Design and Operation of a Windowless Gas Target Internal to a Solenoidal Magnet for Use with a Megawatt Electron Beam

A windowless hydrogen gas target of nominal thickness $10^{19}$ cm$^{-2}$ is an essential component of the DarkLight experiment, which is designed to utilize the megawatt electron beam at an Energy Recovery Linac (ERL). The design of such a target is challenging because the pressure drops by many orders of magnitude between the central, high-density section of the target and the surrounding beamline, resulting in laminar, transitional, and finally molecular flow regimes. The target system was assembled and operated at Jefferson Lab's Low Energy Recirculator Facility (LERF) in 2016, and subsequently underwent several revisions and calibration tests at MIT Bates in 2017. The system at dynamic equilibrium was simulated in COMSOL to provide a better understanding of its optimal operation at other working points. We have determined that a windowless gas target with sufficiently high density for DarkLight's experimental needs is feasible in an ERL environment.

Nuclear probes of an out-of-equilibrium plasma at the highest compression

We report the highest compression reached in laboratory plasmas using eight laser beams, E$_{laser}$$\approx$12 kJ, $τ_{laser}$=2 ns in third harmonic on a CD$_2$ target at the ShenGuang-II Upgrade (SGII-Up) facility in Shanghai, China. We estimate the deuterium density $ρ_D$= 2.0 $\pm$ 0.9 kg/cm$^{3}$, and the average kinetic energy of the plasma ions less than 1 keV. The highest reached areal density $Λρ_{D}$=4.8 $\pm$ 1.5 g/cm$^{2}$ was obtained from the measured ratio of the sequential ternary fusion reactions (dd$\rightarrow$t+p and t+d$\rightarrow$$α$+n) and the two body reaction fusions (dd$\rightarrow$$^3$He+n). At such high densities, sequential ternary and also quaternary nuclear reactions become important as well (i.e. n(14.1 MeV) + $^{12}$C $\rightarrow$ n'+$^{12}$C* etc.) resulting in a shift of the neutron (and proton) kinetic energies from their birth values. The Down Scatter Ratio (DSR-quaternary nuclear reactions) method, i.e. the ratio of the 10-12MeV neutrons divided by the total number of 14.1MeV neutrons produced, confirms the high densities reported above. The estimated lifetime of the highly compressed plasma is 52 $\pm$ 9 ps, much smaller than the lasers pulse duration.

Experimental realization of 105-qubit random access quantum memory

Random access memory is an indispensable device for classical information technology. Analog to this, for quantum information technology, it is desirable to have a random access quantum memory with many memory cells and programmable access to each cell. We report an experiment that realizes a random access quantum memory of 105 qubits carried by 210 memory cells in a macroscopic atomic ensemble. We demonstrate storage of optical qubits into these memory cells and their read-out at programmable times by arbitrary orders with fidelities exceeding any classical bound. Experimental realization of a random access quantum memory with many memory cells and programmable control of its write-in and read-out makes an important step for its application in quantum communication, networking, and computation.

Triple α Resonances in the Decay of Hot Nuclear Systems *

The Efimov (Thomas) trimers in excited 12 C nuclei, for which no observation exists yet, are discussed by means of analyzing the experimental data of 70(64) Zn( 64 Ni) + 70(64) Zn( 64 Ni) reactions at beam energy of E/A=35MeV/nucleon. In heavy ion collisions, the αs interact with each other and can form complex systems such as 8 Be and 12 C. For the 3α systems, multi resonance processes give rise to excited levels of 12 C. The interaction between any two of the 3α particles provides events with one, two or three 8 Be. Their interfering levels are clearly seen in the minimum relative energy distributions. Events of three couple α relative energies consistent with the ground state of 8 Be are observed with the decrease of the instrumental error at the reconstructed 7.458 MeV excitation energy of 12C, which was suggested as the Efimov (Thomas) state.

