbative matching to $\overline{MS}$. By highlighting the limitations of the current computations, we advocate for a new strategy using lattice calculations in small volume.

Gluon helicity from global analysis of experimental data and lattice QCD Ioffe time distributions

We perform a new global analysis of spin-dependent parton distribution functions with the inclusion of Ioffe time pseudo-distributions computed in lattice QCD (LQCD), which are directly sensitive to the gluon helicity distribution, $Δg$. These lattice data have an analogous relationship to parton distributions as do experimental cross sections, and can be readily included in global analyses. We focus in particular on the constraining capability of current LQCD data on the sign of $Δg$ at intermediate parton momentum fractions $x$, which was recently brought into question by analysis of data in the absence of parton positivity constraints. We find that present LQCD data cannot discriminate between positive and negative $Δg$ solutions, although significant changes in the solutions for both the gluon and quark sectors are observed.

Complementarity of experimental and lattice QCD data on pion parton distributions

We extract pion parton distribution functions (PDFs) in a Monte Carlo global QCD analysis of experimental data together with reduced Ioffe time pseudo-distributions and matrix elements of current-current correlators generated from lattice QCD. By including both experimental and lattice QCD data, our analysis rigorously quantifies both the uncertainties of the pion PDFs and systematic effects intrinsic to the lattice QCD observables. The reduced Ioffe time pseudo-distributions significantly decrease the uncertainties on the PDFs, while the current-current correlators are limited by the systematic effects associated with the lattice. Consistent with recent phenomenological determinations, the behavior of the valence quark distribution of the pion at large momentum fraction is found to be $\sim (1-x)^{ β_{\rm eff}}$ with $β_{\rm eff} \approx 1.0-1.2$.

$\langle x\rangle$ and $\langle x^2\rangle$ of the pion PDF from Lattice QCD with $N_f=2+1+1$ dynamical quark flavours

Using Nf=2+1+1 lattice QCD, we determine the fermionic connected contributions to the second and third moment of the pion PDF. Based on gauge configurations from the European Twisted Mass Collaboration, chiral and continuum extrapolations are performed using pion masses in the range of 230 to 500 MeV and three values of the lattice spacing. Finite volume effects are investigated using different volumes. In order to avoid mixing under renormalisation for the third moment, we use an operator with two non-zero spatial components of momentum. Momenta are injected using twisted boundary conditions. Our final values read $\langle x\rangle=0.2075(106)$ and $\langle x^2\rangle=0.163(33)$, determined at 2 GeV in the $\overline{MS}$-scheme and with systematic and statistical uncertainties summend in quadrature.

Gluon propagator and three-gluon vertex with dynamical quarks

We present a detailed analysis of the kinetic and mass terms associated with the Landau gauge gluon propagator in the presence of dynamical quarks, and a comprehensive dynamical study of certain special kinematic limits of the three-gluon vertex. Our approach capitalizes on results from recent lattice simulations with (2+1) domain wall fermions, a novel nonlinear treatment of the gluon mass equation, and the nonperturbative reconstruction of the longitudinal three-gluon vertex from its fundamental Slavnov-Taylor identities. Particular emphasis is placed on the persistence of the suppression displayed by certain combinations of the vertex form factors at intermediate and low momenta, already known from numerous pure Yang-Mills studies. One of our central findings is that the inclusion of dynamical quarks moderates the intensity of this phenomenon only mildly, leaving the asymptotic low-momentum behavior unaltered, but displaces the characteristic "zero crossing" deeper into the infrared region. In addition, the effect of the three-gluon vertex is explored at the level of the renormalization-group invariant combination corresponding to the effective gauge coupling, whose size is considerably reduced with respect to its counterpart obtained from the ghost-gluon vertex. The main upshot of the above considerations is the further confirmation of the tightly interwoven dynamics between the two- and three-point sectors of QCD.

The strong running coupling from the gauge sector of Domain Wall lattice QCD with physical quark masses

We report on the first computation of the strong running coupling at the physical point (physical pion mass) from the ghost-gluon vertex, computed from lattice simulations with three flavors of Domain Wall fermions. We find $α_{\overline{\rm MS}}(m_Z^2)=0.1172(11)$, in remarkably good agreement with the world-wide average. Our computational bridge to this value is the Taylor-scheme strong coupling, which has been revealed of great interest by itself because it can be directly related to the quark-gluon interaction kernel in continuum approaches to the QCD bound-state problem.

Discretization effects on renormalized gauge-field Green's functions, scale setting and gluon mass

The $SU(3)$ gauge-field propagators computed from the lattice have been exhaustively used in the investigation of the low-momentum dynamics of QCD, in a judicious interplay with results from other nonperturbative approaches, and for the extraction of fundamental parameters of QCD like $Λ_{\overline{\rm MS}}$ as well. The impact of the discretization artifacts and their role in the extrapolation of the results to the continuum limit have not been fully understood so far. We report here about a very careful analysis of the physical scaling violation of the Landau-gauge propagators renormalized in MOM scheme and the Taylor coupling, steering us towards an insightful understanding of the effects from discretization artifacts which makes therefore possible a reliable continuum-limit extrapolation.

On the zero-crossing of the three-gluon Green's function from lattice simulations

We report on some efforts recently made in order to gain a better understanding of some IR properties of the 3-point gluon Green's function by exploiting results from large-volume quenched lattice simulations. These lattice results have been obtained by using both tree-level Symanzik and the standard Wilson action, in the aim of assessing the possible impact of effects presumably resulting from a particular choice for the discretization of the action. The main resulting feature is the existence of a negative logaritmic divergence at zero-momentum, which pulls the 3-gluon form factors down at low momenta and, consequently, yields a zero-crossing at a given deep IR momentum. The results can be correctly explained by analyzing the relevant Dyson-Schwinger equations and appropriate truncation schemes.

