Lifetime measurements of Triaxial Strongly Deformed bands in $^{163}$Tm

With the Doppler Shift Attenuation Method, quadrupole transition moments, $Q_t$, were determined for the two recently proposed Triaxial Strongly Deformed (TSD) bands in $^{163}$Tm. The measured $Q_t$ moments indicate that the deformation of these bands is larger than that of the yrast, signature partners. However, the measured values are smaller than those predicted by theory. This observation appears to be valid for TSD bands in several nuclei of the region

Evidence for particle-hole excitations in the triaxial strongly-deformed well of ^{163}Tm

Two interacting, strongly-deformed triaxial (TSD) bands have been identified in the Z = 69 nucleus ^{163}Tm. This is the first time that interacting TSD bands have been observed in an element other than the Z = 71 Lu nuclei, where wobbling bands have been previously identified. The observed TSD bands in ^{163}Tm appear to be associated with particle-hole excitations, rather than wobbling. Tilted-Axis Cranking (TAC) calculations reproduce all experimental observables of these bands reasonably well and also provide an explanation for the presence of wobbling bands in the Lu nuclei, and their absence in the Tm isotopes.

Cross-shell excitation in two-proton knockout: Structure of $^{52}$Ca

The two-proton knockout reaction $^9$Be($^{54}$Ti,$^{52}$Ca$ + γ$) has been studied at 72 MeV/nucleon. Besides the strong feeding of the $^{52}$Ca ground state, the only other sizeable cross section proceeds to a 3$^-$ level at 3.9 MeV. There is no measurable direct yield to the first excited 2$^+$ state at 2.6 MeV. The results illustrate the potential of such direct reactions for exploring cross-shell proton excitations in neutron-rich nuclei and confirms the doubly-magic nature of $^{52}$Ca.

Fusion-Fission of 16O+197Au at Sub-Barrier Energies

The recent discovery of heavy-ion fusion hindrance at far sub-barrier energies has focused much attention on both experimental and theoretical studies of this phenomenon. Most of the experimental evidence comes from medium-heavy systems such as Ni+Ni to Zr+Zr, for which the compound system decays primarily by charged-particle evaporation. In order to study heavier systems, it is, however, necessary to measure also the fraction of the decay that goes into fission fragments. In the present work we have, therefore, measured the fission cross section of 16O+197Au down to unprecedented far sub-barrier energies using a large position sensitive PPAC placed at backward angles. The preliminary cross sections will be discussed and compared to earlier studies at near-barrier energies. No conclusive evidence for sub-barrier hindrance was found, probably because the measurements were not extended to sufficiently low energies.

Decay modes of 250No

The Fragment Mass Analyzer at the ATLAS facility has been used to unambiguously identify the mass number associated with different decay modes of the nobelium isotopes produced via 204Pb(48Ca,xn)(252-x)No reactions. Isotopically pure (>99.7%) 204Pb targets were used to reduce background from more favored reactions on heavier lead isotopes. Two spontaneous fission half-lives (t_1/2 = 3.7+1.1-0.8 us and 43+22-15 us) were deduced from a total of 158 fission events. Both decays originate from 250No rather than from neighboring isotopes as previously suggested. The longer activity most likely corresponds to a K-isomer in this nucleus. No conclusive evidence for an alpha branch was observed, resulting in upper limits of 2.1% for the shorter lifetime and 3.4% for the longer activity.

Spectroscopy of the odd-odd fp-shell nucleus 52Sc from secondary fragmentation

The odd-odd fp-shell nucleus 52Sc was investigated using in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy following secondary fragmentation of a 55V and 57Cr cocktail beam. Aside from the known gamma-ray transition at 674(5)keV, a new decay at E_gamma=212(3) keV was observed. It is attributed to the depopulation of a low-lying excited level. This new state is discussed in the framework of shell-model calculations with the GXPF1, GXPF1A, and KB3G effective interactions. These calculations are found to be fairly robust for the low-lying level scheme of 52Sc irrespective of the choice of the effective interaction. In addition, the frequency of spin values predicted by the shell model is successfully modeled by a spin distribution formulated in a statistical approach with an empirical, energy-independent spin-cutoff parameter.

Report of the 2005 Snowmass Top/QCD Working Group

This report discusses several topics in both top quark physics and QCD at an International Linear Collider (ILC). Issues such as measurements at the $t\bar{t}$ threshold, including both theoretical and machine requirements, and the determination of electroweak top quark couplings, are reviewed. New results concerning the potential of a 500 GeV $e^+e^-$ collider for measuring $Wtb$ couplings and the top quark Yukawa coupling are presented. The status of higher order QCD corrections to jet production cross sections, heavy quark form factors, and longitudinal gauge boson scattering, needed for percent-level studies at the ILC, are reviewed. A new study of the measurement of the hadronic structure of the photon at a $γγ$ collider is presented. The effects on top quark properties from several models of new physics, including composite models, Little Higgs theories, and CPT violation, are studied.

"Bi-modal'' Isoscalar Giant Dipole Strength in $^{58}$Ni

The strength distribution of the isoscalar giant dipole resonance (ISGDR) in $^{58}$Ni has been obtained over the energy range 10.5--49.5 MeV via extreme forward angle scattering (including 0$^{\circ}$) of 386 MeV $α$ particles. We observe a ``bi-modal'' ${E1}$ strength distribution for the first time in an A $<$ 90 nucleus. The observed ISGDR strength distribution is in good agreement with the predictions of a recent QRPA calculation.

