LHC constraints on light neutralino dark matter in the MSSM

Light neutralino dark matter can be achieved in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model if staus are rather light, with mass around 100 GeV. We perform a detailed analysis of the relevant supersymmetric parameter space, including also the possibility of light selectons and smuons, and of light higgsino- or wino-like charginos. In addition to the latest limits from direct and indirect detection of dark matter, ATLAS and CMS constraints on electroweak-inos and on sleptons are taken into account using a "simplified models" framework. Measurements of the properties of the Higgs boson at 125 GeV, which constrain amongst others the invisible decay of the Higgs boson into a pair of neutralinos, are also implemented in the analysis. We show that viable neutralino dark matter can be achieved for masses as low as 15 GeV. In this case, light charginos close to the LEP bound are required in addition to light right-chiral staus. Significant deviations are observed in the couplings of the 125 GeV Higgs boson. These constitute a promising way to probe the light neutralino dark matter scenario in the next run of the LHC.

Top Polarization in Sbottom Decays at the LHC

We perform a comprehensive analysis of the polarization of the top quarks originating from sbottom-pair production at the LHC, followed by sbottom decays to top+chargino. We study moreover the expected net polarization of top quarks produced in sbottom-to-chargino and stop-to-neutralino decays in scenarios with small chargino - neutralino mass difference, where these decays may be hard to distinguish. We show that, in contrast to top quarks produced via the Standard Model processes, the average polarization of top quarks originating from these SUSY decays can obtain any value between +1 and -1. We further study the effect of this polarization on the top quark decay kinematics. On the one hand this may be used to construct measures of this polarization, on the other hand it may be used to enhance the search reach in certain scenarios. Exploiting top polarization may also prove useful for searches for "natural" SUSY with light higgsinos, which is typically very difficult to detect at the LHC.

Higgs Bosons at 98 and 125 GeV at LEP and the LHC

We discuss NMSSM scenarios in which the lightest Higgs boson $h_1$ is consistent with the small LEP excess at about 98 GeV in $e^+e^- \to Zh$ with $h\to b\anti b$ and the heavier Higgs boson $h_2$ has the primary features of the LHC Higgs-like signals at 125 GeV, including an enhanced $γγ$ rate. Verification or falsification of the 98 GeV $h_1$ may be possible at the LHC during the 14 TeV run. The detection of the other NMSSM Higgs bosons at the LHC and future colliders is also discussed, as well as dark matter properties of the scenario under consideration.

Mixed sneutrino dark matter in light of the 2011 XENON and LHC results

In the context of supersymmetric models in which small Dirac neutrino masses are generated by supersymmetry breaking, a mainly right-handed (RH) mixed sneutrino can be an excellent cold dark matter (DM) candidate. We perform a global analysis of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM)+RH neutrino parameter space by means of Markov Chain Monte Carlo scans. We include all relevant constraints from collider and dark matter searches, paying particular attention to nuclear and astrophysical uncertainties. Two distinct cases can satisfy all constraints: heavy sneutrino DM with mass of order 100 GeV, as well as light sneutrino DM with mass of about 3-6 GeV. We discuss the implications for direct and indirect dark matter searches, as well as for SUSY and Higgs searches at the LHC for both, the light and the heavy sneutrino dark matter case. The light sneutrino case is excluded by the 125-126 GeV Higgs signal.

Yukawa-unified natural supersymmetry

Previous work on t-b-τYukawa-unified supersymmetry, as expected from SUSY GUT theories based on the gauge group SO(10), tended to have exceedingly large electroweak fine-tuning (EWFT). Here, we examine supersymmetric models where we simultaneously require low EWFT ("natural SUSY") and a high degree of Yukawa coupling unification, along with a light Higgs scalar with m_h\sim125 GeV. As Yukawa unification requires large tanβ\sim50, while EWFT requires rather light third generation squarks and low μ\sim100-250 GeV, B-physics constraints from BR(B\to X_sγ) and BR(B_s\to μ+μ-) can be severe. We are able to find models with EWFT Δ\lesssim 50-100 (better than 1-2% EWFT) and with Yukawa unification as low as R_yuk\sim1.3 (30% unification) if B-physics constraints are imposed. This may be improved to R_yuk\sim1.2 if additional small flavor violating terms conspire to improve accord with B-constraints. We present several Yukawa-unified natural SUSY (YUNS) benchmark points. LHC searches will be able to access gluinos in the lower 1-2 TeV portion of their predicted mass range although much of YUNS parameter space may lie beyond LHC14 reach. If heavy Higgs bosons can be accessed at a high rate, then the rare H, A\to μ+μ- decay might allow a determination of tanβ\sim50 as predicted by YUNS models. Finally, the predicted light higgsinos should be accessible to a linear e+e- collider with \sqrt{s}\sim0.5 TeV.