Instanton liquid properties from lattice QCD

We examined the instanton contribution to the QCD configurations generated from lattice QCD for $N_F=0$, $N_F=2+1$ and $N_F=2+1+1$ dynamical quark flavors from two different and complementary approaches. First via the use of Gradient flow, we computed instanton liquid properties using an algorithm to localize instantons in the gauge field configurations and studied their evolution with flow time. Then, the analysis of the running at low momenta of gluon Green's functions serves as an independent confirmation of the instanton density which can also be derived without the use of the Gradient flow.

Complex Langevin Simulation of a Random Matrix Model at Nonzero Chemical Potential

In this paper we test the complex Langevin algorithm for numerical simulations of a random matrix model of QCD with a first order phase transition to a phase of finite baryon density. We observe that a naive implementation of the algorithm leads to phase quenched results, which were also derived analytically in this article. We test several fixes for the convergence issues of the algorithm, in particular the method of gauge cooling, the shifted representation, the deformation technique and reweighted complex Langevin, but only the latter method reproduces the correct analytical results in the region where the quark mass is inside the domain of the eigenvalues. In order to shed more light on the issues of the methods we also apply them to a similar random matrix model with a milder sign problem and no phase transition, and in that case gauge cooling cooling solves the convergence problems as was shown before in the literature.

Direct detection of metal-insulator phase transitions using the modified Backus-Gilbert method

The detection of the (semi)metal-insulator phase transition can be extremely difficult if the local order parameter which characterizes the ordered phase is unknown. In some cases, it is even impossible to define a local order parameter: the most prominent example of such system is the spin liquid state. This state was proposed to exist in theHubbard model on the hexagonal lattice in a region between the semimetal phase and the antiferromagnetic insulator phase. The existence of this phase has been the subject of a long debate. In order to detect these exotic phases we must use alternative methods to those used for more familiar examples of spontaneous symmetry breaking. We have modified the Backus-Gilbert method of analytic continuation which was previously used in the calculation of the pion quasiparticle mass in lattice QCD. The modification of the method consists of the introduction of the Tikhonov regularization scheme which was used to treat the ill-conditioned kernel. This modified Backus-Gilbert method is applied to the Euclidean propagators in momentum space calculated using the hybridMonte Carlo algorithm. In this way, it is possible to reconstruct the full dispersion relation and to estimate the mass gap, which is a direct signal of the transition to the insulating state. We demonstrate the utility of this method in our calculations for the Hubbard model on the hexagonal lattice. We also apply the method to the metal-insulator phase transition in the Hubbard-Coulomb model on the square lattice.

Refining the detection of the zero crossing for the symmetric and asymmetric three-gluon vertices

This article reports on the detailed study of the three-gluon vertex in four-dimensional $SU(3)$ Yang-Mills theory employing lattice simulations with large physical volumes and high statistics. A meticulous scrutiny of the so-called symmetric and asymmetric kinematical configurations is performed and it is shown that the associated form-factor changes sign at a given range of momenta. The lattice results are compared to the model independent predictions of Schwinger-Dyson equations and a very good agreement among the two is found.

Comment on "Lattice Gluon and Ghost Propagators, and the Strong Coupling in Pure $SU(3)$ Yang-Mills Theory: Finite Lattice Spacing and Volume Effects"

The authors of ref. Phys.Rev. D94 (2016) no.1, 014502 reported about a careful analysis of the impact of lattice artifacts on the $SU(3)$ gauge-field propagators. In particular, they found that the low-momentum behavior of the renormalized propagators depends on the lattice bare coupling and interpreted this fact as the result of it being affected by finite lattice spacing artifacts. We do not share this interpretation and present here a different and more suitable explanation for these results.

Gluon Green functions free of Quantum fluctuations

This letter reports on how the Wilson flow technique can efficaciously kill the short-distance quantum fluctuations of 2- and 3-gluon Green functions, removes the $Λ_{\rm QCD}$ scale and destroys the transition from the confining non-perturbative to the asymptotically-free perturbative sector. After the Wilson flow, the behavior of the Green functions with momenta can be described in terms of the quasi-classical instanton background. The same behavior also occurs, before the Wilson flow, at low-momenta. This last result permits applications as, for instance, the detection of instanton phenomenological properties or a cheap lattice calibration.

On the zero crossing of the three-gluon vertex

We report on new results on the infrared behaviour of the three-gluon vertex in quenched Quantum Chormodynamics, obtained from large-volume lattice simulations. The main focus of our study is the appearance of the characteristic infrared feature known as 'zero crossing', the origin of which is intimately connected with the nonperturbative masslessness of the Faddeev-Popov ghost. The appearance of this effect is clearly visible in one of the two kinematic configurations analyzed, and its theoretical origin is discussed in the framework of Schwinger-Dyson equations. The effective coupling in the momentum subtraction scheme that corresponds to the three-gluon vertex is constructed, revealing the vanishing of the effective interaction at the exact location of the zero crossing.

Phase Diagram of Wilson and Twisted Mass Fermions at finite isospin chemical potential

Wilson Fermions with untwisted and twisted mass are widely used in lattice simulations. Therefore one important question is whether the twist angle and the lattice spacing affect the phase diagram. We briefly report on the study of the phase diagram of QCD in the parameter space of the degenerate quark masses, isospin chemical potential, lattice spacing, and twist angle by employing chiral perturbation theory. Moreover we calculate the pion masses and their dependence on these four parameters.
