COMPTEL Observations of the Blazar PKS 1622-297 during a Gamma-Ray High State in 1995

PKS 1622-297 was detected as a source of gamma-rays by the EGRET experiment at energies above 100 MeV during a gamma-ray outburst June and July 1995. We analyzed the COMPTEL data (0.75 - 30 MeV) of this time period to investigate the behaviour of PKS 1622-297 at lower gamma-ray energies. The blazar is significantly (5.7 sigma) detected by COMPTEL at energies above 10 MeV. Below 10 MeV the source is only marginally (3-10 MeV band) or not (below 3 MeV) detected. The summed MeV spectrum shows a 'hard' (alpha < 2, ~ E^(-alpha)) shape and, if combined with the simultaneous EGRET spectrum, a spectral break at MeV energies is indicated. We present the COMPTEL results (light curves, spectra) and compare them to results derived in neighbouring energy bands, in particular to the EGRET one.

A proper ballistic calculation of tunneling conductance for real junctions

Employing an ab initio Screened Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (SKKR) band structure method for a metal-vacuum-metal junction, we find that the tunnel conductance is different when it is calculated across the barrier and far from it. We attribute this difference to an artefact of the ballistic approach which overestimates the role of specular reflections, and its inability to pick up contributions from localized interface states. To reconcile the ballistic approach with experiment, we propose that the tunnel conductance should be calculated as if it is measured directly across the barrier. In this case the predicted tunneling magnetoresistance is larger.

Issues and Observations on Applications of the Constrained-Path Monte Carlo Method to Many-Fermion Systems

We report several important observations that underscore the distinctions between the constrained-path Monte Carlo method and the continuum and lattice versions of the fixed-node method. The main distinctions stem from the differences in the state space in which the random walk occurs and in the manner in which the random walkers are constrained. One consequence is that in the constrained-path method the so-called mixed estimator for the energy is not an upper bound to the exact energy, as previously claimed. Several ways of producing an energy upper bound are given, and relevant methodological aspects are illustrated with simple examples.

COMPTEL Observation of the Flaring Quasar PKS0528+134

With a direct demodulation method, we have reanalyzed the data from COMPTEL/CGRO observation of PKS0528+134 during the 1993 March flare in gamma-rays. Our results show that during the flare gamma-rays were detected at a level approximately 2.4-3.8 times greater than the observed intensity in two earlier COMPTEL observations VP 0 and VP 1 in the energy range 3 MeV to 30 MeV. The 3-30 MeV time variability of the flux follows well the trend as observed by EGRET/CGRO at higher energies. No convincing excess can be found around the position of PKS0528+134 in the energy range 0.75 MeV to 3 MeV, which indicates a spectral break around 3 MeV. The detections and non-detections in the four standard COMPTEL energy bands are consistent with the earlier reports given by Collmar et al., while the feature that gamma-rays of the quasar still kept on flaring at energies down to 3 MeV is clearly found.

Negative Domain Wall Contribution to the Resistivity of Microfabricated Fe Wires

The effect of domain walls on electron transport has been investigated in microfabricated Fe wires (0.65 to 20 $μm$ linewidths) with controlled stripe domains. Magnetoresistance (MR) measurements as a function of domain wall density, temperature and the angle of the applied field are used to determine the low field MR contributions due to conventional sources in ferromagnetic materials and that due to the erasure of domain walls. A negative domain wall contribution to the resistivity is found. This result is discussed in light of a recent theoretical study of the effect of domain walls on quantum transport.

Magnetoresistance due to Domain Walls in Micron Scale Fe Wires with Stripe Domains

The magnetoresistance (MR) associated with domain boundaries has been investigated in microfabricated bcc Fe (0.65 to 20 $μ$m linewidth) wires with controlled stripe domains. Domain configurations have been characterized using magnetic force microscopy. MR measurements as a function of field angle, temperature and domain configuration are used to estimate MR contributions due to resistivity anisotropy and domain walls. Evidence is presented that domain boundaries enhance the conductivity in such microstructures over a broad range of temperatures (1.5 K to 80 K).
