On the extreme value statistics of normal random matrices and 2D Coulomb gases: Universality and finite N corrections

In this paper we extend the orthogonal polynomials approach for extreme value calculations of Hermitian random matrices, developed by Nadal and Majumdar [1102.0738], to normal random matrices and 2D Coulomb gases in general. Firstly, we show that this approach provides an alternative derivation of results in the literature. More precisely, we show convergence of the rescaled eigenvalue with largest modulus of a normal Gaussian ensemble to a Gumbel distribution, as well as universality for an arbitrary radially symmetric potential. Secondly, it is shown that this approach can be generalised to obtain convergence of the eigenvalue with smallest modulus and its universality for ring distributions. Most interestingly, the here presented techniques are used to compute all slowly varying finite N correction of the above distributions, which is important for practical applications, given the slow convergence. Another interesting aspect of this work is the fact that we can use standard techniques from Hermitian random matrices to obtain the extreme value statistics of non-Hermitian random matrices resembling the large N expansion used in context of the double scaling limit of Hermitian matrix models in string theory.

Dominance of most tolerant species in multi-type lattice Widom-Rowlinson models

We analyse equilibrium phases in a multi-type lattice Widom-Rowlinson model with (i) four particle types, (ii) varying exclusion diameters between different particle types and (iii) large values of fugacity. Contrary to an expectation, it is not the most "aggressive" species, with largest diameters, which dominates the equilibrium measure, but the "most tolerant" one, which has smallest exclusion diameters. Results of numerical simulations are presented, showing densities of species in equilibrium phases and confirming the theoretical picture.

Quantum weighted entropy and its properties

We introduce quantum weighted entropy in analogy to an earlier notion of (classical) weighted entropy and derive many of its properties. These include the subadditivity, concavity and strong subadditivity property of quantum weighted entropy, as well as an analog of the Araki-Lieb inequality. Interesting byproducts of the proofs are a weighted analog of Klein's inequality and non-negativity of quantum weighted relative entropy. A main difficulty is the fact that the weights in general do not commute with the density matrices.

Bounds on the critical line via transfer matrix methods for an Ising model coupled to causal dynamical triangulations

We introduce a transfer matrix formalism for the (annealed) Ising model coupled to two-dimensional causal dynamical triangulations. Using the Krein-Rutman theory of positivity preserving operators we study several properties of the emerging transfer matrix. In particular, we determine regions in the quadrant of parameters beta, mu >0 where the infinite-volume free energy converges, yielding results on the convergence and asymptotic properties of the partition function and the Gibbs measure.

Growth of uniform infinite causal triangulations

We introduce a growth process which samples sections of uniform infinite causal triangulations by elementary moves in which a single triangle is added. A relation to a random walk on the integer half line is shown. This relation is used to estimate the geodesic distance of a given triangle to the rooted boundary in terms of the time of the growth process and to determine from this the fractal dimension. Furthermore, convergence of the boundary process to a diffusion process is shown leading to an interesting duality relation between the growth process and a corresponding branching process.

A local induced action for the noncritical string

We present an alternative to Polyakov's induced action for the noncritical string. Our Yang-Mills like action is both local and invariant under coordinate transformations. It defines a teleparallel theory of gravity with interesting links to Horava-Lifshitz and Einstein-aether theories. It is of Liouville type in the conformal gauge while, remarkably, in the proper-time gauge it gives an effective action familiar from the Causal Dynamical Triangulation (CDT) approach to 2d quantum gravity. In the latter gauge the effective action is especially interesting since its quantization is known to reduce to a quantum mechanical model.

A note on weak convergence results for uniform infinite causal triangulations

We discuss uniform infinite causal triangulations and equivalence to the size biased branching process measure - the critical Galton-Watson branching process distribution conditioned on non-extinction. Using known results from the theory of branching processes, this relation is used to prove weak convergence of the joint length-area process of a uniform infinite causal triangulations to a limiting diffusion. The diffusion equation enables us to determine the physical Hamiltonian and Green's function from the Feynman-Kac procedure, providing us with a mathematical rigorous proof of certain scaling limits of causal dynamical triangulations.

A tight Tsirelson inequality for infinitely many outcomes

We present a novel tight bound on the quantum violations of the CGLMP inequality in the case of infinitely many outcomes. Like in the case of Tsirelson's inequality the proof of our new inequality does not require any assumptions on the dimension of the Hilbert space or kinds of operators involved. However, it is seen that the maximal violation is obtained by the conjectured best measurements and a pure, but not maximally entangled, state. We give an approximate state which, in the limit where the number of outcomes tends to infinity, goes to the optimal state for this setting. This state might be potentially relevant for experimental verifications of Bell inequalities through multi-dimenisonal entangled photon pairs.

Causal random geometry from stochastic quantization

In this short note we review a recently found formulation of two-dimensional causal quantum gravity defined through Causal Dynamical Triangulations and stochastic quantization. This procedure enables one to extract the nonperturbative quantum Hamiltonian of the random surface model including the sum over topologies. Interestingly, the generally fictitious stochastic time corresponds to proper time on the geometries.