Frustrated Magnetism in Mott Insulating (V$_{1-x}$Cr$_x$)$_2$O$_3$

V2O3 famously features all four combinations of paramagnetic vs antiferromagnetic, and metallic vs insulating states of matter in response to %-level doping, pressure in the GPa range, and temperature below 300 K. Using time-of-flight neutron spectroscopy combined with density functional theory calculations of magnetic interactions, we have mapped and analyzed the inelastic magnetic neutron scattering cross section over a wide range of energy and momentum transfer in the chromium stabilized antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic insulating phases (AFI & PI). Our results reveal an important magnetic frustration and degeneracy of the PI phase which is relieved by the rhombohedral to monoclinic transition at $T_N=185$ K due to a significant magneto-elastic coupling. This leads to the recognition that magnetic frustration is an inherent property of the paramagnetic phase in $\rm (V_{1-x}Cr_x)_2O_3$ and plays a key role in suppressing the magnetic long range ordering temperature and exposing a large phase space for the paramagnetic Mott metal-insulator transition to occur.

Recognition of M-type stars in the unclassified spectra of LAMOST DR5 using a hash learning method

Our study aims to recognize M-type stars which are classified as "UNKNOWN" due to bad quality in Large sky Area Multi-Object fibre Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) DR5 V1. A binary nonlinear hashing algorithm based on Multi-Layer Pseudo Inverse Learning (ML-PIL) is proposed to effectively learn spectral features for the M-type star detection, which can overcome the bad fitting problem of template matching, particularly for low S/N spectra. The key steps and the performance of the search scheme are presented. A positive dataset is obtained by clustering the existing M-type spectra to train the ML-PIL networks. By employing this new method, we find 11,410 M-type spectra out of 642,178 "UNKNOWN" spectra, and provide a supplemental catalogue. Both the supplemental objects and released M-type stars in DR5 V1 are composed a whole M type sample, which will be released in the official DR5 to the public in June 2019, All the M-type stars in the dataset are classified to giants and dwarfs by two suggested separators: 1) color diagram of H versus J~K from 2MASS; 2) line indices CaOH versus CaH1, and the separation is validated with HRD derived from Gaia DR2. The magnetic activities and kinematics of M dwarfs are also provided with the EW of H_alpha emission line and the astrometric data from Gaia DR2 respectively.

Observation of Brillouin optomechanical strong coupling with an 11 GHz mechanical mode

Achieving cavity-optomechanical strong coupling with high-frequency phonons provides a rich avenue for quantum technology development including quantum state-transfer, memory, and transduction, as well as enabling several fundamental studies of macroscopic phononic degrees-of-freedom. Reaching such coupling with GHz mechanical modes however has proved challenging, with a prominent hindrance being material- and surface-induced-optical absorption in many materials. Here, we circumvent these challenges and report the observation of optomechanical strong coupling to a high frequency (11 GHz) mechanical mode of a fused-silica whispering-gallery microresonator via the electrostrictive Brillouin interaction. Using an optical heterodyne detection scheme, the anti-Stokes light backscattered from the resonator is measured and normal-mode splitting and an avoided crossing are observed in the recorded spectra, providing unambiguous signatures of strong coupling. The optomechanical coupling rate reaches values as high as $G/2π= 39 \ \text{MHz}$ through the use of an auxiliary pump resonance, where the coupling dominates both the optical ($κ/2π= 3 \ \text{MHz}$) and the mechanical ($γ_\text{m}/2π= 21 \ \text{MHz}$) amplitude decay rates. Our findings provide a promising new approach for optical quantum control using light and sound.

Evidence of Interfacial Topological Superconductivity on the Topological Semimetal Tungsten Carbide Induced by Metal Deposition

Interfaces between materials with different electronic ground states have become powerful platforms for creating and controlling novel quantum states of matter, in which inversion symmetry breaking and other effects at the interface may introduce additional electronic states. Among the emergent phenomena, superconductivity is of particular interest. In this work, by depositing metal films on a newly identified topological semimetal tungsten carbide (WC) single crystal, we have obtained interfacial topological superconductivity evidenced from soft point contact spectroscopy. This very robust phenomenon has been demonstrated for a wide range of Metal/WC interfaces, involving both non-magnetic and ferromagnetic films, and the superconducting transition temperatures is surprisingly insensitive to the magnetism of thin films, suggesting a spin-triplet pairing superconducting state. The results offer an opportunity to implement topological superconductivity using convenient thin film coating method.