Entanglement Teleportation Through 1D Heisenberg Chain

Information transmission of two qubits through two independent 1D Heisenberg chains as a quantum channel is analyzed. It is found that the entanglement of two spin-$\frac 12$ quantum systems is decreased during teleportation via the thermal mixed state in 1D Heisenberg chain. The entanglement teleportation will be realized if the minimal entanglement of the thermal mixed state is provided in such quantum channel. High average fidelity of teleportation with values larger than 2/3 is obtained when the temperature {\it T} is very low. The mutual information $\mathcal{I}$ of the quantum channel declines with the increase of the temperature and the external magnetic field. The entanglement quality of input signal states cannot enhance mutual information of the quantum channel.

Thermal Entanglement between Alternate Qubits of a Four-qubit Heisenberg XX Chain in a Magnetic Field

The concurrence of two alternate qubits in a four-qubit Heisenberg XX chain is investigated when a uniform magnetic field B is included. It is found that there is no thermal entanglement between alternate qubits if B is close to zero. Magnetic field can induce entanglement in a certain range both for the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic cases. Near zero temperature, the entanglement undergoes two sudden changes with increasing value of the magnetic field B. This is due to the changes in the ground state. This novel property may be used as quantum entanglement switch. The anisotropy in the system can also induce the entanglement between two alternate qubits.

Hindrance of Heavy-ion Fusion at Extreme Sub-Barrier Energies in Open-shell Colliding Systems

The excitation function for the fusion-evaporation reaction 64Ni+100Mo has been measured down to a cross-section of ~5 nb. Extensive coupled-channels calculations have been performed, which cannot reproduce the steep fall-off of the excitation function at extreme sub-barrier energies. Thus, this system exhibits a hindrance for fusion, a phenomenon that has been discovered only recently. In the S-factor representation introduced to quantify the hindrance, a maximum is observed at E_s=120.6 MeV, which corresponds to 90% of the reference energy E_s^ref, a value expected from systematics of closed-shell systems. A systematic analysis of Ni-induced fusion reactions leading to compound nuclei with mass A=100-200 is presented in order to explore a possible dependence of the fusion hindrance on nuclear structure.

A Composite Chiral Pair of Rotational Bands in the odd-A Nucleus 135Nd

High-spin states in 135Nd were populated with the 110Pd(30Si,5n)135Nd reaction at a 30Si bombarding energy of 133 MeV. Two Delta(I)=1 bands with close excitation energies and the same parity were observed. These bands are directly linked by Delta(I)=1 and Delta(I)=2 transitions. The chiral nature of these two bands is confirmed by comparison with three-dimensional tilted axis cranking calculations. This is the first observation of a three-quasiparticle chiral structure and established the primarily geometric nature of this phenomenon.

The Isoscalar Giant Dipole Resonance in 208Pb and the Nuclear incompressibility

The isoscalar giant dipole resonance (ISGDR) has been investigated in 208Pb using inelastic scattering of 400 MeV alpha particles at forward angles, including 0deg. Using the superior capabilities of the Grand Raiden spectrometer, it has been possible to obtain spectra devoid of any "instrumental" background. The ISGDR strength distribution has been extracted from a multipole-composition of the observed spectra. The implication of these results on the experimental value of nuclear incompressibility are discussed.

Factorisation structures of algebras and coalgebras

We consider the factorisation problem for bialgebras: when a bialgebra $K$ factorises as $K=HL$, where $H$ and $L$ are algebras and coalgebras (but not necessarly bialgebras). Given two maps $R: H\ot L\to L\ot H$ and $W:L\ot H\to H\ot L$, we introduce a product $L_W\bowtie_R H$ and give necessary and sufficient conditions for $L_W\bowtie_R H$ to be a bialgebra. It turns out that $K$ factorises as $K=HL$ if and only if $K\cong L_W\bowtie_R H$ for some maps $R$ and $W$. As examples of this product we recover constructions introduced by Majid and Radford. Also, some of the pointed Hopf algebras that were recently constructed bu Beattie, D\u asc\u alescu and Grünenfelder appear as special cases.

Separable functors for Doi-Hopf modules. Applications

There are theorems in the literature which are referred as Maschke type theorems, because of the attempt to generalize Maschke's classical theorem. Our remark is that all these theorems are in fact providing sufficient conditions for the separability of a certain forgetful functor. But, unlike classical Maschke's theorem, where the sufficient condition is also necessary, none of these theorems gives any necessary condition for the separability of the forgeful functor in question. Our job is to find a necessary and sufficient condition for the separability of the forgetful functor from the category of Doi-Hopf modules forgetting the comodule structure. As in the classical case, this functor is separable iff exists a certain "integral map" with a normalizing property. As particular cases, improved versions of "Maschke type" theorems are given. Other various applications are given. For example, keeping in mind that the category of Yetter-Drinfel'd modules is also a category of Doi-Hopf modules, we obtain the notion of quantum integral. For H a finite dimensional Hopf algebra, the existence of such a quantum integral is a necessary and sufficient condition for the Drinfel'd double to be a separable extension of H.