New aspects of two-dimensional quantum gravity

Causal dynamical triangulations (CDT) can be used as a regularization of quantum gravity. In two dimensions the theory can be solved anlytically, even before the cut-off is removed and one can study in detail how to take the continuum limit. We show how the CDT theory is related to Euclidean 2d quantum gravity (Liouville quantum gravity), how it can be generalized and how this generalized CDT model has a string field theory representation as well as a matrix model representationof a new kind, and finally how it examplifies the possibility that time in quantum gravity might be the stochastic time related to the branching of space into baby universes.

Proper time is stochastic time in 2d quantum gravity

We show that proper time, when defined in the quantum theory of 2d gravity, becomes identical to the stochastic time associated with the stochastic quantization of space. This observation was first made by Kawai and collaborators in the context of 2d Euclidean quantum gravity, but the relation is even simpler and more transparent in he context of 2d gravity formulated in the framework of CDT (causal dynamical triangulations).

Stochastic quantization and the role of time in quantum gravity

We show that the noncritical string field theory developed from two-dimensional quantum gravity in the framework of causal dynamical triangulations can be viewed as arising through a stochastic quantization. This requires that the proper time appearing in the string field theory be identified with the stochastic time of the stochastic formulation. The framework of stochastic quantization gives rise to a natural nonperturbative quantum Hamiltonian, which incorporates a sum over all spacetime topologies. We point out that the external character of stochastic time is a feature that pertains more generally to the proper time or distance appearing in nonperturbative correlation functions in quantum gravity.

Summing over all Topologies in CDT String Field Theory

By explicitly allowing for topology to change as a function of time, two-dimensional quantum gravity defined through causal dynamical triangulations gives rise to a new continuum string field theory. Within a matrix-model formulation we show that -- rather remarkably -- the associated sum over all genera can be performed in closed form, leading to a nonperturbative definition of CDT string field theory. We also obtain explicit formulas for the n-loop correlation functions. Our construction exhibits interesting parallels with previous, purely Euclidean treatments.

A Causal Alternative for c=0 Strings

We review a recently discovered continuum limit for the one-matrix model which describes "causal" two-dimensional quantum gravity. The behaviour of the quantum geometry in this limit is different from the quantum geometry of Euclidean two-dimensional quantum gravity defined by taking the "standard" continuum limit of the one-matrix model. Geodesic distance and time scale with canonical dimensions in this new limit, contrary to the situation in Euclidean two-dimensional quantum gravity. Remarkably, whenever we compare, the known results of (generalized) causal dynamical triangulations are reproduced exactly by the one-matrix model. We complement previous results by giving a geometrical interpretation of the new model in terms of a generalization of the loop equation of Euclidean dynamical triangulations. In addition, we discuss the time evolution of the quantum geometry.

A new continuum limit of matrix models

We define a new scaling limit of matrix models which can be related to the method of causal dynamical triangulations (CDT) used when investigating two-dimensional quantum gravity. Surprisingly, the new scaling limit of the matrix models is also a matrix model, thus explaining why the recently developed CDT continuum string field theory (arXiv:0802.0719) has a matrix-model representation (arXiv:0804.0252).

A Matrix Model for 2D Quantum Gravity defined by Causal Dynamical Triangulations

A novel continuum theory of two-dimensional quantum gravity, based on a version of Causal Dynamical Triangulations which incorporates topology change, has recently been formulated as a genuine string field theory in zero-dimensional target space (arXiv:0802.0719). Here we show that the Dyson-Schwinger equations of this string field theory are reproduced by a cubic matrix model. This matrix model also appears in the so-called Dijkgraaf-Vafa correspondence if the superpotential there is required to be renormalizable. In the spirit of this model, as well as the original large-N expansion by 't Hooft, we need no special double-scaling limit involving a fine tuning of coupling constants to obtain the continuum quantum-gravitational theory. Our result also implies a matrix model representation of the original, strictly causal quantum gravity model.

Maximal violation of the CGLMP inequality for infinite dimensional states

We present a much simplified version of the CGLMP inequality for the 2 x 2 x d Bell scenario. Numerical maximization of the violation of this inequality over all states and measurements suggests that the optimal state is far from maximally entangled, while the best measurements are the same as conjectured best measurements for the maximally entangled state. For very large values of d the inequality seems to reach its minimal value given by the probability constraints. This gives numerical evidence for a tight quantum Bell inequality (or generalized Csirelson inequality) for the 2 x 2 x inf scenario.

Topology change in causal quantum gravity

The role of topology change in a fundamental theory of quantum gravity is still a matter of debate. However, when regarding string theory as two-dimensional quantum gravity, topological fluctuations are essential. Here we present a third quantization of two-dimensional surfaces based on the method of causal dynamical triangulation (CDT). Formally, our construction is similar to the c = 0 non-critical string field theory developed by Ishibashi, Kawai and others, but physically it is quite distinct. Unlike in non-critical string theory the topology change of spatial slices is well controlled and regulated by Newton's constant.