Experimental entanglement of 25 individually accessible atomic quantum interfaces

Quantum interface links stationary qubits in quantum memory with flying photonic qubits in optical transmission channels and constitutes a critical element for future quantum internet. Entanglement of quantum interfaces is a key step for realization of quantum networks. Through heralded detection of photon interference, here we generate multipartite entanglement between 25 (or 9) individually addressable quantum interfaces in a multiplexed atomic quantum memory array and confirm genuine 22 (or 9) partite entanglement, respectively. Experimental entanglement of a record-high number of quantum interfaces makes an important enabling step towards realization of quantum networks, long-distance quantum communication, and multipartite quantum information processing.

High-angle Deflection of the Energetic Electrons by a Voluminous Magnetic Structure in Near-normal Intense Laser-plasma Interactions

The physics governing electron acceleration by a relativistically intense laser are not confined to the critical density surface, they also pervade the sub-critical plasma in front of the target. Here, particles can gain many times the ponderomotive energy from the overlying laser, and strong fields can grow. Experiments using a high contrast laser and a prescribed laser pre-pulse demonstrate that development of the pre-plasma has an unexpectedly strong effect on the most energetic, super-ponderomotive electrons. Presented 2D particle-in-cell simulations reveal how strong, voluminous magnetic structures that evolve in the pre-plasma impact high energy electrons more significantly than low energy ones for longer pulse durations and how the common practice of tilting the target to a modest incidence angle can be enough to initiate strong deflection. The implications are that multiple angular spectral measurements are necessary to prevent misleading conclusions from past and future experiments.

Strongly Resonating Bosons in Hot Nuclei

When two heavy ions near the Fermi energy collide, a warm and low-density region can form in which fragments appear. This region is mainly dominated by proton (p) and alpha particles. In such an environment, the alphas interact with each other, and especially through strong resonances, form complex systems such as 8Be and 12C. Our experiments show that in the reactions 70(64)Zn(64Ni)+70(64)Zn(64Ni) at E/A=35 MeV/nucleon levels of 8Be appear around relative energies Eij=0.092 MeV, 3.03 MeV as well as above 10 MeV and 100 MeV. For the 3 alpha systems, multi resonance processes give rise to excited levels of 12C. In particular, the Hoyle state at 7.654 MeV excitation energy shows a decay component through the ground state of 8Be and also shows components where two different alpha couples are at relative energies consistent with the ground state of 8Be at the same time. A component where the three alpha relative energies are consistent with the ground state of 8Be (i.e., E12=E13=E23=0.092 MeV) is also observed at the 7.458 MeV excitation energy, which was suggested as an Efimov state.

Collective flows of $α$-clustering $^{12}\mathrm{C}$ + $^{197}\mathrm{Au}$ by using different flow analysis methods

Recently the ratio of triangular flow to the elliptic flow ($v_3/v_2$) of hadrons was proposed as a probe to detect the pattern of $α$-clustering $^{12}\mathrm{C}$ in $^{12}\mathrm{C}$+$^{197}\mathrm{Au}$ collisions at relativistic energy by a participant plane method (Phys. Rev. C 95, 064904 (2017)). In experimental event plane method, Q-cumulant method and two-particle correlation method with rapidity gap always were used for measurement of collective flow only by means of momentum space. By comparing collective flow through the different methods, the ratio of $v_3/v_2$ could be taken as an experimental probe to distinguish different $α$-clustering structure of $^{12}\mathrm{C}$.

Insight-HXMT observations of the New Black Hole Candidate MAXI J1535-571: timing analysis

We present the X-ray timing results of the new black hole candidate (BHC) MAXI J1535-571 during its 2017 outburst from Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (\emph{Insight}-HXMT) observations taken from 2017 September 6 to 23. Following the definitions given by \citet{Belloni2010}, we find that the source exhibits state transitions from Low/Hard state (LHS) to Hard Intermediate state (HIMS) and eventually to Soft Intermediate state (SIMS). Quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) are found in the intermediate states, which suggest different types of QPOs. With the large effective area of \emph{Insight}-HXMT at high energies, we are able to present the energy dependence of the QPO amplitude and centroid frequency up to 100 keV which is rarely explored by previous satellites. We also find that the phase lag at the type-C QPOs centroid frequency is negative (soft lags) and strongly correlated with the centroid frequency. By assuming a geometrical origin of type-C QPOs, the source is consistent with being a high inclination system.