Could two NMSSM Higgs bosons be present near 125 GeV?

We examine GUT-scale NMSSM scenarios in which {\it both} $h_1$ and $h_2$ lie in the 123 -- 128 GeV mass range. Very substantially enhanced $γγ$ and other rates are possible. Broadened mass peaks are natural.

Anatomy of maximal stop mixing in the MSSM

A Standard Model-like Higgs near 125 GeV in the MSSM requires multi-TeV stop masses, or a near-maximal contribution to its mass from stop mixing. We investigate the maximal mixing scenario, and in particular its prospects for being realized it in potentially realistic GUT models. We work out constraints on the possible GUT-scale soft terms, which we compare with what can be obtained from some well-known mechanisms of SUSY breaking mediation. Finally, we analyze two promising scenarios in detail, namely gaugino mediation and gravity mediation with non-universal Higgs masses.

The constrained NMSSM and Higgs near 125 GeV

We assess the extent to which various constrained versions of the NMSSM are able to describe the recent hints of a Higgs signal at the LHC corresponding to a Higgs mass in the range 123-128 GeV.

WZ plus missing-E_T signal from gaugino pair production at LHC7

LHC searches for supersymmetry currently focus on strongly produced sparticles, which are copiously produced if gluinos and squarks have masses of a few hundred GeV. However, in supersymmetric models with heavy scalars, as favored by the decoupling solution to the SUSY flavor and CP problems, and m_{\tg}> 500 GeV as indicated by recent LHC results, chargino--neutralino (\tw_1^\pm\tz_2) production is the dominant cross section for m_{\tw_1} \sim m_{\tz_2} < m_{\tg}/3 at LHC with \sqrt{s}=7 TeV (LHC7). Furthermore, if m_{\tz_1}+m_Z \lesssim m_{\tz_2}\lesssim m_{\tz_1}+m_h, then \tz_2 dominantly decays via \tz_2\to\tz_1 Z, while \tw_1 decays via \tw_1\to \tz_1 W. We investigate the LHC7 reach in the WZ + MET channel (for both leptonic and hadronic decays of the W boson) in models with and without the assumption of gaugino mass universality. In the case of the mSUGRA/CMSSM model with heavy squark masses, the LHC7 discovery reach in the WZ+MET channel becomes competetive with the reach in the canonical MET + jets channel for integrated luminosities \sim 30 fb^-1. We also present the LHC7 reach for a simplified model with arbitrary m_{\tz_1} and m_{\tw_1} \sim m_{\tz_2}. Here, we find a reach of up to m_{\tw_1}\sim 200 (250) GeV for 10 (30) fb^-1.

The supersymmetric flavour problem in 5D GUTs and its consequences for LHC phenomenology

We study supersymmetric models with a GUT-sized extra dimension, where both the Higgs fields and the SUSY breaking hidden sector are localized on a 4D brane. Exponential wave function profiles of the matter fields give rise to hierarchical structures in the Yukawa couplings and soft terms. Such structures can naturally explain hierarchical fermion masses and mixings, while at the same time alleviating the supersymmetric flavour problem. We discuss two sources of supersymmetry breaking, radion mediation and brane fields, and perform a detailed numerical analysis, thoroughly taking into account the proliferation of unknown O(1) coefficients that occurs in this class of models. It turns out that additional assumptions on supersymmetry breaking are necessary to evade the stringent experimental bounds on lepton flavour violation. The favourable regions of parameter space are then examined with regards to their LHC phenomenology. They generically feature heavy gluinos and squarks beyond current bounds. Lepton flavour violation in SUSY cascade decays can give interesting signatures.

Light Sneutrino Dark Matter at the LHC

In supersymmetric (SUSY) models with Dirac neutrino masses, a weak-scale trilinear A-term that is not proportional to the small neutrino Yukawa couplings can induce a sizable mixing between left and right-handed sneutrinos. The lighter sneutrino mass eigenstate can hence become the lightest SUSY particle (LSP) and a viable dark matter candidate. In particular, it can be an excellent candidate for light dark matter with mass below ~10 GeV. Such a light mixed sneutrino LSP has a dramatic effect on SUSY signatures at the LHC, as charginos decay dominantly into the light sneutrino plus a charged lepton, and neutralinos decay invisibly to a neutrino plus a sneutrino. We perform a detailed study of the LHC potential to resolve the light sneutrino dark matter scenario by means of three representative benchmark points with different gluino and squark mass hierarchies. We study in particular the determination of the LSP (sneutrino) mass from cascade decays involving charginos, using the mT2 variable. Moreover, we address measurements of additional invisible sparticles, in our case the lightest neutralino, and the question of discrimination against the MSSM.

