Impact of improved energy resolution on DUNE sensitivity in presence of a light sterile neutrino

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) primarily aims to measure the yet unknown parameters of the standard three neutrino framework, i.e., the determination of Dirac CP phase ($\delta_{13}$), neutrino mass hierarchy (MH) and octant of $\theta_{23}$. In the present work, we consider the standard three neutrino paradigm (referred to as the $(3+0)$ case) and beyond with an additional light sterile neutrino (referred to as the $(3+1)$ case). We consider two configurations : standard energy resolution as in DUNE Technical Design Report (TDR) and improved energy resolution and study the impact of energy resolution in the $(3+0)$ and $(3+1)$ cases. In general, inclusion of subdominant new physics effects spoils the sensitivities. However, improved energy resolution leads to enhancement in sensitivities to the three unknowns in both $(3+0)$ and $(3+1)$ cases.

Majorana CP Violation Insights from Decaying Neutrinos

It is well-known that within the standard three flavor neutrino oscillation formalism, the Majorana phases appearing in the neutrino mixing matrix cannot have any effect on neutrino oscillation probabilities thereby evading testability at neutrino oscillation experiments. We consider an effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian describing three flavor neutrino oscillations with the possibility of neutrino decay and demonstrate that the two Majorana phases can entangle with the off-diagonal decay terms and appear at the level of oscillation probabilities. Using the Cayley-Hamilton theorem, we derive approximate analytical expressions for three flavor neutrino oscillation probabilities in the presence of neutrino decay, taking into account matter effects. In the context of a long baseline neutrino experiment, we then analyse the impact of Majorana phases on the oscillation probabilities for different channels as well as on observables related to CP violation effects in neutrino oscillations. Finally, we discuss the effect of Majorana phases on the parameter degeneracies in the neutrino oscillation framework.

Sterile sector impacting the correlations and degeneracies among mixing parameters at the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment

We investigate the physics potential of the upcoming Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) in probing active-sterile mixing. We present analytic expressions for relevant oscillation probabilities for three active and one sterile neutrino of eV-scale mass and highlight essential parameters impacting the oscillation signals at DUNE. We then explore the space of sterile parameters as well as study their correlations among themselves and with parameters appearing in the standard framework ($\delta_{13}$ and $\theta_{23}$). We perform a combined fit for the near and far detector at DUNE using GLoBES. We consider alternative beam tune (low energy and medium energy) and runtime combinations for constraining the sterile parameter space. We show that charged current and neutral current interactions over the near and far detector at DUNE allow for an improved sensitivity for a wide range of sterile neutrino mass splittings.

Signals of eV-scale sterile neutrino at long baseline neutrino experiments

While most of the results of the neutrino oscillation experiments can be accommodated within the standard paradigm of three active flavor, there are tantalizing hints of an light eV-scale sterile neutrino from anomalous results of a few short baseline experiments. This additional light sterile neutrino is expected to leave an imprint on the physics observables pertaining to standard unknowns such as determination of the Dirac-type leptonic $CP$ phase, $\delta_{13}$, the question of neutrino mass hierarchy and the octant of $\theta_{23}$. The upcoming long baseline neutrino experiments such as T2HK, DUNE and P2O will be sensitive to active - sterile mixing. In the present work, we examine and assess the capability of these long baseline experiments to probe the sterile neutrino at the level of probabilities and event rates. We perform a detailed study by taking into account the values of parameters that are presently allowed and (a) study the impact on $CP$ violation by examining the role played by various appearance and disappearance channels, (b) address the question of disentangling the intrinsic effects from extrinsic effects in the standard paradigm as well as three active plus one light sterile neutrino, and finally (c) assess the ability of these long baseline experiments to distinguish between the two scenarios. Our results indicate that for the true values of sterile parameters and for all values of $\delta_{13}$, the sensitivity of P2O is the lowest while the sensitivity of T2HK is modest ($<3\,\sigma$) and the sensitivity of DUNE is $> 3\,\sigma$. For larger values of the sterile mixing angles, there is an improvement in the sensitivity for all the three considered experiments.