The Wide Field Monitor onboard the eXTP mission

The eXTP (enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry) mission is a major project of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and China National Space Administration (CNSA) currently performing an extended phase A study and proposed for a launch by 2025 in a low-earth orbit. The eXTP scientific payload envisages a suite of instruments (Spectroscopy Focusing Array, Polarimetry Focusing Array, Large Area Detector and Wide Field Monitor) offering unprecedented simultaneous wide-band X-ray timing and polarimetry sensitivity. A large European consortium is contributing to the eXTP study and it is expected to provide key hardware elements, including a Wide Field Monitor (WFM). The WFM instrument for eXTP is based on the design originally proposed for the LOFT mission within the ESA context. The eXTP/WFM envisages a wide field X-ray monitor system in the 2-50 keV energy range, achieved through the technology of the large-area Silicon Drift Detectors. The WFM will consist of 3 pairs of coded mask cameras with a total combined Field of View (FoV) of 90x180 degrees at zero response and a source localization accuracy of ~1 arcmin. In this paper we provide an overview of the WFM instrument design, including new elements with respect to the earlier LOFT configuration, and anticipated performance.

Tunable Emergent Heterostructures in a Prototypical Correlated Metal

At the interface between two distinct materials desirable properties, such as superconductivity, can be greatly enhanced, or entirely new functionalities may emerge. Similar to in artificially engineered heterostructures, clean functional interfaces alternatively exist in electronically textured bulk materials. Electronic textures emerge spontaneously due to competing atomic-scale interactions, the control of which, would enable a top-down approach for designing tunable intrinsic heterostructures. This is particularly attractive for correlated electron materials, where spontaneous heterostructures strongly affect the interplay between charge and spin degrees of freedom. Here we report high-resolution neutron spectroscopy on the prototypical strongly-correlated metal CeRhIn5, revealing competition between magnetic frustration and easy-axis anisotropy -- a well-established mechanism for generating spontaneous superstructures. Because the observed easy-axis anisotropy is field-induced and anomalously large, it can be controlled efficiently with small magnetic fields. The resulting field-controlled magnetic superstructure is closely tied to the formation of superconducting and electronic nematic textures in CeRhIn5, suggesting that in-situ tunable heterostructures can be realized in correlated electron materials.

Decay Modes of the Hoyle State in $^{12}C$

Recent experimental results give an upper limit less than 0.043\% (95\% C.L.) to the direct decay of the Hoyle state into 3$α$ respect to the sequential decay into $^8${Be}+$α$. We performed one and two-dimensional tunneling calculations to estimate such a ratio and found it to be more than one order of magnitude smaller than experiment depending on the range of the nuclear force. This is within high statistics experimental capabilities. Our results can also be tested by measuring the decay modes of high excitation energy states of $^{12}$C where the ratio of direct to sequential decay might reach 10\% at $E^*$($^{12}$C)=10.3 MeV. The link between a Bose Einstein Condensate (BEC) and the direct decay of the Hoyle state is also addressed. We discuss a hypothetical `Efimov state' at $E^*$($^{12}$C)=7.458 MeV, which would mainly {\it sequentially} decay with 3$α$ of {\it equal energies}: a counterintuitive result of tunneling. Such a state, if it would exist, is at least 8 orders of magnitude less probable than the Hoyle's, thus below the sensitivity of recent and past experiments.

Single and multiple pin(s)-to-liquid discharges: connecting self-organization patterns and ROS production in liquids for plasma agronomy application

Pin-to-liquid discharges are investigated for the activation of liquids dedicated to agriculture applications. They are characterized through their electrical and optical properties, with a particular attention paid to their filaments and self-organized patterns occurring at the liquid interface. We show how modulating their interaction with ambient air can promote the production of reactive species in liquids such as H2O2, NO2- and NO3-. The effects of the resulting plasma activated media are reported on lentils seeds.
