Coherent control at its most fundamental: CEP-dependent electron localization in photodissoziation of a H2+ molecular ion beam target

Measurements and calculations of the absolute carrier-envelope phase (CEP) effects in the photodissociation of the simplest molecule, H2+, with a 4.5-fs Ti:Sapphire laser pulse at intensities up to (4 +- 2)x10^14 Watt/cm^2 are presented. Localization of the electron with respect to the two nuclei (during the dissociation process) is controlled via the CEP of the ultra-short laser pulses. In contrast to previous CEP-dependent experiments with neutral molecules, the dissociation of the molecular ions is not preceded by a photoionization process, which strongly influences the CEP dependence. Kinematically complete data is obtained by time- and position-resolved coincidence detection. The phase dependence is determined by a single-shot phase measurement correlated to the detection of the dissoziation fragments. The experimental results show quantitative agreement with ab inito 3D-TDSE calculations that include nuclear vibration and rotation.

Carrier-envelope phase control over pathway interference in strong-field dissociation of H$_2^+$

The dissociation of an H$_2^+$ molecular-ion beam by linearly polarized, carrier-envelope-phase-tagged 5 fs pulses at 4$\times10^{14} $W/cm$^2$ with a central wavelength of 730 nm was studied using a coincidence 3D momentum imaging technique. Carrier-envelope-phase-dependent asymmetries in the emission direction of H$^+$ fragments relative to the laser polarization were observed. These asymmetries are caused by interference of odd and even photon number pathways, where net-zero photon and 1-photon interference predominantly contributes at H$^+$+H kinetic energy releases of 0.2 -- 0.45 eV, and net-2-photon and 1-photon interference contributes at 1.65 -- 1.9 eV. These measurements of the benchmark H$_2^+$ molecule offer the distinct advantage that they can be quantitatively compared with \textit{ab initio} theory to confirm our understanding of strong-field coherent control via the carrier-envelope phase.

New determination of the 13C(a, n)16O reaction rate and its influence on the s-process nucleosynthesis in AGB stars

We present a new measurement of the $α$-spectroscopic factor ($S_α$) and the asymptotic normalization coefficient (ANC) for the 6.356 MeV 1/2$^+$ subthreshold state of $^{17}$O through the $^{13}$C($^{11}$B, $^{7}$Li)$^{17}$O transfer reaction and we determine the $α$-width of this state. This is believed to have a strong effect on the rate of the $^{13}$C($α$, $n$)$^{16}$O reaction, the main neutron source for {\it slow} neutron captures (the $s$-process) in asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. Based on the new width we derive the astrophysical S-factor and the stellar rate of the $^{13}$C($α$, $n$)$^{16}$O reaction. At a temperature of 100 MK our rate is roughly two times larger than that by \citet{cau88} and two times smaller than that recommended by the NACRE compilation. We use the new rate and different rates available in the literature as input in simulations of AGB stars to study their influence on the abundances of selected $s$-process elements and isotopic ratios. There are no changes in the final results using the different rates for the $^{13}$C($α$, $n$)$^{16}$O reaction when the $^{13}$C burns completely in radiative conditions. When the $^{13}$C burns in convective conditions, as in stars of initial mass lower than $\sim$2 $M_\sun$ and in post-AGB stars, some changes are to be expected, e.g., of up to 25% for Pb in our models. These variations will have to be carefully analyzed when more accurate stellar mixing models and more precise observational constraints are available.

Asymptotic normalization coefficient from the 12C(7Li,6He)13N reaction and the astrophysical 12C(p,g)13N reaction rate

Angular distribution of the 12C(7Li,6He)13N reaction at E(7Li) = 44.0 MeV was measured at the HI-13 tandem accelerator of Beijing, China. Asymptotic normalization coefficient (ANC) of 13N = 12C + p was derived to be 1.64 $\pm$ 0.11 fm$^{-1/2}$ through distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA) analysis. The ANC was then used to deduce the astrophysical $S(E)$ factors and reaction rates for direct capture in 12C(p,g)13N at energies of astrophysical relevance.

Study of the 12C+12C fusion reactions near the Gamow energy

The fusion reactions 12C(12C,a)20Ne and 12C(12C,p)23Na have been studied from E = 2.10 to 4.75 MeV by gamma-ray spectroscopy using a C target with ultra-low hydrogen contamination. The deduced astrophysical S(E)* factor exhibits new resonances at E <= 3.0 MeV, in particular a strong resonance at E = 2.14 MeV, which lies at the high-energy tail of the Gamow peak. The resonance increases the present non-resonant reaction rate of the alpha channel by a factor of 5 near T = 8x10^8 K. Due to the resonance structure, extrapolation to the Gamow energy E_G = 1.5 MeV is quite uncertain. An experimental approach based on an underground accelerator placed in a salt mine in combination with a high efficiency detection setup could provide data over the full E_G energy range.

The origin of the red luminescence in Mg-doped GaN

Optically-detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) and positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS) experiments have been employed to study magnesium-doped GaN layers grown by metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy. As the Mg doping level is changed, the combined experiments reveal a strong correlation between the vacancy concentrations and the intensity of the red photoluminescence band at 1.8 eV. The analysis provides strong evidence that the emission is due to recombination in which electrons both from effective mass donors and from deeper donors recombine with deep centers, the deep centers being vacancy-related defects.