Thermal leptogenesis and the gravitino problem in the Asaka-Yanagida axion/axino dark matter scenario

A successful implementation of thermal leptogenesis requires the re-heat temperature after inflation T_R to exceed ~2\times 10^9 GeV. Such a high T_R value typically leads to an overproduction of gravitinos in the early universe, which will cause conflicts, mainly with BBN constraints. Asaka and Yanagida (AY) have proposed that these two issues can be reconciled in the context of the Peccei-Quinn augmented MSSM (PQMSSM) if one adopts a mass hierarchy m(sparticle)>m(gravitino)>m(axino), with m(axino) keV. We calculate the relic abundance of mixed axion/axino dark matter in the AY scenario, and investigate under what conditions a value of T_R sufficient for thermal leptogenesis can be generated. A high value of PQ breaking scale f_a is needed to suppress overproduction of axinos, while a small vacuum misalignment angle θ_i is needed to suppress overproduction of axions. The large value of f_a results in late decaying neutralinos. To avoid BBN constraints, the AY scenario requires a low thermal abundance of neutralinos and high values of neutralino mass. We include entropy production from late decaying saxions, and find the saxion needs to be typically at least several times heavier than the gravitino. A viable AY scenario suggests that LHC should discover a spectrum of SUSY particles consistent with weak scale supergravity; that the apparent neutralino abundance is low; that a possible axion detection signal (probably with m_axion in the sub-micro-eV range) should occur, but no direct or indirect signals for WIMP dark matter should be observed.

Reconciling thermal leptogenesis with the gravitino problem in SUSY models with mixed axion/axino dark matter

Successful implementation of thermal leptogenesis requires re-heat temperatures T_R\agt 2\times 10^9 GeV, in apparent conflict with SUSY models with TeV-scale gravitinos, which require much lower T_R in order to avoid Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) constraints. We show that mixed axion/axino dark matter can reconcile thermal leptogenesis with the gravitino problem in models with m_{\tG}\agt 30 TeV, a rather high Peccei-Quinn breaking scale and an initial mis-alignment angle θ_i < 1. We calculate axion and axino dark matter production from four sources, and impose BBN constraints on long-lived gravitinos and neutralinos. Moreover, we discuss several SUSY models which naturally have gravitino masses of the order of tens of TeV. We find a reconciliation difficult in Yukawa-unified SUSY and in AMSB with a wino-like lightest neutralino. However, T_R\sim 10^{10}-10^{12} GeV can easily be achieved in effective SUSY and in models based on mixed moduli-anomaly mediation. Consequences of this scenario include: 1. an LHC SUSY discovery should be consistent with SUSY models with a large gravitino mass, 2. an apparent neutralino relic abundance Ω_{\tz_1}h^2\alt 1, 3. no WIMP direct or indirect detection signals should be found, and 4. the axion mass should be less than \sim 10^{-6} eV, somewhat below the conventional range which is explored by microwave cavity axion detection experiments.

Effective Supersymmetry at the LHC

We investigate the phenomenology of Effective Supersymmetry (ESUSY) models wherein electroweak gauginos and third generation scalars have masses up to about 1~TeV while first and second generation scalars lie in the multi-TeV range. Such models ameliorate the SUSY flavor and CP problems via a decoupling solution, while at the same time maintaining naturalness. In our analysis, we assume independent GUT scale mass parameters for third and first/second generation scalars and for the Higgs scalars, in addition to m_{1/2}, \tanβand A_0, and require radiative electroweak symmetry breaking as usual. We analyse the parameter space which is consistent with current constraints, by means of a Markov Chain Monte Carlo scan. The lightest MSSM particle (LMP) is mostly, but not always the lightest neutralino, and moreover, the thermal relic density of the neutralino LMP is frequently very large. These models may phenomenologically be perfectly viable if the LMP before nucleosynthesis decays into the axino plus SM particles. Dark matter is then an axion/axino mixture. At the LHC, the most important production mechanisms are gluino production (for m_{1/2} ~<700~GeV) and third generation squark production, while SUSY events rich in b-jets are the hallmark of the ESUSY scenario. We present a set of ESUSY benchmark points with characteristic features and discuss their LHC phenomenology.

On SUSY GUTs with a degenerate Higgs mass matrix

Certain supersymmetric grand unified models predict that the coefficients of the quadratic terms in the MSSM Higgs potential should be degenerate at the GUT scale. We discuss some examples for such models, and we analyse the implications of this peculiar condition of a GUT-scale degenerate Higgs mass matrix for low-scale MSSM phenomenology. To this end we explore the parameter space which is consistent with existing experimental constraints by means of a Markov Chain Monte Carlo analysis.
